Letters In the Mail
As a rule, almost all like to receive mail, and probably nobody in the whole town of Stillwater liked to get letters in the mail more than Ray Buffin. But the fact was that Ray received fewer letters in his box at the post-office than anybody else.
When two of the younger men in town, Guy Hodge and Ralph Barnhill who were always thinking up pranks to play on people, saw one afternoon in the post-office with what hope Ray Buffin waited for mail, they decided that they would send him a letter signed with a fictitious name. Their pranks were never bad, Guy and Ralph did not mean to make people unhappy.
They planned that they would tell everybody in the post-office to watch Ray when he received a letter in his box. Then somebody would ask him loudly if he had received a love letter from a girl. After that somebody would snatch the letter out of his hand and would read it aloud for everyone to hear.
They bought a box of pink stationary and went around the corner to the telephone station, where Grace Brooks was the night operator.
Gracie was a fair-haired girl, nice and pleasant. She had worked for the telephone company since she graduated from school several years ago. She remained unmarried all those years, and because she lived such an unusual life, working all night and sleeping during the day, she understood that there was little hope for her to meet somebody who would be ready to marry her.
At first, after Guy and Ralph had told her what they were planning to do and had asked her to write the letter to Ray, because they wanted it to be in feminine handwriting, Gracie said that she would never do it, as she did not want to take part in such things.
“But it’s only a joke, Gracie,” Ralph tried to explain, “everybody likes a small prank sometimes.”
“No, it’s too cruel,” she protested.
“But, Gracie, be a good girl and write the letter for us,” Ralph asked. “We’ll never tell Ray or anybody else that you wrote it.”
Suddenly Gracie turned away as she did not want them to see her eyes, full of tears. She remembered the day when she had received a letter from Ray Buffin saying that he liked her more than any other girl in the world and wanted to marry her.
That was long ago. She had just graduated from school then and had started to work for the telephone company, and as she had no plans about marrying at such a young age she ignored the letter. During all those years they had seen each other sometimes, and each time she saw ray he looked sadder and more lonely. There were moments when she wanted to run to Ray and ask him not to be angry with her for not answering his letter. If she had answered his letter, he probably would have married her and they would not be lonely all those years.
“Please, Gracie,” Guy Hodge asked her. “Write the letter for us. If you don’t, we’ll have to go and find somebody else to write it.”
“No,” she said quickly. “Don’t do that! I want to write it.”
“That’s all right,” Ralph said. “I knew you would like a good prank. Now, let’s see what you’ll have to write in it.”
“I think I know what I’ll have to say in it,” she told them. “Leave the box of stationary. I’ll write the letter tonight and post it early tomorrow morning.”
After they left, Gracie cried for a long time. Later that night she wrote the letter to Ray Buffin, and the next morning she put the letter in the letter-box in the post-office.
Guy Hodge and Ralph were waiting in the post-office that afternoon at four o’clock when Ray came in and stood in front of his that time many people had gathered in the post-office because everybody knew about the prank. They looked at one another, smiled, waited.
When Ray saw the letter in his box, he could not believe his eyes. He stood looking at it through the little glass window for a long time. After that, with shaking hand he opened the box and took out the pink envelope. Turning it over in his hands, he went to the corner of the room to read it.
As he began to read, his face became bright and he began to smile. After reading the letter the first time, he began to read it a second time. When he finished, he left the post-office before anybody had time to say something.
As soon as they understood what had happened, Guy and Ralph ran after him, calling to him to come back to the post-office. Instead, Ray went quickly around the corner to the telephone station. As a rule, Gracie Brooks came to work at six o’clock in the evening, but this time she had been there since four o’clock.
When Guy and Ralph ran inside, Gracie was sitting at the switchboard and Ray Buffin was standing in front of her with the happiest smile they had ever seen on his face.
It was clear that they hadn’t yet said a word to each other, and that they were too excited to see that Guy and Ralph were in the office watching them. The little red and green lights on the switchboard began flashing urgently but telephone calls remained unanswered and unconnected.

He has broken his leg. (He is in hospital now. ИЛИ He is not at work. He can’t work)
just (только что)
I’ve just cleaned the floor.
Have you done your homework yet?
I’ve already done my homework.
I haven’t finished yet.
(Past Simple)
Have you ever been to Japan? — Yes, I have. е.
How many times have you been there? — I’ve been there once.
Where and when did you go? — I went to Osaka last year.
many times (много раз)
three times (три раза)
How many times?
Этот случай распространяется не на все глаголы, а только на глаголы состояния (love, like, hate, see, hear, smell, have, know, understand, need и др.)
I have known her for 5 years.
How long have you lived in Moscow?
I, we, you, they — HAVE
he, she, it — HAS
HAVE/HAS + V-ed или III форма гл.
(Irregular Verbs).
I have been to Rome.
He has had lunch.
I have not been to Rome.
He has not had lunch.
Have you been to Rome?
Has he had lunch?
How many times have you been to Rome?
How many times has he been to Rome?
HAVE/HAS:
