ABOUT MYSELF AND MY FAMILY
Let me introduce myself. My name is Olga Smirnova, Olya for short. I was called after my grandmother. I was born on the 12th of May, 1995 in Brest, and have been living there since my childhood. Now I am seventeen years old. This year I have finished school and entered the Grodno State Medical University. It was not easy to become a student, but I did all my best to do it. At school I was good at Chemistry and Biology, they were my favorite subjects. I was also interested in Physics and Languages. Now I am a student of the medical university, the Faculty of Pediatrics. I descend from the family of doctors. My parents and teachers at school advised me to become a doctor firstly to continue our family occupation, secondly because I have always given my preference to natural sciences. The life of a medical student is not easy; we have to study a lot. So I don’t have much time for my hobbies and interests. But when I have some free time I go swimming at the swimming pool and watch videos. I like sport very much. I go in for basketball and always take part in sports competitions at our university. I am also fond of reading interesting books. Among my favorite writers are Charles Dickens and Mark Twain. As for my character, my friends find me very energetic and cheerful. But my parents consider me absent-minded. I think I take after my grandmother in character; she is very optimistic and joyful. It is quite natural because we are family members. Now I’d like to tell you a few words about my family. My family is an average sized Belarusian family: it consists of my father, mother, elder brother and me. So we are a family of four. I’d like to start with my parents. I have got a father and a mother. Their names are Sergey Ivanovich and Marina Petrovna. My parents have been married for twenty-five years. This year we are celebrating their silver wedding. My father is 49 years old, he is a man of character. He is a very handsome, sporty, tall man with fair hair and green eyes. People say I take after my father in appearance. As for his character, he is very serious and reliable. He is always ready to help everyone: both the family and his patients. He works as a surgeon in the regional hospital. In his free time he likes fishing and hunting. I love my father very much.
My mother is 2 years younger than my father. She is in her late forties but she looks young for her age. My mother is a pretty, slender woman of medium height. She has long brown hair and blue eyes. My mother is a very kind and caring woman, she is always very busy with her work and has a lot to do about the house. But all family members try to help her. My mother works in the children’s hospital, she is a pediatrician. I want to treat children as well. My parents have much in common, but they have different interests, hobbies, points of view on sports and music. For example, my father is fond of sports and my mother doesn’t go in for sport at all. She is a great home-sitter. She keeps the house and takes care of the family. She is very good at cooking and she is clever with her hands. But my parents have the same opinion about the education and upbringing of their children. They are good specialists as well. Both of them are real medical professionals. Now I’m going to tell you a couple of words about other members of our family. Besides me, my parents have got one more child. It is my elder brother. His name is Oleg. He is twenty-three. He is married and has a family of his own. His wife is a teacher. Oleg has graduated from the university and works as an economist. We have much in common with my brother but we are quite different as well. My brother is fond of exact sciences and I am good at natural sciences. But we both like sport and books. We are happy to have grandparents. They are old now and live in the country near Brest. But we never forget to visit them regularly and help them about the house. We also have a lot of relatives. My aunts, uncles and cousins live far from us, in different cities of Belarus. On big holidays they come to visit us and we have a very good time together. So we are a happy family and we are getting on well together. Our family is very united. We help each other in difficult situations and discuss all family problems together. We like to spend our free time together and organize family celebrations. I am not married yet, but I would like to have similar relationships in the family of my own.
I have an average family that consists of 4 people. My mother is 47 years old. She works as a seller of children’s goods. She is very beautiful, kind and the most irreplaceable. She is not very tall, has green eyes and short red hair. My father is 42 years old. He works as a home appliance salesman. He’s not very tall either, with blue eyes and dark hair. He is a support for me and always cares about me. I am 19 years old, I am a student of the correspondence department and also work as an accountant. I have a younger sister named Yana. She is 9 years old and goes to school. She loves to go out and spend time with her friends. Our family is very friendly. We help each other in difficult situations and discuss all family problems together. We like to spend our free time together and organize family celebrations. I am not married yet, but I would like to have a similar relationship in my family.

How many people are (there) in your family?
I wonder if we need the word there in these questions:
How many people are (there) in your family?
How many apples are (there) in the fridge?
I think that there is like a subject because the answers of this type of question is There is/ are______. Is it true? Is it necessary to put there in the questions?
1 Answer 1
Let’s look at them without the «there»:
How many people are in your family?
How many apples are in the fridge?
These are completely fine.
Technically, you would answer «How many are there?» with «There are X number of things», and you would answer «How many are?» (which is incomplete by the way, you need something like «in your family» or «in the fridge» with it) with «X number of things are. «. So, if you just replace the question word with the answer word, you get:
How many people are there in your family?
There are six people in my family.
How many apples are in the fridge?
Six apples are in the fridge.
However, it is also completely fine to say «Six people are in family.» and «There are six apples in the fridge.» (The «there are. » version sounds better to me in most cases, although I would probably answer with just «Six.») Both questions are commonly used, and both answers are correct.
12 Typical Types Of Family Members (How Many Are Familiar To You?)
Jay writes about communication and happiness on Lifehack. Read full profile
Every family is unique. At the same time, the same types tend to come up again and again in each clan! When you think of your closest relatives, how many of the following character types do you recognize?
The Caretaker
Every family needs at least one caretaker. This is the person who puts everyone else’s needs before their own and always wants to know how you are, how work is going, and whether you need any help during rough times. The caretaker brings you soup when you are sick, and is happy to listen to the story of your latest relationship drama.
The Controller
Controllers always have an opinion and they like everything their way, from the dinner menu to the family’s vacation destination. They might be annoying on occasion, but they tend to be excellent planners too! A controller is in their element when given free rein to organize large family events.
The Peacemaker
All families have arguments from time to time, and this is where the peacemaker’s role comes in. They are the one who tactfully separates the two warring relatives, or makes just the right remark to lighten the mood. They dislike seeing family harmony broken, and believe it is better to be happy than to be right.
The Mess Maker
Some people just can’t help being really messy. Mess makers somehow manage to get into your living room, make themselves at home, and leave it a few hours later looking like a pile of rubbish. If you live with a mess maker, you have to accept early on that your home will never be spotless again. Unfortunately, they barely seem to realize what they are doing!
The Quiet One
Do you have a relative who never quite lets you know what they are thinking? Perhaps they like to keep their thoughts to themselves, or just feel shy in social settings. Occasionally, quiet relatives can let loose if you set them talking on a favorite subject or hot-button issue, but for the most part they remain reserved or even aloof.
The Clown
It’s usually obvious who plays the role of family clown. This person is always joking around, and doesn’t mind making other people laugh, even if it’s at their own expense. They always have a funny story to tell and really excel at seeing even serious situations from a new, less intense angle. Clowns are often good at entertaining younger members of the family too.
The Sarcastic One
Some people never quite get over their teenage sarcasm phase, and drop snarky remarks into conversation every chance they get. This doesn’t always go down too well with the more polite or quieter members of the family. However, a wittily sarcastic relative can liven up any gathering. As long as there is a peacemaker or clown nearby, your most sarcastic relatives shouldn’t cause too much damage.
The Connector
A connector knows everything about everyone. If you need any family news, they are the person to call. A classic connector is the aunt or grandmother who can spend hours on the phone talking about family gossip. They are also good at encouraging relatives to meet up, even if it’s been some time since the last gathering.
The Loudspeaker
A loudspeaker never shuts up – or at least, it can feel that way! They tend to be opinionated, noisy, and want to make sure that everyone knows exactly what they think. Loudspeakers can become irritating, but they are often fun, extraverted people who know how to have a good time. In between voicing their own thoughts (regularly and with much noise), they tend to have a real interest in other people.
The Chef
Who is your family chef? This type is always trying out new recipes, and pushing food on other people. If you are lucky, they are a great cook. If you aren’t, you’re in for years of trying to avoid their more “interesting” and “experimental” food combinations.
The Human Dustbin
Every family seems to have at least one person who is renowned for their eating abilities. It could be your sister who can put away six servings at dinner, or your uncle who is always clearing up leftovers from everyone else’s plates. They make sure they always do their part to reduce food waste.
The Lazy One
You know that cousin who will happily lie around all day on the sofa, occasionally getting up in search of food? It’s quite incredible just how happy certain relatives are to remain inert for hours at a time. No family would be complete without at least one member who is amazingly good at doing precisely nothing.

I am very busy on my week-days. On week-days my working day begins early in the morning. My school starts at 8 o’clock, so I get up at 7, to be ready in time. Sometimes I do my morning exercises, then I go to the bathroom. I clean my teeth, wash my face. Then I go back to my room, make my bed. I switch on my radio, usually I listen to radio. I dress, comb my hair, put a little make-up. By that time my breakfast is ready (my mother cooks it for me). At 7.45 I take my bag and go to my school. My school starts at 8 o’clock and I don’t like to be late. Usually I have six or seven lessons a day, it lasts till 3 o’clock. After each lesson there is a break, so I chat with my friends or eat my sandwich. When school is over I go home. First of all I walk my dog. Then I have my dinner and rest. The teachers give us a lot of homework, so I start doing it about 4.30 or 5.00 p.m. My parents get home about six o’clock. We watch TV, have supper together. After it, I help my mother to do some work about the house — wash dishes, sweep the floor, clean the room. Twice a week in evenings I go to play tennis. When I do not go to play tennis, I stay at home and watch TV, listen to the music, read magazines. Sometimes my friends call me and we go for a walk. At eleven o’clock I go to bed and fall asleep.
