Meth Ingredients
People make methamphetamine with a variety of over-the-counter medicines, acids and household cleaning products. When these materials are combined, it can create noxious chemical vapors and fatal explosions. People with a meth addiction may resort to making the drug in small batches or in illegal drug labs.
Many of the flammable ingredients used to produce meth can cause large explosions when improperly mixed. Even when explosions or fires do not occur, the toxic chemicals released into the air during meth production pose numerous health risks, including dizziness, disorientation and organ damage.
The most popular primary ingredients used in making methamphetamine are pseudoephedrine and ephedrine, which are commonly found in cold medicine. When cooked, these ingredients chemically change into meth.
Pseudoephedrine
Pseudoephedrine is the active stimulant found in the over-the-counter medication Sudafed. It is used to treat nasal or sinus congestion caused by sinusitis, the common cold or respiratory allergies. The ingredient can also alleviate ear congestion resulting from ear infection or inflammation.
The stimulant can irritate the skin and eyes, requiring medical attention. Ingesting doses greater than 240 milligrams can lead to anxiety, dizziness and hypertension. When heated, pseudoephedrine is flammable. This increases the risk for fires when it is used to cook methamphetamine.
In an effort to curb illegal meth production, a law was passed in 2006 that required a prescription to purchase Sudafed. Afterward, an updated version of Sudafed that did not include pseudoephedrine, called Sudafed PE, was created. This version cannot be converted to meth and can be purchased without a prescription.
Ephedrine
Ephedrine is a decongestant that improves breathing by clearing nasal passages. Ephedrine and pseudoephedrine have actions and side effects similar to the natural hormone adrenaline.
The decongestant has stimulant properties. This means that it can raise blood pressure and heart rate, which can lead to numerous health complications. According to Columbia University, the drug can also cause chest pain, stroke, seizures, heart attack or psychosis.
“Shake and Bake” Meth
Since the original formulation of Sudafed was removed from pharmacy shelves, meth users have found new ways to make the drug. Many resort to the shake and bake method, which involves mixing household chemicals, a small amount of pills and pseudoephedrine in an empty soda bottle.
No flame is required. The chemical reaction produces a small amount of crystalline powder that can be smoked, snorted or injected.
The process is just as dangerous as making meth in sophisticated labs. When shaking the ingredients in a bottle, pressure builds. The pressure can cause the bottle to burst, filling the air with toxins. Lithium in the air can cause explosions or fires.
If any oxygen enters the bottle, or if the cap is loose when shaken, the entire bottle can catch on fire.
Signs of a Meth Lab
Meth is often made in crude laboratories filled with unsophisticated equipment. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, many people who use these labs have no training in chemistry.
The two common types of meth labs are superlabs and small toxic labs. Superlabs produce large amounts of methamphetamine, usually to supply drug trafficking groups. These groups sell the drug throughout the United States.
Conversely, small toxic labs produce limited amounts of meth. But small operations can still cause fires and explosions. They are often found in rural parks, houses, motel rooms or inside motor vehicles.
To combat the production of meth, U.S. laws require retail stores and pharmacies to monitor purchase records of products containing pseudoephedrine. By law, individuals can only purchase a limited amount of these products in a single day.
Cooking meth is typically a simple process, but it can be dangerous. The combination of ingredients used to make methamphetamine produces toxic fumes, fires or explosions that can compromise a person’s safety.
How Meth Works

The production of methamphetamine — and the desire to consume it — is seemingly unstoppable. When precursor chemicals are brought under tight control in one country, like the United States, production simply moves to another country, such as Mexico. When Mexican authorities clamp down, it moves farther south, or into Europe or Asia. Then, the finished product is shipped right back into the very countries that have waged such a battle to eradicate it in the first place.
Most meth smuggled into the United States is made in large labs — «superlabs» — in Mexico. There are many small meth labs in operation in the United States, but these mostly serve to feed the habits of the amateur cooks themselves.
The production of methamphetamine has been made more difficult by federal regulations, like the Combat Methamphetamine Act of 2005, aimed at controlling the flow of precursor chemicals such as ephedrine and pseudoephedrine (found in some cold remedies), as well as other necessary components. Through theft, subterfuge, forgeries, personal connections and sheer willpower, determined cooks are able to collect enough materials to make some home-grown meth.
Being determined and being safe are two different things — almost 6 pounds (2.7 kilograms) of toxic material is produced for each pound of meth cooked. This fact, however, doesn’t stop crystal meth addicts from brewing sloppy batches of fuming, stinking, toxic speed in poorly ventilated environments. Houses used as meth labs are often uninhabitable afterward, and cities and states involved in meth lab busts often don’t bother with seizing the property, since nobody in their right mind would purchase it at an auction, even at a steep discount. Small meth labs can be found in suburban houses, motel rooms, car trunks, in campsites or in the woods. Outdoor operations often result in water contamination and a dying-off of nearby vegetation [source: Snell].
Large-scale labs are often located inside abandoned barns or warehouses set up specifically for the purpose of factory-line production of methamphetamine. They aren’t necessarily dilapidated properties. They may actually be glistening corporate-style factories that crank out countless pounds of meth per year [source: Matthews].
Much as a destination can be reached by taking one of several different routes, so too can crystal methamphetamine be produced by a number of different methods, including scary «shake-and-bake» and «one-pot» processes. All of them, though, involve ephedrine or pseudoephedrine. The entire process can involve as many as 32 different chemicals, but the formula varies by the ingenuity and intelligence of the «chemists» [source: Snell].
Without getting into an exact recipe, we’ll look at how large-scale operations (which are more likely to use a methodical and exact approach to their production) make crystal meth.
This process generally takes about two days’ time and can result in hundreds of thousands of methamphetamine doses.

The idea behind the reaction is this
Do I need water?
DO NOT USE ANY WATER!!
1 gram of water can use up 10grams of lithium, more lithium = more heat which means more chance of explosion/fire. Keep everything anhydrous as possible.
Don’t use Ammonium Nitrate unless you happen to have lots of it laying around!!
Ammonium Sulfate is much cheaper and easier to get in large quantities
[SIZE=20px]SUPPLIES NEEDED[/SIZE]
2oz Ammonium Suflate
2L Plastic Bottle
1 cup to 1 and a half cup coleman fuel. You can also use isopropyl alcohol, xylene or ethanol.
1 AA Lithium Strip per 2 grams. half strip for one box
THE REACTION
Add all of the above then add 1 AA strip Per 2 Boxes of 2400 mg. or half strip for 1 box..
leave the PSE out.
Shake her up if its not audibly or visually starting to make gas well.
Leave the lid cracked for a few minutes at a time then shut and shake untill it starts to build press.
Slowly burp. hiss and quickly a few times. keep an eye on it. for when it really starts to go.
Let it pressurize up and tend to it, let it out slowly now and then too keep it within a workable pressure it will after 25/45 minutes be making the bronze that you want and lots of it.
When3/4 to 7/8 or all of the strip has turned to the red/ lion bronze etc. puddle-
Slowly sprinkle the fine ground gups into and on top of the bronze, dont take all day. but dont just plop the whole powder load right down on top of it either.
Shake and vent like before trying to keep at least a little pressure on the thing. Shake vent etc. the bronze will be used up and it will go grey, blue, sometimes almost black- the solvent.
It will clear up from the top down like the vertical hold on a TV. the farther you are along= the faster it will clear up.
Its also done when somertimes the bronze is all used up. All gone from floating on top. The solvent is clear then also right after that happens.
Go ahead and loosen the capso it bleeds the pressure off, and leave it fairly loose for a few minutes to let most of the gas react and get up out through the solvent.
Tighten the cap.
Two enhancements only in a not craZY humid environment.. and with a real free flowing small paper towel plug in the neck or a cotton ball or two tip the bottle slowly trying to keep the media in the bottom of the bottle get the fluid/solvent to go down and with the bottle tilted get the solvent line above the whole cap.
Carefully loosen the cap and feed the solvent out and around the cap while its tilted swiftly down through the funnel.
This is a quick as possible rough enhancement, we want this done this is a dangerous step if there is any bronze floating in that pool of solvent in the funnel. Get it done quickly and pick your enviro wisely for this step, dont pull this on top of the washing machine with a can of camp fuel rubbing elbows with you or jars of solvent etc near any of this.
Reasoning here.. if its extremely humid the floating bronze can get itchy and real pissed off firefly style when the solvent has run all through the funnel and its sitting there in the real h20 laden air.
Pull the cotton balls or plug from the neck and do the same.
Now Get yourself another vessel like the one you have your solvent in now and make sure its clean dry and at least luke warm or room temp.
Pour the solvent from one vessel to the other 5 to 10 times.
Check the smell of the solvent.
The AA is completely gone yea?
Clean the empty vessel thoroughly and dry and room temp or lukw warm it.
Clean and dry the funnel well inside and out and fit it with one or two tightly packed cotton balls or a nice decent paper towel plug or both a plug and a cotton ball or two half ass tight on top of it and place two enhancements on top of these.
Pre wet /pour a small amount of the same solvent you used / new stuff this time.. through the funnel and adjust the plug for a decent/ good filtration.
Finish enhancement the solvent now.
When its all enhancemented shove the enhancements and the plugs,cttnballs into the Reaction Vessel and recap immediately after its done enhancementing. This cuts the stinky factor down of the solvent in your enviro.. and keeps a handle on it.
Gas the solvent.
Put the gupps in after the bronze, this allows less precursers for the rxn, which means better yeild, less shit in there to trap the freebase Ma for it to cling get all mixed and mingled into.
The rxn between the Amm Nitrate and Sodium Hydroxide runs alot better when the guppy pill mass isnt getting into the way in between the two.
You get by with less Lithium to make the bronze because you arent shaking it and ramming it into the fert lye layer using up the bronze dicking around trying to make the gas to make the bronze etc. etc. You make the bronze with minimal Nh3 precursers and dont shake/waste any bronze.
Any adulterant in the pill mass to counter act the rxn and or cripple the rxn betwen the two to get to or severely slow down the bronze endpoint is driven around.
The finished product won’t be crystal but it should look something like this

Are Meth Labs Still A Major Problem in the U.S.?
According to statista.com, the number of reported meth lab “incidents” has decreased dramatically in the last two decades from a high of over 23,000 in 2004 to under 1000 in 2019. There is an alarming new danger recently identified by the DEA. At the end of September 2021, The Drug Enforcement Administration warned the American public 4 https://www.dea.gov/alert/sharp-increase-fake-prescription-pills-containing-fentanyl-and-meth of the “alarming increase in the lethality and availability of fake prescription pills containing fentanyl and methamphetamine.”
The DEA further reports that “International and domestic criminal drug networks are mass-producing fake pills, falsely marketing them as legitimate prescription pills, and killing unsuspecting Americans. These counterfeit pills are easy to purchase, widely available, and often contain deadly doses of fentanyl.”
These pills are being sold as fake opioids and painkillers like Vicodin or Oxycodone, even Xanax, and often contain meth and fentanyl in lethal doses.
As far as other drugs being added into powdered or crystal meth, the danger is not so much other drugs like heroin, cocaine, and marijuana. Instead, the chemicals used to create meth are the sources of highly toxic additives or waste products being “left in” the final meth product.

Three small glass bottles with lids (approx. 3 oz., but not important)one should be marked at 1.5oz, use tape on the outside to mark it (you might want to label it as ether). One should be clear (and it can’t be the marked one).
A Pyrex dish (the meatloaf one is suggested)

WARNING: Ethyl Ether is very flammable and is heavier than air. Do not use ethyl ether near flame or non-sparkless motors. It is also an anaesthetic and can cause respiratory collapse if you inhale too much.

Take the unmarked small bottle and spray starter fluid in it until it looks half-full. Then fill the rest of the way with water, cap the bottle and shake for 5 minutes. Let it sit for a minute or two, and tap the side to try and separate the clear upper layer. Then, draw off the top (ether) layer with the eyedropper, and throw away the lower (water) and cloudy layer. Place the ether in the marked container. Repeat this until you have about 1.5 oz. of ether. Put the cap on it, and put it in the freezer if you can. Rinse the other bottle and let it stand.
Ethyl ether is very pungent. Even a small evaporated amount is quite noticeable.
Ephedrine & or P-Ephedrine:
5. Pour 1/8 teaspoon of the lye crystals into the bottle of ephedrine and agitate. Do this carefully, as the mixture will become hot, and give off hydrogen gas and/or steam. H2 gas is explosive and lighter than air, avoid any flames as usual. Repeat this step until the mixture remains cloudy. This step neutralizes the HCl in the salt, leaving the insoluble free base (l-desoxyephedrine) again. Why do we do this? So that we can get rid of any water-soluble impurities. For 3 oz. bottles, this should take only 3 repetitions or so.
7. Let the mixture settle. There will be a middle layer that is very thick. Tap the side of the bottle to get this layer as thin as possible. This is why this bottle should be clear.
8. Remove the top (ether) layer with the eyedropper, being careful not to get any of the middle layer in it. Place the removed ether layer into a third bottle.

9. Add to the third bottle enough water to fill it half-way and about 5 drops of muriatic acid. Cap it. Shake the bottle for 2 minutes. When it settles, remove the top layer and throw it away. The free base has now been bonded to the HCl again, forming a water soluble salt. This time, we’re getting rid of ether-soluble impurities. Make sure to get rid of all the ether before going to step 11!
10. If there is anything left from step 3, repeat the procedure with it.
11. Evaporate the solution in the Pyrex dish on low heat. You can do this on the stove or nuke it in the microwave (be careful of splashing), but I have found that if you leave it on top of a hot-water heater (like the one that supplies hot water to your house) for about 2-3 days, the remaining crystals will be ephedrine HCl.
If you microwave it, I suggest no more than 5-10s at one time. If it starts “popping”, that means you have too little liquid left to microwave. You can put it under a bright (100W) lamp instead. Microwaving can result in uneven heating, anyway.
First Batch: 120mg ephedrine HCl Estimated: 300mg (100% of theoretical, disregarding HCl)
Now, Making Methamphetamine out of ephedrine by reducing it with Hydroiodic Acid and Red Phosphorus.
