the english like what they call «good plain food». usually they like steak, roast beef, yorkshire pudding, and fish and chips.

dinner is the most substantial meal of the whole day. it is usually eaten at 7 o’clock.

the first course may be soup (though the english don’t like it very much).

the main course will often be fish or meat, perhaps the traditional roast beef of old england, and a lot of vegetables.

the, next course will be something sweet and often baked, such as a fruit pie. last of all there may be cheese, often with biscuits.

it is common knowledge that the english are very fond of tea. they like to have «a nice cup of tea» 6 or 8 times a day, sometimes even more.

1. a) Read the letter and fill in: — Прочитайте письмо и вставьте фразы:

Thank you for writing to me about your problem. I was sorry to hear that you are unhappy at your new school because you don’t know anyone there. I have some advice on how to make new friends.

The first thing 1) you shoul do is try to become part of the new school. For example, 2) how about joining the drama club? This way, you show people you really want to be a part of things.

3) Another suggestion is to invite a few of your classmates to study with you. 4) It’s better than studying alone and, by doing this, you will get to know people better.

I hope you find my advice useful. Don’t forget, it’s up to you to make things happen. 5) Let me know how things go. I think that you will soon have lots of new friends.

Best wishes, Paula.

…you’re older than I am and maybe you can help me with my problem. I get very stressed before my school exams. I can’t sleep at night, and I feel tired all the time. What should I do? — …

4. Match each piece of advice to its reason. —

5. Write a letter advice to Diana. Use the plan below and the letter in Ex.1 as a model. —

Thank you for writing to me about your problem. I am sorry to hear that you get very stressed before my school exams. I have some advice about how you can improve things.

First of all you should do is try to increase your confidence. The lack of confidence is usual problem of all students befor exams. Learn to face the exams, despite your fear for a possible failure! If you are sure that you know all subject issues, you’ll feel less stressed about exams. What you need to do. Take care for your good preparation. You can create a schedule and organize your time. Try to do your exam revisions with your friends. It’s always better to test your knowledge with friends. Meet with them and ask each other questions. Try to explain to your friends what you have understood from studying, if you can explain to others, then you have understood!

Another advice is try to get more sleep. I know you have problems with it. But you should try to do it. Relax your mind, avoid drinks with caffeine and stay away from bright lights before you go to bed. Open your window and air the room well. And remember to be more confident! This will help both your body and mind work better!

I hope you find my advice useful. Don’t forget it’s up to you to make things happen. Let me know how things go. I think that you will soon calm down.

All the best, Lena
