How long is God of War 2018? Game director reveals HUGE leap in play length for new title

Settle in for a long slog, because the new God of War game is going to take you ages to finish

WORRIED that you’ll smash through the new God of War game in no time? It’s unlikely, according to the creators.

God of War 2018 director Cory Barlog has revealed exactly how long it takes to complete the game – and it’s pretty immense.

The game boss said that it took a Santa Monica Games designer 43 hours to get 100% completion on the upcoming game, speaking on the Kinda Funny Gamescast.

That’s a huge chunk of time, especially when you compare it to previous God of War games.

The How Long to Beat website tracks how long it takes players to finish games on average.

And the original God of War game from 2005 took just 12.5 hours to complete.

The sequel, God of War 2 (2007), took players roughly 13 hours to finish.

And then 2010’s God of War 3 was the biggest to date, taking 17 hours to finish.

That suggests that the new God of War reboot is more than twice as long as previous entries to the franchise.

If you’ve never played a God of War game, then this might help: the Call of Duty WW2 main story takes just 6.5 hours to complete.

And even if you do absolutely everything in the game, it’ll only take you 20.5 hours.

God of War is an upcoming hack-and-slash revamp of the 13-year-old franchise from Sony’s Santa Monica Studio.

It’s the first time that God of War has moved on from its traditional Greek mythology, adopting a new Norse setting instead.

Series protagonist Kratos stays on as the lead, but this time he’s paired up with his son, Atreus.

Looking at how much time you’ll be spending to play this masterpiece of a game.

The critically-acclaimed God of War game from 2018 just got a PC port through Steam after being a Playstation exclusive for years. It’s still seeing a lot of players even after being out for quite some time, especially now that it can be played on bigger resolutions and on a higher graphics fidelity.

If you haven’t played the game yet before for reasons or you’re just waiting for this port to happen (kudos to you), you may also want to know how much content is in store for you or how long it will take you to finish the game. For that, we got you covered.

How long does it take to finish the main story of God of War?

If you just focus on completing the main story quests and nothing else, it will take you roughly around 21 hours to complete the game. For a story-driven action adventure game, that is quite average and not too long enough that it becomes a drag.

The game itself got nominated and won a couple of awards from different award-giving bodies, so you can expect that your 20+ hours of quality gameplay will be well spent.

If you’re the kind of gamer who likes to learn more about the world and the story by completing the side-quests, expect another 12-20 more hours of gameplay on top of that. That’s more father and son bonding time, not bad.

How long does it take to fully complete God of War?

If you’re the completionist kind of player, completing God of War to 100% will take you around 50-80 hours. That’s with all the artifacts collected, all dig sites found, all dragons freed, and all of Odin’s Ravens killed, just to list a few of the objectives needed.

There are at least 300 different items and encounters that you’ll have to get in order to fulfill all of the objectives, so good hunting. Thankfully, none of the collectibles in this game is missable, so you can go through the story and just hunt for the collectibles that you need in free roam. Either by playing through the Playstation version or through the PC version, completing all the objectives will award your with the Father and Son trophy/achievement; a very nice and satisfying achievement to add to your collection.

Can you speedrun God of War?

Yes, you can speedrun God of War. Doing an any% run will take you around 5-6 hours with the fastest one at just below 4 hours, while a 100% may take around 10 hours, with the fastest one clocking in at just 9 and a half hours. If this is your thing, then we wish you godspeed.

We might even see lower results this time as some players report that aiming feels much better and easier to do with the mouse and keyboard setup.

Do I have to play the previous God of War games?

Since this game is actually a sequel to 2010’s God of War III, then yes, it’s in your best interests to play through the prequel games. Doing so will help get a better appreciation towards Kratos’ journey and you get to know more about the lore and the characters around him.

Then again, God of War is the kind of game that can stand on its own, so you’ll still be guaranteed to have a great time even if this is your first God of War game. Also, there’s more than enough time to play and complete the game before its sequel, God of War Ragnarök, comes out this year.

20 Hours to Beat the Main Story

When focusing mainly on the Main Quests from beginning to the end, it may take at least

20 Hours of gameplay to finish God of War.This includes the need to do smaller side activities that are required, such as finding new equipment or upgrading existing ones to better Level Up to match against some of the tougher foes that can be found later on in-game.

Sidequests and the Main Story Require

Sidequests, or Favors, are smaller quests that can be found by interacting with characters in-game. These side activities will see you travelling to new areas, sometimes forcing you into a fight against one of the Optional Bosses available.

Completing all Favors will add a conservative

10+ Hours to your playthrough, with more hours added if you wish to explore the new areas you venture into for better loot.

100% Playthrough Requires

50+ Hours of Gameplay

Collecting everything there is in the game as well as completing every activity possible, including the challenge realms of Muspelheim and Niflheim will take

This includes being able to play through the game once more on the New Game+ mode that you can unlock after beating the game once, with the playtime increasing in length depending on how long you take to beat the game on the first try.

Whether players are looking to stick to the story and nothing else or they want to find some collectibles, here are the average completion times for God of War.

God of War is finally out and PlayStation 4 players are diving headfirst into the game to see how Sony Santa Monica has evolved the character of Kratos. As those who have read our God of War review know, this latest adventure is filled to the brim with content, more than any other game in the series to date.

Given that, some gamers have questions about God of War’s length and how many hours of gameplay they can expect to get out of the game. For a game like this, that answer largely comes down to how invested players are in side quests.

Story Only

Those players that choose to stick to the critical path in God of War and want to play on an easier difficulty can get through the main story in about 25 hours. That means avoiding all of the side quests in the game and not venturing off to look for collectibles or better gear for Kratos.

Some Side Quests and Exploration

Players that want to get Kratos better prepared for tougher battles or who want to complete a few side quests can expect to get about 30 hours out of the game. There are some meaty side quests with worthwhile words packed throughout God of War and there are plenty of opportunities to venture off the beaten path.

100% Completion

Finally, completionists are looking at a full gameplay time of around 40 hours. There are a lot of collectibles in the game and a lot of activities to complete in order to get full rewards and unlock all of the game’s Trophies. This is more of a grind than just completing everything with a story tied to it, but given how positive reviews for God of War have been, most likely won’t mind a little extra time in the Norse world.

There is another way to get a little extra mileage but not all players will choose to follow the path. God of War’s ‘Give Me God of War’ difficulty is extremely brutal and challenging and will likely have players repeating enemy encounters over and over until they get the patterns down perfectly. Those that choose to play the game on the hardest difficulty will get more playtime out of the game, but it may be more frustration than entertainment.

Players looking to experience the God of War series in its entirety, before Ragnarok arrives on PS5, will need to be prepared for an undertaking.

In September of 2020, PlayStation fans were likely shocked and thrilled as Sony Santa Monica Studios announced that the next game in the classic God of War franchise would be coming in 2021. The studio ran a small teaser trailer showing the well-known omega logo with the phrase «Ragnarok is Coming» as the final announcement in the PS5 Showcase Event, giving players a compelling reason to purchase the new console.

While no further information has been provided for the new God of War game, there are likely many players that would be interested in catching up on the journey of Kratos in the lead up to this title. Though Ragnarok is technically the fifth mainline title in the series, there are actually seven games in total for those wanting to enjoy the full breadth of the Spartan’s trials and tribulations. Many could be wondering if a major time investment will be needed to enjoy the full God of War story. However, players will find that this mountain is not as steep as they may originally expect.

God of War: Ascension

God of War: Ascension is the first game in the chronological timeline of the series, taking place only six months after the tragic event that began Kratos’ vengeance-filled journey. The PS3 title will have players battling the three Furies; Megaera, Tisiphone, and Alecto, as well as other monsters inspired by Greek myth like the manticore, in a title that will take players around 8.5 hours to finish.

God of War: Chains of Olympus

The next game in the God of War timeline is the PSP title, God of War: Chains of Olympus. This game spans the course of about 5.5 hours, and tells the tale of Kratos’ task from Athena to find the Sun God, Helios, and stop the villainous plan that Persephone has concocted in the underworld.

God of War (2005)

Now that the two prologue games have been finished, players are now ready to take on the original God of War game that made its debut on the PS2 in 2005. The classic action game’s story takes around 9 hours to complete, and gives players the context for how Kratos attained his godhood in the first place.

God of War: Ghost of Sparta

Up next, players will want to play the other PSP God of War game: God of War: Ghost of Sparta. Revolving around Kratos and the relationship with his brother Deimos, Ghost of Sparta serves as a direct prequel to God of War 2 and reveals major details from the Spartans’ lineage. To complete the main story of the game, players will likely invest around 6.5 hours and will be rewarded with greater context for the next two games in the series.

God of War 2

God of War 2 opens with the other Olympian gods having disdain for Kratos and his violence as the new God of War. Following an intense battle with an animated version of the Colossus of Rhodes, Zeus kills the Ghost of Sparta, but he is saved by the Titan Gaia who instructs him to seek out the Fates in order to turn back time and seek revenge. This vengeance-filled story takes about 12 hours to complete and leaves on a huge cliffhanger, as Kratos ascends Mount Olympus to slay the Gods.

God of War 3

God of War 3 is the final act of the classic God of War series. Over the course of 10 hours, Kratos makes his dangerous trek to find Zeus and kill him, along with any other God or Goddess that stands in his way. Considering the utter ruin that is displayed by the end of this game, it was assumed by many that Kratos’ tale was at an end. However, 2018 saw the release of another game with a whole new mythos to explore.

God of War (2018)

God of War on PS4 is the latest installment in the God of War franchise, and is a direct sequel to God of War 3. While it hasn’t been stated just how long it’s been since Kratos laid waste to Olympus and its denizens, it appears to have been long enough that the former Greek God of War was able to find love and begin raising a child, Atreus. The 2018 God of War takes on the Norse pantheon of Gods, with Baldur serving as the primary antagonist alongside many other important Norse figures such as Freya making an appearance as well.

The critically-acclaimed prequel to God of War: Ragnarok is by far the longest entry in the series as it gave players an open-world map to explore for the first time in the franchise, as well as adding more RPG-like elements. Completing the main story alone will likely take players around 20.5 hours. That being said, a full completionist run could look closer to 50 hours.

If players add up the amount of time it takes to complete only the main story of each of these seven titles, they are looking at about 72 hours of total playtime. For those looking to go the extra mile and do completionist runs of all the games, about 126 hours of revenge will have to be prepared for. However, considering the stage that has been set for Ragnarok, this time should be worth it in the long-run.
