To answer this question, we will tell for a start that people identify themselves, that is consider itself belonging to a certain group. All achievements of group as a whole can be considered then as own achievements of an individual, and he acquires the right them to be proud.
For example, the boy can quarrel with other boy and shout: «My big brother will beat your big brother!» Thus it isn’t so sure that itself is capable to beat the offender. However, being sure that his brother can beat the brother of other boy, he has some satisfaction from understanding of this fact, rises in own estimation.
In the same way children unite in the company, convinced that «our company can beat yours». Maturing, boys become also fans of any soccer team. Victories of the team will be big events for them, and defeats will turn back the present tragedies.
That group from which you identify yourselves, better, than other groups that your family is better, than family of the neighbor is very seductive to believe; your party is better, than a party on the following street; the soccer team of your city is better, than team of other city.
