Yorke says this is about being in love with someone, but not feeling good enough. He describes the feeling as, “There’s the beautiful people and then there’s the rest of us.”
This song has a lot of feelings and I think that is one of the main reason why I love this song the very first time I heard it. I specially love the bridge part of the song, the one where the lead singer screams his heart out! Full of emotions!
How to Play Creep
Distinct sound of sliding from G note (6th string) to the 7th fret is the important part of the song. Although the song only has 4 chords, it is important that you do that slide.
The chords that the whole song uses are Gmajor, B major, C major and C minor (Cm).
Stay in the chord shape and do the picking of each required note.
All root in the E string. They all have the same bar chord shape.
There are 2 ways you can play this song. If you are playing along (for pleasure using an acoustic guitar), you can get away with just plain old 4/4 strumming of those 4 chords.
Get the strumming right with feeling and when you mix it up with your superb singing, I guarantee enjoyment of 200%.
If you are learning this song with a complete rock band, better to study the main guitar riff of the song. The main guitar riff is the one you hear on the intro. That same riff and plucking/picking pattern is also the one used in the verses.
Here’s how you play it:
Each chord will start with the root not in the E string. You arpeggiate the first 3 notes downward. That’s up to the D string.
You then go back and do the same for the next 3 string, this time starting in the A string (D note). You then arpegiate upward starting at the B string. The last note for the first bar is the G on the octave note found in the D string.
The next chord is B major. You may do the same pattern as in G major. Same goes for C major and Cminor but with a little variation.

Here is the chord progression for the Verse:
At the end you see a repetition sign. So, this chord progression loop is repeated twice. Therefore, instead of 8 bars, the Verse consists of 16 bars. Below you can see what the Verse looks like without the repetition sign.

Note charts for the Intro section of ‘Creep’ by Radiohead
In this section, we’ll challenge you to play the guitar intro of “Creep” on the piano by providing you with the note charts. This is also a great exercise to develop the coordination of your left and right hand. Don’t be surprised, the charts are in the bass clef!
How to practice the Intro of ‘Creep’ on piano
Practice it slowly. Play two bars of each chord separately and try to combine both your hands. In our explanatory video, we’re showing you an example of playing this intro with both hands.
So, start playing only the 1st and the 2nd bar of the G chord, then move to the 3rd and 4th bar of the B/F# chord. Then try to connect these chords together by playing the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th bars in a row. Do it as slowly as you feel comfortable with, gradually raising the speed to the original tempo.
Music theory behind ‘Creep’
As we already mentioned, “Creep” has four chords. These chords create a loop, which is repeated over and over again during the whole song. The big question is: How does it still sound fresh and interesting? Besides the fact that this song has great instrumentation, we’ll take a look at why these chords work so well together.
The chord progression:
G – is the I (tonic) chord of the song. Check out our music dictionary to get a better understanding of what a tonic is, and what it does within a chord progression.
C – is the IV chord.
The B is the chord of the III degree of G major. Usually on the III degree of major scales we have a minor chord. However, in this particular song we have a B major chord, which can be considered as a secondary dominant – the dominant chord moving to an Em chord (VI degree of G). But this secondary dominant (B) doesn’t resolve to Em, it moves to a C chord. You don’t have to be schooled in music theory to feel the difference when you hear this. Emotionally you are longing for the Em, but you get the C chord instead.
At the end of the chord progression, the C (IV chord of the G major) turns into a C minor chord, which is resolved back to the G chord. This cadence of IV – IV minor – I chord is known as a minor plagal cadence. And as you have noticed already, it sounds amazing.
Trivia – Why Radiohead hates ‘Creep’
“Creep” by Radiohead tells the story of a person that is in love. The protagonist follows his love around, but fails to make his passion explicit. Then something weird happens in the lyrics: the protagonist subconsciously becomes his beloved one.
“Fuck off, we’re tired of it”
To actually assert yourself in a masculine way without looking like you’re in a hard-rock band is a very difficult thing to do… It comes back to the music we write, which is not effeminate, but it’s not brutal in its arrogance. It is one of the things I’m always trying: To assert a sexual persona and on the other hand trying desperately to negate it.”
So far, so good, what could possibly go wrong? The track became an underground hit in the UK and the United States. The only problem was that Radiohead subconsciously became “Creep”, just like the protagonist in the story, and that bothered the group. It bothered them so much that after a while they refused to play it live. Thom Yorke even yelled at the audience of Montreal during a gig when they were begging him to play “Creep”: “Fuck off, we’re tired of it.”
Anthem
The anthem that made the band big had transformed into a monster that demanded to be fed, and Radiohead resisted. The resistance also grew among the “real” fans in the ‘90s, which created the ultimate test. If you are ever asked what your favorite Radiohead song is, and you answer “Creep”, then you’re a phony.
Now, almost thirty years after this awesome track was written, we can say only one thing: wow, it really has contributed a lot to the curriculum of modern rock music, and it would be a shame if we didn’t jam along. If Radiohead won’t do it, it’s up to you.
Creep Chords
Learn how to play the song Creep by Radiohead.
Creep Chords
The song Creep by Radiohead is a pretty simple chord structure. The chords for it are G, B, C, and C minor. You can watch the video or read on below to learn how to form the Creep chords.
Creep Chords By Radiohead
To form the G chord simply use your middle finger to press down on the second fret of the A string. Follow that with your ring finger on the third fret of the low E string. Then press your pinky on the third fret of the high E string. Strum all six chords and you got the open G chord. However you can also form a barred G chord which I believe is how Creep is played. This is a E shaped chord brought to the third fret. So to form the barred G chord form an E chord but bring it up three frets. That way your index finger is covering the entire third fret and your middle finger is on the fourth fret of the G string with your ring finger and pinky on the fifth frets of the A and D strings.
Then you got the barred B chord. To form this you will barre the seventh fret. Then have the same E shape. So press your middle finger down on the G string of the eighth fret. Then press your ring finger on the ninth fret of the A string and use your pinky to press down on the D string of the ninth fret.
Then simply move that barred chord up one fret and you got your barred C chord. Then to form the last chord in the structure, a C minor, you just take your middle finger off so you are fretting the entire eighth fret and pressing on the A and D strings with your ring and pinky fingers. Here are the chord charts so you know what I mean.
How to Learn Guitar
So the thing is that in the beginning you will want to learn easy guitar songs like Creep by Radiohead by looking up the chords and tabs.
But then you will want to learn how to play guitar songs with your ears. By listening to tunes and coming up with the chords and notes on your own is really the way to go.
In the beginning it will be pretty difficult which is why I recommend learning the basics like the chords, theory, scales, and solos.
But what you are really ramping up to is playing songs with a sense of rhythm and feeling. Look at the greats. You think they are really good musicians because they sit around and look up guitar tabs for pop songs all day?
You need to be more than just a guitar player. You got to be a musician and develop a feel for music. The guitar is just an instrument that allows you to speak the language of music.
Yes you can still learn with these songs with simple chords but then you will want to expand your outlook on the world of music.
