I decided to give this game another change after playing it years ago and I’m about to have an anxiety attack with the confusing UI.

Where is the join crew? Please do not tell me its the «Open Crew» option that has taken me like 20 solid mins to actually get in a game with another person. I don’t remember it being this hard to get with other plays.

There is also discord to meet people and create a crew

Yea I’m not relying on discord or other resources to get in a game. I’v been playing fighting games for 20 I have had enough of that thank you very much.

I just want to boot up a game and play it with a bunch of asterisk’s and caveats attached.

Open Crew will either spawn you solo, or put you in someone else’s crew. If you spawn solo then at any time someone else will randomly join your ship. Neither method should take 20 minutes, something is up. If you chose open crew and it does a search that takes longer than a few seconds, it should spawn you solo (with a slot still open for the next guy to drop in).

If you click the invite button at the bottom you can invite XBox client friends directly to the roster before launching the game.

Looking to set up your crew? Here’s our guide on how to send and receive invites for Sea of Thieves on Steam!

When launching the game, you will be prompted to sign in with a Microsoft account. Make sure this is the account you want to play Sea of Thieves on as this profile will be used to send and receive invites.

After selecting your ship type and loading into the pre-game lobby, you will see an option in the bottom left corner to “Invite Friends”. After clicking this, a list of your added friends will appear for you to invite!

If you haven’t added any friends yet, hit Win+G to open the Xbox Game Bar where you can add friends via the Xbox Social tab. Alternatively, friend requests can be managed through the Xbox Console Companion app!

Press esc (or the corresponding button on controller) to open the pause menu. Select “My Crew”, then click on “Invite Friends” in the bottom left corner where your list of friends will appear. From here, you can invite your friends to join your crew.

Whilst playing Sea of Thieves, invites will appear as a pop-up message that can be accepted to join the game. Outside of the Sea of Thieves game, invites will be accessible through Xbox Game Bar.

If you’re actively sailing the seas, you can also find received crew invitations in the ‘Game Invites’ section of the in-game pause menu, found by pressing esc (or the corresponding button on controller). The pause menu’s third option, ‘Invites’, will hold any crew invites you have received.

You can also join a friend’s game in progress by right clicking their Xbox Gamertag and selecting “Join Game” whilst in the Xbox Game Bar!

Teaming up with other players from around the world is critical in Sea of Thieves, as you’re going to want to form the strongest crew you can to take on the toughest voyages. In this Sea of Thieves crew guide, we’ll be walking you through how to play Sea of Thieves online, as well as how to play Sea of Thieves solo on your own.

How to Join a Crew in Sea of Thieves

Whether it’s your first time playing Sea of Thieves or not, you’re always going to be taken to a screen where you’ll have to choose which type of ship you want to set sail on. At this ship selector screen which you can see pictured just below, you’re going to be presented with the opportunity to either join a massive galleon, the biggest ship there is in Sea of Thieves, or the far smaller sloop ship for solo adventuring.

This is Sea of Thieves’ way of asking you whether you want to play online with other players from around the globe, or whether you want to set sail by yourself. If you select the smaller sloop ship, you’ll immediately set sail on your own, arriving in the tavern from which you can embark on your solo voyage (we should mention that although you’re on your own ship, the larger world is still inhabited by other players).

However if you select the galleon option, then you’ll be taken to a screen which gives you the opportunity to invite other players into your game manually. This is the way you can play with your friends in Sea of Thieves, as it’s on this screen that you can select on the option to ‘Invite a Player’, and select someone from your friends list that wants to join your Sea of Thieves adventure.

However if you simply want to join three other random players from around the globe, then go ahead and select the option to launch the game, and Sea of Thieves will match you up with three other players. We should note that if you’re playing Sea of Thieves on a PC and you’re matched up with randoms, you can press T to start typing in the chat, communicating with your fellow crew if you’re not using a headset.

We should note that while you’re playing on your own sloop ship, you can actually run into hostile player crews on a galleon. Although this might seem like a bit of an unfair situation, the sloop is far quicker than the galleon, meaning that if you encounter a crew of hostile players, you can beat a hasty retreat away from them with any treasure you’ve got on board.
