Josh Radnor starred as Ted Mosby, an architect looking for his perfect match in New York City.
Ted Mosby spent the whole series telling his two children about all the highs and lows of his love life that led to him meeting their mom.
Even though Radnor played the part on-screen, the Ted who narrated the show was voiced by «Full House» star Bob Saget.
Radnor played Lonny Flash on Amazon Prime Video’s show «Hunters.»
The show, which centers on Nazi hunters, also starred Al Pacino and Logan Lerman.
After «HIMYM» ended, Radnor starred as a doctor on PBS’ «Mercy Street» and portrayed a teacher on Fox’s «Rise.»
He also starred in a Broadway production of the Tony Award-nominated play «Disgraced.»
Radnor is also part of a musical duo called Radnor and Lee, comprised of himself and longtime friend Ben Lee. Their new album called «Golden State» was released in June 2020.
Jason Segel portrayed Marshall Eriksen, Ted’s loyal friend since the two met as roommates at Wesleyan University.
Marshall worked as an environmental lawyer and later became a New York State Supreme Court judge.
Segel created and starred on an AMC anthology series called «Dispatches From Elsewhere.»
«It’s the closest I could come to my version of ‘The Wizard of Oz,'» Segel said of the show while at the Berlinale Series Market and Conference in February 2020. «Four people go on a quest to find a missing girl, and in the process try to find themselves, find community and find some of the magic that gets lost.»
Around the same time as his run on «HIMYM,» Segel also starred in, directed, and executive produced a few comedies: «The Muppets» (2011), «The Five-Year Engagement» (2012), and «Sex Tape» (2014).
In addition, he portrayed real-life novelist David Foster Wallace in 2015’s «End of the Tour.»
Segel is also a New York Times bestselling author.
His «Nightmares!» series is comprised of three books and cowritten by Kirsten Miller. Segel and Miller also teamed up for a young adult book series called «Last Reality.» The three books in the series are called «Otherworld,» «OtherEarth,» and «OtherLife.»
Cobie Smulders played Robin Scherbatsky, a proud Canadian and TV journalist.
As a teenager, she was a pop star known as Robin Sparkles. One of her hit songs was called «Sandcastles in the Sand.»
Smulders is known for her role as Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Smulders made her MCU debut in 2012’s «The Avengers» and has since appeared in several Marvel movies, most recently «Spider-Man: Far From Home.»
Smulders reunited with «HIMYM» costar Neil Patrick Harris for Netflix’s «A Series of Unfortunate Events.» The actress also starred on Netflix’s «Friends From College,» which lasted for two seasons.
Her most recent role was on ABC’s «Stumptown,» which got canceled despite previously getting renewed for season two.
Smulders has been married to «Saturday Night Live» alum Taran Killam since 2012 and they have two daughters named Shaelyn and Janita.
The actress has spoken openly about her battle with ovarian cancer, which she was diagnosed with at the age of 25 in 2008. She first revealed her health issue in a cover story for Women’s Health in 2015, then penned an essay for Lenny Letter the following year.
Characters / How I Met Your Mother: Main Characters
Edit Locked
Ted Mosby
The main character and narrator, starting as a 27-year-old architect and eventually a professor of architecture at Columbia with an excessively romantic disposition, looking for love in New York. This being television, it goes about as well as you’d expect.
Marshall Eriksen
Ted’s former college roommate and best friend, a sweet-tempered and dorky goofball who makes his way through law school and eventually takes the Bar during the course of the series. In the pilot, he becomes engaged to his girlfriend Lily. They get married later and continue to develop through the series as a married couple, facing many hurdles over time.
Robin Scherbatsky
A news reporter from Canada whom Ted falls for at first sight in the Pilot Episode but their inherent differences (Ted is ready to settle down, she is Married to the Job) prevent anything between them at first, although they do explore their feelings for each other throughout the series. Regardless, she mixes in well with the gang and becomes best friends with Lily. Her independent nature gives her a fun mix of geeky/guyness, which has even attracted Barney to her in a real relationship. Her history as a brief Canadian pop star «Robin Sparkles» becomes a Running Gag throughout the series.
Lily Aldrin
An artist and kindergarten teacher with a slightly rebellious streak, who is nevertheless deeply committed to Marshall (who have been together since the first week of college). Together they represent the voice of stable, adult relationships in the series, as the resident Beta Couple.
Barney Stinson
An unrepentant bachelor who is proudly a counterpoint to Lily and Marshall’s monogamous bliss. Barney is a business executive who works a high paying desk job, although his exact job is always shrouded in mystery (until Season 9). He is dedicated to a free lifestyle, does exactly what he wants all of the time, purposely does not establish any romantic relationships and makes no apologies for what he is.
So awesome he has his own page.
The woman about whom Future Ted is telling a story to his kids about, with the story of how they met is apparently one of the greatest stories ever heard. During the course of the series little is known about her and how she fits into Ted’s story, with only a few hard facts such as owning a yellow umbrella, being at the same place Ted was at a few distinct moments (a St. Patrick’s Day party and Ted trying to teach the wrong class) and that she and Ted met on the day of a wedding. She is eventually revealed in the final season, remaining nameless but peripherally involved with the plot, including some Flash Forwards, saving her and Ted’s official meeting until the Grand Finale.
Ted’s kids living in the year 2030. For his own reasons, he subjected them to a lengthy and needlessly detailed tale of how he met their mother. While nameless for the majority of the series, their names were later revealed in «Unpause.»
Season 9
How I Met Your Mother
How I Met Your Mother ends not with a bang, not with a whimper, but with an uneven final season that captures the show’s best and worst tendencies.

Something New
Every Friends Actor In How I Met Your Mother
Friends and How I Met Your Mother shared many similarities in terms of the core plot — and both sitcoms also featured many of the same actors.
Friends and How I Met Your Mother are often compared to one another, but many viewers may have missed the number of actors who appeared in both sitcoms. The comedies are two of the most beloved titles to hit primetime in recent decades. Even though their broadcast runs have come and gone, they each continue to gain popularity thanks to streaming.
Friends, a series created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, first debuted on NBC in September 1994. It followed six close friends living in New York City as they faced the struggles of adulthood. It quickly grew into one of the most popular series on TV before coming to an end in 2004. A year later, CBS premiered a series about a group of five friends called How I Met Your Mother, which was also set in New York City. The sitcom, from Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, was often described as a Friends-type show, but it succeeded in building its own identity.
Considering that Friends spanned a decade and How I Met Your Mother lasted nearly that long, both titles acquired a large number of guest stars. There was also a very long list of actors who appeared in minor roles, and many worked on both series during their respective runs. The following list is every actor who could be found on Friends and How I Met Your Mother.
Christina Pickles
Christina Pickles was one of the most prominent actresses to have roles in both Friends and How I Met Your Mother. The actress first appeared in Friends as Judy Geller, the mother of Ross and Monica. Over the course of the series, Pickles appeared in 19 episodes total, with her last coming during the show’s tenth and final season. Six years later, Pickles joined How I Met Your Mother to portray Rita, Lily’s grandmother. The character appeared in two episodes within the sitcom between 2009 and 2011.
Christine Rose
Avid How I Met Your Mother viewers would recognize Christine Rose as Ted’s mother, Virginia Mosby. The character was involved in eight episodes in the series and notably married a hippie named Clint. Before that, Rose played the mother of a latecomer on Friends. She portrayed Bitsy Hannigan, the mother of Paul Rudd’s Mike Hannigan, who wasn’t too fond of her son’s future wife, Phoebe. Her stint lasted for two episodes on Friends.
Anne Dudek
Anne Dudek is another actress who appeared in both sitcoms and cleverly played similar characters two years apart. First, Dudek portrayed the role of Precious, the girlfriend of Mike in Friends season 10. Mike memorably broke up with Precious on her birthday but that wouldn’t be Dudek’s final time in that situation. The actress appeared in How I Met Your Mother season 1 as Ted’s ex-girlfriend, Natalie. He too broke up with her on her birthday, but the two later got back together for a brief time.
Maggie Wheeler
Friends fans certainly got to know Maggie Wheeler’s character, Janice. The character, recognized by her infamous voice, served as Chandler’s love interest for a period of time. Even after the two broke up, Janice would pop up from time to time. Wheeler appeared in every season of Friends, except for season 6 in which just her voice was heard. In How I Met Your Mother, Wheeler portrayed a real estate agent in the season 3 episode «Dowisetrepia» when Marshall and Lily were searching for a new apartment.
Sherri Shepherd
Sherri Sheperd once played Rhonda the tour guide at the museum that Ross worked at in Friends. The actress had a much larger role in How I Met Your Mother as Daphne, a woman that Marshall continuously argued with during season 9. After starting off on the wrong foot, Marshall and Daphne split the last rental car to drive back to New York together. Her arc lasted a total of eight episodes in the sitcom’s final season.
Other Actors That Appeared In Friends & HIMYM

Carr then appeared in How I Met Your Mother season 8 as the elderly British woman, Mrs. Buckminster, that Marshall and Lily wanted to hire as a nanny but couldn’t afford.

The narrator, who was supposed to be an older Ted Mosby, was voiced by Bob Saget.
Josh Radnor played Ted on the CBS show, but the late Bob Saget was cast to do the «future Ted» voice-overs that narrated the series.
The show wasn’t actually filmed in New York City.
New York City may be a central character in the series, but according to the New York Post, they really filmed on a studio lot in Los Angeles that was designed to look like the Big Apple.
Jim Parsons was almost cast as Barney.
Before Neil Patrick Harris landed the role, Jim Parsons auditioned for Barney on the show. But there are no hard feelings from the «The Big Bang Theory» star.
«Look, it all worked out fine … Neil’s better for the part, let’s be honest,» Parsons said on a 2015 episode of «Live With Kelly,» according to Yahoo.
Jennifer Love Hewitt almost played Robin.
Real-life Canadian Cobie Smulders eventually snagged the part of Robin, but only after Jennifer Love Hewitt turned it down.
According to E! News, cocreator Craig Thomas wrote on Reddit that Love Hewitt decided to do CBS’ «The Ghost Whisperer» instead of «HIMYM.»
Britney Spears saved the show from low ratings.
The pop singer guest-starred as Abby the receptionist on season three, episode 13. According to E! News, cocreator Carter Bays told Reddit that she helped bring in new viewers and saved the show from low ratings.
«By golly she put our show on the map. It can’t be overstated,» Bays wrote. «Britney Spears rescued us from ever being on the [renewal] bubble again. Thanks Britney!»
The show’s creators are in a real-life band, and they wrote and performed the series’ theme song.
The theme song of «HIMYM» is known for its infectiously catchy tune, and it turns out the show’s creators had a big hand in creating it.
The song, «Hey Beautiful,» is by the band The Solids, which Bays and Carter are both members of. Bays does vocals and guitar, and Thomas plays the drums.
A real proposal happened during the filming of the show.
According to the New York Daily News, Jana Rugan and Timothy Russo really got engaged on the season-two finale.
Russo’s friend wrote for the series and arranged for the couple to stand in as extras since it was Rugan’s favorite show.
On the episode, Robin and Ted were on a date when the waiter mistakenly brought Robin a champagne glass with a ring at the bottom. She freaked out — and so did Ted since he wasn’t actually proposing — then Russo came over to claim the ring as his and proposed to Rugan for real.
«At first she thought I was messing up the scene, then it dawned on her and she started crying and everyone was clapping. It was awesome,» Russo told the Daily News.
Some of the show’s famous props went home with the lead actors.
In 2014, Bays and Thomas told Yahoo News that some of the show’s iconic props ended up going home with the stars after the series ended.
Harris took Barney’s Playbook and the tabletop from their booth at McLaren’s, Smulders kept Robin Sparkles’ bedazzled jean jacket, Alyson Hannigan ended up with a little red British phone booth, and Radnor got to keep Ted’s coveted blue French horn.
Bays also ended up decorating his own home with the two swords that were hanging up in Ted and Marshall’s apartment, and Thomas ended up taking a few set pieces from McLaren’s, including one of the gang’s red booths.
