Small Talk: How was your weekend?

In Small Talk: What are your plans for the weekend, we looked at examples of how to ask about someone’s plans for the weekend and also how to respond.

Now, let’s look at common questions people ask on a Monday or Tuesday and their reduced forms, which is how they sound when spoken at a normal speed by fluent English speakers.

How was your weekend? sounds like Howuzyer weekend?

What did you do? sounds like Wuhdja do?

Below is an example of a natural greeting on a Monday between two acquaintances passing in a hallway.

acquaintance: a person you have met but do not know well

Ollie: Hey, how was your weekend?

Elsa: Hey, not bad. Yours?

Ollie: Not bad. See you.

Elsa: Yeah, take it easy.

If they have more time to chat, they might say:

Ollie: How was your weekend?

Elsa: Not bad. Yours?

Ollie: Not bad. What did you do?

Elsa: I just hung out at home. What did you do?

Ollie: Not much. Mostly took it easy.

This small talk only consists of polite conversation and a quick greeting.

Usually, people do not give specific details during small talk. If you stayed home and slept a lot, you can say one of the following if you want to sound natural:

I just relaxed.

I just took it easy.

I just hung out at home.

All three are natural ways of saying that you stayed home and didn’t do anything significant.

significant: important, meaningful, or special

When talking with friends or trying to get to know someone, we usually give more details. What we share depends on our level of comfort and closeness. However, it is important to give more specific details if we want to keep our conversations going.

*A common mistake is to say I played with my friends. Unless you are a child, this sounds strange. It’s okay to say I played soccer with my friends. or I played League of Legends with my friends. or I played chess with my friends. However, the correct way to say that you spent time relaxing or enjoying yourself with your friends is I hung out with my friends.

hang out: spend time relaxing or enjoying oneself

Everyone loves the weekend. Weekends are a huge topic of conversation. Starting on Wednesday or Thursday, people will ask you about your weekend plans. When you return to work or school, you’ll be asked how your weekend went. So it’s helpful to have a nice range of phrases to use for these conversations.

The upcoming weekend

If you want to ask someone about the upcoming weekend in English, here are some common questions:

What are you doing this weekend?

Do you have anything going on this weekend?

Do you have any big plans for the weekend?

Do you have anything planned for this weekend?

If you have plans, you can tell people about them:

I’m driving to Baltimore with a friend.

Francine and I are taking the kids to the zoo.

If you don’t have any plans, here are some good phrases:

I’ll probably just stay at home and relax.

Of course, you might not want to know about other people’s weekend plans. In that case, just wish them a happy weekend:

The weekend past

After the weekend is over, you can ask about it with these expressions:

Did you do anything fun over the weekend?

What did you get up to this weekend?

Here are some answers:

I went out with some friends on Saturday.

I just puttered around the house.

I had a pretty uneventful weekend.

Things to do on the weekend

Here are some of the activities that people like to do on the weekend:

Bonus: Which weekend do you mean?

One difficult part of conversations about the weekend is knowing which weekend you mean. Here are some example sentences to help you figure out what «last weekend», «this weekend», and «next weekend» mean, depending on when you say them:

Monday- Tuesday

Last weekend I (did something).

8-10 days earlier

This weekend I (did something).

1-3 days earlier

This weekend I’m (doing something).

Next weekend I’m (doing something).

Wednesday-Friday

Last weekend I (did something).

4-5 days earlier (Probably)

This weekend I (did something).

(This would be confusing.)

This weekend I’m (doing something).

Next weekend I’m (doing something).

Saturday-Sunday

Last weekend I (did something).

6-8 days earlier (probably)

This weekend I (did something).

Yesterday or today (probably)

This weekend I’m (doing something).

Yesterday, today, or tomorrow

Next weekend I’m (doing something).

Thank u soo much I like the way u explain XD

Emma, I would like to make a remark pertaining to the sixth question. The question says “What does it mean to run errands?”. The correct answer was “To do the tasks outside of the house”. What caught my interest was something your good-looking sister Audra mentioned. She said “I do have some errands to do when I get home, I will be doing laundry”. Isn’t that the task that is performed inside the house? I look forward to getting clarification from you. Thank you in advance.

Emma, thank you for your lesson. I always enjoy your video to learn some words, sentences and so on in English. In the latter half, there is the conversation lessen. It is a little bit difficult for me because of natural speed talking. I thought I needed to improve listening skill. Anyway I am looking forward to meeting with you next lesson. As I forget the contents, I will see this lesson repeatedly.

Thanks Emma for your class. Good idea to bring your sister.
