АРТИКЛЬ (THE ARTICLE)
В англійській мові перед обчислювальними іменниками вживається особливе службове слово — артикль. В реченні він завжди ненаголошений.
Артикль може бути неозначений (Indefinite) та означений (the Definite).
Неозначений артикль походить від староанглійського числівника an — «один» і тому вживається перед обчислюваними іменниками в однині. Перед іменниками, що починаються з приголосного вживається форма а, а перед іменниками, що починаються з голосного — an: an apple,an airport, a table, a car.
Неозначений артикль вживається:
1) з обчислювальними іменниками, про які мова йде вперше:
This is a pen. (Це — ручка).
2) з назвами професій:
I’am a teacher. (Я — вчитель).
3) з деякими словосполученнями кількості:
a pair of gloves (пара рукавичок)
4) в окличних реченнях із словом What та наступним обчислюва-льним іменником:
What a pity! (Яка прикрість!)
Означений артикль походить від вказівного займенника that (той) і вживається перед необчислювальними іменниками та обчислювальними іменниками в однині і у множині. В залежності від того, з якої букви починається слово, він вимовляється: перед голосною the [зі]: the apple, the airforces. перед приголосною the [зэ]: the pen, the man, the game.
Означений артикль вживається:
1) з необчислювальними та обчислювальними іменниками в однині та множині, коли мова йде про речі, вже відомі тим, хто про них говорить:
We have a cat and a dog. (У нас є кіт та собака).
The cat is black, and the dog is yellow. (Кіт — чорний, а собака — жовтий);
2) перед назвами морів, річок, готелів, пабів, театрів, музеїв, газет:

1. Неозначений артикль а/ an.
Неозначений артикль вживається тільки з іменниками в однині.
Артикльа/ an вживається:
• якщо про предмет говориться вперше: It is a pen. — перед приголосним. It is an apple. — перед голосним;
• у значенні “один із, будь-який”: Give me a pen. — Дайте мені будь-яку ручку. (Я не маю жодної і згоден узяти ту, яку мені запропонують);
• з іменником — іменною частиною складеного присудка: My father is a doctor;
• з іменником після звороту there is: There is a pen on the table;
• з додатком після дієслова have / has: I have a sister;
• після слова what в окличних реченнях: What a beautiful day!
• у значенні числівника one (один) перед числівниками: a hundred (одна сотня), a thousand (одна тисяча), a million (один мільйон), a dozen (одна дюжина);
• з іменниками у значенні one (один): An apple a day keeps the doctor away. (Одне яблуко в день — і лікаря не потрібно).
Артикль а / an не вживається:
• перед іменами, прізвищами, назвами країн, міст, континентів:
I see Kate (Я бачу Катю); Kyiv is a city (Київ — велике місто);
• якщо перед іменником стоїть присвійний (my, his, her_______) або вказівний (this / that) займенник: It is a pen. (Це — ручка). It is my pen. (Це моя ручка). This pen is on the table. (Ця ручка на столі).
Неозначений артикль вживається також у ряді словосполучень:
