Post Jam Version!

Hello! The positive reception of the game jam version of Sacrifices Must Be Made inspired me to do a bit more work on it. I love playing card games so working on one is a delight.

The game hasn’t changed much in structure: it’s still a short, linear experience with the same ending as the game jam entry. It’s also much the same visually and I haven’t touched the audio. «So what is different in this updated version?» you might ask.

New Cards and Secret Interactions

I had a lot of fun adding some new playable cards to the game. These include cards like the Beehive, which adds a 1/1 flying Bee to your hand every time it’s attacked and the Grizzly Cub and Wolf Cub which, if they survive on the board for long enough, grow up into a Grizzly Bear and Wolf respectively. Along with the new cards there are some hidden interactions between them that can be discovered. An example is how the Grizzly Bear will move right beside the Beehive when played and change its portrait to a more docile honey-enamored one. There are a few of these. I’m not even sure if it’s possible right now, but something special happens if you are able to sacrifice the Cat 9 times.

More Strategic Gameplay

In the original version planning ahead was difficult. In Sacrifices Must Be Made creatures attack the turn they are played, so your opponent can surprise you by playing a Hunter and attacking with it in a single turn. To mitigate this surprise factor, and allow you to plan more effectively, you can now see what creature is going into which lane one turn in advance. This totally changes the experience and creates way more situations where serious thought is required.

Better Body Parts

Spoiler: Sacrifices Must Be Made allows you to dismember yourself in two different ways in a desperate attempt to tip the scales in your favor. I added that in the second half of the last day of the jam, so the eyeball was a white sphere and the hand was a flat sprite with a box collider on it. The eyeball and hand are now much more realistic and much creepier.

I heard there was a bug in the game jam version?

Luckily a few players let me know about a certain «Warren bug» in the game. This was a really simple one-line fix but I felt that it was against the spirit of the jam to fix it during the rating period. I also liked how it was a way to optionally cheat if the game’s wacky difficulty curve was giving the player trouble. In all seriousness: having bugs pointed out is extremely helpful! So thank you.

Its really impresive how much a game can do with just a few resources. The atmosphere is crazy and really creepy as intended. Thank you for this and for (of course) Inscryption.

I wish I could of got to the end! I felt extremely stuck so I gave up. One thing I’d like to mention about the game that could use improving. I felt as though there was a lack of audio in some areas and the areas that weren’t lacking might have been a little too loud. But that is just my opinion. Loved the concept of the game but could not get to the end.

I didn’t realize this game was cleaned up and released so I’m gonna try the full thing!

The trick on the last level is to cut off your hand when you’re in a position to deal some damage. Took me a couple tries to figure that out.

My antivirus quarantined the post-jam Windows version. Is it just me?

It was just me. My antivirus hadn’t been updated.

Just to be clear, this has a different story from Inscryption. It is not a smaller version of it. It is a small game made for an indie jam using the same base. It is not a replacement for Inscryption, nor is it a demake of it. Sacrifices Must Be Made just is.

A similar problem that I had with another card game on itch.io, is that once you have the mechanics down, and know how to read the board state, you realize that you are smashing your face into a brick wall until the random number generator relents. And of course, seeing a path to victory in more difficult circumstances requires being okay to decent at card games. Fortunately for me, as a child, I played Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!!, and Duel Masters, and read strategy articles and forum posts.

Other players would not be so fortunate, and the game seems to acquiesce to that frustration in order to get the player to finish the story. Waiting for R.N.G. to be good is a weakness of most card games, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be mentioned here, and ignores that other card games alleviate it.

The knife isn’t really effective at helping the player unless he can read the board state accurately, which can be difficult to do, it seems, even in the fully-developed Inscryption. This is because although the weight scale gives off a creepy vibe, which is good for a horror game, it is difficult to tell how much progress a player would have based on weight, or how the game calculates progress. How do you know how much is needed to win? The assumption is that you simply need a certain amount ahead in sum. This of course goes back to most people not being good at card games and the need for the game to let them keep going at the story.

I had few issues on my first run, and quite a few issues on my second run, and I think that comes down to which cards I chose. I don’t know what the designer’s intentions were, if there was supposed to be a right and wrong choice, but it was noticeably easier to beat fight the dude across the table with certain card picks. Because of these card picks, the game was harder, and thus easier to get into a bad position, after which the dude across the table offers the player the knife, which is difficult to figure out when the best time to use it will be, because the player can’t figure out the board state, because the scale is obfuscates the progress towards victory, and the computer player can make any card they want, and it is hard to believe you can win, and I think wanting to give up is a powerful feeling that the game COULD have taken advantage of, but chose not to in order to get players across the finish line, which ultimately leads to a feeling of being stuck, which is a feeling itself could have been used to help the game. Even if you were good at card games, it can be a frustrating position to be in. You can see why the developer added the stalemate check to Inscryption.

Of course, Inscryption also suffers less from some of these weaknesses, because Inscryption has a deeper card pool, alleviating the pressure off of the constrained beast supply in being able to handle any threat the opponent sends you.

I’m choosing to view the abruptness of the ending as an artistic and poetic constraint as opposed to a result of a time restriction or a developer’s shrug. I do this because I believe the game is a little stronger by not telling you “either” “ending” is the “good” one or the “bad” one – as if developers of those games will even tell you which is which, and sometimes will only tell you that a set of them are “bad.” Dwelling on the decision would have been a mistake, and I am glad the game relents.

Inscryption seems to have taken in some of these lessons, and provides a deeper game, so I’ll look into purchasing it when I get a stronger computer.

Рассказывать об играх Даниэля Маллинса, автора Pony Island и The Hex, — занятие довольно неблагодарное. Они строятся на попытках удивить игрока крайне нетривиальным способом, и любые спойлеры здесь попросту убьют желаемый эффект. При этом даже поверхностное описание механик может изрядно подпортить впечатления от игры, в которую лучше входить, не зная ничего сверх описания в Steam.

И все же об Inscryption интересно поговорить, пусть сделать это правильно не так уж просто. Cybersport.ru пробует обсудить феномен в обзоре ниже.

Придется чем-то жертвовать

Первое, что видит игрок, войдя в Inscryption, — главное меню, оформленное в пиксельной стилистике. «Новая игра» при этом заблокирована, и можно лишь продолжить предыдущее сохранение. Как говорится, это не баг, а фича, поэтому не стоит пугаться ошибок в коде.

Кликнув по иконке, пользователи обнаруживают себя в мрачной хижине за столом с неразличимой фигурой, глаза которой таинственно блестят в темноте. Глаза эти предлагают сыграть с ними в карты — эдакое подобие Hearthstone с уникальной механикой жертвоприношений.

Здесь хочется остановиться и рассказать о другой игре Маллинса — Sacrifices Must Be Made. Дело в том, что именно она, созданная для очередного конкурса инди-разработчиков, и стала прообразом Inscryption. Правда, в Sacrifices Must Be Made кроме карточной игры нет ничего, да и та заканчивается через считаные минуты. Но вернемся к сути.

Итак, у игрока есть две небольшие колоды: в одной находятся различные звери, в другой — исключительно белки. Белки бесплатны, но крайне слабы и не наносят никакого урона, а большинство зверей требуют жертвы для вывода на стол. Убиваем белку и выкладываем, например, горностая — он уже посильнее и может атаковать. Каждая нанесенная единица урона по противнику перевешивает чашу весов, и бой выигран, если перевес достигает пяти очков.

В отличие от той же Hearthstone, выложенные карты идут в одну из четырех линий и в большинстве случаев бьют прямо перед собой. Это дает дополнительную тактическую глубину: иногда есть смысл пожертвовать картой не для получения более сильной, а просто для того, чтобы заблокировать мощную атаку.

Свойства при этом нередко комбинируются между собой: при определенном везении можно встретить (или создать, но об этом чуть позже) карту, которая, например, может летать и нырять одновременно, что делает ее особо грозным противником. Такой карте крайне трудно что-либо противопоставить — кроме разве что колючего существа со свойством «прыжок», которое способно блокировать летающих существ. Собственно, на правильной сборке и пополнении колоды строится немалая часть игры.

Бои в игре не проходят один за одним, а обставлены в виде путешествия по карте. Ближайший аналог — Slay the Spire с ее ветвистым путем к боссу. Inscryption предлагает тот же подход: выбираем, куда двигаться дальше, и сталкиваемся с различными событиями — от простых боев до случайных встреч.

Последние особенно хороши. Так, например, можно столкнуться на тракте с голодными путниками, которые призывают посидеть у костра со своими зверями. Карты от этого улучшаются, но всегда есть опасность, что зверя съедят и игрок навсегда лишится карты. Есть алтари: с их помощью можно принести одно существо в жертву, чтобы передать его свойства другому (как раз об этом говорилось чуть выше). Странные ученые-микологи могут «сшить» две одинаковые карты в одну, придав ей удвоение силы и здоровья при сохранении стоимости. И, конечно, есть встречи с новыми животными, которые готовы пополнить колоду игрока.

В конце каждой приключенческой карты ждет босс, несколько меняющий правила игры. Например, первый из них, Старатель, может превращать карты пользователя в золото, чем сильно мешает прохождению. Для победы приходится изрядно постараться — причем не только в самой карточной игре.

Даниэль Маллинс не был бы собой, если бы не спрятал в свою игру множество секретов и тайн. Сама хижина существа, с которым приходится играть в карты, уже полна головоломок, решения которых не всегда так уж очевидны. Вскоре после начала карточной партии пара глаз во тьме попросит вас встать из-за стола и подать канделябр. В этот момент игроку дозволено осмотреться. И здесь есть на что взглянуть: на стене висят часы с кукушкой, молоток и волшебный посох, неподалеку расположен сейф с кодовым замком, из загадочной двери то и дело видны вспышки света, а за владельцем хижины стоит не только фигурка волка в клетке, но и ящик с замочной скважиной. И это не считая статуэтки белки, сжимающей в лапах кинжал, и картины, на которой изображено игровое поле с определенной выкладкой карт.

Каждый из вышеописанных объектов скрывает определенный секрет, который еще нужно понять и найти. Некоторые из них будут почти автоматически решаться (например, говорящая карта горностая даст подсказку, как открыть сейф, если игрок сам не найдет верное решение), в то время как другие могут остаться нерешенными даже после полного прохождения.

Отдельно стоит отметить, что в игре есть ряд механических лазеек вроде возможности перезапустить бой без потери прогресса. Вот только за их использование игра скорее наказывает. Помните, что проигрыш — часть местного прогресса, которым не стоит пренебрегать.

…Но ведь Маллинс не был бы самим собой, если бы на этом все закончилось, верно? Дальше пойдут спойлеры, мы предупредили.

До выхода Inscryption разработчик успел выпустить две коммерческие игры: Pony Island и The Hex. Первая за фасадом доброй аркады про волшебных пони скрывает метанарратив о душах, заключенных дьяволом в аркадном автомате, а игроку то и дело приходится обманом находить способы пройти непроходимое. The Hex предлагает взглянуть на таверну, полную забытых персонажей из старых игр, и тоже отлично ломает четвертую стену. А еще она регулярно меняет геймплейные правила: на смену платформеру приходит файтинг, за ним геймер окунается в ролевую игру, и полируется всё топ-даун шутером.

Обе игры связаны общим нарративом, который выходит далеко за рамки геймплея. На манер ARG (Alternate Reality Game — «игра в альтернативной реальности») Маллинс зашивал множество секретов и тайн, найти которые могли только самые внимательные и дотошные игроки. «Настоящая» концовка The Hex, например, находится вообще в другой бесплатной игре (название которой рекомендую все же найти самостоятельно). Нарратив этот перекинулся и в Inscryption.

В трейлерах можно увидеть некоего Люка Кардера, который ведет свой канал на YouTube и как-то связан с игрой. И после «прохождения» и победы над владельцем хижины геймеры наконец-то получают возможность узнать немного о загадочном персонаже из видео.

С этого момента игра резко меняет правила. Получив наконец возможность запустить «Новую игру», пользователь открывает принципиально новый геймплей и изрядную порцию информации, никак, на первый взгляд, не связанной со всем ранее увиденным. Однако чем дальше закапывается игрок, тем плотнее становится клубок, тончайшую нить которого дает Inscryption в самом начале.

Разрушение ожиданий

Говорить, что ждет геймеров дальше, — значит ломать удовольствие тем, кто решит пройти Inscryption самостоятельно. Стоит разве что отметить, что хижина в лесу и ее секреты — это от силы треть контента и с каждым последующим событием правила карточных игр будут меняться и усложняться, не теряя при этом в проработке. Покупая одну игру, пользователь получает в одной обертке куда больше, чем карточный роуглайт-хоррор о безумном обитателе лесной избушки. Рекламные материалы, конечно, не врут, но, мягко говоря, многое недоговаривают.

Даже пройдя Inscryption до конца, пользователь вряд ли сумеет с ходу раскрыть все ее секреты: многие из них спрятаны очень уж хорошо. А если тайтл хоть чем-то похож на предыдущие — стоит ждать, что за оберткой скрывается очередная ARG и без манипуляций с файлами на ПК вряд ли получится по-настоящему «пройти» ее от начала до конца.

P. S. Кстати, та самая игра, скрывающая настоящую концовку The Hex, обновилась после выхода Inscryption. И на момент, пока я пишу эти строки, никто не знает, что именно в ней изменилось. А при условии, что все тайтлы связаны одной фиктивной компанией (существующей только во вселенной игр Маллинса), стоящей за кадром, удивляться особо нечему. Впереди долгое и удивительное приключение, конец которого увидят далеко не все.
