How to Sync the Xbox 360 Controller to an Xbox 360

Syncing an Xbox 360 controller with an original Xbox 360 is, naturally, the easiest process on this list. Here’s how:

Turn the Xbox 360 on.

Turn the Xbox 360 controller on by pressing and holding the big Guide button in the center.

Press the Wireless Connect button on the Xbox 360. It’s located on the front of the console. You should see the light ring around the console’s power button flash and rotate.

On the Xbox 360 E and S consoles, the Wireless Connect button is found by the controller ports. On the original Xbox 360 console, it’s located near the memory card slots.

While the lights are still flashing, press the Sync button on the controller. It’s located on the gamepad’s backside, next to the wired connection. The Guide Button flashes when the syncing completes.

You’ll know the controller is synchronized with the console when the LEDs around the controller’s Guide Button stop flashing and one LED stays on. The Xbox console shows a similar light, although the Xbox 360 E shows a single solid light around the power button.

How to Connect the Xbox 360 Controller to PC

If you have a wired Xbox 360 controller, you simply need to plug it into an open USB port on your PC. Windows automatically installs the necessary drivers and notifies you when the controller is ready for use.

If your PC doesn’t detect the Xbox 360 controller, try plugging it into a different USB port, then test it again. If it still doesn’t work, make sure Windows is fully updated. Install any updates and try again.

If you want to connect a wireless Xbox 360 controller to a Windows PC, you need a wireless receiver. Microsoft has an official one, but there are also third-party options that work just as well, though they include a couple of extra hoops to jump through. Here’s how to set one up:

Connect the wireless receiver to a spare USB port on your PC. If you’re using the official adaptor, it should automatically launch the driver installation software. Follow the on-screen instructions, then skip to Step 7. If you’re using an unofficial adaptor, follow the steps below.

Use the Windows search box to look for Device Manager, then select it from the results.

You should see one item in the list with a small, yellow triangle, suggesting Windows doesn’t recognize the device. Right-click it and select Properties > Driver > Update Driver.

Select Browse my computer for driver software.

Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.

Scroll down the list and select Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows. Then select Next.

A warning message appears suggesting it can’t confirm whether the driver is compatible. If you’ve followed the steps correctly, it will be. Select Yes and wait for the install to complete. The light on the receiver should then change to a solid green.

Turn your Xbox 360 controller on by pressing and holding the central Guide button. Press the sync button on the wireless receiver, as well as on the controller. They’ll both blink for a few seconds but should then connect. If they don’t, attempt the procedure again and make sure the receiver and controller are near one another.

If the above method doesn’t work, you can download the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller driver from Microsoft’s download website. Just search for “Xbox” in the gaming category, then select Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows. Download the right driver for your operating system, open the file, then follow the on-screen instructions.

How to Connect the Xbox 360 Controller to a Mac

Plug the wireless receiver into your Mac.

Turn your Xbox 360 controller on by pressing and holding the Guide button.

Press the sync button on the wireless receiver, as well as on the controller. They will both blink for a few seconds, but should then connect.

Plug in your wireless receiver

This section only applies to those with wireless controllers. If you’ve got a wired Xbox 360 controller, skip straight to Install software.

For those of you that own wireless Xbox 360 controllers, connecting to a PC isn’t as straightforward as simply plugging in the device. First off, you’ll need to purchase a capable receiver, then run the proper setup wizard.

After purchasing the wireless receiver, connect it to a compatible USB port on your computer (see Figure A below). Once plugged in, a green light will appear on the receiver indicating the device is working properly.

Install software

For the wireless gaming receiver and the wireless Xbox 360 controller to properly sync with one another, users must download the necessary software via Microsoft’s website, or the bundled installation disc packaged with their receiver.

If you have the aforementioned installation CD (probably not, but it’s possible), insert it into your PC’s main optical drive and follow the on-screen wizard. You may need to restart your computer. If not, you can download from the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows link; if wired, select Xbox 360 Controller for Windows instead. Choose which version of Microsoft Windows you’re using — the Windows 7 drivers will work for Windows 8 and Windows 10 — select the operating system language and click Download.

Once the download screen pops up, hit Run and allow the Xbox 360 Accessories Setup program to install the required files. Again, you may be required to restart your computer upon completion of the install.

Syncing the controller

If you’re using a wired controller, just plug it in. You’re good to go. Scroll down to Testing the Controller to make sure everything is working correctly.

If not, you’ll need to connect the wireless Xbox 360 controller with the receiver plugged into your computer. To do so, first turn on the controller by holding down the Xbox Guide button in the center of the controller, and wait for the green backlight to turn on. Afterward, press the connect button on top of the wireless receiver (Figure B) until it begins to flash green, then press the corresponding button on your controller (Figure C).

The pairing process should only take a few seconds, after which the light on the receiver will return to solid green and one of the four corners around the controller’s Guide button will light up (Figure D). If you’re still having issues, check Microsoft’s support page for more help.

Testing the controller

Once the necessary software is installed and the controller plugged in or synced, it’s time to test the connection. Open the Start menu on your PC, click the search menu, and look for “game controllers.” You should see an option that reads: Set up USB game controllers.

To ensure that your controller is functioning properly, test it by turning the joysticks, pulling on the triggers, and pressing all the buttons. If everything is working correctly, you’ll see the corresponding action highlighted in the app. Your system should reflect when every button is pushed. If it’s reflecting all of your actions, it doesn’t matter which area of the screen is lighting up.

Start Playing

To keep things convenient, the company labeled the Xbox 360 controller as the default setup for most new PC games. You likely won’t need to play around with settings or set up key bindings to start playing.

We recommend that you check that your controller is fully paired while you load your game because if the two devices aren’t connected, the game won’t recognize your controller. Some newer games support quick and convenient controller changes; Users can switch to 360 controllers, even if they’re in the middle of playing.

On the Xbox 360 S console, when controllers are connected, they have one of four positions. Each position appears as a lighted section around the console power button and the controller Guide button.

On the 360 E console, a solid green light on the front of the console shows that the controller is connected. To see the player position, look at the ring of light around the Guide button on your controller. It will indicate one of the four position.

If the controller doesn’t turn on, check the batteries in the batteries compartment. Insert fresh/new AA batteries into the battery case and make sure you place them correctly.

To connect more controllers, follow these steps again. You can connect up to four controllers. Each connected controller appears as a lighted section around the console’s power button and around the Guide button in the middle of each controller.

Connect a wired Xbox controller

Plug the Xbox 360 Wired Controller into the USB ports on the front of the Xbox 360 console. To disconnect the controller, pull on the connector, not the cable.

The cable on the Xbox 360 Wired Controller features an inline release. If someone pulls the cable, the inline release reduces the chance of the Xbox 360 console falling.

Wireless controller troubleshooting

If your wireless controller doesn’t turn on, or if it loses power, try the following solutions:

Solution 1: Replace the batteries

Insert a new set of AA alkaline batteries into the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, and then try to turn it on.

Solution 2: Try a different battery pack

If you have another Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, take the battery pack from that controller and attach it to your controller. Then, try turning on your controller. If it works with the different battery pack, your original battery pack might be defective. If your controller is under warranty, you can order a replacement battery pack from Xbox Support. If your controller is out of warranty, you can buy a new battery pack from a retail store.
