How much do you know about weather and climate

How much do you know about weather and climate

How much do you know about weather and climate

You are going to give a talk about weather and seasons. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes.

Remember to say:

• which of the four seasons you like most, and why;

• how the Earth’s climate has changed recently;

• whether you trust the weather forecast, and why.

You have to talk continuously.

I would like to start with the idea that weather is a very popular topic. I think that the majority of people hate a winter season because it’s too cold. But I consider winter as the most gorgeous and beautiful time of the year because snow covers absolutely everything including big roofs and tall trees. As the result the view is fantastic. I enjoy walking on the streets in that time of the year. Nevertheless, I have all reasons to think that climate is rapidly changing. For example, winter has become shorter. I’m convinced that we should definitely do something to change the current situation. Speaking about weather forecasts, I would say that I trust them because they use scientific methods to determine the future weather. Of course, there is some inaccuracy. But most of the time predictions come true. In summary, I should say that climate is a very fragile system. We should not harm it.

Sam: Hi, Rachel! What are you doing here?

Rachel: Hi! I’ve been to my dad’s office. My mother asked me to give him some papers. And now I’m walking home.

Sam: What does your dad do?

Rachel: He is an accountant.

Sam: Mine is a musician, a violinist.

Rachel: Wow! It must be very exciting.

Sam: Yes, it certainly is. Dad loves music. He enjoys playing his violin. Sometimes he plays from early morning till evening when preparing for a concert.

Rachel: Goodness me! Does he have any time for hobbies?

Sam: Not a lot really. We play football every weekend through if he doesn’t perform. And what is your dad’s hobby?

Rachel: He likes fishing.

Sam: Fishing! For me it is a bit boring to sit there and wait for so long doing nothing.

Rachel: Actually he doesn’t seem to think so. It gives him relief from stress. Even it he catches no fish at all, it is much better than the time spent at home doing chores.

Sam: Sounds interesting! Maybe you are right.

A. American astronomer Edwin Hubble is famous for discovering the existence of other galaxies, as well as his important work of astrophysics and his invention of the most powerful Hubble Space Telescope. Hubble had a great influence on astronomy, and science in general, by showing that other galaxies besides our own Milky Way existed. People used to think that there was only Milky Way galaxy, Hubble’s discoveries which were announced in 1925 changed our view of the universe. An asteroid and a moon crater were also named after him.

B. Sir Isaak Newton is one of the most influential scientists of all time. He came up with numerous theories and ideas in many different fields such as physics, mathematics and philosophy. In 1687, Newton published the book Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica. In it he describes universal gravitation and the three laws of movement. Newton was known to have said that his work on developing a theory of gravitation was inspired by watching an apple fall from a tree. A story is well-known to this very day.

C. Stephen Hawking was one of the most famous scientists of modern times. He gave the world of science a lot of new ideas and theories. He helped to make science popular with general public by writing easy-to-read books such as A Brief History of Time. Hawking worked a lot on the subject of black holes, providing theories for their behaviour, including the idea that they emit radiation.

D. Galileo Galilei was an Italian scientist who helped open the eyes of the world to a new way of thinking about our solar system and astronomy in general. Among his inventions were telescopes, a compass and a thermometer. With his telescopes Galileo could observe the sky in absolutely new ways. He discovered Jupiter’s four largest satellite moons. The discovery of these moons was against scientific ideas of that time and it was difficult for Galileo to explain to some people that he had indeed discovered such objects.

E. Albert Einstein is perhaps the most famous scientist of all time. Both his image and brilliant work on theoretical physics live on today and he is an inspiration to young scientists around the world. Even when he was very young, Einstein showed great ability in both math and science. He was naturally curious and had a brilliant analytical mind. He is also well known for his theory of relativity. Einstein won the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on theoretical physics.

Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the past few years or you’ve just returned from Mars, you can’t have failed to notice just how much the news has been full of talk about climate change, global warming, floods, droughts, heat-waves and the weather in general.

So, how much do you really know about it? Do you know all about high pressure areas and the effects of the Jet Stream, or do you struggle to tell greenhouse gases from greenhouse glass? Here’s a quick quiz to test your knowledge.

The questions gradually get harder and there are some bonus points to be had for real brain-boxes – so it’s one for the whole family to try. Have fun – and good luck!

1. What is studying the climate called?

2. What is the Greenhouse Effect?

3. Why are people concerned about melting glaciers?

4. Which gas is blamed for causing so much trouble to the climate?

5. What shape is a snowflake?

6. Which of these winds is the STRONGEST?

7. Which is the WETTEST English county?

8. Which of the following is NOT a type of cloud?

9. What is the real difference between fog and mist?

10. Forecasters often talk about a “ridge of high pressure” – but what will it bring?

11. What is the science of weather called?

12. Some people use the word “anthropogenic” to describe climate change – but what does it mean?

Bonus Questions for Brain-boxes!

They’re a bit more complicated than just picking a, b or c – you’ll need to work out your own answers to these two!

13. What is the difference between climate and weather?

14. Why are sea levels expected to rise?

Answers

1. a – it’s called climatology.

2. b – The greenhouse effect is the warming caused when CO2 and other gases trap heat and stop it from being able to escape.

3. a – melting glaciers making the sea level rise, although the other two possibilities might be bad news for penguins and sports fans!

4. b – the big baddie of climate change is, of course, carbon dioxide.

5. a – snow consists of six-armed flakes and no two are ever exactly the same!

6. c – with wind speeds of between 64 and 72 mph, a violent storm is the strongest; a severe gale blows at 47–54 mph and while a strong breeze will make large branches sway, it only travels at 25–31 mph.

7. c – Cumbria; according to the Met Office, in 2009, three of the 10 wettest places in Britain were in Cumbria. Scotland had six of the others and, despite what you might have expected, only one – Capel Curig – was in Wales.

8. b – cartilaginous, which refers to cartilage, not clouds! Cirrus are those wispy white filaments high up in the sky, while cumulonimbus are the low, anvil-headed clouds that often bring thunderstorms.

9. a – the only difference is that fog contains more water droplets; when that means that you can’t see more than 1000 metres in front of you, a mist officially becomes fog.

10. b – Forecasters love their ridges of high pressure, largely because they often bring settled sunny weather to the British summer! High pressure isn’t always welcome though – in the winter it can mean frost and fog.

11. c – it’s meteorology, from the Greek “meteoron” – things going on in the sky. The word meteor to describe a shooting star shares the same origin.

12. b – anthropogenic means man-made; anthropogenic climate change refers to the effects that human activities have on the planet’s weather patterns.

13. Weather is what happens from day to day and hour to hour – the wind, rainfall, snow and temperature we experience. Climate is the general pattern of weather taken over a much longer time – the average weather we experience over the decades and centuries.

14. There are two reasons – one is that as water warms up, it expands (thermal expansion) and the other is that the water from melting glaciers and other areas of land-ice will flow into the sea, adding to the volume and making the level rise. If you got both of them, give yourself a bonus point for being a real brain-box!

The USA is a large country in North America. Its neighbour in the north is Canada and in the South its neighbour is Mexico. The country extends from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean to the islands of Hawaii in the Pacific, and from cold, snowy Alaska to sunny Florida in the southeast. The USA has nearly every kind of weather. Also, it has many kinds of land – wide grasslands, rocky mountains, powerful rivers, lakes of different sizes, sandy beaches, great forests and lands of ice and snow. The highest mountains are the Rocky Mountains and the longest river is the Mississippi. More than 300 million people live in the US but the country is very big, so there is still a lot of open space.

There are 50 states that make the USA. Some are small and some are big. The smallest is Rhode Island and the biggest is Alaska. The capital city is Washington, D.C. It lies on the banks of the Potomac River. The letters D.C. mean District of Columbia. Its territory doesn’t belong to any state. The US government and its Congress are situated there.

Every state has its capital. The largest city in the country is New York City famous for its skyscrapers.

Travelling is my favourite pastime. My parents and I travel a lot and visit different countries. We see them in winter and spring, summer and autumn; when it snows and when the sun shines, when it rains and when it is frosty. We don’t take heavy bags with us when we leave for some place but we always take a lot of pictures.

We buy different clothes for different seasons. In Russia we must have warm clothes for winter wear: coats or fur coats, thick jackets, hats. Scarves, boots, gloves and mittens. In spring we change into raincoats and thin jackets. In summer we like wearing light skirts and dresses, shorts and T-shirts of bright colours, trainers and sandals. English people say: “There is no bad weather, there are bad clothes.”

It’s very important to wear the right clothes to the right places. You will look wrong if you wear a suit to a disco or if you put on old jeans and a T-shirt to a good restaurant. Some people have a talent for choosing and wearing clothes. They always look wonderful in their trousers, skirts and dresses. Their clothes are not always fashionable but they are just right for them. The best thing is to have your style in clothes.

The United States is a young country. It is more than two hundred years old. Americans like new ideas. They built the first skyscrapers and they put the first man on the Moon. They like to be modern: to live in modern cities, in new houses, to have new cars. The people of the United States come from many different places in the world. In one city you can find people whose parents or great-grandparents came from Africa, Asia, South America, and every European country. These different people brought to their new land their traditions and their lifestyle.

The Hermitage is one of the most famous and oldest museums in the world. Now it is situated in six buildings four of which are open to the visitors. One of them is Winter Palace. It stands on the Bank of the Neva River. Its many statues make the building more beautiful. The Hermitage has got the world’s largest collection of paintings.

A lot of Russian cities have Kremlins. You can see them in Pskov, Novgorod, Tula, Smolensk and in many other places. But the Moscow Kremlin stands out from them.

People think that Moscow began in 1147. It was the year when Prince Yury Dolgoruky of Suzdal sent Prince Svyatoslav a letter. He wrote, “Come to me, my brother, to Moskovy.” In those days all the buildings were on the territory of the Kremlin. It stood high on the bank of the Moskva River. To defend Moscow from the enemies they built the first wooden wall around the Kremlin.

Red Square in the centre of Moscow is 695 metres long and 130 metres wide. It is one of the largest and most beautiful squares in Moscow. First the Moscow had the name Torg, or market place. Then after a big fire in 1493 people began to call it Pozhar. They called it Troitskaya Square too. In the 17 th century when people spoke about it, they said “krasnaya”, or beautiful, great. This was how the square got its modern name.

Everybody in Russia knows the famous buildings and monuments situated in Red Square: St Basil’s Cathedral, The History Museum, Spasskaya Tower with the large Kremlin Clock and some others. Tourists from different Russian towns and cities and from abroad come to Red Square to look at its historical buildings and monuments and to listen to the Kremlin Clock. A lot of young people come here on New Year’s Eve. On the 9 th of May, the Victory Day, a big parade takes place in Red Square.

Weather and climate are the words that we often use when we talk to each other. Sometimes we don’t understand that these are two different things. Weather is the state or conditions over a short period of time. Usually, it’s a day or so. Climate is the typical conditions that we expect at a certain place at a certain time. While weather changes day to day, climate does not change for a much longer period.

Now there are a lot of factors that influence weather and climate. Human activities are changing both in many ways. Global warming is an example of climate change. As for weather, it is becoming more and more difficult to predict it. People must put a lot of effort to improve the situation. The future of our planet is in our hands, we should do our best to save it.
