Russia Population Review

Russia, which is also known as the Russian Federation, is located in Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. It is the world’s largest country landmass and covers 17.1 million square miles, making it 7.2 million square miles larger than the second-largest country, Canada. It stretches across 11 time zones and shares a land border with 14 different countries. It is home to over 145 million people but, due to the country’s size, is sparsely populated. Overall, Russia has a population density of 9 people per square kilometer, making it one of the least densely populated countries in the world.

An urban-based population, with a twist

Due to its northern location, much of Russia’s weather is harsh and unrelenting. This makes it difficult to farm and maintain a consistent flow of supplies. For this reason, over 73% of the population choose to live in urban areas. Russia’s largest cities, Moscow and St. Petersburg, have over 17 million residents between them. However, recent studies have shown that Russia may be emptying from within, with more of the population choosing to “de-urbanize” and move to the countryside. The first wave of this was noticed in the early 2000s as urban populations dipped in favor of rural living. While the trend towards urbanization continues to rise, the increase has plateaued much more than it did in the 1960s and 70s.

There is also a huge trend towards seasonal deurbanization in Russia. It’s long been a common tradition in Russia for families to maintain a dacha—a simple, country home—alongside their home in the city. Russian families may decamp to their dacha in the warmer months where they may keep a garden an a few goats. The maintenance of these dachas has created a secondary type of suburbanization/deurbanization that has slowed the typical deurbanization seen in developing countries.

A dropping growth rate

Even when Russia recovers from the war echo, it faces what many developed countries now face: a low birth rate. There is currently no developed country in the world where families are, on average, having two of more children. Because of this, citizen-based population growth in developed countries has simply stopped.

A plan to attract immigrants

President Vladimir Putin has put into place plans to increase the amount of Russian-speaking migrants to help offset the country’s declining population. The goal of this plan is to attract up to 10 million migrants between 2019 and 2025. While Russia did see some promising figures in 2019, with 98,000 migrants recorded in the country, this was seen as an anomaly. Currently, the majority of Russia’s immigrants come from neighbouring countries like Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Tajikistan. Unfortunately, even if this plan succeeded, the fast that 17 to 20% of Russians are seeking to permanently move to another country could hinder the country’s plan to bolster their shrinking population.

Between 1993 and 2008, Russia’s population saw a considerable decline in its population from 148.37 million to 143.25. During this time, Russia experienced low birth rates and abnormally high death rates. Since then, the population has increased again to 145.93 million; however, the population is expected to reach its peak at the end of 2020 and is projected to start declining again.

Russia has one of the lowest fertility rates in the world of 1.58 births per woman, which is also below the replacement rate of 2.1 births per woman. Russia also has one of the oldest populations in the world with an average age of 40.3 years. Further contributing to Russia’s population decline is a low level of immigration.

While projections into the future of Russia are very difficult, it’s estimated that Russia will fall from the 9th most populous country to 17th by 2050. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has announced that he plans to boost Russia’s dwindling population by encouraging immigration and higher birth rates, but estimates show that Russia’s population will drop from 2014’s 142 million to only 128 million by 2050.

Russia Population Growth

The Russian economy grew strongly during the first decade of the 20th century, and in 2009 the Russian population saw a small but significant increase. The increase was reported as between 15,000 and 25,000 people and was attributed to a falling death rate and increasing migration.

Population growth and demographics have long been a problem for Russia, as a decade ago the nation was losing 1 million people a year, and many doubt Vladimir Putin’s plans will work. Time will tell if Russia is able to overcome its issues and see greater growth, as otherwise it will be prone to collapsing infrastructure with its massive land area and untapped natural resources.

Russia Population Projections

The rate of change of the Russian population is very close to 0% at present and the population isn’t expected to change much by 2020. Further in the future, it is expected that the population will continue to decline slowly, getting down to 140 million by 2030, and 136 million by 2040.

Population change rates in 2022

According to our estimations, daily change rates of Russian Federation population in 2022 will be the following:

Demographics of Russian Federation 2021

As of 1 January 2022, the population of Russian Federation was estimated to be 146,023,195 people. This is an increase of 0.04 % (59,845 people) compared to population of 145,963,350 the year before. In 2021 the natural increase was negative, as the number of deaths exceeded the number of live births by 167,858. Due to external migration, the population increased by 227,703.The reason of additional increase of more than 2 millions people in 2014 is that Crimea has become de-facto a part of Russia. A census was held in Crimea during October 2014. Official results are not yet available but we can estimate the population of 2 294 110 in Crimea as of 1 of January 2015. This estimation based on preliminary census data, published by Statistical Department of Russia How many people live in russia. Смотреть фото How many people live in russia. Below are the key figures for Russian Federation population in 2021:

Russian Federation population density

Russian Federation population density is 8.5 people per square kilometer (22.1/mi 2 ) as of August 2022. Density of population is calculated as permanently settled population of Russian Federation divided by total area of the country. Total area is the sum of land and water areas within international boundaries and coastlines of Russian Federation. The total area of Russian Federation is 17,125,426 km 2 (6,612,165 mi 2 ) according to the United Nations Statistics Division How many people live in russia. Russian Federation age structure

As of the beginning of 2022 according to our estimates Russian Federation had the following population age distribution:

15.271.813

— percentage of population under 15
— percentage of population between 15 and 64 years old
— percentage of population 65+

In absolute figures (estimate):

We prepared a simplified model of the population distribution pyramid which is broken down into 3 main age groups. The groups are the same as we used above: population under 15, between 15 and 64 and population which is over 65 year old.

65+
15-64
0-14
malefemale

Note: The pyramid provided is not corresponding to data given above because the age groups have different number of years.

As we can see the Russian Federation population pyramid has a contracting type. This type of pyramid is more common for highly developed countries with low birth and death rates. Usually countries with such kind of population age distribution model have long life expectancy, high level of education and good health care.

Age dependency ratio

Dependency ratio of population is a ratio of people who are generally not in the labor force (the dependents) to workforce of a country (the productive part of population). The dependent part includes the population under 15 years old and people aged 65 and over. The productive part of population accordingly consists of population between 15 and 64 years.

This ratio shows the pressure on productive population produced by the dependent part of population.

The total dependency ratio of population in Russian Federation is 39.3 %.

The value of 39.3 % is relatively low. It shows that the dependent part of population is less than a half of the working part. In other words the working population (labor force) in Russian Federation must provide goods for itself and cover expenditure on children and aged persons. And this part of population is less than 50% of working population. The value of less than 50% means that the pressure on productive population in Russian Federation is relatively low.

Child dependency ratio

Child dependency ratio is a ratio of people below working age (under 15) to workforce of a country.

Child dependency ratio in Russian Federation is 21.2 %.

Aged dependency ratio

Aged dependency ratio is a ratio of people above working age (65+) to workforce of a country.

Aged dependency ratio in Russian Federation is 18.1 %.

Life expectancy

Life expectancy at birth is one of the most important demographic indicator. It shows the number of years a newborn infant would live assuming that birth and death rates will remain at the same level during the whole lifetime.

Total life expectancy (both sexes) at birth for Russian Federation is 66.3 years.
This is below the average life expectancy at birth of the global population which is about 71 years (according to Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations). Фото How many people live in russia

Male life expectancy at birth is 59.8 years.
Female life expectancy at birth is 73.2 years.

Literacy of population

According to our estimates 123,496,565 persons or 99.72% of adult population (aged 15 years and above) in Russian Federation are able to read and write. Accordingly about 345,707 adults are illiterate.

Literacy rate for adult male population is 99.73% (55,565,061 persons). 151,549 are illiterate.
Literacy rate for adult female population is 99.72% (67,931,504 persons). 194,158 are illiterate.

Youth literacy rates are 99.66% and 99.75% for males and females accordingly. The overall youth literacy rate is 99.7%. Youth literacy rate definition covers the population between the ages of 15 to 24 years.
