What is your home life like? How big is your family? Do your parents work? Do you live in a house or an apartment?

This week, Spotlight on Russia talks to Anna, (13) about her life in Moscow.

— Anna, can you tell me a little about your family? —

Well, my family is quite small. I haven’t got any brothers or sisters. My grandmother lives with us, so all together there are four people in my family.

— Do you live in a house or an apartment? —

We live in a big apartment near the city centre. I love it here.

— Do your parents work?

Yes, they both work. They are teachers. I am lucky because my grandmother looks after me when they are at work. I often help her around the house and we go shopping together in the afternoons.

— What is it like being a child in Russia? —

We have a lot of fun, like most children, but winter makes our life a bit different. It gets very cold so we can’t play outside. When it snows I go skiing and ice-skating. Little children also build snowmen and have snowball fights.

— Do you spend much time outside? —

When the weather in warm, we spend plenty of time outside. At the weekends I love going on bike rides with my friends. I also enjoy trips to the countryside with my parents.

So, how do you like life in Moscow? Is your life the same as Anna’s or different? Write in and tell us about yourself.

I think life in Moscow is very exciting. My life is not very different from Anna’s. My family is quite big. I have a little brother and a sister. My grandparents live with us. We all live in a big/small house. Both my parents work. They are lawyers/farmers/doctors. In my free time, I help my parents around the house or I play board games with my friends. When the weather is warm, I go on trips with my parents.

Compare your life to Anna’s. Discuss it in class. —

Anna’s family is small but my family is big. Anna hasn’t got any brothers or sisters but I have a baby brother. Anna lives in an apartment near the city center but I live in a house in the suburbs. My grandparents don’t live with us. Both Anna’s parents work. My mother doesn’t work but my father is a doctor. In my free time, I enjoy going ice-skating. When the weather is warm, I love playing hide and seek outside with my friends.

What is your answer?

So if your grandmother and aunt also live with you, would you answer: My family is 5, father, mother, grandmother, aunt and I?

In México family is only sibblings and parents, if close relative lives with us we may add. We are 5; 3 kids and my parents, but my grandma also lives with us.

«Eine 5-köpfige Familie» in German means the family with parents = 5 (2 parents, 3 kids; could also be a single parent and four children).

From a Swede, you might get different answers, depending on their current situation. Usually, we mean the nuclear family that we are living with, i.e. parents and children, but there are so many kids having two families these days because their parents have divorced and started new families with their new respective spouses. These kids would easily start counting the members of both families together, particularly if they live with both families on a regular basis.

If you’re grown up and single, you might still refer to your parents and siblings as your family, even if you no longer live with them.

The answer is Yes and No, if I am living with my grandfather, grandmother and an aunt, I will answer, «My family is three, my grandfather, grandmother and me.» and I will add that one of my aunts is living with us.

But maybe this is depending on the situation. Some family will count their aunt as a family member. It is also possible to reply «we are 6 member family» where you have your wife, father, mother, son and a pet dog. Dogs and cats are becoming more important family members these days.

This is interesting. In Japan, too, if you are over 20 or so and not living together, it is seldom to refer to the parents and siblings when asked «How large is your family?» Maybe in most cases, people will reply saying «I’m living single. But I have parents, one sister and two brothers who are living together in their hometown.»

Maybe the expression «I have one-member family» is not used all over the world.

Usually, Hispanic people answer by giving you the approximate total number of living relatives of direct lineage. I mean, like first cousins and such. So, if you ask them, «How large is your family?,» they may start counting with their fingers:

«Momma, Pops, my six brothers and three sisters, Aunt Concha, Cousin Pepe, Cousin Perla…»

And, before you know it, you’ll end up with a list of over twenty people.

So, at my work, when somebody asks this question, tipically they rephrase to, «How many people live in the same house?,» so that maybe there will only be fifteen or so people in the list.

I would just answer the number of my nuclear family (five). We assume people have two parents (or one) so what the question really means is «how many siblings do you have».

If you want to know about the rest of someone’s family, aunts, uncles, cousins etc. you would ask «how big is your extended family».

I would probably answer that we are many, and suggest maybe you mean nuclear family only?

In which case I would answer 4, although my brother and I no longer live at our parents’ place.

I live by myself. My brother lives with his wife and step-daughter. My grandmother lives with my parents.

If asked how big my family is, I’d say:

«I have one brother.»
or
«There are 4 of us.» (parents, brother, me)

I might go on to say that my grandmother lives with my parents.

In Romania, I think we’d probably take it to mean that the other is asking how large the nuclear family is. It doesn’t matter if you live with your parents or not, if you don’t have your own family yet, then you answer by counting your siblings and parents (and sometimes the pets, but I haven’t encountered that too often, except with older people with no children).

If I don’t count the three cats, to «how large is your family» I’d answer with «there’s ten of us» (eight kids ).

How big is your family?

Jeff, Canada
I have a, by modern standards, I have a big family: seven people. My parents, my mom and dad. I have a sister, an older brother, two younger brothers and myself and the neat thing about my family now is my sister lives in America, one brother lives in Australia, one brother lives England, one brother lives in Canada and I live in Japan, so we are spread out all over the world.

Arienne, Norway
In my family there are five people: my older brother, my younger brother and myself and of course my parents. We also have a dog but he is unfortunately very sick so we might not have a dog for very much longer. My family lives about an hour away from me in Norway. I live in Oslo which is the capital and they live in a very small city south of it.

Rebecca, Australia
How many people are in my family? There are four people in my family: my mother, my father, my younger brother and myself. I actually don’t live with my family anymore. I live in a country town three hours away, so I don’t get to see my family very much. At the moment, we also have two dogs as well. which is nice.

Sabriya, Oman
There are five people: my father, my mother, my younger brother, and my younger sister. Unfortunately, they are all way from me now and I miss them so much.

Swinki, Kenya
How big is my family? I’m the youngest in the family of five childen. My sister, whose right ahead of me, has a baby so I could say that we are six kids in the family. Everyone lives in Kenya. I’m the only one who lives abroad and we love each other. We used to hate each other up till seven years ago but now we are in love with each other.

Tini, Vietnam
How big is my family? Like we have four people in my family and we are pretty much a nuclear family, of course there are my mom, my dad, myself and my little brother. He’s called Kevin. And we used to have a dog, and we named him Lulu.
