How to Install Risk of Rain 2 Mods?

We assume that you have a little knowledge about Window’s OS users such as file and folder systems and with the file system of your computer, and we assume that you have some knowledge about downloading, installing, and unzipping archive files.

There are two methods for installing Risk of Rain 2 mods

1. Manual Installation

While this method is not recommended for an average user as it is more technical than using the Mod Manager method.

Installation of Dependencies

Most mods in Risk of Rain 2 require BepinEx (The Modloader) and R2API, both can be downloaded from Thunderstore.

Some mods might require other libraries or mods to work which can be seen in a table given below and on the Thunderstore mod’s page.

Updating is very simple, repeat the installation process and overwrite the existing files to update the mod.

Disabling Mods

If you like to disable all mods, then rename winhttp.dll in your Risk of Rain 2 folder to winhttp.dis.

To get those modes back, just change winhttp.dis to winhttp.dll

Mod Configuration

Configuration can be done in the “\BepInEx\config” folder, you can alter the settings in these files by using a text editor.

1) Click to mods what you want and then «Download»

If new game version is released
If a new Risk of rain 2 version is released then go to thunderstore.io/package/bbepis/BepInExPack and download new archive.Then you need to delite game floder (Not in steam, full floder called «Risk of Rain 2» in «\steamapps\common\».After that download game again and open archive that you downloaded and open floder called «BepInExPack» then unpack all files from that floder to game floder.
To install R2 API go to thunderstore.io/package/tristanmcpherson/R2API and download archive and then unpack to «\steamapps\common\Risk of Rain 2\BepInEx» now you can install mods that requests R2 API.

If mod needs one more API

If you can see something like this on Thunderstore click to that API name and download it.It can be installed as normal modification «\steamapps\common\Risk of Rain 2\BepInEx\plugins».Mod that requests this APi you need to drop to the same place.

I just wanted to make it easy for beginners who wants to try mods, because even for someone who can do a little bit of research (like me), it took me a while to figure it out.

That’s all what you need to be able to use MODS.

MODS can be found here https://thunderstore.io/ (I’m not sure if there are other similare website but this is the most known)

Each mod comes with instructions, but basically you just create a folder representing each pluging (unless it’s sais otherwise on the plugin instructions) and copy all the files in that folder. The folder must be created in \steamapps\common\Risk of Rain 2\BepInEx\plugins

When you start Risk of Rain 2, a console/command prompt should appear. If there is a red wall of text, then something is wrong.

Also make sure you installed every requirement (all mods require R2API and BepInEx).
Below an example of a mod that requires an other MOD called HJUpdater API. For more info about HJ Updater check the Updates section.

Note that only R2AP is updated very often. You can check when was the last update on thunderstore.io

As I’m writing this, it was updated again after just 2 days. So whenever a MOD doesn’t work, check if you need to update something.

Some MODS require HJUpdater API. This API is installed like any other MOD and it takes care of updating. In this case you have to update HJUpdater API in the same way.

If you think you’ll have way too many mods, or just want to use a GUI to manage them, you should check ROR2 MOD Manager : https://thunderstore.io/package/scottbot95/RoR2ModManager/

This will allow you to use the Install with MOD Manager button directly from thunderstore.io

You can switch back whenever you want.

If you still want to delete all, just make sure you don’t delete something else beside the files that we put at the start.

The simple answer is here.
This means we will need to delete :

— BepInEx folder
— doorstop_config.ini
— winhttp.dll

If you delete any other file that is required to make the game work, you’ll have to check the files integrity so they can be downloaded again or you have to download the whole game.

To make it simple, in order to run MODS, a file is needed. If this file is deleted we can add arguments in the game shortcut to replace the instructions on the file.

If you have done everything correctly, you should now have two versions of Risk of Rain 2 in your library: the original one and the shortcut that enables BepInEx (and all the mods).

I didn’t try yet to play with friends but here is what is said on the FAQ :

If someone doesn’t want to install mods for some reason. For the best results everyone in your lobby should also have the same mods as you to remove some lag/desync issues that may occur.»

Please take the time to read through this guide as well as any sub-guides that are linked to. Most issues can simply be resolved by reading what is provided.

If you do not like to read then skip to downloading the mod manager, you can always refer back to this if you’re stuck

Reading mod descriptions and doing research on issues is recommended if you want a pleasant modding experience. If you think you can skip doing these to save time now, you may end up spending time troubleshooting all because you missed something simple like single player only, not compatible with X, etc.

This guide assumes that you are familiar with basic Windows OS use such as the file and folder systems and with the file system of your own computer. It also assumes you know how to download and install programs and unzip archive files. If you lack a program to extract archive files, I recommend 7zip [www.7-zip.org] for this task.

Note: You can still play Vanilla Risk of Rain 2 by launching via steam, riskofrain2.exe, a shortcut or clicking «Start Vanilla» inside a mod manager.

Now for the longer version.

First things first, you are going to have to go to Thunderstore.io. After arriving at the homepage, you are going to want to download the R2API and the BepinExPack.

Next, unzip the BepinExPack and put the folder called BepInEx in the Risk of Rain 2 folder that is inside your steamapps folder. Traditionally this will be C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Risk of Rain 2\ but it should be wherever you installed Risk of Rain 2 at.

Once you’ve done that, you need to unzip the R2API and put those files inside the BepinExPack plugins folder. So it will look like Risk of Rain 2\BepinsInEx\Plugins\

After you have all of that setup, you can finally download whatever mod you wish (continue reading for the best mods list). I personally chose ItemStats for this mod install guide, which shows you the stats of the items in-game rather than having to look them up or memorize them.

All you have to do to install the your favorite Risk of Rain 2 mod is to unzip the files, copy the dll file, and then paste it into the R2API folder.

And that’s it! Simply start Risk of Rain 2 normally and a terminal should appear if you did it all correctly.

Can I play with friends without mods?
Yes and no. There is a mod that allows you to host modded multiplayer games, but otherwise no. If this mod stops working or goes out of date then you are SOL.

Can I do quickplay or Prismatic Trials with mods?
Again, no. Obviously mods would change the game enough that you shouldn’t be matchmaking with other players who don’t have them.

Can you use mods on the PS4/Xbox/Etc?
No, you can’t use mods on console. This may change in the future, but currently you have no way of modding your console version of risk of rain 2.
