Bad, sad or trying hard to behave, Britney Spears can still attract an audience. The question on Monday night was which audience. And it’s enlightening to see exactly where this falling pop star fits on television’s implacable scale of celebrity redemption.

Her small guest appearance on the CBS show “How I Met Your Mother” was a boon for the network: her presence gave the sitcom its highest ratings of the year. But that doesn’t mean that Ms. Spears is well again and on her way back to former glory.

It could have been worse, because there are far lower rungs in show business. Ms. Spears did not have to be hazed on a cable reality show like “The Surreal Life,” or appear dazed on “Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew.” CBS gave her the part of a receptionist on a moderately successful network sitcom, though she was not the episode’s top-rated guest star and had to accept second billing to Sarah Chalke, a star of “Scrubs” on NBC.

The very fact that she could recite her lines was a relief: the most lasting television image of Ms. Spears in recent months showed her tied down to a stretcher.

But the most promising comeback platforms for the tarnished or forgotten are network reality competitions like ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars.” That series (and its many imitations) gives full vent to the highs and lows of show business; each dance number is a balletic metaphor for disgrace, punishing exertion and forgiveness. Priscilla Presley and Monica Seles are resurrecting their celebrity this season; last year Heather Mills, who was then seeking a huge divorce settlement from Paul McCartney and at the height of her unpopularity, danced with a prosthetic leg and managed to win over American audiences — for a while.

Network sitcoms are not quite as useful; a cameo appearance can gin up ratings and stir up attention, but not necessarily restore favor. Ms. Spears showed that for a few minutes she can play someone else. But she was not entrusted with an opportunity to show she is herself again.

“How I Met Your Mother” did not signal that Britney Spears is back. At best, she is on furlough.

How I Met Your Mother: Why Britney Spears’ Abby Was Important

Britney Spears role as Abby on How I Met Your Mother was pretty important. In fact, without Abby one of the show’s best couples may have never been.

Abby may have only been in a few episodes of How I Met Your Mother but she played an important role in the relationship evolution of two main characters. Princess of Pop Britney Spears’ turn as the slightly unhinged Abby on How I Met Your Mother was one of the show’s more memorable guest appearances, and was the singer’s first acting gig since a cameo on Will & Grace a couple of years earlier.

Abby was introduced during the third season of How I Met Your Mother in the episode “Ten Sessions,” as the receptionist at the dermatology clinic owned by Ted Mosby’s future runaway bride Stella Zinman. Over the course of the ten sessions it took Stella to remove Ted’s butterfly tattoo, Abby developed a massive crush on Ted. Unfortunately, Abby’s romantic overtures went over Ted’s head due to his own crush on Stella, and after meeting Barney Stinson she became yet another notch on Barney’s crowded bedpost.

That was neither here nor there, however. Rather, it was what happened during Barney’s mission to discover the identity of the mystery woman in “The Bracket” that made Abby so important. In this How I Met Your Mother episode, Robin Scherbatsky helps Barney by pretending to be someone he’s hitting on in an attempt to snare the mystery woman and find out who she is. While Barney and Robin are pretending to flirt with each other she asks him what he says to women to get them to sleep with him. Barney whispers those magic words in Robin’s ear and notes she’s a little turned on by it which seems to be the case despite Robin’s protests.

Not so coincidentally, Barney and Robin slept with each other for the first time a couple of episodes later. Considering the role Abby played in Barney and Robin’s supposedly faux flirtation in “The Bracket,” it’s arguable she was the impetus behind them getting together. Although it took Barney and Robin a while to make it official, in a roundabout way Abby brought them together and thus gave How I Met Your Mother one of its best couples.

Over the course of How I Met Your Mother‘s nine seasons, a number of big-name celebrities made guest appearances. One of the most memorable celebrity cameos came in the form of Britney Spears during the sitcom’s third season. Here’s the story behind Spears’ cameo and how it benefited the CBS series.

Award-winning pop singer Britney Spears first appeared in the How I Met Your Mother episode, «Ten Sessions.» Spears played the role of Abby, the receptionist at Stella Zinman’s (Sarah Chalke) dermatology clinic. Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) went to Stella’s office for ten sessions to get a tattoo removed. Abby was instantly attracted to Ted and tried to get his attention as the sessions went on. Even though she dressed to impress and dropped numerous hints regarding her crush, Ted never caught on. Abby ended up spending the night with Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris), but she was upset that he never called her after their romantic fling. She then made it her mission to warn women about Barney’s behavior before he had a chance to seduce them.

Prior to her appearance on How I Met Your Mother, the pop icon had acted in the feature film, Crossroads, and cameoed on Will & Grace. Spears was a fan of How I Met Your Mother, so she had her team contact the show’s co-creators, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. Some of the cast members were hesitant about a big name making a cameo, since they feared the series would look like they were relying on celebrities to bring in ratings. Bays and Thomas later agreed to have a cameo by Spears and they considered her for the role of Stella. The creative team then decided to develop another role for the singer and planned to have Alicia Silverstone portray Stella. Silverstone later dropped out, believing her role would be overlooked with Spears’ involvement. Either way, Spears exceeded expectations with her performance as Abby.

Britney Spears’ Cameo Boosted How I Met Your Mother’s Ratings

The cast and crew of How I Met Your Mother were instantly impressed with Spears’ comedic acting. She supposedly had everyone laughing on set and improvised a few of her lines during the episode. Spears was also said to have impeccable comic timing, leading to her scene-stealing performance. The sitcom loved her cameo so much, they asked her to reprise her role a few episodes later in the episode «Everything Must Go.» Barney finally figured out that she was the «mystery woman» sabotaging his one-night stands. To make Ted jealous, Barney and Abby pretended to be in a serious relationship. At one point, he even proposed Abby in front of Ted and she thought it was legitimate.

Spears’ appearance in How I Met Your Mother ultimately worked out for all involved. The singer’s first appearance awarded the series with a major bump in ratings. The creators credited her at keeping the sitcom alive since they believed Spears helped put them on the map. The cameo also gave Spears the opportunity to get back into the entertainment world since it was her first major project after taking a multi-year hiatus.

How I Met Your Mother may have featured plenty of big-name celebrity cameos, but an appearance by Britney Spears was apparently a bridge too far for Neil Patrick Harris. Beginning in 2005, How I Met Your Mother started life as a hangout sitcom with a difference. Unlike the superficially similar Friends or New Girl, instead How I Met Your Mother had a narrator recounting the events of every episode from far in the future.

This set-up let How I Met Your Mother exploit the unreliable memory, self-serving retelling, or general idiosyncrasies of its narrator Future Ted as he told his kids of his misadventures throughout his 30s. The clever set-up was utilized more frequently in the show’s early seasons, with How I Met Your Mother gradually becoming a more conventional sitcom as the series gained fame. As the cult hit began to gain worldwide mainstream popularity, How I Met Your Mother featured several increasingly impressive guest stars with each passing season.

Among the notable names that cropped up on the show’s cast list were Lucy Hale, Kyle MacLachlan, Bryan Cranston, Katie Holmes, and eventually even pop music royalty in the form of Nicole Scherzinger, Katy Perry and Britney Spears. However, series star Neil Patrick Harris voiced an objection to Spears’ role, fearing How I Met Your Mother may have become too reliant on big-name guests over quality writing.

Notably, Spears’ comedic role on How I Met Your Mother was well-received by viewers and critics alike, unlike numerous later guest stars such as Tim Gunn (who cropped up in HIMYM’s worst episode, ‘Sunrise’) who reviewers felt served no narrative purpose.
