The Red Death is the overarching antagonist of the DreamWorks animated How to Train Your Dragon franchise, serving as the main antagonist of the 2010 animated feature film How to Train Your Dragon, a mentioned character in the video game Dragons: Rise of Berk and a posthumous antagonist in the rest of the franchise. It is a Stoker Class dragon and second only in size to the Bewilderbeast, which is the largest of all dragons.

Role in How to Train Your Dragon

The Red Death was a vicious dragon that enslaved hundreds if not thousands of dragons, acting as both their queen and a brood parasite. Gronckles, Hideous Zipplebacks, Monstrous Nightmares, Terrible Terrors, and even Toothless, one of the few remaining Night Furies, fell under its spell. This dragon was responsible for the many attacks on Berk, commanding its underlings to raid the area to procure their overlord food. Any dragons who failed to offer enough meals were themselves eaten as punishment. Its presence was unknown to Berk’s Vikings until it and its nest were discovered by Hiccup, Astrid and Toothless, whereupon they saw its brutality and it attempted to eat them.

Toothless, later captured by Hiccup’s father, Stoick the Vast, was later forced to lead the Viking armada to the nest, where it emerged to attack the Vikings. Though Stoick’s forces attempted to stop it, the dragon queen easily routed the Vikings, and was intercepted by Hiccup, Astrid, Snotlout, Fishlegs, and the twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut, all astride dragons. Though the twins, Astrid, Fishlegs and Snoutlout all were able to keep it at bay for a time, it was only the combined efforts of Hiccup and Toothless that turned the tide of the attack. Engaging the dragon head on, they lured the great beast into the air, where they tricked it into chasing them into the clouds. There, Toothless began peppering the Red Death’s wings with fire until it retaliated, searing the entire area with flame. Toothless and Hiccup, now out of time due to Toothless’ prosthetic tail fin being burned, tricked the dragon into diving after them. As they raced toward the ground, Hiccup had Toothless fire a shot down the Red Death’s throat, causing the fuel for its flame to ignite in its throat. When the Red Death realized the ground was approaching and tried to pull up, it could not; Toothless’ fire had burned holes in its wings. Thus, the Red Death crashed and exploded, catching Toothless and Hiccup in the blast.

Though Hiccup and Toothless survived the fight, Hiccup lost his left foot to the dragon’s flame. However, the Red Death’s demise had a positive side effect: the Vikings of Berk and the dragons it had previously enslaved became united forever, beginning a new age of peace.

The Red Death is later mentioned in DreamWorks Dragons: The Series by the Berserker Clan chief Dagur the Deranged, when he hears that Hiccup killed the creature.

Personality

The Red Death was a cruel and bad-tempered dragon, with no mercy to its subjects, or rather, its slaves. Though it likely controls its minions using fear, it may, like the Bewilderbeast, have some form of mind control. According to Berkian legend, the Red Death lives 2,000 years and, before it dies, lays 3,000 eggs. The hatchlings then fight each other to the death, a process that can take up to 100 years, until only one survives.

Talk: Red Death

how could one blast of fire overheat a huge dragon thats about 10 times bigger than the bonenapper

Toothless’s blast ignitied the gasses in the Red Death’s mouth and blasted them back into the dragon’s throat with tremendous force. Keep in mind that Toothless’s blast knock over buildings and even the Red Death. Once the gasses are ignited the Red Death collides with the ground. This crushes his head on cantact, and all the gasses stored inside his head and throat are ignited by the already burning flames of his mouth. That instant release of all the Red Death’s flamable gasses caused his body to litterally explode. Toothless’s fire just started the problem, the Red Death crashing was the real reason for the massive explosion! You have Toothless’s fire as the spark and the Red Death’s own gasses were the fuel. That is why one single fire blast killed the largest and most deadly dragon in the HTTYD world. Toothless the Nightfury (talk) 15:09, May 28, 2013 (UTC)

Um. we say on the page that this thing is probably female, but I can offer just a good of an argument that it is male. Hiccup actually refers to the animal as a he. Astrid is just using a metaphor when she calls it a queen. It is like a giant bee hive, they’re the workers and that’s their queen. She is talking about the dragon’s relationship with its servants, not necessarily its gender. Hiccup flat out calls him a he, and then Ruff and Tuff call it female as an insult (bride of Grendle!), so I would say that we don’t know the gender for sure, but male seems more likely imo. Any thoughts? Toothless the Nightfury (talk) 15:53, August 29, 2013 (UTC)

8A9C43BE9 (talk) 19:28, August 29, 2013 (UTC)

No. FISHLEGS could not identify the genders. Hiccup seems to have been spot on everytime (He calls Toothless a him, he identifies Torch’s mother as female even when Tuffnut starts calling it male), so I would say the Vikings can tell. How? No clue. Still, I wouldn’t go so far as to take Fishleg’s ignorance as being universal. Fishleg’s is a good example of knowledge without much application. He blurts out facts and stuff, but when it comes time to actually APPLY them (aka figuring out his own dragon’s gender), he isn’t all that impressive. I would say that Hiccup can tell what gender dragons are by simply looking at them, and I see no evidence against that whatsoever. Hiccup has been correct everytime. It just depends on the person I guess because the Outcast could not tell whether the Nadder in Heather Report part 2 was male or female. Obviously, it isn’t easy to tell, but again, I think Hiccup can. Toothless the Nightfury (talk) 19:41, August 29, 2013 (UTC)

If Hiccup were able to identify the gender of dragons, he probably would have told Fishlegs. Old Norse has a reasonably complex gendered word form system, so it is unlikely that Fishlegs would have never raised the topic by incorectly using the male form of a word somewhere. Perhaps the Hooligan dialect of norse uses the neuter form of dragon by default. 8A9C43BE9 (talk) 00:16, August 30, 2013 (UTC)

Look the dialect of the norse doesn’t play into this at all, of that we can be sure! I mean, nothing in HTTYD is spoken in a way that would even hint at the fact that they are speaking norse. Its a film, that is just how it is.

Interesting that you think Hiccup would have told him. Guess that is a point, but when Hiccup goes and actually calls something a HIM or HER, I take it that he is correct. Hiccup could have easily just not paid attention to Meatlug and left Fishlegs to figure things out on his own. However, Hiccup does do his own discovering, and he often identifies or even corrects others when talking about dragon gender. Toothless the Nightfury (talk) 00:19, August 30, 2013 (UTC)

Is this a species?

The new book, Guide to the dragons, talks about the Red death as a species, not an individual. Does anybody have any evidence that the red death is a seadragonus giganticus maximus? Because if there is no evidence, then we should proceed to treat the red death as a species.Neilandio (talk) 13:40, May 4, 2014 (UTC)

Yes, it is a species. It was formerly called a Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus. But now that changed it to Red Death. User:Alexander.lee.90813

That’s what the new book says, but it wouldn’t be the first time there is contradictory information in two different httyd media. This is why I want to see if there is any evidence to support the idea the Red Death is a seadragonus giganticus maximus or if all this time we were just speculating the red death to be a seadragonus giganticus maximus.Neilandio (talk) 13:52, May 4, 2014 (UTC)

Dragon commanding

According to the dragonpedia, the Red Death is able to command and control dragons, by giving a roar or even starring with its six eyes. Does that mean that all dragons could be controlled by the Red Death too? Here’s a theory, the Red Death’s ability just to roar to call dragons in only works for weaker dragons status such as Deadly Nadder, Monstrous Nightmare, Gronckle etc. Similar to the Bewilderbeast, controlling dragons is easy, even when some dragons species are asleep, just like Gothi’s Terrible Terrors, and a Gronckle. But for Drago’s Bewilderbeast to control Toothless, a Night Fury, with a higher dragon status, it was pretty difficult, even though it succeeded. So the ability to stare directly with its eyes are for a higher dragon status right? Lightning the Skrill (talk) 6:29, July 9, 2014 (UTC)

That Gronkle was not asleep.-NighttheNightfury,11.08.2014.

Blind Spot

According to all the information, the Red Death has no blind spot. Which means it is able to look above, under etc. with its 6 eyes. That’s why dreamworks made this dragon with many eyes, to not have a blind spot. Lightning the Skrill (talk) 19:41, August 11, 2014 (UTC)

Red Deaths in HTTYD 2?

I was watching HTTYD 2 and for a while I noticed in the corwds of Valks’a dragons there are many Red Deaths, but they are just smaller in size. Look very closely in the battle scenes and you’ll see what I am pointing out.

Hope, you’ve relized earlier, those arn’t Red Deaths. Lightning the Skrill (talk) 01:15, July 27, 2015 (UTC)

What are they? They look EXACTLY like miniature versions of them.

Unknown species of a sort. Go check out the unknown dragons page, then you’ll find that one. Lightning the Skrill (talk) 01:09, July 30, 2015 (UTC)

What’s the work?

Loosely based on the children’s book series of the same name, How To Train Your Dragon is an animated fantasy film franchise by DreamWorks Animation, with television and other media spinoffs. It begins with the 2010 first film instalment.

It is set in Viking times and pits Vikings at war with dragons. The Viking island of Berk, led by chief Stoick the Vast, has been fending them off for centuries. The film follows Hiccup, the son of Stoick, as he shoots down a Night Fury (the rarest and most feared dragon species) named Toothless. After sparing the dragons life, Hiccup comes to befriend him and realises that people and dragons can live in peace.

Who is she?

The Red Death is the «Hive Queen» of the Dragons around Berk, who lives in her nest on Dragon Island. She enslaves the dragons in her hive and has them attack Berk and bring her back food, or she kills them herself. This cycle has gone on for centuries and has resulted in a great war between humans and dragons. However, her reign would finally end when Toothless led the Vikings of Berk to her Island. In the ensuing battle, Hiccup and Toothless would do battle with her and finally destroy her, ending her terror once and for all.

What has she done?

Many centuries ago, the Red Death enslaved a vast amount of dragons in the Archipelago and she had them attack the Island of Berk to steal their food for her, cause countless examples of vast destruction to the Island and resulting in war between humans and Vikings and the deaths of both hundreds of Berkians and the sacrifice and deaths of thousands of her dragon slaves all for her own desires. She would continue this for centuries, resulting in mass death and destruction and a strong hatred of dragons.

The dragons would then provide her with all the food they had stolen for her, and if they refused or even just failed to being any back or even enough back she would kill and devour them. This is shown as when a Gronckle slave came back with not enough food, she devoured him whole as well as another Zippleback slave.

In the final battle, the Red Death battled the Berkian fleet. While she could have just forced them to retreat, she instead tried to kill them all, burning their ships so they couldn’t escape and retreat, and allowing her to kill every last one of them (though she would be stopped). She would also try to devour Astrid and Stormfly, kill the Dragon Trainers and try to kill Hiccup and Toothless in the final battle. She was also responsible for Hiccup losing his leg in the battle, as it was the result from the battle with her. She is shown and described as so evil, that she has to die for peace to be brought.

Moral Event Horizon

She breaks the Moral Event Horizon many times:

Moral Agency?

In the world of the franchise, Dragons have been confirmed to have moral agency. They are shown to be intelligent, kind and are their own individuals.

To hammer this home, and to prove that the Red Death is particularly evil and not just being a creature trying to survive, Valka’s Bewilderbeast in the sequel has the same role as her, being a ruler of a Dragon nest. However, unlike the Red Death who oppresses her slaves and doesn’t care one bit about them to the point of killing them without remorse, the Bewilderbeast is kind and benevolent, feeding his dragons and protecting them from other threats, even rescuing them from hunters. This proves the Red Death chooses to be evil and is not just enacting her natural role. She is being truly evil.

On top of that, in the final battle, the Red Death could’ve just scared off the Berkians and forced them to retreat, but instead she burned the boats making it impossible for them to retreat as what she really wanted was to slaughter all of them.

Heinous standard

For an animated «kids» series, the How To Train Your Dragon series has a surprisingly high heinous standard.

Despite the vile actions of these two, the Red Death’s actions are very comparable. She is responsible for entire centuries of war between humans and dragons. She is therefore responsible for mass destruction to Berk and the deaths of hundreds of Vikings and thousands of her own dragon slaves. She also enslaved her own kind to do her bidding and kills them if they don’t get her enough food and tried to wipe out the entire population of Berk, not letting them retreat and leaving them stranded on Dragon Island so she could kill them all.

Her actions are also not offscreen villainy, as we see several examples of dragon attacks and the destruction they cause because of her as well as showing her personally killing her slaves. Therefore, even though she doesn’t have a huge amount of screentime, her most heinous actions both directly and indirectly are shown quite a bit.

Generic Doomsday Villain?

She is shown to be greedy and ungrateful due to how much she food she gets during her first scene and yet she still kills and roars at her servants, even killing another for the sake of it.

She is also shown to be extremely lazy as she just stays where she is and angrily orders and at the rest to do all her dirty work for her.

Finally, she is shown to be a cruelly intelligent creature as shown by the strategies she pulls from forcing dragons to serve her under threat of death, to stranding the Vikings on her island to prevent them from escaping.

Also, during the fight, she shows facial expressions and emotions of anger and rage towards Hiccup and Toothless, and even an evil stare of pleasure as she thinks she is about to kill them. Similar to a certain other evil dragon.

Mitigating factors

Absolutely none. She couldn’t care less about her slaves and shows no remorse for her actions, happy to commit it for centuries as long as she gets what she wants. Also, unlike other evil dragons in the franchise who were abused into doing such things, the Red Death has no tragic backstory.

Biography

Books

In the first book, the Green Death arrives on Long Beach with a smaller Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus (which she eats later on). Hiccup is sent to meet with her and asks if she comes in peace or war as she is the only one who can speak Dragonese.

When Hiccup says his name the dragon shivers subconsciously she seems however that Hiccup did not notice it nor did the Green Death itself. The dragon says he comes in peace but that he’s still going to eat them all regardless. The Green Death and Hiccup discuss Singing Suppers, but during the conversation, the Green Death moves in to eat Hiccup.

Just as this happens the Green Death yawns, and decides he is too tired to eat Hiccup right now, stating that he should come back in a few hours to be eaten. Hiccup then leaves and tells the tribe that the Green Death, while coming in peace, will still eat them. With the help of the other Hooligan and Meathead boys and their dragons, Hiccup creates a plan to kill the Green Death with the help of a second Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus, the Purple Death, which they trick into helping them.

In the following battle, the Purple Death is killed. However, the Green Death is fatally wounded. In anger, the Green Death swallows Hiccup whole. Fortunately, Hiccup avoids being digested by grabbing and holding on to a Roman spear stuck in the dragon’s throat. While inside the Green Death, Hiccup discovers the fire holes (a dragon’s source of fire) and blocks them with his helmet. Due to this, the Green Death blows up when she tries to burn Stoick, Hiccup, and Toothless. Her death makes Hiccup a hero in the eyes of his tribe.

In «How to Steal a Dragon’s Sword», the Green Death was known as Merciless, the leader of the Dragon Rebellion in Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the First’s time. Merciless saw in the future that he was to be killed by a human named Hiccup. He sent Wodensfang to kill Hiccup but was instead betrayed by Wodensfang when Wodensfang discovers the good in Hiccup’s heart. With the Dragon Jewel, Hiccup ordered Merciless to disband the Rebellion and become a loner.

The Red Death first appears when Hiccup, Toothless, and Astrid discover the Dragon’s nest, feasting off what her servants feed her. After a Gronckle drops a tiny piece of fish to the Red Death, she emerges and devours the dragon. However, the Red Death spots Hiccup and his friends when she sees that Toothless has contributed nothing and has humans on his back, but they manage to escape.

The Red Death appears again when Stoick and his Vikings attack the Dragon’s nest. She attacks the Vikings and destroys their ships in the process. Fortunately, Hiccup and his friends arrive and while Hiccup’s friends distract the Red Death, he and Stoick save Toothless from drowning as he was caged on one of the sinking ships. Hiccup and Toothless then drive the Red Death into the clouds and conceals Toothless’ form. Toothless fires several plasma blasts at the Red Death’s wings but they don’t have an effect on the monster dragon. Enraged, the Red Death shoots fire in all directions around herself and manages to inflame Toothless’s tail. Using as much time as they had left, Hiccup and Toothless lead the Red Death out of the clouds and allowed her to chase them until she attempted to deliver a fatal blow at them. However, Toothless fired a plasma blast down her throat, lighting her insides ablaze. The dragon’s wings are ripped apart, causing her to fall to the ground and resulting in an explosion, killing the Red Death for good.

Abilities

The Red Death primarily uses her enlarged nostrils and hearing in order to hunt down her prey. Her skull is heavily armored and she has a tail specifically designed to smash into objects. She has been shown to have incredible speed in flight despite her size, being able to keep up with Toothless for long amounts of time. The dragon also does not have a blind spot, due to her having six eyes instead of two. The Red Death’s flame jets are enormous and are powerful enough to take down an entire Viking fleet of ships in just one breath. Like other dragons, however, the Red Death cannot hunt efficiently if her wings are damaged and she is just as susceptible to fire on her insides.

Film Developer Description

«This ultimate monster, seen pursuing Toothless and Hiccup, is the most vicious. According to legend, she lives 2,000 years and, before she dies, lays 3,000 eggs. The hatchlings fight each other to the death, a process that can take up to 100 years, until only one survives. «All dragons have a blind spot,» Sanders says. «Except this one. That is one reason we gave him six eyes instead of two. The other reason is that we wanted him to be just generally upsetting. This one is our Godzilla.»

The Red Death in the Arena Show

It is immensly strong, has a shot limit of 6 and has a petrifying fear factor. It’s vast size gives it thick armour and a massive strength. Unfortunately, it is this very size that is the Red Death’s Achilles Heel. The mass of the Red Death means that it is an extremely slow creature. The size also makes it difficult for it to hide. The Red Death is forced to hide within mountains. until it gets too big for them!

Personality

Being a non-sapient creature, the Red Death has little more to it’s personality then an innate desire for destruction and revenge. It appears to be an unintelligent lifeform, but it does seem to have a small amount of awareness. When chasing Toothless and Hiccup through the clouds, the Red Death narrowed it’s eyes, suggesting that it knew who it was chasing and had a desire to finish them off instead of just killing them.

Powers and Abilities

While the Red Death does not possess any magical powers, it is still a dragon and like all dragons it has the ability to breath fire. The firejets the Red Death conjures are so hot, they start of as blue. Not only that but they are also wide enough to take out an entire armada of viking ships.

The Red Death emerges

Though it is very large and the wings it possesses are tiny in comparison to it’s body, the Red Death is capable of flight.

As an Alpha-Dragon, the Red Death has the ability to control other dragons through sight and sound. This ability does not seem to be as powerful as a Bewilderbeast’s, as when the Hooligans stormed Helheim’s Gate, all of the other dragons fled and the Red Death came to destroy them himself. He also did not seem to be able to control Toothless and the other rider’s dragons as they were fighting, hinting that this requires heavy concentration.

The Red Death is massive and as such is equipped with a massive strength, giving it the power to bust through solid rock walls. The size of the Red Death also gives it an extremely thick hide which acts as a massive shield against attacks of any kind from physical to magical. However, like all dragons, the Red Death is not so fireproof on the inside and a well-timed fire blast can finish it off. Because Berk has been at war with dragons for generations, it is possible that the Red Death’s natural lifespan could be considerably greater than any human, though this was never confirmed.

Role in the Crossover

As the antagonist to one of the Big Four’s original films, the Red Death is considered to be one of the four primary antagonists of the fandom, his sheer size and raw power more than enough to challenge the forces of good.

Since the release of How to Train Your Dragon 2, the Red Death is considered interchangable with Drago Bludvist and his Bewilderbeast.
