How To Customize Your Text On Discord

If you’re a gamer, you’re likely familiar with Discord for your gaming connections and communication. When you are on the server’s typing interface, however, sometimes you need a little more than plain text to get your message across. Getting Familiar With The Basics

Going in, familiarize yourself with some of the mighty characters that make these text formatting manipulations possible. Scavenge your keyboard to find your short cut for the asterisk symbol ( * ), the underscore symbol ( _ ), the tilde symbol (

), the tick or backtick symbol ( ` ), and the backslash symbol ( \ ). On a standard US qwerty keyboard layout, these can be found on the following keys:

Bold Text

To bold your words or phrases, surround the text with two asterisk symbols on either side, and hit enter. Do not add any space between the two asterisk symbols, both among them or the between them and the starting or ending character of the text.

Italicized Text

To italicize your words or phrases, surround the text with a single asterisk symbol on either side and hit enter. Do not add any space between the asterisk symbol and the starting or ending character of the text.

To strike through your words or phrases, surround the text with two tilde symbols on either side and hit enter. Do not add any space between the two tilde symbols, both among them or between them and the starting or ending character of the text.

Getting Fancy With Multiple Commands

If you want to combine some of the formatting options discussed above, these are the general rules you will have to follow in the cases outlined below.

Bold & Italicized Text

To simultaneously bold and italicize your words or phrases, surround the text with two asterisk symbols for the bold command and add a third asterisk symbol for the italicize command. Hit enter. Do not add any space between the three asterisk symbols, both among them or between them and the starting or ending character of the text.

Bold & Underlined Text

Do not add any space between the asterisk and underscore symbols, both among them or between them and the starting or ending character of the text.

Returning To Plainer Roots

What if you just want to send some asterisks, underscores, or tilde symbols without them turning into bold, italicize, underline, or strike through commands? To do this, add backslashes before each of these symbols to prevent them from turning into commands. The backslash behaves as an escape symbol. Once again, do not add any space between the symbols or the backslashes.

Coloring Text

To color your text, you’ll have to use the tick or backtick symbol ( ` ). Look ahead for the combinations of ticks and dashes needed for the different color schemes

Install Better Discord

Make sure that Discord is not running on your system. Open up your task manager and end all of the Discord processes still running in the background. When this is done, click here and download Better Discord. When the download is complete, simply locate the executable file and double-click it. After a second or two, the license agreement will open up which you will need to accept, click on Next, and then select Install BetterDiscord and click on Next. Make sure to choose the correct Discord Version installed on your system. In case you’re unable to find any version, then click on Browse. In your file explorer, make sure to locate your Discord executable file. After clicking on Install, the setup installer will take a moment to install BetterDiscord on your PC. When it’s done, you can close the window and delete the installer.

Better Discord Settings, Plugins & Themes

After starting up Discord, navigate to your User Settings by clicking on the gear icon at the bottom of your window. Scroll down to find the BetterDiscord settings. In the Settings tab, you can apply some general and appearance settings. We recommend to use the Minimal Mode and Colored Text.

Under Plugins, make sure to click on Open plugin folder. This will open up a folder in your file explorer. Make sure to keep this window open, and then in your browser, make sure to visit the Plugins tab on the BetterDiscord website. You can choose from different plugins for notifications, Discord settings, status changes, server roles or simply fun plugins to play around with. Click on Download to download the plugin.

When the download is complete, simply drag and drop the file into your discord plugins folder which we opened up before. A new message on Discord will appear. It may ask you to download some additional files and then you should see the plugin listed on Discord. You can enable, edit or delete it using these icons on the right. As for Themes the process is the same; Back in your browser, visit the Themes page. Here, make sure to download a theme that you like, and then drag and drop it into your themes folder.

Like any good communication app, Discord has the option for its users to switch between light or dark background settings, letting people customize how much light they’re viewing while chatting on the app. But since Discord is a more popular app among gaming communities, its customizable appearances go beyond a simple light or dark setting. If you want a flashier background while using the app, you’ll need to install third-party software on your computer and then alter Discord’s settings.

How to change your Discord background

To change your Discord background to either a light or dark setting:

1. Go to the Discord app’s user settings (it’s the gear-shaped icon in the bottom-left corner on your desktop. On your phone, click on your profile icon in the bottom-right corner).

2. Scroll down to App Settings and select Appearance.

3. Choose between Light or Dark.

If you want a background that’s more expressive than a simple dark or light version, you’ll have to install third-party software, BetterDiscord. These changes will only be applicable to your desktop app and not on your phone.

2. Agree to the licensing terms, click Next, and then select Install BetterDiscord.

4. Click Install.

5. Select a theme from the BetterDiscord website that you want to use and click Download.

6. Click on the gear icon in the bottom-left corner to go to your user settings page.

9. Click Open theme Folder. This will open the folder where you need to put the theme you downloaded in order for BetterDiscord to see it. Once it is placed inside this folder, it will automatically be visible inside the BetterDiscord themes page.
