An exception is an event, which occurs during the execution of a program, that disrupts the normal flow of the program’s instructions.

They are important for understanding how to read the stacktrace. Look how the NumberFormatException is thrown from Integer#parseInt :

or later if the format of the input String s is not parsable:

How do I fix it?
Well, don’t fix the fact that it’s thrown. It’s good that it’s thrown. There are some things you need to consider:

Ad. 1.

The first line of a message is an information that the Exception occurred and the input String which caused the problem. The String always follows : and is quoted ( «some text» ). Then you become interested in reading the stacktrace from the end, as the first few lines are usually NumberFormatException ‘s constructor, parsing method etc. Then at the end, there is your method in which you made a bug. It will be pointed out in which file it was called and in which method. Even a line will be attached. You’ll see. The example of how to read the stacktrace is above.

Ad. 2.

When you see, that instead of «For input string:» and the input, there is a null (not «null» ) it means, that you tried to pass the null reference to a number. If you actually want to treat is as 0 or any other number, you might be interested in my another post on StackOverflow. It’s available here.

Ad. 3.

If the String that follows the : and is quoted looks like a number in your opinion, there might be a character which your system don’t decode or an unseen white space. Obviously » 6″ can’t be parsed as well as «123 » can’t. It’s because of the spaces. But it can occure, that the String will look like «6» but actually it’s length will be larger than the number of digits you can see.

In this case I suggest using the debugger or at least System.out.println and print the length of the String you’re trying to parse. If it shows more than the number of digits, try passing stringToParse.trim() to the parsing method. If it won’t work, copy the whole string after the : and decode it using online decoder. It’ll give you codes of all characters.

Ad. 4.

Finally we come to the place in which we agree, that we can’t avoid situations when it’s user typing «abc» as a numeric string. Why? Because he can. In a lucky case, it’s because he’s a tester or simply a geek. In a bad case it’s the attacker.

Take it to the Apple Store. Tell them exactly what is going on and that it’s a real problem for you. Even if they can’t recreate the problem there in store, they will replace the device. I had a similar issue with my iPad. I took it in and explained everything and even though they couldn’t replicate it they replaced it.

If anything, they will help you get a resolution. I’ve never gone into an Apple store with a problem only to have them tell me «Sorry, nothing we can do.»

Basically, this allows you to access some system-level functions from an onscreen menu. In particular, this gives you a software home button, and it’s baked into iOS5! It even responds to double and triple taps. If your home button is flaky or broken, this is a robust workaround. This also comes in handy if any of your other hardware components are broken; you can mute/unmute, do a «shake», adjust volume, rotate/lock screen.

To access it, go to Settings->General->Accessibility :

You will get an overlayed touch target, which opens a menu where you can operate the home button, among other things:

I’ve seen many «flakey» home buttons be a problem with the software and not a real hardware issue. Getting it into the hands of a Apple Store technician is great as they are trained to work with you to isolate the issue to hardware or software and reach resolution or a plan to isolate it further. I would be prepared to let them erase the device (have a portable or backup made at home before leaving for the store) so they can eliminate software as a cause while you are in the store. That saves both of you a return trip or loss of data/contacts/apps.

Since they see hundreds of devices a week and have no incentive to not swap your phone if it’s really a hardware issue, they will often see minor physical things before most end users will.

As to flakey software, oftentimes a physical home button press gets delayed or lost due to the OS doing a task (garbage collection / memory warning) or a runaway process taking lots of CPU.

Here is the procedure I use to be sure it’s a bad home button hardware if I’m on the fence taking an iOS device in for service and it’s not convenient to simply erase the device and set it up as new to get the cleanest OS setup possible.

What Causes Dropped Calls?

The main reason for dropped calls is due to weak cell phone signal. Weak signal can be caused by external factors like cell tower distance, mother nature, and building material (will be discussed later in this article). Dropped calls can also be linked to your phone’s cellular network.

If you’re just starting to experience dropped calls and they only occur randomly, we will go over some troubleshooting tricks in the next section. If you always experience dropped calls and they seem to occur in the same areas, try our troubleshooting tricks and if they don’t work keep reading for more information as to why.

Troubleshooting Tricks to Fix Dropped Calls

These tricks work for iPhone, Samsung, and any other smartphone devices. They work best if you are dealing with signal issues related to the phone itself.

Remove and Inspect Your Sim Card

A sim card is a small card that gives you access to the cellular network. Shut off your phone and with a small sim card tool or a paperclip remove your sim card located along the sides of the phone. If your phone has a removable back, the sim card might be behind the battery. Once the sim card has been removed, inspect it to see if it’s bent or cracked. A damaged sim card can be the cause of your dropped calls since you need it to access the network. To replace it, you will have to get in contact with your service provider.

If the sim card is not damaged, reinsert it. Turn on the phone, and make a phone call to test if the problem is fixed. This simple process can reset the network you are receiving and fix the issue.

If the troubleshooting tricks did not work, the dropped calls are not directly linked to signal issues related to your phone. There are many external factors that can cause weak signal that are out of your control. We will be focusing on the top three.

First, we must understand how cell phone signal works. Cell phones transmit radio waves in all directions to communicate; they can be absorbed and reflected by different objects. The interference of objects can cause weak signal or block out cell signal completely creating dead zones. A dead zone is areas where mobile phone service is unavailable because the signal between the cell tower and cell phone is blocked or reduced.

Cell Tower Distance

Opensignal is a great app that helps you locate the nearest tower and shows you a coverage maps based on your current location. To get the best results, the app will need access to your location.

Cellreception.com is a web page that helps you locate the nearest tower. First, it will ask for your zip code or city. Once that information is filled in, you will need to select which service provider you have. If your carrier is not listed choose the parent company of the carrier. A map will pop up and you can zoom in and look for your address to find the nearest tower.

Mother Nature

As crazy as it sounds trees, hills, valleys, and mountains can block radio waves. For example, if you live on one side of a hill, but the cell phone tower is on the other side, the radio waves have to travel around the hill. As mentioned earlier radio waves can be absorbed and reflected, the hill is blocking a direct line from the cell tower to you. It will absorb and reflect some of the radio waves as it travels. As a result, you could be in a dead zone or get poor cell signal and will continuously drop calls.

Building Material

Do you have a better signal outside your house or office building? The reason why you might be dropping calls indoors is because of the building material. Material like metal, tinted glass, concrete, brick, plaster, and insulation can weaken the signal or block out the signal completely. I just switched to vs2010 from vs2008. Exact same solution, except now every single call to a C++ dll yields a ‘pinvokestackimbalance’ exception.

This exception does not get fired in 2008. I have complete access to the C++ dll and to the calling application. There does not appear to be any problem with the pinvoke, but this problem is making debugging other problems impossible; the IDE is stopping constantly to tell me about these things.

First, understand that the code is wrong (and always has been). The «pInvokeStackImbalance» is not an exception per se, but a managed debugging assistant. It was off by default in VS2008, but a lot of people did not turn it on, so it’s on by default in VS2010. The MDA does not run in Release mode, so it won’t trigger if you build for release.

Better to solve this issue its not much difficult here I am mentioning some of the methods, it may same as some of my friends mentioned above. I am working with PCSC a Smartcard application I spend around one week, get pissed off did lot of changes finally got the solutions.

If the error is because of signature not matching you just click on PInvoke.net> Insert PInvoke Signatures

Enter the name of the dll and click on search you can see the all the functions of that dll in search result window, Click on the function you will get a signature for that particular Function.

Use that signature and you need to modify your programs according to that Signature, Mostly the data Type.

This solve my problem you might have different problem like callingConvention or additional attributes need to specify while importing dll.

I got this problem also when using VS2010. What it is: Visual Studio defaults to 64 bit code for ‘any CPU’. The pointers to variables (eg. strings) now become 64 bit when calling your external Dlls, where as all your reliable and trusted Dlls use 32 bit pointers.

Don’t assume there is anything wrong with your Dlls, there isn’t.

Change your VS settings to generate X86 code like this (Express versions of C#)

I notice also, that even though computers have doubled in power every 12 months, my current computer with 1gig of RAM, seems no faster than my first 486 with 4 Meg. Don’t worry about using 64 bit code, it’s not going to be faster or better because it is built on a huge cumbersome object-orientated tower of bloat.

My games keep freezing and crashing. How can I fix it?

I recently (for christmas) got a Gigabyte GTX 560 ti. When I first installed it I played mainly on old games (CoD 1, GTA 3 etc.), and all was well. However as soon as I started playing on anything more advanced, it began to freeze and crash. After about five minutes the screen will go black for a few seconds before then coming back on again. It would then do it again 20 seconds later. This doesn’t sound too bad, but it is extremely annoying, and sometimes instead of coming back on the game will crash. I am fairly new to, and therefore not very good at, computer hardware in general, so I could do with some help and advice.

At the moment I think it could be my card overheating, as I have a micro case, however whilst taking the side of the case off and turning the fans up to 100% seems to make CoD 2 freeze less often, it does still freeze, and a game like Far Cry 3 is unplayable. So my questions are twofold:

1) What is causing this to happen? Is it being caused by my GPU overheating or something else?

2)How can I (permanently) fix it?

Intel i3-2120 @ 3.30 GHz
Gigabyte GTX 560 ti
8GB RAM
1TB Hard Drive
550w OCZ PSU

Whilst playing Far Cry 3, the gpu usage is listed as 99% consistantly, and the temperature is generally in the low 80s or high 70s. I don’t know whether or not this is normal.
