The given chart illustrates the frequency the Americans consumed fast food in restaurants during the 10-year period, from 2003 to 2013.

Overall, throughout the surveyed period, most Americans ate fast food moderately, while the percentage of people never ate or ate on daily basis remained low.

In 2003 and 2006, a similar pattern occurred as 31% and 33% of people in the US chose to consume fast food once a week, the highest figure in both years. Coming in close second, short by 1% and 8% were the ratios of people eating it once or twice a month. Meanwhile, the lowest figures belong to eat.

The chart below shows how frequently people in the USA ate in fast food restaurants between 2003 and 2013.

(Source: Cambridge IELTS 12)

Here’s my full sample answer. Fill the gaps to complete it.

The bar chart illustrates the frequency with ______ Americans ate in fast food establishments from 2003 to 2013.

It is clear that the majority of Americans ate in fast food restaurants between once a week and once a month in all three years. We can also see a shift ______ eating in these restaurants less frequently by the end of the 10-year period.

In each of the years shown on the chart, ______ to 60% of people in the US ate in fast food restaurants between once and four times a month. Roughly 15 to 20% of Americans ______ eating in fast food outlets several times per week, while 3 to 4% of people ate in these outlets daily. At the other ______ of the scale, around 4% of people avoided fast food restaurants completely.

Between 2006 and 2013, the total proportion of Americans who ate in fast food establishments either once a week or several times a week ______ by almost 10%. At the same time, there was an ______ of around 8% in the ‘once or twice a month’ category. In other words, the weekly fast food habit that was ______ in 2003 and 2006 became a monthly or twice monthly habit in 2013.

If you add together the middle two columns, you get close to 60%.

«between one and four times a month» seems more common.

It seems that Simon left «A few times a year» category out?

Thanks for your positive comment about the quality of my lessons!

My reason for choosing to add the two middle columns was that I wanted to give a figure that supported the statement I had made in the first sentence of my overview (the majority. between once a week and once a month).

Yes, I’m sure it’s more common to write «between one and four times». I almost wrote this myself, and it’s probably what I would say and write normally.

However, both ways are fine, and I chose «once» because I thought it would help me to avoid any grammar questions. I imagined that someone would ask me why I put «one» and «times» (singular and plural) together.

As «once» means «one time», I’m really saying «between one time and four times» (i.e. I’m separating singular and plural). «Between one and four times» is common because it seems to flow better, but I suppose it does contain a little imperfection from a grammar perspective.

Yes, I did miss that category out. I just didn’t have time to include it, and I don’t think it contains any key information.

Hi,Simon. I’m confused for a long time. Generally speaking, is there any information we can’t leave out? And what kind of information can we decide whether or not to write about by ourselves?

The implication is that details must be accurate, and should support the key features outlined in the overview, as a minimum. There is no specific requirement to mention every single figure. On some charts there is so much information that the only way is to group detail together.

As a rule of thumb, try to mention each category once, but do not overrun twenty minutes as Task 2 counts for twice the marks.

The bar chart illustrates the frequency of American people went to fast food restaurants in 2003, 2006, and 2013. Overall, a considerable amount of the USA residents ate fast food once a week in 2003 and 2006, while more people went to fast food restaurants one or two times every month in 2013.

First of all, in 2003, 4% of the individuals ate fast food every day. This ratio jumped to its four times at 16% in the next group and then peaking at 30%. After experiencing a gradual decrease, the figure dramatically fell to the final statistic of 5% in those never eating fast food. Similarly, this trend also can be viewed in 2006 but in a more significant way. The percentage firstly started at 3% before soaring to 20% in the next group. After levelling off at 32%, it steadily dropped to 4% in the end.

As for the year of 2013, a same initial proportion was recorded as that in 2006. Therefore, it sustainably climbed to the highest point at 32% in the group of eating junk food once or twice a month. The last two groups also shared the same rates with that in 2006, constituting 15% and 4% respectively.

Essay evaluation report

flaws:
1. It is not clear to say ‘in the next group’ or ‘The last two groups’. need to make them clear.

2. the summary is not only for the peak ones, it is for overall, better like this:

Overall, throughout the surveyed period, most Americans ate fast food moderately, while the percentage of people never ate or ate on daily basis remained low.

3. for this topic, better to compare by categories, not by years. when it is by years, it is hard to figure out what is the ‘main features’. but by category, it is easier to figure out:

‘every day’ and ‘never’ share the same pattern.

‘once a week’ and ‘several times a week’ share the same pattern.

in 2013, people eat less fast food, the top one is ‘once or twice a month’,

(203 Words, 9 Sentences, 4 Paragraphs, Band 9)

The bar chart illustrates the frequency with which Americans ate in fast food establishments from 2003 to 2013.

It is clear that the majority of Americans ate in fast food restaurants between once a week and once a month in all three years. We can also see a shift towards eating in these restaurants less frequently by the end of the 10-year period.

In each of the years shown on the chart, close to 60% of people in the US ate in fast food restaurants between once and four times a month. Roughly 15 to 20% of Americans reported eating in fast food outlets several times per week, while 3 to 4% of people ate in these outlets daily. At the other end of the scale, around 4% of people avoided fast food restaurants completely.

Between 2006 and 2013, the total proportion of Americans who ate in fast food establishments either once a week or several times a week fell by almost 10%. At the same time, there was an increase of around 8% in the ‘once or twice a month’ category. In other words, the weekly fast food habit that was common in 2003 and 2006 became a monthly or twice monthly habit in 2013.
