While on holiday in Egypt in 2013, when I heard that you could swim with dolphins in Sharm el Sheikh I leapt at the chance. This was a long-held dream of mine and I was over the moon. It was a spur of the moment decision that I now regret. I’ve since researched the facts and spoken to experts. Here’s what you should know before you decide whether or not to go swimming with dolphins.

With thanks to Mark Lee for the fabulous dolphin image featured above.

Why I regret swimming with dolphins

Before we had left England I had looked at what excursions were available and for other ideas of things to do in Egypt but I had not come across swimming with dolphins as an option. I had heard of dolphin enclosures that are connected to the sea where people can swim with the dolphins. In this case, the dolphins are free to come and go as they please. I was under the impression that this was the type of encounter I would experience.

Having paid up (a lot!) it occurred to me that I should make sure. When I checked, I found out that they would be captive dolphins. I was told not to worry as they had been born in captivity, as if that made it alright!

I was now in two minds. Should I go as planned, then write about the experience and, more importantly, see what I could find out about the ethics of swimming with dolphins and share my findings. Alternatively, should I simply not go?

What is it like to go swimming with dolphins in captivity?

When I arrived at the pool it felt so very wrong to see the dolphins in captivity and in such a small pool. Again I questioned my morals and whether I should simply walk away. In the end, I decided to go ahead. The dolphins’ ‘owners’ already had my money and would hardly care if I walked out. Plus at the very least I could share the experience with you and leave you to make up your own minds as I’m sure many of you share my dream of swimming with dolphins.

above: Me being ‘kissed’ by two dolphins, not the close encounter I had hoped for.

Irrelevant of the morals, the experience itself was a letdown and nothing much more than a photo-shoot, as each person took it, in turn, to pose with the dolphins in one way then another. Neill had paid £10 just to come along to watch and to video it. While he was allowed to take photographs, videos were not allowed. Also, spectators were not able to walk around the pool to the side where we would be. This was so that the dolphinarium could try to sell us their outrageously priced photographs and video.

I did not enjoy the experience at all and was left feeling sad and guilty.

The facts about swimming with dolphins

Since coming back from Egypt, I’ve contacted a number of organisations and here is my interpretation of the information given to me, principally by Laura from the International Marine Mammal Project, Earth Island Institute.

Why is it cruel to keep dolphins in captivity?

Dolphins are known to be highly intelligent, self-aware animals with strong family bonds, just like you or I.

Dolphins in the wild do not jump through hoops, eat dead fish, wave, kiss or drag people through the water as they hold onto their fins. Captive dolphins are kept hungry as part of their training and to ensure they perform. Without routine starvation, the dolphins would not perform.

Wild dolphins constantly travel, covering thousands of miles every year experiencing a wide diversity of natural habitat and the freedom to deep dive. Can you imagine what it must be like to be confined to a small, unnatural pool, where you are forced to go endlessly round in circles?

Is it safe to swim with dolphins?

The pools where these types of encounters are held are generally not very big. The dolphins are excreting into the water you are swimming in and diseases can be transmitted between humans and dolphins so it’s not a healthy situation for either of us.

Did you know? Orcas or as they are often called, killer whales, aren’t whales at all. Orcas are actually dolphins. The largest dolphins there are.

It is equally inhumane to keep orcas in captivity and over the years a number of trainers have been killed, the most recent in 2010 in Sea World Orlando when their most experienced trainer, Dawn Brancheau, was killed following a “Dine with Shamu” show as reported by the BBC. The 2013 film Black Fish is a very moving and eye-opening account of events leading up to Dawn’s death. For more information please visit Keep Whales Wild.

Capturing dolphins from the wild

Most dolphins held in captivity were captured from the wild.

Dolphins live in highly complex, close-knit social units, known as pods. The capturing of dolphins isn’t just extremely stressful for the individual taken, it deeply affects the whole pod. Can you imagine what it must be like to have a member of your family kidnapped?

Worse still in the process of capturing a dolphin the entire pod maybe killed. In Taiji, Japan, when a few dolphins in a pod are selected for captivity the whole pod is driven a shore and the majority are inhumanely killed. Thousands are killed in this way each year.

If tourists, like myself (guilty as charged) stopped going to these facilities, then this inhumane treatment of dolphins would stop.

Swimming with dolphins in the wild

Not long after I returned from Egypt, I came across a book ‘Swimming with Dolphins, Tracking Gorillas – How to have the world’s best wildlife encounters‘ and immediately bought a copy.

It’s packed with advice about how to have a great variety of wildlife encounters without harming the animals or their environment. Ian recommends a number of ethical companies that offer dolphin swims in the wild, one of which is Dolphin Swims in Egypt.

“The only sound is the hypnotic chant of our engine as we chug out to sea. Then to the left comes a splash. A dolphin! They’re surfing in our wake now, playing, squeaking. We cut the engine and I slip overboard as quietly as possible, surrounded by whistles and clicks. Suddenly there they are, emerging from the blue, six, no seven, heading straight towards me. A mother and calf encircle, clicking, smiling round and round… Then it’s over and I watch them fade back into the deep.” Amanda Stafford, Dolphin Swims (Egypt, Red Sea)

Surely that is how an encounter should be. But even swimming with dolphins in the wild isn’t always an ethical encounter. Some tour operators will chase the dolphins in order to give the tourists that elusive encounter. A responsible operator will limit the number of boats visiting a pod of dolphins, give the dolphins enough space to take the lead and would never allow you to touch a dolphin. Some people believe that even this is too much and that the only way to responsibly observe dolphins and whales is from dry land.

Qualifying as a responsible whale and dolphin watching guide

2018 update: Since writing this article in 2013, I have learnt a lot about responsible animal encounters. I’ve been grizzly bear and black bear, as well as whale watching several times in Canada. In the summer of 2018, I qualified as a responsible whale watching guide with the World Cetacean Alliance. The WCA is a fabulous global collective raising awareness amongst the public and whale and dolphin watching businesses around the world, as well as offering training and developing a set of global ethical guidelines. They also have an excellent free app to help you find responsible whale or dolphin watching experiences around the world. Just search for the World Cetacean Alliance in the app store.

Swimming with dolphins in virtual reality to aid disabled

Swimming with wild dolphins is something most can only dream of, and jumping into pools with captive animals has become increasingly controversial with environmentalists condemning it as cruel.

But a Dutch non-profit believes it has found a way to bring people, especially the disabled, closer to such a joyful experience through the technological, immersive advances offered by virtual reality (VR).

The Dolphin Swim Club is the realisation of a more than two-decade journey by artist Marijke Sjollema, who had her first chance encounter with a dolphin in 1993 while snorkeling off the coast of Mexico.

«I saw this grey shadow under the water and my first thought was this is the end. I thought it was a shark,» she told AFP.

She tried to stay calm «but this shadow was following me. And then there was this split second that I realised that it wasn’t a shark. It was a dolphin.»

«I didn’t know anything about dolphins, but I instinctively knew, ‘Oh a dolphin, I’m fine. This is a good thing’.»

From that moment on, Sjollema’s love of dolphins and all cetaceans was born.

«We know that there is something magical about dolphins. We think of joy, and playfulness and happiness and innocence when we meet dolphins. And this is even a healing quality,» she told AFP.

She and her business consultant husband, Benno Brada, have devoted their spare time, energy and personal resources to their mission of enabling people to discover their own encounter with dolphins.

Their first project using normal VR headsets playing a film of the dolphins launched in late 2015.

But last month they went a step further, unveiling waterproof VR glasses, which allow people to drift around a pool watching bottlenose and spinner dolphins playing around them in virtual reality.

This VR dolphin therapy in a pool, still at the trial stage, is thought to be a world first.

«The dream was to find an alternative to dolphin-assisted therapies using dolphins in captivity,» Brada told therapists at a residential community for disabled people run by the ‘s Heeren Loo organisation who were testing out the waterproof goggles in the pool.

The centre has been using the land version of the VR glasses since 2016, and has seen noticeable benefits.

«Some 82 percent of our clients feel actually relaxed by seeing the films,» said the organisation’s policy advisor Johan Elbers.

«It takes them away from the world they are in, they enter a new world in another mindset, think differently, feel differently, see differently, and relax completely.»

He recalled how one young woman, who had long had trouble sleeping, now watches a VR film of the dolphins swimming at night, and falls quietly asleep.

Another man is able to completely forget an agonising pain in his arm.

Dion, a 21-year-old resident of the community, said watching the film made him feel «peaceful.»

«The dolphin noises and the water calms me down, that calms me from all the noises that there are, then you’re zen,» he said.

The pool-safe VR goggles, developed thanks to 50,000 euros ($59,000) grant from the Dutch government, consist of a waterproof Samsung smartphone in a waterproof backing mounted on a special 3D-printed rig made of recycled plastics.

«Stress is very important as a driver of all kinds of psychiatric problems,» explains psychiatrist Wim Veling, from the University of Groningen.

«So we are trying in therapy to make people more relaxed,» said Veling, who has been studying the use of VR to help people with mental health disorders.

«The power of virtual reality is in the immersion» into another world, he says on the Dolphin Swim Club site.

For Sjollema, the VR glasses offer huge advantages. Not only can they bring the dolphins to disabled people, who would not be able to travel to see them, but they also avoid the use of captive dolphins.

«Right from the beginning we wanted to make this an alternative for existing therapies with dolphins in captivity,» she said.

The films were made during a 10-day shoot in December 2015 at the Red Sea, by a specialist VR team Viemr, using free divers capable of holding their breath for up to five minutes so as not to scare away the dolphins.

The dry version glasses are already being used in more than 150 universities, hospitals and community centres around the world.

And the hope is that the waterproof ones will prove equally beneficial. Sjollema and Brada are looking for a partner to launch their commercial production.

But Dion is ready for something a little more exhilarating.

He would like to watch «a film with sharks» or lions «where the animal is hunting a prey. It would be fun to see a little bit of action.»

The perturbing truth behind the swim with dolphins

Swimming with dolphins is a popular and profitable activity in the Caribbean. Tourists on cruise ships leave their vessels to go swimming with the resident dolphins. While it seems like harmless fun, it’s not. The dolphins often pay dearly for people’s amusement.

According to one report, a dolphin’s enclosure would be less then one percent of their natural habitat range. They are also far too shallow. Dolphins frequently dive 60 feet; an enclosure might be 10 feet deep.

1. Captive dolphins are kept in pens that are much too small

The Shallow Water Interaction at Dolphin Cay lives down to its name, for the water is waist deep. It is plainly designed with humans rather than dolphins in mind, for the dolphins can’t dive at all, while the humans can stand comfortably in the water.

The Deep Water Swim at Dolphin Cay is deeper and visitors have to swim to properly interact with the dolphin. It is still much shallower than a dolphin’s natural habitat.

2. The pens aren’t always well-maintained

The keepers use lots of chorine to keep the pens clean. That chlorine can damage a dolphin’s eyes, and some dolphins swim around with their eyes closed, like Angel the albino dolphin in the above picture. Worse, the chlorine can damage their skin.

At the other extreme are dirty tanks like Misty’s that don’t have a filtration system and are full of algae and dead fish. Such unsanitary conditions are bad for the dolphin.

3. Captive dolphins can become stressed and even develop mental illness

Dolphins are highly intelligent and sensitive animals. Keeping them in small pens and forcing them to perform the same 10 tricks over and over can make them frustrated and aggressive. Frustrated, angry dolphins can become dangerous to humans. They can behave aggressively towards both trainers and visitors. The dolphin in the above picture is biting someone who apparently tried to pet it.

It’s possible that dolphins can even kill themselves. Dolphins do not breathe automatically, so each breath is a conscious effort. A suicidal dolphin can end their life simply by not taking the next breath. One of the dolphins who portrayed Flipper in the TV show of the same name died in this fashion.

4. Captive dolphins have physical health problems

While most captive animals live longer than do their wild counterparts, the reverse is true with dolphins. Wild dolphins can have a life expectancy comparable to that of a human, while captive dolphins tend to die before they’re 30 years old. Captive dolphins are fed frozen fish that don’t provide all of their nutritional needs. They are therefore routinely given ulcer medications and antibiotics — and they still die young. Dolphins are not scavengers and eat only live fish in the wild.

A stunt like this is dangerous to both dolphins and humans. If the woman falls off, she’ll hurt herself. If she lands on a dolphin, both could be injured.

5. Some captive dolphins are taken from the wild

Capturing wild dolphins involves chasing them into nets. They are then picked up and loaded into a boat. Female dolphins are considered more trainable and therefore more desirable.

The stress and trauma of being captured can be fatal to dolphins. Even worse, members of pods or families are separated from each other.

6. Captive-bred dolphins are losing their instincts

These dolphins have essentially beached themselves on command. In the wild, dolphins only beach themselves if they are in serious distress.

While tailwalking is a staple of dolphin shows, it is rarely seen in wild dolphins. Tailwalking is most commonly seen in energetic young female dolphins. Some of them learned tailwalking from dolphins that had been rehabilitated and released back into the wild.

7. Scientists learn more from studying wild populations than captive animals

In the wild, dolphins live in groups called pods. Like all social animals, they have methods of communicating that really can’t be observed in captive animals.

While some dolphins can and do give birth in captivity, they cannot raise their young the way wild dolphins would. For example, wild dolphins teach their young to hunt fish, while captive dolphins cannot hunt for themselves. Scientists who want to learn how dolphins teach their young how to hunt need to observe wild dolphins.

8. Captive dolphins don’t always receive good care

Dolphins can get sunburn, just like humans. In the wild, they can dive deep and escape the sun. Captive dolphins are often kept in enclosures that are too shallow for that.

Captive dolphins are kept in bare pools that have no hiding places or enrichment. The pools are sometimes so small that the dolphin’s sonar bounces off the walls and confuses the animal.

9. Transporting dolphins traumatizes them

There are two ways to transport an animal that lives in water: wet transit, which involves a tank, and dry transit, in which the animal is kept in a padded sling, and humans keep it cool and wet. Wet transit is used for smaller sea mammals, while dry transit is used for the larger ones. Sometimes, dolphins will actually be transported by plane. Regardless of the method, transporting dolphins or other cetaceans is so traumatic that many animals die while being transported.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES. has offers guidelines on transporting marine mammals — and those guidelines give clues to what can go wrong, as they emphasize that only healthy animals should be transported. They also refer to “sudden illness” and the necessity of keeping the dolphin cool.

10. Captive dolphin populations aren’t useful from a conservation standpoint

Most of the captive dolphins belong to species that aren’t endangered and already have stable populations. Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops. are the most commonly used genus because they look friendly and are easy to train. It is also one of the more common dolphins.

The spotted dolphin is popular with swim-with-dolphin programs, especially in the Bahamas. Spotted dolphins that are frequently exposed to people gradually lose their fear of them.
