How to Achieve Happiness, According to Psychology?

It wasn’t very long ago that psychologists’ main focus was on mental disorders rather than improving the human experience and revealing how to achieve happiness.

Positive psychology was many decades away from being born when Abraham Maslow began researching the realm of happiness and human potential.

Because of Maslow’s tenacious attitude, even in the face of rejection from the scientific community. Abraham Maslow went on to create one of the most profound theories on how to achieve happiness called the Hierarchy of Needs.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Abraham Maslow performed a series of interviews and studies in order to create this theory that would come to shed light on what’s best for the human mind.

These needs would later be called the “Hierarchy of Needs,” which describes what essentials your mind needs in order for you to obtain maximum psychological health.

Physiological Needs:

This is one of the most fundamental needs of the human body, without your physical needs being met, your mind cannot work to its potential. For example, a starving soldier in a war-torn country cannot do his best without first satisfying that primal need.

In order to continue up the hierarchy, your hunger, thirst and all other physiological needs must be taken care of first because your mind will put a priority on these.

Safety:

When Maslow created this need, he didn’t mean to simply be out of physical harm. Maslow meant that your mind requires mental safety and a sense of feeling secure with yourself and your finances.

For example, if you were to lose your job, this need would be unfulfilled and you would be struggling to mentally hold yourself up. Thus, the reason we often feel like we’ve been knocked off our feet or vulnerable when we don’t have money or our significant other is looking like they might break things off.

Belonging:

The need to feel like you belong is one of the most profound feelings you can experience as a human being. We are social creatures and we thrive when we are part of a family or group of friends.

Without the need of belonging being fulfilled, depression and sadness creep in quite fast. We need to have someone to love or someone to confide in, to make our hearts feel better.

Esteem:

When you have a successful relationship and you know that you are loved and admired by your loved ones —you flourish and your self-esteem does too.

That’s why Maslow understood that self-esteem is an essential marker of your happiness because it is what lets you know that you’re worth something. That you belong somewhere and you have greatness within you if only you look. And when you feel great about yourself, the effect trickles to you being more generous and loving towards others.

Self-Actualization:

The top tier of the hierarchy is the ability to know and realize your potential. Maslow studied in-depth many of the happiest people and he came to the conclusion that they all had one thing in common. They all knew that they were capable of change and improvement.

Maslow went on to say that self-actualizing people perceive life and reality as it actually is. They view life with a sense of awe and wonder with them as part of the grand scheme.

You could even say self-actualization is similar to the enlightening the Buddha experienced under the Bodhi tree. It is an understanding of your might and that ultimately, your life is in your hands.

How to Achieve Happiness, According to Maslow?

Abraham Maslow stressed that the bottom four needs of the hierarchy or pyramid are “deficiency needs”. Meaning that food, safety, love, and esteem are necessities for living life, not just happiness.

If any one of those needs is not fulfilled, the human will find ways to fulfill them, even if they cost them. Like when we feel lonely, we might try to remedy this loneliness with drugs or alcohol, which unfortunately never quite substantially fills the need.

It is only after we have fulfilled all of our four basic needs at the bottom of the pyramid, that we are able to climb up to the top of Maslows mountain. A true place of peace and balance, where all of the human principles are met and you are independent. Where you can truly think, without having to think about your needs first, just dream and fly away.

For fun, and without dogmatism or any notions that I have the truth pinned down in anyway, I would like to point out the subtle racism and/or ethnocentrism of this article and western psychology in general. I am actually a fan of Maslow and think he had alot of brilliant ideas and this article touches on some important ideas that ring true to me. However, the science of happiness in our “western” culture is in its infancy in comparison to the science of happiness and mind of many contemplative cultures, particularly Buddhism which is pidgeonholed by many in the west as religion when it is actually a pragmatic, sytematic, and scientific approach to liberating people from the suffering of human life and achieving lasting happiness/peace that is achievable without the conditions that our culture assumes are necessary for achieving such happiness. These contemplative cultures have been researching the mind and the path to happiness, and/or solutions to our existential dilemmas as humans, for thousands of years in monasteries (universities in these cultures) and can offer a great deal to our infant western psychological paradigm as we see with the recent introduction to the concepts of mindfulness to our western psychological framework. The racist aspects of this, to me, is to propose that western psychological culture has a handle on this liberation stuff when it has not fully embraced the richness of cultures who believe and experience that the end of suffering and lasting happiness/peace is achievable through meeting basic human needs (e.g. food in quantities enough to sustain life, water, safety, and the human body and mind.) and observing the mind/body. There are folks who go on retreat for years with minimal human contact and eating minimal meals (maybe one small meal a day) in conditions that most of us would consider poverty and mostly in isolation and simply observe the mind and actually experience liberating happiness without a need for industry or what we often assume, in our culture, is necessary for happiness. Also, the concept of happiness in these cultures is a deep peace as apposed to what we often think of happiness in our industrial culture, which I suspect is more of a rapturous joy which is as unsustainable and impermanent as the industrial culture itself. Thankfully, this notion that we understand the mind in the west is evolving and embracing these rich ancient sciences of mind and diverse cultural understanding of psychology. Also, this is just one viewpoint and it would be helpful for me and everyone if others have thoughts to share regarding this to help balance out and add clarity to this subject.

Happiness is something everyone wants to achieve. While on the surface people may seem to be looking for money, recognition, or other things, what they actually seek is happiness. Unfortunately, many people never reach the level of happiness they desire.

So here I’d like to share 20 ways to find happiness in your life.

But, before we start, we should agree on something: our happiness is our responsibility. Your happiness is your responsibility. Don’t blame outside condition or other people if you’re not happy. While things around you could change and go bad, it is you who decide how you will respond to them. You can decide to be happy.

With that in mind, here are 20 ways to find happiness in life:

1. Stop comparing yourself with others

Comparing yourself with others won’t do you any good. You will either feel proud when you are above, or feel jealous and frustrated when you are below. None of them brings true happiness. So stop comparing yourself with others and simply be your best.

2. Count your blessings

There are so many things we should be grateful for, but we often forget them. When you realize how blessed you are, you will certainly be happier.

We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.

You can start with some simple things we take for granted.

3. Find your inner voice

To find true happiness, you must first find your inner voice. Slow down and take some quiet time for soul searching. What will make your life meaningful? What is true happiness for you? By knowing what your heart says, it will be easier for you to align with it.

4. Reconnect with your childhood dreams

Your childhood dreams can give you clues about your true calling. So discover them and reconnect with them. Get them back into your life. Childhood dreams are important, which is why Randy Pausch’s Last Lecture is entitled Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.

5. Help someone

Giving is an essential key to happiness. While we often think that we will be happier when we receive, the truth is we are happier when we give. This is also one of the most difficult things to apply.

You can apply this by finding someone in need and lending a helping hand. The person could be your family, friend, or even a stranger. You could also donate to a charity.

6. Spend more quality time with your loved ones

Relationships give us happiness more than any material in the world. So spend more quality time with your loved ones. In such moments, be sure that you devote your attention to them. Divided attention (with your work, for example) will decrease the quality of the time.

7. Apply the five languages of love

Love is an important way to happiness, and the five languages of love is a helpful concept to help you apply love. By understanding yours and others’ languages of love, you will be able to build better relationships.

8. Appreciate nature

The beauty of the nature can give you peace. Go out and see how beautiful the nature is. Watch how the birds sing and the sun shines, and let you be happy once again.

9. Pray or meditate

This is one of the most effective ways to calm your mind and get inner happiness. When you feel overwhelmed, a session of praying or meditation could help you clear your mind.

10. Know yourself

You will be happier if you understand who you are. Taking personality tests or drawing a simple life map could help you recognize who you are.

11. Say thank you

Sometimes we are so accustomed to people around us that we forget to thank to them. So take a little time to do that.

12. Smile

Smiling is a very simple thing to do, and yet it has great effect. There mere act of smiling can brighten your otherwise dark day.

13. Listen more than you speak

You will feel happier not only by understanding yourself, but also by understanding the people around you. One simple way to do that is by listening more than you speak. Try to understand what the other person means before speaking out your thoughts.

14. Stop judging others

Judging others will give you bad feeling toward them and there’s nothing good about that. Instead, you should look at the positive side of them. Sometimes it’s easier to see the others’ weaknesses, but looking at the positive side will brighten their day and your day.

15. Focus on what you can control

Trying to change things beyond your control will only frustrate you. Recognize what you can and can’t control, and focus solely on the things you can control. For instance, you can’t change how people around you behave, but you can change yours. So focus on changing your own behavior instead of changing theirs.

16. Forgive yourself

Have you done mistakes in the past? We could be intimidated by our past mistakes that we can no longer live to our full potential. But you aren’t perfect, and neither is anyone else. So forgive yourself and release the burden.

17. Forgive others

Besides forgiving yourself, you should also forgive other people who did wrong to you. Not forgiving them will only hurt you. Again, you should release the burden so that you can find happiness.

To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love. In return, you will receive untold peace and happiness.

18. Accept yourself

You may have some personality traits that you don’t like. For instance, perhaps you are an introvert and you wish you are an extrovert. Or you wish you were born in a different background. This is one thing you can’t control (see #15), so just accept yourself as you are. You are unique, and that’s something you should be grateful for.

19. Know how to deal with problems

Problems will always come your way, so your happiness depends not on whether or not you have problem, but on how good you deal with them. Knowing how to stay calm and how to overcome failure will be helpful.

20. Be a promise keeper

You will find happiness if you stay true to your heart and one way to do that is by being a promise keeper. The more you keep your promise, the more you will be aligned with your conscience and the happier you will be.

While I’m still far from perfect in applying them, I can attest how these ideas increase my happiness.

Very nice concise post! I have been writing a series on ‘Secrets of Wellbeing’ at GoodlifeZen which looks at the various facets of happiness.

I think there are some aspects of happiness that are worth thinking about. One is that it is a subjective experience. That is, two people might have the same life circumstances but rate them differently, ending up either unhappy or happy. So one thing that helps people to be happier is to change the way they view their life. Here is an example: I was just listening to a tape made by a young woman who recently died by MS at age 37. She recorded the tape some years earlier when she could still speak. At the time she was in hospital after an MS ‘attack’. She said, “This may sound strange, but I feel happier than ever before.” A few weeks ago I spoke to her parents who loved her deeply and accompanied her right through her illness. The father said to me: “My daughter and all of us family member would agree that her illness was the best thing that could have happened to us!” I reckon that for many families this suffering would have been rated as a life circumstance that made them deeply unhappy.

Another aspect I’ve been exploring and writing about is the strange fact that we are really really bad at predicting what will make us happier in the future. I’ve written an article about this in my ‘Series of Wellbeing Series’ on goodlifezen.com (I only mention this so that we can maybe start a wider discussion about happiness).

I agree Mary. It’s amazing how often two people have the similar things happen and yet one person is happy and the other sad or angry.

Michael J Fox is another Prime Example of this. In his book ‘I’m a Lucky Man’, that’s how he thinks about himself even with such a debilitating illness as Parkinson’s Disease. In fact he actually states that PD is one of the best things that’s happened to him.

Personally I’ve found that has I’ve got older I’ve really acknowledged and put into practise that I have choice about how I respond to situations. It’s not about anyone else and how they may or may not view things or what they may or may not have done.

Plain and simple, my happiness is my choice!

The best advice in this article is to stop comparing yourself to others.

Be unique. Be who you are. That is the best way to be happy.

Personally, I pride myself on being unique. I found that to be a common trait among successful people i met while touring the country to interview more than 80 highly successful individuals in conjunction with my soon to be released third book.

I completley agree with Mary’s comments about how happiness is all in how you see it. But, that is not so easy to do. 10 years ago, I took a good look at myself and realized I was desperatley unhappy. I was a pessimist, cynical, work-a-holic, who saw everything as a problem, yet I had little to really complain about.

I began at that point a personal journey that involved many big changes in my life (like getting a divorce, leaving my high paying corporate job and moving to the country). Even though the big changes helped, it was the little changes that made the biggest difference (like changing my own attitude about things). I now have plenty to complain about and many bad things have happened to me, but I am actually the happiest I have ever been. I know, it blows my mind too, but I sure ain’t going back to that other way of life.

You must stop thinking about your past mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes; nobody is perfect. Stop blaming yourself or feeling guilty for all the bad decisions you have taken in life. Also stop worrying about your future. Live in the present moment. Don’t let the good times go unnoticed.

Remember all your past moments and decisions that brought happiness and rejoice them. Be thankful to God for bestowing such joyous moments.

Your thoughts build your reality. Positive thoughts and positive mind attract positive things in life and negative thoughts fetch similar experiences. So the only way to experience happiness is to feel good about all that you have.

Steer clear from people who indulge in negative talks or de-motivate you. Surround yourself with positive minds instead.

Conclusion

It is easy to get carried away by negative thoughts and get into a state of anxiety and stress owing to several things in life. Happiness is basically a state of being happy and content. Several philosophers have given different views on this topic however the most dominant one is that happiness comes from within and must not be searched for in the outside world.

Money Cannot Buy Happiness

It is sad how people look for happiness outside. Many people associate happiness with money. If this was the case then rich people would have never felt sad. But on the contrary, we see that it is the rich who seem more anxious, fearful, stressed and often experience relationship problems and suffer from depression. Celebrities such as movie stars, singers and ministers have hoards of money and yet the divorce rate of these people is much higher than the general public. These people live in constant fear of being chased or hit and hence require security all the time. They are more fearful about the safety of their children. They are also the ones more prone to theft and robbery. Many of them have so much overflow of wealth that they are constantly stressed about where to invest or hide it. On the other hand, those belonging to the poor classes are often more carefree and joyous.

This is not to say that being rich is a bad thing. Having money means that you have access to a lot of things. You can go on holidays, plan social gatherings, purchase good clothes, buy properties, live in a good locality and a lot more and all this brings in a feel good factor which is an essential component for being happy. However, believing that if you have all these you will be happy is wrong. Materialistic things can make you happy momentarily but cannot help attain true happiness.

Happiness Comes from Within

It is rightly said, “You will find true happiness in life when you realize it only takes “you” to be happy. True happiness lies within yourself, it doesn’t come from others”. This point has been emphasized at several places. But most people dismiss it as irrelevant. It needs to be understood that happiness is basically a state of mind. It cannot be achieved from things we see outside. We have the power to create it with the help of positive emotions which can be achieved with good thoughts.

Conclusion

It is basically our thoughts that create our emotions. So we need to work upon building positive thoughts and a positive outlook towards life and it would ultimately result in true happiness.

Happiness is something that everyone craves for but very few are able to attain. As simple as it is to define, it is equally difficult to achieve it. This is because people often associate it with people and things. Happiness is something that begins and ends with you. Only those who realize this shall be able to attain true happiness.

Aristotle’s Philosophy about Happiness

Aristotle was one such philosopher who wrote at length about happiness. He believed that happiness depends on our own self. As per him, happiness is the main purpose of human life. He stated that happiness is a goal in itself and that it depends on virtue. However, Aristotle’s virtues are more individualistic rather than being typically social virtues.

As per Aristotle, a truly happy life needs the fulfillment of many conditions such as being physically and mentally fit. He has presented the theory of happiness in one of his most influential works, Nicomachean Ethics. This theory of Aristotle holds relevance even in today’s scenario. As per him, happiness is the end that meets all the needs. He states that almost everything we desire, be it good relationships, money, success or power is because we believe that these will make us happy. This is to say that everything else is just a means towards attaining happiness and happiness is an end in itself.

Happiness in a Relationship

Many people associate happiness with money and several others associate it with relationships. What they do not understand is that they can never truly be happy in a relationship if they are not happy with themselves. Relationship problems have been growing rapidly and the main reason behind this is that we expect too much from the other person. We expect them to make us feel happy. We feed our brain with lies such as, ‘we shall be happy if our partner buys us this dress’ or ‘we shall be happy if our partner plans a surprise for us’. The problem is not just with couples. It is the same with every relationship be it a parent-child relationship, brother-sister relationship or friendship.

Here are a few ways to help develop healthy and happy relationships:

Take good care of yourself. Do not give priority to the other person over yourself and let him do the same. If you give too much and do not get anything in return you are creating a recipe for disappointment.

If you want to go somewhere then plan it yourself. Do not wait for your partner or parent or child to take you there. Tell them you would love it if they come along. However, if they refuse do not get disheartened. Continue with your plan.

It is essential to give space to your partner and demand your personal space in a relationship to build a healthy relationship.

Conclusion

We set unrealistic expectations from other people in our life and believe that if they truly love us they would act in a certain manner. This is absolutely wrong.
