Donald Trump and Joe Biden have fought a long battle for the heart of the US today, in an astonishingly close battle which fell outside poll predictions. Several states still need to call their results, and Mr Biden has a temporary lead, but this could soon vanish and give Mr Trump another term. He is now turning to discredit the results cast, setting a concerning precedent for the days to come.

How long can you be President of the United States?

The US president’s job depends on the US Constitution, which sets term limits.

But the legislature has shifted the founding document over the last few centuries, changing the commander-in-chief’s role.

As such, some president’s have served longer than the traditional limit before Washington DC introduced changes.

The first US president, George Washington, established a two-term «tradition» on his election in 1789.

Congress drafted this tradition into law in 1947, following the unusual presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The wartime president came to power in 1933, and retained his term during the following 1936 election.

He announced an unprecedented bid for a third term in 1940, and won, allowing him to serve again until 1944.

President term limits: Presidents who have served for only one term (Image: EXPRESS)

Mr Roosevelt served a final fourth term in 1944, but didn’t manage to serve the entire incumbency.

He died of an intracerebral haemorrhage in April 1945, and left behind demand for a legislative term limiter.

Congress then passed the 22nd amendment on March 21, 1947, which they ratified by 1951.

Presidents can serve longer than the capped eight-year duration in set circumstances, however.

In theory, it is possible for a president to serve 10, rather than eight years.

If one incumbent died, resigned or was impeached with two years left in their term, the vice would take over.

They would then serve the remainder and also become eligible to run for president in the following years.

If picked up by their respective party committee’s they could run for two terms.

In total, this would give them up to 10 years in office.

The 22nd amendment exists as a valuable check on the president’s power, but it may not always stay in play.

Back in 1987, Mr Trump’s idol Robert Raegan said toyed with a «movement» to repeal the amendment.

Although he failed, the incumbent president has also expressed admiration for China, which has no term limits, and has led some experts to predict he may want to revive Mr Raegan’s movement.

Kudlow: This would really ‘stick it’ to Putin and Russia

FOX Business host gives his take on the U.S. response to Russia waging war on Ukraine on ‘Kudlow.’

Under a series of constitutional amendments passed in 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin, 69, can serve as the country’s president until 2036 when he is 83 years old.

Russian law limits presidential terms to two consecutive six-year periods.

Previously, Russian presidents could only serve two consecutive four-year terms, but that changed in 2008 and again in 2020.

President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin, meet in Geneva, Switzerland, June 16, 2021. | AP Newsroom

Putin was first elected as president in 2000 and was re-elected in 2004, 2012 and again in 2018. His current term ends in 2024, but the new amendments will allow him to stay in office for another 12 years rather than taking another six-year break.

Putin reportedly told lawmakers in 2021 that he did not support completely eliminating term limits, but he did support amending the constitution to reset the number of terms he could serve, NPR reported.

The amendments passed in 2020 also lifted the age limit for government leaders from 65 to 70 if they want to continue to serve, according to Reuters.

So far, Putin has served a total of 16 years — including a year-long acting term, two four-year terms and two six-year terms — in the country’s highest office.

When he was not serving as president, he took on the role of premier, allowing him to maintain some form of power for more than two decades — longer than any other Russian or Soviet leader since Josef Stalin, who led from 1924 until his death in 1953.

In 1999, Putin served as acting president for a year after former Russian President Boris Yeltsin unexpectedly resigned after eight years in office. Putin won the next election in 2000 with 53% support from the country’s popular voting system.

Putin served his first official four-year term as president from 2000 to 2004 and again from 2004 to 2008. Between 2008 and 2012, Putin served as premier, during which time Dmitry Medvedev, a longtime ally of Putin, served as president and extended the presidential term to six years.

In January of 2020, Putin unexpectedly reshuffled his inner circle, including the appointment of a new prime minister, and announced the constitutional reform to extend term limits.

If Putin decides he would rather retire in his old age, he can still receive 75 percent of the monthly salary for the president of Russia.

When is the next US presidential election?

America will either elect a new president or reelect Donald Trump for a second term in four years’ time.

The next US presidential election is scheduled for Tuesday November 3 2020.

What is the presidential term limit?

US presidents can only serve two terms in office, with each lasting four years.

The tradition began when the first ever president George Washington opted against running for a third term.

Although Mr Washington blamed his decision on his advancing age, many believe that he wished to set a precedent to stop other leaders from holding on to power for too long.

Several presidents have tried and failed to serve a third term including Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson.

Franklin Roosevelt successfully sought a third and fourth term but died a year after his last election victory.

Following his death, the 22nd Amendment was sworn into law enshrining the two-term limit.
