How to delete your Twitter account on iPhone or Android

1. Open the Twitter app on your iPhone or Android.

2. Tap the icon of three horizontal lines in the top-left corner and select «Settings and privacy.»

3. Tap «Account» at the top of the «Settings and privacy» page.

4. At the bottom of the «Account» page, select «Deactivate your account.»

5. Next to «Reactivation period,» tap «Make a selection» and choose either 30 days or 12 months in the pop-up.

6. Scroll to the bottom of the page and tap «Deactivate.»

7. Enter your password and hit «Deactivate.»

8. A pop-up should prompt you to finally finish deactivating your account. Press «Yes, deactivate» and it will then take you to the Twitter login page after successfully deactivating your account.

Note: While your Twitter account is in the reactivation period, your username, display name, and public profile will not be viewable on the Twitter website or mobile app. You can reactivate your account at any point simply by logging back in.

How to delete your Twitter account on desktop

1. Go to the Twitter website and log into your account.

2. In the menu on the left side of the Twitter homepage, click «More.»

3. Select «Settings and privacy» in the pop-up.

4. At the top of the Settings menu, click «Your account.»

5. Click «Deactivate your account» at the bottom of the «Your Account» menu.

6. In the «Deactivate account» section, choose a «Reactivation period.» You can select either 30 days or 12 months.

How to delete the Twitter app

If you’re not ready to delete your Twitter account but want to take a break from the site, you can delete the app from your device without deleting your entire account.

To delete the Twitter app on an Android, hold your finger down on the app icon and tap «Uninstall,» or to hide the app, drag and drop it in your app drawer.

To delete the Twitter app on an iPhone, hold your finger down on the app icon and tap «Remove App» then «Delete App,» or to move the app to your App Library, tap «Remove App» then «Remove from Home Screen.»

How to reuse your username or email on Twitter

When you delete your Twitter account, your username is deleted along with it. If you want to reuse your username, then before you deactivate your account, change your username to something you don’t mind being deleted.

You can take the following steps before deactivating your account to preserve your current username or email address for future use.

1. Open Twitter in a browser or in the mobile app and log in.

2. In a web browser, click the «More» option on the left side of the screen. On the mobile app, tap the icon of three horizontal lines in the top-left corner.

3. Choose «Settings and privacy,» then select «Account.»

Backup Twitter Data First

Delete your Twitter Account

On your computer, launch a browser and log into your Twitter account if you aren’t already. Then click the More button just above the blue “Tweet” button.

Now from the menu that comes up click on Settings and privacy.

On the following screen select Your account > Deactivate your account.

A message will come up telling you some things you need to know if you delete your account. Just like with deleting your Facebook account, your account isn’t just “automatically gone.” There are a few things to note that this page tells you and some things it doesn’t:

Next, type in your account password and click the Deactivate button.

That’s it. You will get a message that your account is deactivated (unfortunately not completely deleted just yet).

A Few More Important Points

Since it’s going to take a month of avoiding logging in. You also need to go through all of your services and apps that integrate with Twitter and make sure that you disconnect them from your account. The same goes for web browsers that automatically log you in when you visit Twitter.com. Everything needs to go, or you might find you’ve accidentally reactivated your account. Make sure to uninstall the app from your phone, too.

Remember that with social media services like Twitter, you and your information are the product. It’s not just a place where you can freely use and remain anonymous. You give up your information that it can sell to third-parties and push targeted advertisements and interests to your timeline.

I don’t think we should be shocked that any FREE service is going to be farming and storing data around usage, relationships and other data we might pump through the service. Nothing is free and everyone needs to make money — including companies that provide these free services. Ad revenue is just 1 say and data aggregation is the other.

Can blame them, I think people just need to be aware of it. Good article Austin. I’m not going to nuke my account but it’s all good to know.

I have been trying for a year to “deactivate” my account. I have followed the steps outlined per Twitter. I have received confirmation that account will be deleted in 30 days. HOWEVER, within 7 days I receive notices from Twitter that account has been reactivated.
This has been going on for almost a year…round and round. Any and all contact information to Twitter does not work (at least what I have found).
So I am not sure what to make of the procedure that Twitter has. For me, it does not work.
Any solutions?

How to Deactivate a Twitter Account

The only way to delete an account is to leave it deactivated for 30 days. At that point, Twitter will fully remove the account from its system. Once the account is removed, all your tweets will leave the Twitter servers permanently. You can hide tweets prior to taking the steps to deactivate the account.

Start the process of deleting your account by signing into Twitter. Then follow these steps:

Select More in the list on the left side of your Twitter profile.

In the menu that appears, select Settings and Privacy.

Go to Your Account (Account, in the mobile app) > Deactivate your account.

Twitter lets you know that your tweets will only be saved for 30 days. At that point, your account and all posts you have made on your account will be removed from the Twitter servers permanently. If you wish to proceed, select Deactivate.

Confirm your password and select Deactivate.

Now, do not enter the account for 30 days. At that point, Twitter will remove all your tweets from its servers and your account will be permanently deleted. Other people will be able to use your handle but any tweets you shared previously will not be shown on any new account.

If you do enter the account before the 30 day period ends, you automatically reactivate the account and will need to start all over again with the deactivation process.

Fast Security: Hide Tweets by Going Private

To remove your tweets from prying eyes without deactivating the account at all, you can make your account private. You can still deactivate the account at any point after hiding tweets, however.

Of course, any tweets captured by a screenshot and posted online will still exist. Twitter has no control over what people post on non-Twitter websites.

When you make your account private, the only people who can read your tweets are your followers. No one else can access any of your posts, even if they use Google or another third-party search engine. Taking this step is the quickest way to remove your tweets from the public eye.

In a web browser, log in to Twitter. Select More in the menu.

Select Settings and Privacy.

Select Your Account.

Select Account information and enter your password.

Select Protected Tweets.

Check the box next to Protect my Tweets to go private.

In the Twitter mobile app, go to Menu > Settings and Privacy > Privacy and Safety > turn on Protect Your Tweets.

To prevent a specific person from viewing your tweets, you can block them. However, they’ll still be able to see your posts if they sign out of the platform.

Deactivating vs. Deleting

It is important to distinguish between a deactivated account and a deleted account. In many ways, they are the same: all tweets and all references to the account will leave Twitter within the first few days of deactivation. Other Twitter users will be unable to follow the account or search for the account, including searches for historical tweets made by the account.

You (and anyone else) will also be restricted from using the deactivated account’s username or signing up for a new account using the deactivated account’s email address.

A deactivated account can be reactivated, which will bring back all of those old tweets, but only within 30 days.

The only way to delete an account is to leave it deactivated for 30 days. Once the account is deleted, all tweets leave the Twitter servers permanently. Anyone can use the username for the account, and you can use the same email address to sign up for a new one.

How to Reactivate Your Account

If you log in to the account within 30 days, everything will look normal, as if you never left Twitter. You will then receive an email letting you know your account is active again.

Remember that you won’t receive a prompt asking whether you want your account to be reactivated. It happens seamlessly when you log back in, so if you want your Twitter account deleted permanently, you will need to stay away for at least 30 days.

It is important to know there is no way to suspend or freeze an account permanently. After 30 days, your account will be gone for good. However, you could recreate it with the same username and email address after 30 days. It will simply be missing all of your status updates, and anyone who wants to follow the account must refollow it.
