Buses are the cheapest way to travel around London. There are no zones for bus travel — a single bus ticket is the same price whether your journey is in zone 1 or if you pass through several zones.

We list the options available to pay for single bus tickets or for unlimited bus travel for one day, one week or one month.

Single bus tickets: Oyster/contactless single bus fares 2022

London buses are ‘cashless’. You can’t buy a bus ticket on the bus.

To pay for travel by bus in London you need one of the following:

A single bus fare costs £1.65 with a Pay as you go Oyster card and contactless credit/debit card.

‘One Hour’ hopper fare

There is a ‘one-hour’ hopper fare for Pay as you go Oyster/contactless card users. You can take as many bus journeys as you want in a one-hour period for £1.65.

The hopper fare also applies if you use the tube or train between your bus journeys.

One day bus travel: Oyster/contactless daily bus fares 2022

Bus ‘daily cap’

When you use a Pay as you go Oyster or a contactless card to pay for bus travel, there’s a ‘daily cap’.

This is the maximum amount deducted from your card for unlimited travel by bus in London in one day. If you make 3 or more bus trips*, £4.95 is taken from your Oyster/contactless card.

How does the ‘daily cap’ for buses work?

* a ‘bus trip’ means either a single trip on a bus or an unlimited amount of bus trips in a one hour period.

There’s no peak or off-peak rate for the bus ‘daily cap’; you can travel around the whole of London between 4.30am until 4.29am the following day for the same price.

One day bus pass

If you don’t want to use an Oyster card and don’t have a contactless card, you can buy a One Day Bus Pass for £5.50.

Weekly bus pass 2022

If you’re in London for 5, 6 or 7 days and only use buses, a one-week bus pass costs £23.30.

Compared to the cost of a weekly Travelcard, it’s good value.

Weekly bus cap with an Oyster card 2022

If you have an Oyster card, bus fares are capped from Monday to Sunday (the same as contactless cards). This means you will not pay more than £23.30, the cost of the standard weekly bus pass.

As the fares are calculated from Monday to Sunday, it mainly benefits people living and working in London rather than visitors.

If you plan to visit London for seven days and first use the buses on Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday buy an ordinary weekly bus pass instead.

Monthly bus pass 2022

A one month bus pass is £89.50

There’s not a huge saving compared to buying 4 x weekly passes, but it saves remembering to renew.

Monthly bus passes are loaded onto an Oyster card.

Oyster Ticket Stops

Oyster Ticket Stops are newsagents and local shops that sell London transport passes and Oyster cards. Find your nearest Oyster Ticket Stop.

Transport for London Visitor Centres at Victoria, Piccadilly Circus and King’s Cross & St Pancras International.

Are Travelcards valid on buses?

Yes, one day, weekly or monthly Travelcards are valid on London buses. Travelcards valid for any zone can be used to ride the buses all over London. For example, if you have a zone 2-3 weekly or monthly Travelcard you can use it to travel on buses in zone 1 (central London).

Single bus fares for children

Bus Saver tickets

These are no longer available to buy. If you have a Bus Saver ticket, it is still valid. Just show it to the bus driver when boarding the bus.

‘One more journey’ feature

If you don’t have £1.65 on your Oyster, you can use it to pay for a bus trip as long as you have between 1p–£1.64 credit on your Oyster card. The next time you top-up your card, you need to clear the negative balance before using it again.

Buying a single ticket on Getbybus

This document explains in detail how to purchase a single (one way) bus ticket on our website Getbybus.com (If you are reading this on a mobile phone or tablet, the illustrations shown in this post will look differently on your device, but the principle will be the same).

Selecting your route

On the home page of Getbybus.com, which looks like image 1 below, you have to do the following.

Information about routes

Once you have found the route you wish to travel on – click on the blue “Buy Ticket” button which will take you to the sign-in process.

Routes not available online

On some search results you might see the following displayed:

1. Sold out at Getbybus.com: This means we have no more tickets available online, you might be able to find tickets at sales agents or at the bus station. However, we can’t provide any information about availability at other sales points.

2. Not available online: This means that tickets for this departure can not be purchased online. Tickets might be available at other sales points. However, we can’t provide any information about availability at other sales points.

3. Online sale closed: This means that online purchase of tickets for the departure is no longer possible. Tickets might be available at other sales points. However, we can’t provide any information about availability at other sales points.

SIGN IN on Getbybus

On this screen (Image 5 above) please note the TIMER (00:20:30 minutes); this means that the tickets you have picked are reserved for 20 minutes and 45 seconds and once the timer reaches 00:00 your tickets will automatically be released so that other travellers can purchase the ticket. If you wish to purchase them you should complete your purchase before the timer reaches 00:00.

At the top of the screen (Image 5) you see a button saying “my tickets”; when you click on the button the following screen will be visible.

If it is the first time you purchase a ticket you have two options:

If you have already used getbybus.com to purchase a ticket you can sign in to our system using the e-mail and password or Google plus account you used by your prior purchase and then continue from there on.

SIGN UP (Registering) on Getbybus

At the sign-up screen on getbybus.com (Image 6 below), you will have to enter your e-mail, name and a password of your choice.

Pay attention to adding the correct e-mail address because if you enter the wrong one you will not receive your ticket after you have completed your purchase.

The name you enter on the Sign-up screen will automatically be transferred as the first passenger to any ticket you wish to purchase but you can overwrite this during the purchase process.

Applying a Getbybus Voucher

If you have a voucher code, you can click the text as shown in Image 7 as step number 1? An empty field will show up where you can enter the code and press ”APPLY”. Pay attention to the total price amount which should be changed according to the voucher.

NOTE: Unlike before, you are not able to add any more passengers during your purchase process. If you want to add more passengers or change the type of passengers, you will need to go back to the homepage and redo your search process.

Buying a ticket via CorvusPay

We HIGHLY recommend you click on the big blue button “My tickets” which takes you to your account on getbybus.com; from here you should download and save your ticket. Our system will of course also send the ticket to your e-mail address but in case you have mistyped your E-mail by the registration, you are not dependent on the E-mail.

From the My tickets area, you can also click on the city name from where you are travelling to see the information about the bus departure location.
