Yes, it sounds fine.

The difference is that «How old are you today?» can be used 365 days of the year, not only on birthdays. That is not how one would generally ask someone’s age, because the «today» in it sounds a bit odd when it’s not a birthday. However, when one’s exact age matters, such as for getting a driver’s license, that would be a reasonable way to ask the question.

I’m not sure I’d ask Anna how old she is, though. In U.S. culture, many women over 18 don’t like to be asked that question!

This sounds very strange to me, must be an AmE thing.

I speak AmE, and it sounds rather strange to me, too.

If I were to ask someone this question—and I would ask it only of a child or teenager, not of an adult (either male or female)—I’d simply ask, «How old are you today?»

That’s very common in Munster, Panj.

I think the «how old are you turning. » expression is a little archaic. I would have heard it from older members of my family and their friends. Were they alive, their age range would be from 90 to 110 years.

This is an interesting question since we don’t (in my experience) use «turn» in the second person, present tense, although we do use it in the third person in some contexts.

For example, there’s a country and western song by Merle Haggard called «Mama Tried,» that includes the line «He turned 21 in prison, facing life without parole.«

I have a similar question: a lady friend of mine told me today that it was her husband’s birthday yesterday. As far as I know, it would be quite correct to say, «He turned 40 yesterday», but what about putting it into an interrogative construction? Does «How old did he turn (yesterday)?» sound all right to a native speaker’s ears? Because «How old was he?» sounds to me as if he were dead now.

Thanks in advance.

Now I would never use turn in this way. Turn instead of ‘How old were you yesterday» does seem to be creeping into BE usage: I will turn in my grave if I ever use it in my after life.

I will be X years old later this year. I hope to still be compos mentis when I am X + 20 years old and to be able to answer

That’s exactly what I asked her. And then I began to wonder if it was possible to use the verb «turn» because in Russian we do use a verb that is much like the German «werden» in this situation.

George, do you mean to say «How old was he?» is the only acceptable option?

What’s your age? How old are/were you? All are part of my UK English upbringing. Turning with respect to age is completely outside my UK upbringing. I understand that turning is commonly used on the left hand side of the Pond. and is dribbling into the UK.

I’m not sure about that. Technically, your birthday is a 24 hour window which contains the point in time that lies exactly XX years after the moment of your birth. If you were born at 4pm and someone asks you at noon on your birthday, they ought to ask «How old will you turn today?» and if they ask you at 8pm, they should ask «How old did you turn today?». But, discreetly glossing over the possible complication of not being in the same time zone as where you were born, normally the questioner won’t know your birth time (most people don’t even know their own). Is the fiction really that you turn your new age as soon as the date changes at midnight? Would it not be better to posit that the turning actually takes all day?

Then you’d not only have a good excuse for celebrating all day long, but it’s OK to ask «How old are you turning today?»!

Year old? Years old? Year-old?

Nick is 16 years old.

His birthday is soon how old is he. His birthday is soon how old is he. His birthday is soon how old is he. His birthday is soon how old is he. His birthday is soon how old is he

His birthday is soon how old is he. His birthday is soon how old is he. His birthday is soon how old is he. His birthday is soon how old is he. His birthday is soon how old is he

His birthday is soon how old is he. His birthday is soon how old is he. His birthday is soon how old is he. His birthday is soon how old is he. His birthday is soon how old is he

That is a 20-year-old board game.

That board game is 20 years old.

My sister is 18 years old.

My sister is an 18-year-old girl.

Their baby son has just turned 2 years old.

They have a 2-year-old son.

She is in her 20s. He is in his late 40s.

His birthday is soon how old is he. His birthday is soon how old is he. His birthday is soon how old is he. His birthday is soon how old is he. His birthday is soon how old is he

He was born in the 1980s.

In the 1990s we lived in Munich.

Lingua Airlines.
