A Perfect Ham and Cheese Sandwich
Posted April 7, 2022 by Chris Last Updated April 28, 2022
Here I’ll show you the tastiest way to whip up a classic Ham and Cheese Sandwich!
When you’re scouting the sandwich section at the supermarket, you’ll more than likely spot the good old ham and cheese sandwich. It’s not one I ever find myself grabbing, just because it’s so much easier and tastier to make at home. But the combo of cheese and ham should be celebrated nevertheless, and that’s exactly what we’re doing today. Follow me…
Cheese and Ham Sandwich
What kind of bread to use?
Most ham and cheese sarnies use wholemeal seeded bread, and that’s exactly what I use. It’s quite a simple sandwich, so the extra texture and flavour in the bread work nicely.
What cheese goes well with a ham sandwich?
So many different cheeses work well with ham (Gruyere, Swiss, Red Leicester to name a few), but cheddar is the most classic option for a ham and cheese sandwich. I recommend a mature cheddar, just to pack in the flavour. Its sharpness will also help balance out the saltiness and sweetness of the ham.
Mayo vs Butter
Some ham and cheese sandwiches use butter, some use mayo. I personally like a combo of the two. Having said that you can use one or the other if you’d prefer.
Extra additions
You really don’t need much else, however, I do like a good pinch of cracked black pepper and a very thin spread of dijon mustard. Just make sure it’s a very thin layer of mustard, just so it doesn’t overpower the sandwich. If you don’t like mustard you can leave it out. Alternatively, if you prefer different mustards (English, wholegrain etc) then feel free to use that.
Process shots: spread bread with butter (photo 1), spread another slice with mustard (photo 2), top with mayo (photo 3), top butter with cheese (photo 4), add ham (photo 5), add pepper (photo 6), add bread (photo 7), slice in half (photo 8).
Toasted Ham and Cheese Sandwich (optional)
Typically I make cold ham and cheese sandwiches, but now and then I’ll toast it up. Toasted ham and cheese sandwiches (or ‘ham and cheese toasties’ / ‘ham grilled cheese’) are so simple to make.
Instead of spreading the butter/mayo on the inside, just spread one or the other on the outside. Add to a non-stick pan over medium heat and fry both sides until crisp, with the cheese melted in the centre. Alternatively, you can use a toastie machine if you have one!
Process shots: spread outside of sandwich with mayo or butter and add to pan (photo 1), fry both sides (photo 2), slice in half (photo 3).
Serving Ham and Cheese Sandwiches
I typically whip these up for a quick lunch, but they work great in the lunchbox too! Salt and vinegar crisps alongside is a non-negotiable 😋
What else can I add to a ham and cheese sandwich?
In all honesty, you don’t need anything else. Keep it classic! You could add all sorts of fillings such as tomatoes, onion, lettuce and pickle, but by that point, you’ve steered off the beaten track.
Alrighty, let’s tuck into the full recipe for this ham and cheese sandwich shall we?!
Epic Ham Sandwich (so easy!)
Posted April 28, 2022 by Chris Last Updated April 28, 2022
There’s nothing more delicious than a classic ham sandwich, and here I’ll show you exactly how I like mine!
There are so many different ways you can make a ham sandwich, with so many different filling combinations. Admittedly, for the longest time, I’d make a ham sandwich solely using what I knocking about in the fridge. However, since making it this way, it’s now something I go out of my way to make. Yes, it’s that good and yes, I’m blowing my own trumpet 😛 Follow me…
How to make the best ham sandwich
Alrighty, no beating around the bush, here’s what you’ll need:
Process shots: slice bread (photo 1), mix honey mustard mayo and spread on bread (photo 2), add onion (photo 3), pat tomatoes dry, then add to sandwich and season with salt (photo 4), add cheese (photo 5), fold in ham and season with black pepper (photo 6), add watercress (photo 7), add bread with more honey mustard mayo (photo 8).
Ham Sandwich FAQ
Can I use a different kind of cheese?
I love smoked cheese because it pairs with the ham so beautifully. If you don’t have smoked cheese then your next best bet is a mature cheddar. If you don’t have slices then you can grate it. In all cases, I wouldn’t go overboard with the cheese – keep the ham the star of the show and don’t overpower it.
What kind of ham to use?
I usually grab some big deli-style slices and use that. I also usually go for unflavoured (i.e. not honey-roasted or peppercorn crusted) just because you’ve already got the extra flavourings in the sandwich. If you had some leftover roast ham in the fridge that’d work great too!
How do I prevent this sandwich turning soggy?
The risk of sog mainly comes from the tomatoes. To counteract this you’ll want to pat the tomatoes will paper towels before you add them to the sandwich, just to soak up some of the unwanted moisture. Because they’re seasoned with salt, you’ll want to eat the sandwich right away, otherwise, the salt will begin drawing out water from the tomatoes and turn the sandwich soggy.
Can I make this sandwich ahead of time?
This is best made fresh! As I mentioned above, the longer it sits, the soggier it gets. You could get away with making it a little ahead of time and tightly covering in the fridge, but just don’t salt the tomatoes!
Serving a Ham Sandwich
I recommend slicing in half horizontally, as opposed to diagonally. The filling is more like to stay intact that way. This sandwich is awesome for lunch as it is, or with some ready salted crisps!

What to Serve with Ham Sandwiches (15 Hearty Side Dishes)
Wondering what to serve with ham sandwiches?
From tomato soup and macaroni salad to crunchy coleslaw, here are some of my all-time favorites.
To me, ham is synonymous with the holidays. Growing up, it was the star of the show!
There’s nothing like spending time with my family while enjoying slices of this sweet and savory meat.
After the holiday feast is over, we make ham sandwiches our go-to breakfast (and lunch… and dinner)!
And no one complains because we serve the sandwiches with different side dishes every day to keep everyone coming back for more.
Today, I’m sharing 15 hearty sides that pair perfectly with ham sandwiches. There’s no need to wait for the holiday season.
Get ready for the most unforgettable, spectacular meal that can be enjoyed all year round!
1. Easy Creamy Tomato Soup
Soup and sandwiches always make a great combo.
With tomato soup, grilled cheese has always been the best pairing. But it couldn’t hurt to experiment a little!
How about a ham sandwich for a change?
The great thing about this duo is that you get a contrast of flavors – sweet, savory, tangy – that are sure to tickle the tastebuds!
And did you know that with only three ingredients, you can make a spectacular tomato soup? Yup, just some tomatoes, onions, and butter are all you need!
2. Potato Soup
If you want something richer than tomato soup, opt for potato soup instead!
Potatoes are all about starch, so you’ll get something satisfying when you serve potato soup with ham sandwiches.
The creaminess of the milk, cheese, and sour cream, the saltiness of the bacon, and the richness of the potato makes this soup so heavenly.
Together with a ham sandwich, it becomes a truly magical meal.
3. New England Clam Chowder
Speaking of rich and hearty, here’s another option for you: clam chowder! It’s the perfect side dish for colder weather.
With its scrumptious ingredients: potatoes, clams, bacon, milk, and butter, this chowder is comfort food at its finest.
And if you pair it with a ham sandwich, you’ll get a beautiful harmony of flavors and textures.
4. Potato Salad
Do you have red potatoes, dijon dressing, and dill on hand? If you do, make a potato salad.
This delectable summer side is a must for your ham sandwich! Apart from being super easy to make, the flavors of this salad are so on point.
If you think that potatoes and a sandwich might be too heavy, think again!
Thanks to the dressing and the dill, this one tastes lighter than most potato salads.
You’ll get a tasty dish that’s the perfect balance for your meal.
5. Coleslaw
If you love pairing something crisp with a tender dish, then coleslaw is the way to go.
The cabbage and carrots offer that awesome crunch that will break the monotony of the ham and the bread!
And, it’s also yummy, to boot! Aside from the usual ingredients, I also like to add raisins and walnuts to my coleslaw.
Think that combo is odd? Give it a try! I guarantee you’ll love it.
6. Parmesan Rosemary Potato Chips
Add a textural contrast to your tender sandwich by pairing it with potato chips. They’re crisp, salty, and add a fun dimension to your meal.
And when you make your own? Well, they’re downright addictive!
Have you tried putting chips in your sandwich? It’s my favorite thing to do.
7. Deviled Eggs
If you’re reading this around Easter, then you most likely already have a ton of hard-boiled eggs lying around the kitchen.
Want to put them to good use after the egg-hunting fun? Make deviled eggs out of them!
I mean, why not? They’re delicious, easy to make, and taste great with ham sandwiches!
8. Egg Salad
Here’s something else you can do with eggs: make a mean egg salad. Oh, how I love this rich and creamy concoction!
I particularly love it with ham sandwiches. I even add it to the sandwich itself!
You can’t go wrong with a ham and egg salad sandwich. It’s the perfect food pairing, ladies and gents!
9. Fresh Fruit Salad
If you want to highlight a ham sandwich as the star of your meal, then pair it with any sliced fruit, and call it a day!
Sure, it may be a simple addition, but the meal won’t be lacking in flavor.
In fact, I love how the lightness and crispness of fruits complement the richness of a ham sandwich.
I prefer serving mine with watermelon because the sweetness and juiciness in every bite are just divine.
But this recipe with pie filling is seriously to die for! The added juices really make it pop!
That said, apples and cheese work well, too! The crispness of the apples plus the saltiness from the cheese makes it such a fantastic side to a ham sandwich.
10. Macaroni Salad
Creamy, savory, and hearty: nothing beats the classic macaroni salad.
This timeless salad has everything anyone can ask for in a side dish.
Complete with pasta, eggs, pickles, onion, bell pepper, mayo, and mustard, it has all the works!
Serve macaroni salad with a ham sandwich and you’ll have the most satisfying meal! This combo is hearty, though, so I suggest you bring your appetite!
11. Easy Refrigerator Pickles
Sometimes, all you need is a simple ingredient to make a meal complete. With a ham sandwich, all it takes is a sweet and tangy pickle!
Apart from the flavor contrasts, a pickle also adds that lovely crunch that you won’t find in a ham sandwich.
Together, a ham sandwich and a pickle make a humble yet delicious meal.
And guess what? They’re crazy-easy to make at home!
12. Twice Baked Potato Casserole
I love potatoes. Anything made with potatoes is heaven to me. But this baked potato casserole is in a league of its own.
Complete with cheddar cheese, bacon, and garlic, you cannot ask for a creamier, cheesier, more drool-worthy side dish!
And it’s incredibly easy to whip up, too! With the help of the good-old potato masher, your baked potato casserole will come together in no time.
13. Scalloped Potatoes
Speaking of potatoes, here’s another idea for ya: scalloped potatoes.
Do you know what I love about this casserole? It tastes divine with absolutely any entrée, and a ham sandwich is no exception.
How can anybody say no to thinly sliced potatoes loaded with cheese and dressed in an ultra-creamy sauce?
Making scalloped potatoes doesn’t take much effort. All you need is a mandolin, and you’ll be able to slice those potatoes in a jiffy!
Then, all that’s left is topping them with cheese and sauce and baking them to perfection.
14. Mac & Cheese
Mac and cheese is, and forever will be, a favorite of mine. I love it so much; I don’t even consider it a side dish, but an entrée!
And of course, it pairs well with a ham sandwich, too. The richness of the dish plus the sweetness of the ham makes one heck of an awesome combination.
Want to make your mac and cheese even more delightful? Flavor it with garlic powder and white pepper. You’ll thank me later.
15. Baked Beans
Last on our list is another comfort food that will take your ham sandwich meal to the next level.
Baked beans are a phenomenal side that goes well with anything, ham sandwiches included.
There’s nothing like hearty beans flavored with barbecue sauce, brown sugar, onions, jalapenos, and bacon.
Add ham to that equation, and you’ll have the perfect meal!

Unique Ham Sandwiches
These easy sandwich recipes feature ham as the star ingredient but are also filled with different types of veggies, cheeses, sauces, breads, and other animal proteins. The collection offers sandwiches at different levels of difficulty, but in general, they’re fairly easy to put together and work well as quick lunches or appetizers at parties, when sliced into smaller portions.
Use our suggestions below as templates to come up with your own creations, and think outside the box because ham comes in many forms. Sharpen your knife, get your cutting board, and make room in your weekly menu for these fantastic sandwiches.
Ham and Pimento Cheese Biscuit Sandwiches
Rich, creamy pimento cheese is irresistible piled on top of a flaky buttery biscuit with a few slices of salty-sweet country fried ham. Add bright pickled red onions, earthy bright green scallions, and bold spices for a satisfying combo.
It takes a total of 6 minutes to put one sandwich together, but if you have everything ready and double or triple the amounts you can offer these at lunch for each guest to assemble their own.
Serve with a fruity and refreshing salad like this kale and fruit.
Southern Ham and Cheese Biscuit Sandwiches
These miniature Southern sandwiches are perfect for picnics or parties, with flaky biscuits, smokey fried ham, buttery muenster cheese, and sweet honey butter. Buy biscuits at the store or make them from scratch, but the fun part comes when you use a cookie cutter to shape the dough into your favorite shape.
It takes 35 minutes to make 6 small sandwiches if you’re baking them from scratch, but much less if you have store-bought biscuits at hand.
Ham and Cheese Cornbread Sandwich
This sandwich calls for homemade cornbread for an absolutely Southern experience, but feel free to buy pre-made cornbread for an equally tasty result. Make special «chow chow» mayo (similar to picalilli) and spread a generous amount on your warm cornbread. Top with cheddar cheese, thinly sliced baked ham, and jalapeños.
If you’re making the cornbread at home, the sandwich takes a total of 35 minutes to be ready, but only 10 if you’re using premade cornbread.
Pickled Peach Grilled Cheese with Virginia Ham
These little slider grilled cheese sandwiches are filled with a dollop of woodsy mulberry jam, some salty slices of Virginia ham, a couple of bright pickled peach segments, and nutty shreds of gouda. Grill them in between two sweet slices of Hawaiian bread, and have your lunch ready in 15 minutes.
Make with pickled peaches or sweet ripe ones if they’re in season.
Try making this pumpkin salad with tahini dressing, the perfect side for this hearty sandwich.
Monte Cristo Brie Sliders
Grilled on the stove and not deep-fried like many are, our Monte Cristos make French toast out of crusty French bread and top them with creamy brie, thinly sliced turkey and ham, and tangy raspberry jam. Make them your own with your choices of types of meats and cheese.
This ultra-rich sandwich needs a very fresh salad on the side like this marinated kale with garlic salad.
Traditional Cuban Sandwich
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true» />
This salty, rich, and tangy sandwich is a must. Cubanos are a take on grilled ham and cheese, but they go a step further, adding pork, pickles, and mustard. In authentic Cubanos, the roasted pork is homemade, marinated in a special sauce, which gives the sandwich its particular flavor.
Our simpler version uses store-bought ingredients that you put together on top of Cuban bread and then press until the height reduces to a third of the original. Serve with fried yuca. You’ll be ready to bite into your Cubano in 15 minutes.
Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwich
Chicken cordon bleu is typically made by stuffing ham and cheese inside a chicken breast, but for this sandwich, we’re stacking the ham and cheese on top of buns, popping it in the broiler, then adding the chicken.
For a better result, we recommend a brine of buttermilk for the chicken breast for as little as 8 hours and ideally for 48 hours in the refrigerator. Once the chicken is ready, pat-dry and coat with flour and salt and pepper before frying. To make your sandwich, spread mustard on bread and put bread halves with cheese on one and ham on the other under a broiler. Place fried chicken cutlet on top of one half and close with the other on top. Serve hot with some kale chips.
Goat Cheese and Ham Sandwich with Apples
Make this quick sandwich in 10 minutes. Just place ham, apples, honey, arugula, and goat cheese on top of a sliced baguette drizzled with olive oil.
Use kale instead of arugula or crumb up some Ricotta instead of goat cheese. Make a fresh apple slaw to serve with your sandwich.
