How to Win a Street Fight
Before we continue with this article, we want to stress the importance of attempting to solve a problem without physical altercation. Try your best to deescalate a situation before it becomes a fist fight. There are obviously many dangers when you’re fighting someone, not only from the impact you make on each other, but the impact of someones head bouncing off concrete. A head bouncing off concrete can lead to many problems such as concussion or death.
Keep these possibilities in mind when you’re angry and about to let fists fly. A street fight isn’t worth someones life, no matter how angry you are at the time. If you would like to be trained for real life self-defense situations, please visit our article on the 10 Reasons Why You Should Study Martial Arts. I always try to avoid street fights when I can, however this guide will still do a great job in teaching you how to win a street fight.
What Not to do in a Fight
Knowing what not to do in a physical fight is just as important as knowing what to do. When an attacker comes into striking range with you, the worst thing you can do is let your guard down. Watch your opponents body language, if they clinch their fist they are most likely preparing to punch you. Continue to step back and keep a good distance while talking to your opponent. Stay out of striking range while they are still being aggressive.
Remember, your opponent could be on drugs or could possible have a weapon. This is especially dangerous when the opponent is a random stranger being aggressive towards you. Don’t assume a fighting stance yet if the situation can still be defused. However the moment that a physical altercation takes place, assume a good fighting stance and posture so that you’re not easily moved. DO NOT LET YOUR GUARD DOWN, under any circumstance. This is especially important in a street fight where there are no rules.
Example of a good fighting stance:
The reasons why this is a good fighting stance:
– Hands are up and alert, always stay active with your hands, never let your guard down in a street fight.
– Proper foot position. It doesn’t matter if you stand with your right foot first (southpaw) or your left foot first (orthodox), however always make sure that your rear foot is at a 45 degree angle, and at a good space from your front foot. (around shoulder length apart)
– Chin tucked! This is so important, keeping your chin high in the air will leave you susceptible to getting knocked out.
Throw the First Punch
Believe it or not, we’re completely serious. If you believe a situation has escalated to the point of no return, throw the first punch, especially if your opponent is bigger than you. The best advantage you can give yourself is ending a fight before your opponent even gets a chance to react. Throwing a punch that lands clean will possibly rock your opponent, or at minimum create the opportunity to throw more punches. Landing with a clean punch will help you end a street fight before it even starts.
Push forward and be aggressive, if the fight goes to the ground then use grappling to submit your opponent (we’ll talk more about this later). Once you have the advantage, don’t let up until you sense there is no more danger. This DOES NOT mean continue punching an unconscious opponent. If you knock out or choke out your opponent, get up and stop attacking them. Continuing to punch or choke an unconscious opponent can lead to serious brain damage, or even death.
Street Fighting Scenarios
Scenario 1: Standup Fist Fight
This type of fight is usually when two people stand up and trade blows, this is usually agreed upon beforehand because most street fights usually make their way on the ground. A standup fist fight has a high chance of a knockout, because the typical untrained fighter will typically swing their fists recklessly. This usually involves reckless swinging with chins up and absolutely no defense. Don’t let this be you, don’t leave yourself susceptible to a knockout in the street, because you never know if your opponent will stop after you’re unconscious. This is another reason why it’s so important to win a street fight and not be on the losing end.
You can practice standup fighting by shadow boxing in the mirror. Throw basic punch combinations and work on your footwork and head movement. If you need more tips on how to improve your standup fighting or boxing, please visit our guide on how to become a better boxer.
Be ready for the right hand
The most common first punch thrown in a fight is the right hand or right hook.
Video example on how to defend against this:
Scenario 2: Fighting on the ground
As we explained earlier, almost all street fights will eventually go to the ground. This can happen from someone being punched and knocked down, or it can happen from someone being tackled or taken down. This type of fighting will be an advantage for people who have wrestled in school. The best thing you can do in this situation is get in a dominate position. Either get on top of a person in a mount position, or get behind a person and take their back.
Mount position
This position is great because you’re able to do some good ground and pound, which will eventually lead to your opponent rolling over (and then you’ll have their back). In the mount position you can throw all types of strikes at your opponent, like punches and elbows. Be careful if you’re on a concrete type of surface such as the street or sidewalk. Hitting the back of your head or your opponents head off of concrete can lead to serious brain damage or death. Also, be careful when throwing punches while grounded on a concrete surface, it’s very possible to break your hand off the ground if you miss your opponent.
Example of a mounted position:
Take your opponents back
When you’re in the mount position and inflicting serious damage on your opponent, they will eventually roll onto their stomach. This is the perfect time to take their back and end the fight with a submission. The most common submission is the rear naked choke because it’s quick and effective. When you have your opponents back it just happens to be the perfect position to choke them. If you start choking your opponent chances are that you’ve won your street fight, however don’t let your guard down for one moment during or after the choke.
Video example explaining the steps of a rear naked choke:
After the Fight is Over
Be respectful after the fight is over, while also being aware of any other possible attackers, especially if the person you just fought isn’t alone. If you win the fight and your opponent is with friends, those friends might want a round two (or some sort of redemption for their friend). You always need to keep your guard up before, during, and immediately after a street fight. I hope that this article has given you the confidence to win a street fight, however I hope that you’re never in this situation.

Iconic fighting
It’s not surprising to mention the dawn of gaming whilst talking about Street Fighter. Ryu and Sagat fought each other long before the Internet and the first PlayStation. In the past, most players had to visit arcades for a chance to prove their skills in fighting matches. Street Fighter is one of the longest and the most successful game series, and the fifth installment is its decent continuation.
The list of Street Fighter games includes lots of titles. Everything is simpler if you divide all Street Fighter Games into the categories:
You also can meet SF characters in such games:
From where to start?
You have quite a few choices here, so it is easier to say what not to do from the very beginning. Don’t rush into online matches and especially ranked. You will meet their serious players, able to smash your enthusiasm. Take your time to learn the basics.
In fact, it would be better to start Street Fighter V with… setting your goals. Ok, you don’t really need to decide something specific. Just decide on your “league”:
For all the beginners in Street Fighter games, it would be wise to finish the Tutorial. In fact, the game starts with it, and then you can play it again. The Tutorial explains the basic movements and attacks. Of course, knowing them is not the same as using them in super fast fights. But without this knowledge, you will rather mash buttons and not play effectively.
Also, we invite newcomers to check out our article Street Fighter 5: Tips for Beginners.
So many fighters!
One of the best Street Fighter tips is to choose your hero first. Usually, professional players have one fighter they practice with. Time is needed to master many tricks and specific features of Street Fighter 5 characters, so don’t waste it on those who you don’t like from the very beginning.
Street Fighter V: Champion Edition offers 40 characters. The developers are planning to add five more in 2020, so the total number will be 45 fighters.
Each of them is a personality with a story and different values of:
Those who dream about an esports career in Street Fighter or just consider this possibility should take their time and play throughout all the character stories. Understanding your opponents is a crucial thing in a winning strategy.
Modes to play Street Fighter 5 better
Here you have a chance to learn combos in the Trials section. Just complete challenges for each character and you will know them and the whole game much better. In the Demonstration section, you’ll find lots of helpful content. It is divided by the level of players: beginners, intermediate, experts.
It doesn’t offer the adrenaline of fights but here you can work on various aspects of the game. Training matches have lots of customization options and various metrics.
Here, players can train their durability. You will face many opponents in a row with the possibility to power up before harder fights. Choose here from easy (10), normal (30), hard (50), or hell (100) battles.
Hardcore gamers can’t miss these modes. They are optional but highly recommended for casual players. Read more in the guide Various modes of Street Fighter V.
Online fights
Beginners should still be careful here. The Ranked Matches can be very stressful because people come here with serious intentions to win and improve their online rank. A better way to feel the excitement of multiplayer is to join Casual Matches. Players mostly practice and have fun here, so you can do the same.
For fighting on your own terms, create your Battle Lounge, and invite people to join. It is possible to change the time of battles, the number of rounds, and set some special conditions.
In the game, you can look at profiles of other players and even watch their matches. Visit the section Capcom Fighters Network for this.
Basic attacks in Street Fighter V
So, what’s about the actual fighting techniques?
Before delving into tricky combos and moves, beginners should learn properly the basic attacks. Of course, the in-game tutorial explains a lot, and still, having a fast reminder and clear explanation may be a very good idea.
Each character in Street Fighter V can perform:
The fighters attack with their hands and feets, so their attacks are:
Light punches and kicks (jabs) are fast but not really powerful. You can’t expect to win only with them, but these attacks can be very helpful in some situations. For example, when you need to stop the series of your opponent’s attacks.
Medium punches (hits) are quite effective in the close range. Medium kicks are better for the medium range, when you prefer to keep a distance.
Hard punches and kicks (wallops) are slow but very effective. Your character becomes quite vulnerable when the opponent blocks wallops.
SFV Movements and Blocks
Everything is quite straightforward with movements (in fact, like in most of the fighting games, such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate). Your character can walk, dash, and jump.
Press D-Pad (or the left stick) right or left. While walking, you can do any action very fast: attack, block, jump, or dash.
To move much faster, make a double-tap right or left. The fighter will dash to a short distance and they will be very vulnerable during this period, so use dashing cautiously. Dashing is good for escaping attacks.
Throws, Special Moves, and Combos
You can press two attack buttons at the same time or a combination of buttons and perform some unique actions.
Activate them with the light punch and light kick buttons. Your fighter should stay close to the opponent to throw them and deal damage. Combine this with the back button and you throw the opponent backward. It’s hard to see a throw coming, but you can guess such an action of your opponent and prevent it by performing your throw at the same time.
Usually, after a normal attack your character should recover for performing the next one. You can act fast and cancel the recovery and activate a special move immediately. This action is called a combo. Do it just after the first attack hits.
Recovery from knockdowns
It’s ok to see your character on the floor in Street Fighter V. This happens after throws, hard kicks from the crouching position, and some special moves. To stand up, you can:
Let’s take a closer look at this topic in the guide Street Fighter V: Knockdowns.
Crush Counters
Crush Counter in Street Fighter is quite an advanced technique, it asks for a very good understanding of your opponents. We will talk about Crush Counters in more detail on DashFight later.
Stick or D-Pad? Controller or Fighting Stick?
Most of the beginners prefer playing Street Fighter V with a normal console controller. Even if you play on a PC, it’s better to use a gamepad.
But how to control movements? You can do it with the D-Pad or left stick. Many fighting gamers recommend D-Pad. With it, you have a better control on the situation.
Special fightpads and fighting sticks may be a good idea. But you better be sure you really like SFV or other fighting games (Tekken 7, for example) before investing in such hardware.
Versions of Street Fighter V
The original release of Street Fighter V was in 2016. Then, we had two updates: the Arcade Edition in 2018 and the Champion Edition in 2020. Both added new characters and brought nice improvements.
For now, you have two choices:

How To Survive and Thrive In a Street Fight in 8 Simple Steps
Let’s say you’re out with your buddies (or maybe a lovely young lady) having a good time, when all of a sudden some jackass shoves you. You didn’t do anything to instigate the guy, but it doesn’t matter.
There is a special breed of males, that when inebriated, start fights with random people. This breed, when found in their wild habitat, are often accompanied by their similarly boneheaded buddies.
Or perhaps you and your posse end up in a rumble with the Socs because one of your buddies killed a Soc while trying to save Ponyboy from being drowned by a douche bag Soc. Man, I hate them Socs. Stay golden Ponyboy.
What can you do to prepare for a street brawl and protect yourself in this type of situation? Here are 8 simple steps you can follow to avoid ending up in the emergency room after a street fight.
1. Wake up! When someone threatens you, snap to attention. Be aware of your environment. Look for objects that you can use for weapons. Searching out a place to escape to is especially important if you’re outnumbered.
2. Try to defuse the situation. Try to talk with the guy and calm him down. If you did something unknowingly that offended him (like looking at him funny), then apologize. Don’t let your ego get in the way of apologizing for something you didn’t do. Your first goal should be to avoid fighting. Maintain confident body language. Don’t show the guy you’re afraid.
Listen to our podcast on dealing with aggressive people:
3. Walk away. If talking to the knucklehead doesn’t work, start to leave the scene. But maintain alertness and walk away backwards, still facing your opponent. If he’s a no-good, yellow-belly rat, he’ll attack you from behind.
4. Assume a fighting position. If the jerk is still threatening you and you have nowhere to go, assume a stable fighting stance. Spread your stance to about shoulder width-apart and slightly bend your knees. The goal is to maintain balance so you don’t end up on the ground. Keep your hands up to protect your face and clench your teeth. A solid punch to an open mouth can lead to a broken jaw.
5. Defend yourself. The goal is to defend yourself from violent and unjustified aggression, so don’t be afraid to fight dirty. If you have any object to use as a weapon, use it. This can be anything like a chair, a bottle (extra man points for first breaking the bottle and then thrusting the jagged part at your opponent), or a 2X4. Here are some other techniques that could be used in this sort of situation:
Listen to our podcast on when violence really is the answer:
6. Take punches effectively. While you should do your damnedest to avoid getting punched, you can’t avoid them all. If you have to take a punch, strive to absorb it in a way that minimizes the impact and damage..
7. Give your best war cry. While defending yourself, make as much noise as possible. There are two reasons for this. First is the intimidation factor. Yelling may distract and intimidate your attackers, leaving you a better chance of getting in some good blows or getting away. The second reason is to draw attention. The more people who gather around you, the easier to call a douche bag’s bluff.
8. Make your escape. After you have incapacitated your attacker using the methods described above, get the hell out of there.

At some point in your life, you may find yourself in a situation where you have to defend yourself from one or more opponents. A street fight won’t follow rules or niceties; if you find yourself in this situation, you need to do as much as possible to defend yourself and avoid getting seriously hurt. Bear in mind that use of excessive force is illegal but that defending yourself is not, so remember that the aim is to protect yourself and get out of there as quickly as you can.

How to Punch Harder in a Street Fight? (7 Street Fighting Techniques)
A street fight is something that almost everyone experiences somewhere in life. In fact, nowadays it has become so common that many consider it a standard form of entertainment. The bad thing is that street fighting is very dangerous due to its unpredictable and violent nature. The best advice for a street fight is to try your best to avoid the fight, but sometimes it’s simply not possible to avoid it. In such a situation, a person must be trained well to defend and protect himself from the offender.
In this post, you’ll read: how to punch harder in a street fight?
In order to throw the hardest punch in a street fight, you should condition your knuckles as there is no gloves or safety gadget. After this, your footwork matters alot. Remember pushing hard does not initiate powerful hitting.
A boxer must learn how to punch harder in a street fight as fighting in a street is different from fighting in a ring. It’s also recommended to keep this self-defense equipment in your pocket all the time to be on the safe side.
7 Techniques to Punch Harder For Street Fights
Since a street fight has no rules and is fought without gloves, you should practice for it keeping the street fight’s scenario in mind.
Following are the tips that would help you perform better in a street fight.
1) Condition Your Knuckles
In a street fight, there are no gloves or protective equipment. One has to fight with bare fists, and punching someone’s jaw or head with naked fists can result in deep cuts to your skin or fracturing of the knuckles.
Since the fists are basically not made for punching, they need to be strengthened and conditioned for this job. A practical boxer will not only learn how to punch the head with bare knuckles but also strengthen the tools involved in it.
So, the first thing you need to do is to condition your hands for a street fight by training on a heavy bag(see my recommended heavy bag here) regularly with bare fists. This would help you strengthen your bones and make your skin tougher, thus minimizing the chances of injury to your hand in case you punch someone with a bare fist.
2) Throw the First Punch
Keep an eye on your opponent’s hand and body language. If he has his fists clenched and it’s clear that you’re in danger and the situation has reached the point of no return, then throw the first punch, and don’t wait for your opponent to hit you. The winner of a fight is usually the one who attacks first. It’s difficult to win a fight if you are in defense mode right from the beginning.
The best advantage you can get from it is to end the fight even before your opponent gets the time to react. Throwing a punch, that lands in the right place would either knock out your opponent or create the opportunity for you to throw more punches.
So, keep pushing forward and be aggressive especially if your opponent is bigger than you.
3) Punch Hard in a Street Fight
Increase your general punching power. I’ll discuss that in detail in the next section.
A Single powerful punch is better at knocking your opponent down than many weak punches. So develop some extra power in your punches by doing some regular workouts on a punching bag.
4) Hit, Don’t Push
Your punches should be hitting your opponent and not pushing him. Retract your hand immediately after hitting the opponent’s body. Pushing with your punches will decrease your speed and make you tired earlier.
5) Bend Your Knees
Bending the knees is a basic rule in boxing. Bending the knees lowers your center of gravity and increases your surface area. This increases your stability and decreases your chances of losing balance in the fight.
Moreover, it also increases your punching power by improving the force transmission from all over your body.
6)Move Away After Attacking
There are chances that your opponent will throw punches after you have taken your turn. So, don’t forget to do the footwork and move away when you want to give a pause between the punches. This will you help you protect yourself from your opponent’s punches and kicks.
7 Tips to Increase Your General Punching Power
The higher your strength and general punching power the harder you’ll be able to hit in a street fight. So, if you want to perform better in a street fight, you should do some practice and workouts to improve your punching power in general.
Following are some useful tips that would help you improve your punching power.
1) Master Your Technique
You can punch harder only if you are using the right technique. Using the right technique will not only improve your punch power but also increases your punch efficiency and accuracy.
2) Build Your Muscles.
Getting stronger increases your punch power. The stronger you are the more powerful your punches would be. Most boxers perform exercises to strengthen their leg and core muscles.
Weight lifting also helps to some extent. However, increasing the muscle mass too much can decrease your speed, resulting in a net loss of power. So, exercises like squats (see recommended read for squats), rotational core works, polymetric push-ups, and single handball throws can help you improve your strength.
3) Learn Force Transmission
The most emphasized factor in boxing training is to learn how to transmit force all the way from your feet to your hand. This is much more important than developing your muscles and increasing your strength. Boxing is a full-body movement. Only using your arms to generate force renders your punches ineffective.
You would have heard that Mike Tyson’s knockout power came from his toes and that’s 100% correct. An expert boxer’s punch starts right from the toe and reaches all the way to the fist.
4) Improve Your Body Rotation
Rotation of your shoulders and torso adds extra velocity to your punches. This additional torque can increase your force several folds.
So, perform exercises that improve your body rotation.
5) Increase Your Speed
Power is a product of speed and mass. So, improving the speed can compensate for a heavy hand. There are several exercises that can help you increase your punching speed. You can use a speed bag instead of a heavy bag if your aim is to increase your punching speed rather than your power.
6) Improve Punch Accuracy
Throwing punches precisely on a moving target is not easy. Punching power is useless if you can’t hit the target. Hitting areas other than what you aimed at can result in severe damage to your knuckles.
You can use speed bags and double-end bags to improve accuracy. Sparring is the best way to increase punch accuracy and coordination.
7) Strengthen Your Legs
As I’ve already stated, boxing is a full-body exercise. You have to move your legs a lot while boxing. Moreover, keeping the knees bent also needs strong muscles. You can strengthen your leg muscles with squats, running, and cycling.
Common Mistakes in a Street Fight
These are the mistake that you need to avoid if you don’t want to face any epic fails in a street fight.
1) Allowing Someone to Make the First Move.
It’s nice if you want to avoid fighting and not hurt someone, but waiting too long to take action for self-defense is one of the biggest fails in a fight
It doesn’t mean that you should start every argument with a punch. Just be alert and capable of recognizing the signals of violence. At least look for warning signs of aggression from your opponent so that you can change your location or position to decrease your venerability to a punch.
It’s not only about punching first, it’s actually prevention and control. You have to gain control of the situation for your own safety. You can’t afford to lose a street fight as you don’t know what the opponent’s going to do with you after knocking you down.
2) Assuming that Your Opponent will Move as You Expect
One of the biggest challenges of a fight is to guess how your opponent will move. There are some general standardized ways of moving and attacking the ringside. It’s easier to figure out the movement of your opponent in a regular fight, but in a street fight, it becomes much more difficult to guess how will your opponent move.
So, try not to get knocked out by a single punch. It’s important to not expect that the opponent will attack you in a certain way and be prepared for an attack from any direction.
3) Believing That You Won’t be Hurt
Some people don’t care much about their safety and think that they are untouchable. This makes them a bit careless during a confrontation. They think that they won’t be punched in the face in a real fight and that is, of course, a totally wrong presumption.
This makes any punch surprising for them and their chances of surviving an unexpected punch are almost equal to none.
Tips on How to Avoid Fracturing Your Knuckles In Streer Fight
It’s quite common to get your skin bruised or knuckles fractured during a fistfight. Hitting an unpadded skull with an unprotected fist results in Boxer’s Fracture.
Taking the following precautions would help you minimize the chances of breaking your hand.
Make a Really Tight Fist
Making a tight fist is the most important protective measure against getting your hand injured.
It’s not a big deal. You can make a tight fist as follows. First, extend your hand completely. Roll over you’re finger until your nails dig into your palm. Place your thumb between the first and second finger joint so that it tightens the fist. That’s it.
Don’t Hit a Very Hard Area
You should in the first place try to hit the softer parts of the body like the ribs, abdomen or liver, etc. However, if you really want to punch your opponent in the head, then don’t aim for the top of the head, brow, and forehead as the bone in these areas is the thickest.
So, to be safe, aim for the chin, nose, jaw, and the side of the neck.
Punch With the Index and Middle Finger
Hitting with the index and middle fingers is the safest method of punching. This position might feel awkward but it’s the most natural position for a punch. It aligns your fist with your wrist and forearm, reducing the risk of any fracture at the wrist joint. You will have to do some practice in order to be able to hit with these two fingers consciously.
How To Punch Harder If You Are Skinny
Even if you are very thin and skinny, you can punch hard with enormous power. Many boxers were like Tommy Hearns would punch with a huge force despite being skinny. All you need to punch hard is the appropriate training and genetic factors to maximize your force.
Five Reasons A Skinny Person Can Punch Hard
Low Fat
Most people that are skinny look so only because they have lesser amount of body fat i.e 5-8%. This doesn’t mean they lack in the mass of the muscles too. An apparently skinny person can push as hard as anyone.
Length of The Muscle Belly
Even if a person has low muscle mass, he can punch harder. The reason is that muscle mass is not the sole determinant of punching power. Length of your muscle is also important when it comes to punching power.
If a person has a longer muscle, his punching power will be less compared to the person with shorter muscles.
Fast Twitch To Slow Twitch Muscle Ratio
There are two types of fiber in our muscles. Fast-twitch and slow-twitch muscle fiber. Slow-twitch musle fibers are suitable for long-term use and endurance. On the other hand, fast-twitch fibers are for extreme and explosive powers. Our muscles have both of these fibers in variable proportions.
A person having higher proportion of fast-twitch fibers will punch harder even if he is skinny and have very low muscle mass. This ratio is something determined by genetics and cannot be increased by any means.
Location of The Muscle’s Insertion
Insertion is the point where a muscle is anchored into a movable bone. If the location of a muscle is away from a joint, it makes that muscle much stronger than a similar muscle with insertion near a joint. That the reason some athletes are so powerful despite being skinny and thin.
Timing and Reflexes
The timing of throwing a punch and the coordination of the punch with the rest of the body is one of the most important determining factors of a powerful punch. The difference between a professional boxer and a normal person is that a boxer know how to throw a punch the right way. That’s all you need to learn and you’ll be able to throw deadly punches even if you are skinny.

Should you hit first in a fight?
It’s not a good idea to initiate a fight by hitting first. The best way is to hit in dense when you’re attacked. If you hit first, it means you are inviting the opponent to attack.
