How I Met Your Mother’s Alternate Ending Explained

How I Met Your Mother featured a controversial ending, but an alternate ending was also created. Here’s how it changed the fate of several characters.

How I Met Your Mother had two different endings for the series, and the one that was chosen ended up being mighty controversial. The series, created by Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, ran for 208 episodes over the course of nine seasons. It followed Ted Mosby, a man who chronicled his life as a hopeless romantic, which led up to meeting the mother of his children. Here’s a breakdown of the other How I Met Your Mother ending and why it would have been better received.

The How I Met Your Mother series finale, «Last Forever», was split into two parts when it aired in March 2014. It featured a mix of flashbacks and future sequences detailing the final big moments in the lives of Ted, Marshall, Lily, Robin, and Barney. Of course, it also heavily focused on Ted’s milestone moments with the «Mother,» Tracy. By part 2 of the series finale, Robin and Barney were divorced, Marshall and Lily had a third child, and Ted became a father. Barney soon joined the parent club after the birth of his daughter. Ted and Tracy finally got married while Robin reconciled with the group. Lily memorably toasted Ted and his journey in finding Tracy before it was revealed that the love of his life passed away in 2024. After finishing the story, Ted’s kids realized their father was still in love with Robin, so they encourage him to go after her, which he did successfully.

How I Met Your Mother‘s alternate ending follows much of the same path as the broadcast version up until Lily’s toast to Ted. The different ending was included in the How I Met Your Mother season 9 and complete series DVD box sets but leaked online a few months after the series finale aired. Rather than present the 2030 storyline with Future Ted, narrator Bob Saget recalled the sequence of events leading up to Ted meeting Tracy, which he described as an «easy» journey. It used a montage of moments from previous episodes without any new footage. Following the voiceover, the How I Met Your Mother credits rolled, drastically changing the fates of Ted, Tracy, and Robin.

HIMYM’s Alternate Ending Featured The Happier Outcome

The How I Met Your Mother alternate ending notably left out any indication that Tracy suffered from a terminal illness. It’s insinuated that she could have fallen sick but recovered at some point due to previous hints. Considering it wasn’t stated directly, Tracy was still alive in the alternate ending. Tracy’s death resulted in a lot of criticism, so it was no surprise that fans welcomed this version of the ending. Ted and Tracy presumably lived a long and happy life together which gave fans a pleasant conclusion.

Aside from Tracy’s fate, the alternate ending also heavily changed what happened to Robin. Since Tracy lived in this version, Ted wasn’t a widow, so there was no reason for him to reunite with Robin on a romantic level. It’s possible that she and Barney got back together when their lives settled down in the future. Even though the unaired ending of How I Met Your Mother might have seemed more fitting for the bigger picture, the creators felt justified in pointing Ted back in Robin’s direction. She may not have been the «Mother» but it was always clear that Robin always held a place in Ted’s heart.

‘How I Met Your Mother’ Season 9 DVD to Feature Alternate ‘Happy’ Ending

It’s understandable though; has always packed an emotional punch. But the finale’s wallop made some feel more like suckers. Audiences spent 9 seasons watching Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) grow up and out of his childish fantasies to find the woman he was really meant for only to have her die from some unnamed illness so that, year’s later, Ted could regress back to his 20s and end up with Robin (Cobie Smulders). Nevertheless, it appears there’s a bit of light on the horizon.

According to a report over at Deadline, the Season 9 DVD set will include an alternate «happy» ending. Creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas had apparently contemplated a different conclusion during the run which will make its way onto the DVD as an extra. The adjusted end won’t involve any additional footage, but will instead work everything they’d shot into a different turnout. Producers and 20th Century Fox TV declined to comment on any specifics but the source described this alternate conclusion as a «happy ending.»

For some, and depending on what is actually in the alternative ending, this move could be seen as a total cop-out. Bays and Thomas went with the plot they had in mind since the beginning of the show, even going so far as to shoot the scenes of Ted’s kids telling him to go for it with Robin way back in Season 2. Yet, what they didn’t anticipate was how much audiences would love Cristin Milioti as Tracey, how funny she would be and how well she’d meshed with the rest of the cast (especially Ted). They also didn’t appreciate how long fans have been waiting for Ted to get over his childish obsession with Robin. As a result, it might have been better to embrace the Radnor/Milioti chemistry and change the ending altogether.

EXCLUSIVE: Four days after the How I Met Your Mother series finale, fans of the show are still reeling from the controversial ending that saw the mother die, Robin and Barney divorce and Ted end up with Robin, leaving viewers stunned. Reaction has been overwhelming, with the HIMYM finale dividing fans and instantly becoming one of the most debated series closers ever, with fans starting a petition to have the ending changed. They may get their wish.

I have learned that the controversial sequence was not the only conclusion the HIMYM writers considered. I hear creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas also contemplated an alternate ending, which will be included in HIMYM‘s upcoming DVD set. I hear the alternate ending does not involve additional footage but rather a different editing of the episode. HIMYM producers and studio 20th Century Fox TV would not comment on any specifics of the alternate closing, but a source described it as a “happy ending.” UPDATE : Bays confirmed our news on Twitter. “16 days ago today we were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings. We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series. We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too. We’re going to include that version on the Complete Series DVD as an alternate finale to How I Met Your Mother.”

Based on what we saw in the existing finale, it could only be re-cut in a couple of ways. If the producers don’t keep the story of Ted hooking up with Robin, the alternatives are for Ted to stay with the mother or end up alone. A fan-made montage circulated on the web this week edited the episode to create an alternate ending, in which Ted sees the yellow umbrella, meets Tracy McConnell, a train whizzes by and the screen fades to black to voice-over, “and that, kids, is how I met your mother.” The video went viral before 20th TV shut it down over rights issues. If Bays and Thomas’ alternate ending is “happier” than the current one, one could assume that it involves the mother staying alive and in Ted’s life, maybe in the vein of what the fan suggested.

Bays and Thomas went with the ending they had been plotting since the beginning as the scene in the finale with Ted’s kids who encourage him to go after Aunt Robin following their mother’s death was filmed back in Season 2. It is understandable that they would have had second thoughts 7 1/2 years later. Back in Season 2, the Tracy character was just an outline on a page while Robin felt like the love of Ted’s life, despite being ruled out as the mother in the pilot episode. But as she was introduced in last year’s finale, Tracy came to life. Over the past season, fans got to know her and got invested in her and Ted ending up together. Ultimately, the original plan prevailed. Now we’ll get to see the alternative.

8 reasons why How I Met Your Mother should’ve used its alternative ending

It’s fair to say that How I Met Your Mother fans were left a little bit underwhelmed when the sitcom’s finale first aired.

However, ahead of the ninth season DVD release, an alternate ending was leaked on to the internet and it’s certainly provided the kind of resolution that we all hoped to see:

Many have commented that this is the final moment that the sitcom deserved and that it should have been used in the show’s finale.

Here’s why we couldn’t agree more:

1. It may be simple, but at least it didn’t shock for all the wrong reasons

The alternative ending may be more predictable than the one that made the final cut, but at least it didn’t leave viewers in a rage…

2. Would Ted and Robin really work as a couple again?

Ted and Robin didn’t work out before, so would they end up living happily ever after if they started dating again?

Even though Robin played a huge part in Ted’s life, Tracy was the one that he was waiting for for all these years and it’s much more satisfying for them to have a happy ending.

3. It makes Robin more likeable

As Robin drifted away from the gang, she had a huge change in character in the finale.

She wasn’t very likeable as she showed more concern for her career than being there for her friends. While it’s realistic that friendships can fade over time, the alternate ending finished nicely with Robin reconnecting with the group at Ted’s wedding.

4. The knowing glance between Robin and Barney

The alternative ending features Robin and Barney sharing a look as Ted’s voiceover says ‘things get put back together.’ While it hints that Robin and Barney could reunite, it lets the viewer decide their fate – much to the relief of their shippers.

5. Cristin Milioti got what she deserved

Milioti was perfect as the mother and many were left disappointed that her character died in a very short scene with just a voiceover in the original cut of How I Met Your Mother.

The alternative ending gave Tracy the happy ending that Cristin Milioti, the characters and the viewers were worthy of.

6. It playfully mocked the show’s concept

Despite spending such a long time telling his story, Ted quickly recounts the major events that occurred over nine years in the alternative ending. It added a little humour to the final moments, mocking the fact that the show had been on for so long.

7. The montage showed how desperately Ted wanted to meet the mother

Even though Ted’s been desperate to meet ‘the one’ since the pilot episode, his tone during the montage suggests that he’d do it all over again for Tracy.

8. It actually ended with Ted meeting Tracy

It’s nice that the alternative ending finished with Ted finally meeting the mother.

We’d already seen moments from Ted and Tracy’s future but none were filled with as much chemistry as the yellow umbrella scene, which proved that the pair were as dorky as each other.
