You consider yourself a people person
Do you consider yourself a people person?
Let’s face it to be a travel agent you couldn’t have a personality of a shrinking violet! You would have to have personal skills where you were outgoing, vivacious with a happy disposition. Hopefully, selling travel is a pleasurable occupation because you are dealing with people who have probably been saving for many months to be able to spend their hard earned money on a wonderful relaxing holiday or a business person has to go on a business trip and wants to arrive at their destination as fresh and ready for a six hour lecture as possible. If you convey a personable and sunny outlook with an assertive manner then you will immediately put the traveler at ease with the knowledge they are in good hands so they can relax and leave you to get on with your job whilst they can get on with theirs. That is how a successful interaction happens and everyone leaves happy.
«Answer example, «Definitely! People are what make my work so rewarding! I love interacting with all different types of people from all walks of life.»

Interview Question: Do You Consider Yourself Successful?
During an interview, you may be asked, «Do you consider yourself successful? Why?» This question demands self-reflection and self-assessment and can feel a bit challenging to answer. While you might not consider yourself to be a total success, think of the question as an invitation to discuss the professional characteristics that you’re proud of or a particular achievement in one of your past jobs.
Focus on the things you’ve done at work that you’re proud of, and which helped your team and the company succeed.
Your response is also a good indicator of how humble you are—or aren’t. Aim to talk about positive, meaningful achievements without being boastful.
What the Interviewer Really Wants to Know
By asking if you consider yourself successful, the recruiter is trying to assess your past achievements and determine whether you will be driven to achieve such results in the future. This question also allows the recruiter to understand how you define success, and what milestones in your career you consider important.
How to Answer the Question
The easy part of your response is to assert confidently that you do consider yourself a success. Make sure you look the recruiter in the eye and sell the statement with a confident tone, but without bragging.
The more challenging task, however, is to back up your assertion. It’s important to provide the interviewer with evidence of how you achieved success in the workplace.
Provide one or two examples of times when you have set and met a professional goal. Briefly explain how you achieved each success—perhaps you overcame an obstacle, effectively managed a team, or budgeted your time effectively.
The goal is to demonstrate your determination and willingness to take on challenges and achieve results.
You might also mention successes you hope to achieve in the future or are currently working to achieve. For example, if you mention your successful sales record, you may also want to explain how you hope to improve upon that success in the future. It will demonstrate that you are hungry for new challenges in the new position.
Once you have established a basis for professional success, you can add a personal achievement, like being a dedicated dad or marathon runner, to round out your answer.
Examples of the Best Answers
Review examples of answers to questions about whether you’re successful to get ideas for your own response.
Example Answer #1
I do consider myself successful. Because I always go above and beyond for my clients, I have achieved the highest sales record of anyone in my previous office. However, I am not content with that one success. I look forward to working hard to communicate effectively with future clients to improve on my sales record.
Why It Works: This candidate describes a big success and also points out a skill they’re seeking to develop further. That shows they are always pushing to be more successful.
Example Answer #2
Yes, I do consider myself successful. I think my willingness to take on new challenges and work hard sets me up for success. For example, I volunteered to manage a project for my company, which involved managing 20 staff members. I had never managed such a large staff before. However, due to my hard work, effective communication, and clear goals, I effectively managed the team, and we completed our project ahead of schedule. I don’t shy away from a challenge, and I know this would set me up for success at your company.
Why It Works: This candidate does a nice job of sharing previous successes, and also ties their response back to the company at hand.
Example Answer #3
I consider myself successful because of my ability to get along well with others, including employers, staff, and clients. My friendly personality, coupled with my ability to communicate effectively, helps me establish relationships and achieve results, particularly in team projects. Of course, I consider myself to be successful in other areas of my life; seeing three children through high school and college is probably one of my greatest successes!
Why It Works: This person shows themselves to be adept at self-reflection and emphasizes a softskill that’s in highdemand by most employers.
Tips for Giving the Best Response
Keep these strategies in mind:
Plan ahead. Before the interview, look through your resume and jot down one or two of your accomplishments in each role, no matter how small. Think about the situation or challenge you faced when working towards each accomplishment and the skills or knowledge you leveraged to bring about positive results.
Say «yes,» then back it up. It’s hard to imagine a scenario where a candidate would want to say they do not consider themselves to be a success. Start with an affirmative answer. But keep in mind, interviewers are asking this question to learn more about you. So make sure to provide examples of your successes.
Be relevant. You can talk about any qualities or accomplishments that have made you a success. But your answer will be strongest if you focus on assets that correspond to the preferred qualifications of candidates. Tip: You’ll get a sense of what the company wants by carefully reviewing the job listing and spending time on the company website.
What Not to Say
Some responses will leave a bad impression. Try to avoid the following:
Bragging. Yes, interviewers want to hear about your successes. But people don’t respond well to boasting and bragging. Be sure not to tip over the line.
Rambling. Keep your response tight, and avoid going on and on. Share just a few examples of successes, and then wrap it up.
Going negative. Interviewers are opening the door for you to share accomplishments and achievements. While you don’t want to boast, being overly modest and saying you do not consider yourself successful is unlikely to do you any favors.
Possible Follow-Up Questions
Key Takeaways
PREPARE BEFOREHAND. Even if you haven’t planned an answer to this specific interview question, having a good sense of what interviewers are looking for in candidates will help you give a more successful response.
GIVE EXAMPLES. Share specific examples of accomplishments that have helped your previous companies flourish.
BE RELEVANT. Pinpoint ways that you’ve been successful in the past that connect to the role at hand.
Do you consider yourself a good person?
Why ethics and integrity may only take you so far
I recently had an… ahem…discussion…with a friend. Like any good discussion between two individuals, there was some attitude, some unnecessarily negative tone, plenty of shame and blame, and, ultimately, a finding of common understanding and reluctant reconciliation.
This experience reminded me of the need to “fight right” when engaging in crucial conversations. Even more importantly, it made me consider how my own overarching self-conceptualization and worldview, particularly my personal ethics and sense of integrity, play into how I fight when I find myself in disagreement with others or their actions.
Zooming out, my sense of self influences every interaction I have with other human beings every day — begging the questions:
Ethics and Integrity within the context of being raised by Fundamentalist Christians
Ethics concerns itself with resolving questions of human morality by defining concepts such as good and evil, right and wrong, virtue and vice, justice and crime.
I was raised by fundamentalist Christians with a rather narrow definition of right and wrong. Good and evil was a black and white matter with very little room for interpretation, and there was no doubt that you always wanted to find yourself on the good or right side of things.
To be fundamentally good was always a deep value, instilled from childhood. Moral goodness or ethical truth was defined concretely, and in relation to a wrathful higher power who punished evil, unethical conduct.
As I grew up, I came to adopt a rather fixed mindset about a lot of things, including questions of moral philosophy: how I understood these concepts, and how I conducted myself, and judged others in relation to them.
Interestingly, despite the fact that I now consider myself an atheist and in many ways have worked to embrace a growth mindset, I still find that in some of the most foundational ways, I continue to operate from a fixed perspective of what is good or bad, right or wrong, ethical or unethical. While in some ways this helps me go through life with integrity, I would suggest that it often operates as more of a handicap than an asset.
Ethics and Personal Integrity as a Handicap
Over the years, when I have had arguments, I’ve noticed a personal tendency toward self-righteousness. I tend towards feeling morally superior, something that is probably derived from that fixed sense that my beliefs, actions, or affiliations are of greater virtue than those of the average person.
This is obviously not ideal for many reasons — first of all, nobody likes to be around somebody who obviously thinks themselves better than everybody else in the room; furthermore, self-righteous individuals are often intolerant of the opinions and behaviors of others.
I often experience disappointment in myself or others because of misplaced high moral expectations, both personally and professionally. This disappointment has led me to conclude that personal ethics and integrity can actually be more of a hiccup than a help on the journey to form meaningful and loving relationships.
Professionally, I tend to value my own contributions and efforts more highly than those of others, believing that they are somehow of greater importance or reflect superiority. I also tend to judge others’ contributions rather harshly, failing to appreciate their perspective and hard work. While this could result in simply holding myself and others to a high standard in my work (operating with integrity), it also can also lead to the fundamental attribution error or actor-observer bias.
Research shows, over and over, that cultivating healthy relationships is the most important factor contributing to happiness and fulfillment in life. So, if clinging to my own brand of personal ethics damages meaningful personal or professional relationships, perhaps, counterintuitively, it’s time to let go of the idea that I am a fundamentally good person?
So what’s the alternative?
As in most things, the cure for a fixed mindset is to practice ways of thinking and behaving that encourage a growth mindset instead. This is difficult in educational contexts like the classroom, and I suspect may be even more challenging in personal situations.
Culturally, in America we tend to really push people to be the best. Individualism is a cultural value and this can accidentally cause a lot of selfishness as we put on blinders to get ahead while leaving others in the dust.
So, what if we flipped conventional personal ethics on its head? What if, instead of considering ourselves to be morally superior and then accidentally treading others poorly, we thought less of ourselves and more of others?
Currently my mental model goes something like:
“I am a fundamentally good person and that means everything I do has a high level of personal ethics/integrity and goodness poured into it. I expect this of myself AND of others.”
This is kind of recipe for disaster, or at least constant disappointment. Not only do I often behave badly and disappoint myself; others can almost never meet my sky-high expectations. I have been told this directly by colleagues and well-meaning friends and family. It may even have contributed to some of my difficulty finding contentment as a classroom teacher — while high expectations for student learning are important, can you imagine what it would feel like to never live up to all your teacher expected of you?
What if, instead, I switched my internal monologue to be something like this:
“I’m kind of a meat bag — I’m wired to be selfish and put my own interests first, because that’s simply part of the human condition. I acknowledge this, because in owning my selfishness, I can forgive my own shortcomings AND those of others, which are also natural parts of being human. Furthermore, I commit to taking the goodness I used to mis-apply to my CHARACTER and put it into my ACTIONS towards others instead.”
Of course, you don’t want an admission that you are an inherently flawed human to be a gateway to giving yourself permission to behave badly. Hence the “furthermore’ part of the equation. BOTH parts are essential:
So, do you consider yourself a good person?
What if your answer was “no”?
I’m going to try to not consider myself inherently good anymore.
Because I’m not! I’m selfish and I fail and most things, and I definitely need forgiveness, flexibility, and patience from those around me for my shortcomings every single day. It’s a relief to admit this and own it.
Essentially, taking personal ethics out of the subjective realm of how you define your character and instead pouring your ethics into the concrete world of your observable actions is the goal.
At the end of the day, who really cares what you think of yourself? Turns out, only you do. Everyone else is busy thinking of what they think of themselves.
Do you consider yourself successful? Sample interview answers
What does it mean to be successful? Having a lot of money, nice car, and a big house? Or perhaps doing a job you always wanted to have? Does it mean being your own boss, and having plenty of time for your family and hobbies? Does the journey matter more, or the final destination? And, don’t people who consider themselves successful lose their drive and motivation, and actually start to stagnate?
Lot of questions, and no easy answers. Someone smart once said that success is a progressive realization of a worthy ideal. It’s a good definition, but not everyone can pursue worthy ideal in life, at least not in every stage of it. At times we basically try to survive, or earn money to pay bills and to have something to eat.
But I do not want to philosophize here for hours–though it would be possible with a strange interview question like this one. Let me rather show you 7 interesting sample answers to it. We will philosophize a bit more below the answers :).
7 sample answers to “Do you consider yourself successful?” interview question
Try to stay positive, regardless of circumstances
Maybe you do not consider yourself successful at the moment, and perhaps you’ve been going through a tough period right now–whether in your personal, or professional life.
It is all right to say it in an interview, as long as you remain positive about the future. Surely, things have been miserable, and maybe this job is your last chance. But you see the light at the end of the tunnel, and know that things can change to better at any moment.
Man can be destroyed, but not defeated. Try to stay positive, regardless of what happens in your life right now. Companies do not have a problem with hiring people who struggle, or people who aren’t successful. But nobody likes to hire someone who will bring a negative energy to the workplace.
* Special Tip: Do you consider yourself successful isn’t the only difficult question you will face while interviewing for any decent job. You will face questions about prioritization, dealing with pressure, dealing with ambiguity, and other tricky scenarios that happen in the workplace. If you want to make sure that you stand out with your answers and outclass your competitors, have a look at our Interview Success Package. Up to 10 premium answers to 31 tricky scenario based questions (+ more) will help you streamline your interview preparation, and eventually outclass your competitors and get the job. Not everyone has to strive for success
You shouldn’t be afraid to be philosophical in your interview answers, especially when they ask you philosophical questions. Perhaps you do not care about being successful, and try to live in a present moment, not dreaming about some goals in the future. See sample answers no. 6 as a good demonstration of this philosophy.
Or you have empathy with the poor, and understand that more than anything else, you were lucky in life–to be born in a good country, to receive education, to get a chance to dream, and to apply for good jobs. Hence you do not like to talk about success and failure–such concepts are highly abstract to you. Check answer no. 4 in our list for a demonstration of this attitude.
Another option is referring to problems you had to overcome in your personal life. Maybe you haven’t done anything great in your professional field yet, and there’s nothing to admire on your resume. But you’ve been through a lot in life, and the mere fact that you managed to stay sane and graduate in such conditions makes you successful–at least in your eyes, and you do not care what the other think. See sample answer no. 2 for your inspiration.
Too early to tell
You can also feel like it’s too early to judge your life, and whether you succeeded in your endeavors. This answer makes sense especially when you are young, and are just starting your professional career. See sample answer no. 3 as a good example of this perspective on life.
This way of thinking actually helps a lot in your early years. Because we live in a world that expects a lot from us, and many people feel as a failure before they really had a chance to prove their skills.
Once you dash the notions of success and failure and simply focus on your job, trying your best, without thinking too much if someone else is doing better, or if you wouldn’t be happier doing something else in your life, you will find it easier to deal with the expectations and to enjoy your life in work…
