How I Cope with Stress
Nowadays, stress is widespread among people, due to the quickening pace of life. Numerous problems at work, at school, in private life can cause stress. Doctors even predict that stress and depression will be the βnumber oneβ problem for people.
As regards me, I am vulnerabe to stress and, as a consequence of it, depression. Every time I give up fighting stress, I have depression. But most often, I try to cope with it. For example, I try to occupy myself with affairs not connected with my problems that have caused the stress. Another way that sometimes helps me is listening to music, but sometimes it makes me more depressed.
In my opinion, the most effective way is to share your problems with close people (for me, it is my parents). They will definitely listen to you, understand the matter of your problem and help you. But, as for me, if I donβt want to receive outside help and want to cope with stress by myself, talking with parents will make me more furious and angry.
There is one more way of tackling stress for me, but it is an unreliable way β the Internet. When I am using the Internet, I forget about reality and about my problems. But when I finish and leave the Internet world, I come back to my depressed mood, problems and stress. Although it is the most unreliable way, I always choose it.
To my mind, there isnβt any reliable way of coping with stress, because stress can be caused by different problems and we canβt solve all our problems with the same method.

Living in a big city is very stressful and intense. Of course, people of megapolises are subjected to stress more than people of villages. Itβs not only because of the intensive and crazy lifestyle. I think that if you live in the city β your life is full of changes, and you are always in the center of all events. For millions of people, this urban life is very hard, their life is full of stress.
What can defeat stress? What instruments are useful in the fight with stress? In my opinion, first of all you must be βin love with yourselfβ. If you think that you are stupid, fat, not attractive and others, your head is full of depressive thoughts and these thoughts can set you in stress. Be self-sufficient and the world will come simple!
Secondly, if you have troubles β βdonβt worry, be happyβ, as the song says. Turn on your favorite music, make a cup of aromatic tea, make yourself comfortable and read some interesting book. I have great confidence that you will feel better! Third and last, my advice is to travel. A change of atmosphere will help you to see the world in a new way.
To lessen your stress is to make your life as you wish. Everybody has to do things that they hate, but there are things that you love. Donβt forget about them and find pleasure for yourself more frequently!

Many people always complain about being stressed, when you ask them why their stress they give you different answers from school to work to problems with family or friends. Stress is scientifically defined as the process by which we perceive and respond to certain events, that we appraise as threatening or challenging (Psychology eight edition 550).
This means anything that is happening in a personβs life can lead to stress if itβs not handled correctly and becomes a problem. Even though many people know their stressed they donβt know how to deal with it, this leads to many problems for people.
Stress is caused by many things that occur daily in each personβs life, one major cause of stress is fear. Each fear message produces an associated stress response. Even though we may not feel the effects of a stress response reaction, one still occurs. Meaning the body always produces an associated stress response to each fear and one that is directly proportional to the level of fear (anxiety Centre, stress fear).
Another major cause of stress in most peopleβs lives is their work or school. Many students now face a lot of stress in schools because of the high level of competition to get into college etc.
Some stress can be good, for example it can motivate them to try harder to get good grades while too much of it can majorly hurt students. Many students feel a certain level of pressure due to the expectations of their teachers and family. They want to please everyone, and do their best so as not to let anyone down (examrare why do students have exam stress).
Causes Of Stress Among Young People
This sort of pressure students feel can lead them to often overthink things and cause unnecessary stress. Another group of people that feels stress daily are people that work in a very competitive working environment.
Just like students at school adults that work also can feel a lot of stress from their jobs. This amount of stress especially increases if they donβt feel like their job is secure. Many of the most stressful events are related to the workplace: firings, business readjustments, changes in financial status, altered responsibilities, a switch to a different line of work, trouble with the boss, variations in work hours or conditions, retirement and vacations. Surprisingly, stress is not always a bad thing. It can stimulate creativity and productivity.
According to Robert Ostermann, professor of psychology at FDUβs Teaneck-Hackensack Campus, βNo one reaches peak performance without being stressed, whether an athlete, an office worker or a manager. β The natural pattern of human behavior is to experience a stress-causing event or situation, react to it with increased tension and then return to a normal, relaxed state. A final major source of stress is change.
Change causes many people to become stressed because theyβre not use to a particular thing that makes them feel comfortable or in control. Significant changes whether positive or negative can be major sources of stress at any stage of life. Major changes such as a job loss or promotion, pregnancy, the death of a spouse or family member, sudden illness, injury, relocation, marriage, divorce, the departure of a child to college or other important events can force you to adapt to new and potentially uncomfortable situations, often leading to stress.

Although many people ignore stress and try to live their lives without coping with it, it comes with very big consequences. Stress can cause both physical and mental problems that donβt deal with it. Mentally over stress people get affected heavily. The consequences of stress to oneβs mental health range from nervousness to lack of concentration, to drug abuse to the extreme case of depression.

There are also many ways people can socially deal with stress. Studies show by surrounding oneβs self with positive, people that have a positive outlook on life a person can better deal with stress. By surrounding themselves with such positive people the person also becomes an optimistic person instead of pessimist with a negative look at the world.

Even though there are many natural safe non harming ways to relief stress there are many people that try to relief stress by doing things that are very harmful to themselves. This includes drug abuse. There are many drugs sold that are supposed to help people with stress and anxiety. Even though most people use this the right way to help them deal with their stress there are many others that get addicted to such drugs. Addiction to such drugs can lead to many health problems including death. Another negative way people relief violence is through the use of violence. There are many people that use violence to channel out their stress.
Some people donβt have as much control as others so they will be more susceptible to using violence because of stress. Overall everyone deals with stress because stress is in everyoneβs daily activity. There are many different consequences to not dealing with oneβs stress. But there are also many proven ways to deal with a personβs stress and problems. Most people already have a certain way of dealing with their stress through talking to family friends or playing a sport, or other things. There are also a lot of people that donβt know how to deal with their stress which can lead to many dangerous situations happening.

To fully understand why these practices are so effective, we first need to understand that stress can actually be divided into two different categories that are tightly intertwined:
Emotional Stress
Emotional stress is a feeling of being under abnormal pressure. This pressure can come from different aspects of your day to day life; such as an increased workload, a transitional period, an argument you have with your family or new and existing financial worries. You may find that it has a cumulative effect, with each stressor building on top of one another.
During these situations, you may feel threatened or upset, and your body might create a stress response. Your bodyβs reaction to your emotional state is the release of a multitude of stress hormones that, in turn, affect the way your body feels, moves, and responds to external stimuli. This can cause a variety of physical symptoms, change the way you behave, and lead you to experience more intense emotions.
You can see that emotional stress has a tangible physical repercussion on your body. This is due to your bodyβs reaction to your thoughts and not to physical activities or external sensory inputs.
In simple words, when youβre thinking βstressful thoughts,β and you are unable to stop thinking about them (especially if you are worried about something that is outside of your control), you experience what I call emotional stress.
Physical Stress
Physical stress is your bodyβs reaction to external stimuli that trigger a βfight or flightβ response and also, your bodyβs metabolic reaction to what you breathe, drink, and eat.
Physical stress is not intrinsically bad; in fact, it can be very helpful. For example, exercising causes physical stress, but it relieves emotional stress. [1] Also, having a stress response because a car is about to hit you while youβre crossing the road may turn out to be life-saving.
On the contrary, eating processed food, drinking alcohol or sugary beverages, and smoking or using recreational drugs are all negative physical stressors.
Physical stressors like exercising are something that we want our body to experience often, but they are still a form of stress that, when added to a lot of other stressors, may actually have a detrimental effect on our health.
For example, trying to run a 10k fasted when you had a four-hour sleep and an emotionally stressful week may not be optimal for your health. You would probably be better off doing a 5k after a good meal and a 20-minute long meditation.
At this point, itβs easy to see that everyone experiences stress to various degrees. However, when it is affecting your life, health, and wellbeing, it is important to tackle it as soon as possible.
7 Effective Ways to Reduce Stress
If you had looked online for βways to reduce stress,β you probably found a bunch of generic advice like βtry to sleep moreβ or βexercise regularlyβ and βeat healthily.β While these are all great things that we all should do every day, I found that, when trying to help a very busy client to reduce his/her stress levels, this simple advice wasnβt really helping them. In fact, it only made things worse.
For this reason, instead of giving you generic advice, I am going to give you 7 practical strategies that instantly reduce stress, and can be implemented in your daily routine without taking too much of your precious time.
Reducing Physical Stress
1. Manage Your Blood Sugar Levels
These ups and downs in blood sugar have been linked to an increase in stress. Itβs easy to see that, when we are having a stressful day, being all of a sudden tired and hungry wonβt really make our stress levels go away. Quite the opposite, in fact, fatigue, and eating disorders are clear symptoms of stress.
In the book 12 Rules For Life, Dr Jordan B. Peterson explains how, when treating patients suffering from stress and depression, he always prescribes them to swap their breakfasts and lunches with low carb options like eggs, meat or fish. Dr Peterson says that this little trick is often as effective as prescription drugs. In fact, most patients wonβt need any prescription drugs and simply get better because they have stabilized their blood sugar levels throughout the most stressful part of the day.
If you are used to having a high-carb breakfast like yoghurt, cereals, Caffe-lattes, or fruit smoothies, try to swap them with scrambled eggs, bacon, cheese, or sliced meat. You can do the same for your lunch by having meat or fish with some vegetables. This little bio-hack will allow you to have a more stable level of energy throughout the working day and, also, give you a feeling of satiety. Reducing hunger and fatigue will inevitably help you reduce stress too.
2. Drink More Water
Drinking water has a multitude of health benefits, but when it comes to reducing stress, the most noticeable are:
A well-hydrated body allows you to think clearer and faster and get more things done because you wonβt feel as tired. Most biochemical processes that happen inside the brain require water and minerals. Staying constantly hydrated will optimize your brain function and help you to perform better at your job.
Having too many things to do and, yet, feeling unproductive, is a huge cause of stress amongst busy people. Something as simple as having a refillable water bottle always with you and sipping every five minutes or so can have a positive impact on your stress levels, health, and performance.
3. Working out on the Same Day/Time Each Week
I already said that physical exercise had been proven to reduce stress levels (despite being metabolic stress itself). I also said that working out when you are already stressed and short on time may actually have the opposite effect and increase your stress levels even further.
Having a fixed day and time each week dedicated to exercise (preferably in the morning, before meetings, and calls start to disrupt your day) is essential if you want to reduce stress.
A very useful trick is to book the time blocks you want to dedicate to exercise a week or two in advance, before booking work meetings and social events. By doing this, you accomplish two very important things that will lower your stress levels:
4. Sleep Following Your Circadian Rhythm
We all know that sleep is paramount when it comes to managing stress. What you might not know is that each individual may benefit from sleeping and waking up at different times.
In the book Why We Sleep, Dr. Matthew Walkers observes that some individuals benefit from a regular sleeping pattern (the typical 10 pm to 6 am) while other individuals have a better quality of sleep when they can sleep late at night and wake up late in the morning ( 1-2 am to 10 am). This phenomenon is due to the bodyβs tendency to follow the circadian rhythms (basically our natural clock that is affected by the movement of the Earth).
Dr. Walkers noticed that, when the latter group of people had a typical 9-5 job, they were much more prone to stress, and they were also more likely to develop conditions like depression and neurodegenerative diseases.
If you are a fan of early mornings, waking up as early as 5 am and going to bed as early as 9 pm is probably a good thing for your health and will definitely lower your stress levels, since you will have some extra time in the morning to either exercise or to get ahead with your to-do list.
If you are a nocturnal animal and you struggle to get to bed before midnight, you should try to get at least three lay-ins (when you wake up later than 9 am) each week. This could be done by taking some late shifts at work and not booking early activities during the weekend.
Reducing Emotional Stress
Before exploring my favourite ways to reduce emotional stress, I need to stress the fact that physical stress should be addressed first. This is because emotional stress is often due to interaction with other people or situations that are outside of our control zone.
You might be emotionally stressed because youβre being pressured by your boss or because youβre experiencing some tension in your relationship. You also might be stressed because youβre worried about things that you canβt do much about (like someone elseβs health or the economy).
Emotional stress is often outside of your control zone, while physical stress is nearly always a conscious choice that you have total control over. Put simply, you canβt change the economy, but you can definitely exercise, eat well, and sleep more.
Now that Iβve made this clear letβs move on to my favourite ways to reduce emotional stress.
5. Carefully Plan Your Week on a Sunday Evening
The one thing that will help you manage and reduce stress after taking care of your health is βimproving productivity.β
Being able to get more done in less time can help you stop feeling overwhelmed and allow you to find some extra time to do activities that reduce stress like meditation, being in nature, or reading a book. For this reason, spending a whole hour on a Sunday evening to carefully plan your working week, hour-by-hour is a must-do. Use this system to maximize the efficacy of this exercise:
6. Book Big Chunks of Alone-Time for Your Most Demanding Projects
Another crucial factor in reducing stress is avoiding distractions. Phone notifications, emails, phone calls, and interactions with people can totally disrupt your flow when youβre working on a demanding task.
Multiple studies confirm this. Distractions donβt just eat up time during the distraction; they derail your mental progress for up to a half-hour afterwards (thatβs assuming another distraction doesnβt show up in that half-hour). In other words, that β30 seconds to check Twitterβ isnβt just 30 seconds down the drain; itβs 25 minutes and 30 seconds.
And all these distractions not only hurt productivity, but they also have negative emotional effects. Research has shown that attention distraction can lead to higher stress, a bad mood, and lower productivity.
In the book Deep Work, Cal Newport explains how the greatest thinkers in history had the habit of isolating themselves for hours (or even days) to fully focus on their most meaningful work. While you donβt need to move on alternate weeks on a medieval tower with no electricity (like Carl Jung used to do), you can definitely find a quiet space where you can immerse yourself in your most stressful tasks.
When you do that, make sure to turn off all phone notifications and ask not to be disturbed. You will be surprised by how big of an impact this practice has on your overall stress levels.
7. Delegate the Least Important Tasks
Last but not least, spending time on doing tasks that you donβt deem important or could/should be done by someone else can cause stress. This is due to the fact that you wonβt dedicate time to the most important voices of your to-do list and, consequently, build up emotional stress.
When you plan your week, spend some time thinking about how you could delegate those annoying tasks to either a paid professional or someone that would be eager to help you. Donβt be afraid to open your wallet and hire someone like a cleaner or an online assistant. How Do Stress and Stressors Help a Person in Identifying Ways to Cope?
Many people often think there is little that can be done about their level of stress. However, the fact is contrary. Individuals should identify their stressors and develop coping strategies aimed at neutralizing and finally eliminating the effects of the stressors. I have in the past adopted various strategies in coping with stress.
There are many stress coping methods. However, individuals often find themselves employing unhealthy and unproductive methods, which end compounding the problem. Such methods include withdrawal from friends and families, use of pills, drinking, smoking, overeating, and taking out of stress on other people. Even though these methods can work, their results are temporary as individuals soon face the reality of the stressor.
Healthier and effective ways of controlling stress require either situation change, or reaction change. Every individual exhibits unique response to stress, which makes it impossible to have a common method of coping. The simplest approaches to coping with stress, which I have used in the past, include problem identification and solving, acceptance, alteration, self-nurturing, and anticipatory approach also suggested by Aldwin (2007).
Problem Solving Approach in Coping Stress
Problem solving approach is a strategy that its applicability is dependent on the determination of the main cause of stress. Once the stressor is identified, it becomes easy to solve the stress as an individual directs his or her energy towards subduing the stressor. For example, if lack of finances is the main cause of stress, then an individual may seek for new employment to provide for the much-needed cash.
The Identification of the Stressor
The identification of the stressor also opens a window for an individual to explore other adaptation methods, which can be of help in the future such as avoidance. In anticipatory approach, an individual prepares for possible causes of stress and consequently prepares for them before their actual occurrence. Past trends and acquired knowledge can help an individual in such preparations.
For example, a student subjected to last minute revision pressures and stress for failing to revise in time may expect the same, hence prepare early in the following semesters to avoid going through the same. This method is very effective as an individual can review and continually revise the best method to use every time the stressor reoccurs. Sometimes stressful situations are not only complex, but also impossible to avoid.
It is only prudent for individuals affected to alter and adapt to such situations. This involves finding possible ways of changing an individualβs operation to avoid the stress from reoccurring. For example, stress caused by coworkers could be avoided by expressing onesβ feelings to the specific workers instead of bottling them up. If the desired change is not achieved, then one can go a step further by changing his or her own behaviors.
Stressors such as the death of people we love, fatal accidents, and illness are unavoidable and impossible to ignore. However, letting such stressors take tall of an individualβs life is also unacceptable. In such cases, the best coping strategy is acceptance. Though hard to take, acceptance is the only way out for individuals facing unchangeable life-threatening situations.

There are other effective coping strategies, which even though I have not used, I would consider applying. Self-nurturing is such βeffective way of coping with stressβ (Aldwin, 2007).
Creating time for fun and relaxing, enhance our ability to copy with lifeβs unending stressors. It is therefore prudent for an individual to engage frequently in healthy ways of relaxing such as, going for a walk, playing with a pet, going adventures, watching comedies, and lighting scented candles.
