19 Listening Scripts END-OF-COURSE TEST Listening 1 Moira Barry Hello. And now it s time for Movie Review. So, Barry, what exciting films can we look forward to seeing this week? Well, my film of the week has to be Amazing Weekend. It s really funny and stars Jack White who, you may remember, played an astronaut in the sci-fi thriller Space Idiots. Anyway, in this film, he s an artist who meets an international tennis player while on holiday. They meet at a party, and, of course, they can t stand each other at first, but, hey, you know they re going to fall in love eventually. And that s what happens in the end in this great scene in Central Park. The tennis player, by the way, is played by the British actress who looks like Jolene Parton. Oh, I can t remember her name. Er Amanda Robbins. She s been acting in the States for ages and does a perfect American accent. And one great trivial fact for you. Although the story is set in York, it wasn t actually made there. It was all shot in Toronto in Canada, which is one of the most popular film locations for Hollywood movies these days. I bet you didn t know that. Anyway, that s my film of the week. Go and see it. END-OF-COURSE TEST Listening 2 1 Rose Colin 2 Dan Jo 3 Kath Jim Have you ever been injured while playing sport, Colin? Yes, I have. Actually, I ve played lots of games of football and rugby and never been hurt, but once I played handball with some friends and I managed to twist my knee. My hands were fine though, funnily enough. Which magazines and newspapers do you read regularly, Jo? Well, I m really into music, so I love reading about the latest CDs in Music World magazine, but I don t read it very often as it s quite expensive. The Sunday s is always delivered to our house weekly, so I often read bits of that, although, to be honest, it s my husband s choice as I prefer tabloids like The Star. So, what does Jenny look like? Well, she s quite tall with short, light brown hair. It used to be really long but she had it cut recently. What else? Well, she s slightly overweight, I suppose. I think she looks a bit like your sister. 4 Tom Sophie 5 Will Jane What will you do if you are offered the job, Sophie? Oh, I ve thought about it a lot. I d be stupid to turn it down, so I ll definitely take it. But it ll mean lots of changes in my life like having to move house and buy new clothes and things. At least I ll see more of you, Tom. How long have you been studying Spanish, Jane? Oh, about fifteen years Actually, less than that. I started when I was twenty-three and I m thirty-two now. I took German at university, but I had a holiday in Argentina, met a local man, and, well, the rest is history. Later I did a course in Mexico for two months, which was great, and I ve never looked back. English File photocopiable Oxford University Press 2007

30 Days on the Minimum Wage

Could you change your life in just 30 days? That’s the question documentary maker Morgan Spurlock asked when he filmed his new Channel 4 TV series, 30 Days. Martin Grady reviews the first programme of the series, 30 Days on the Minimum Wage.

The couple travel to Columbus, Ohio, one of the poorest cities in the USA. The only apartment that they can afford to rent is filthy, in a dangerous area, and has no heating or furniture. Alex begins working as a dishwasher, whilst Morgan does building work with no safety equipment. Neither of them earns more than the minimum wage.

It’s difficult to watch Morgan and Alex struggling in such terrible conditions. A charity gives them some furniture for free, but they have to live without heating, TV, telephone. They’re exhausted and freezing all the time and begin to argue about money. The couple interview people in the same situation and listen to their stories. It’s difficult to imagine, but these people have lived on minimum wage for decades and many have children.

When Alex becomes ill and Morgan badly injures his wrist, they go to a free clinic for the poor people, but can’t see a doctor because of long queues. People there say that without free medical care they’d die.

Sí, lo puedes decir: take money out of! Pero vuelve a leer lo que has escrito arriba, no has puesto: of, sólo out.

Ahora te queda claro?

well, perrito said ( second entry after mine ) that you can say:
I am going to get some money out of the cash machine.

If it depends on how you think of the cash machine. (You don’t reach into it to get the money, you just stand there and it kind of gives you the money.) And it’s more like saying ‘I need to get some money from my sister before we go out» (your sister hands it to you) and not like saying «I reached into my handbag and took some money out of my wallet.» (you put your hand in and drew something out).

Then:
why would you say:
I am going to get some money out of the cash machine.
