We Asked Men to Draw Vaginas
Apparently 50 percent of men are unable to locate the vagina. At least, according to a study carried out by cancer charity The Eve Appeal. The survey, which was conducted in anticipation of Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, also found that many men were unable to distinguish between the vagina and the vulva.
If you’re a man who falls on the wrong side of that statistic, the vagina is a muscular canal, usually between six to seven inches, and runs from the cervix to the outside of the body. The vulva, on the other hand, is external and is comprised of the labia, the clitoris and other parts.
So is it really true that half of all men aren’t aware of this? To find out, we went for a walk around east London, found some men and tested their vagina knowledge by asking them to draw one.
Magnus, 25
VICE: Hi mate can you draw a vagina for me please?
Magnus: You want me to draw one?
Yeah, I’d like you to draw one please.
Okay, so… I just need to think. I mean, they’re all different aren’t they?
I guess so.
So you got the clit up here… and some stuff coming off here. I know some people have got sort of different things going on here… and then, like, the labia – it really varies, doesn’t it? I dunno. Obviously you’ve got a bit of hair.
Yeah. Can you point to the vagina in your drawing?
Isn’t just all of it the vagina? I dunno. The inside? Isn’t, like, the vulva the outside? I feel like you know – you’ve done your research. Okay. There we go.
Ben, 32
Would you fancy drawing a vagina for me?
Ben: Yeah, sure, mate. I’m just trying to get my bearings.
Sure, take your time.
I’m just trying to make it a subtle… leg shot.
Okay.
Ah. This is gonna look horrific.
Going all in with the legs?
Yeah… bit of cheek there, too. Looks a bit like bollocks that actually, doesn’t it?
I see what you mean.
Might just draw a handbag here too, maybe. Right – I’m not gonna add to that ’cause it’ll make it look more worse.

Etch a Sketch: Vagina Drawing (own work)
After being interested in work by etch a sketch artists such as Andrea Tilden, I chose to create some work of my own, trying out a second-hand etch a sketch which I bought online.
Realising that using it and erasing it by shaking it still leaves marks, I wanted to minimise these so chose to go straight into the drawing after a brief bit of experimentation.
I considered drawing children’s toys on it but decided to instead draw something more adult which wouldn’t usually be drawn by a young child. I settled on a vagina after my friends suggested it to me, and found a diagram online which I traced onto acetate and used as a guideline for my drawing – changing from blue to pink sharpie so that I could see the drawn line easier behind it.
This drawing process took several hours to complete as I had to get used to using the etch a sketch and work out how to minimise the connecting lines which weren’t part of the lines of the drawing, to make it neater. I kept going over it as I wanted the lines to be dark and obvious. The drawing process got easier as I continued, as I found myself understanding how to turn the knobs ro achieve different line gradients.
I am unsure as to whether I should add shading to my drawing, but I quite like the simplicity of it as it is. Although the lines are wobbly in places, I like the appearance of them, as the medium of an etch a sketch doesn’t require a perfect drawing and instead I think it adds to the character of it and scribbley etch a sketch feel. My finished drawing is shown below:
Perhaps I should try using more etch a sketches to create more drawings, perhaps using these to also experiment with making my etch a a sketch drawings more realistic by adding shading.

How to draw vagina
Female reproductive system has muscular elastic bag like structure called Uterus and pair of ovaries attached to it on either sides.
Uterus opens into vagina through narrow cervical canal. Two tube like structures emerge out of uterus on either sides. These are called oviducts. We can start with basic shape of Uterus, later we go for oviducts and vagina. Let`s start the diagram.
Step 3:
Erase the inner triangle as shown.
Step 4:
Draw a smaller triangle in the middle.
Step 5:
Complete the inner structure of uterus by following
the triangular shape as shown.
SEE E-BOOK FOR COMPLETE STEPS.
Step 6:
Define the tip of uterus as shown to represent cervix.
Step 7:
Draw two tubes out of uterus on either sides as shown.
Step 8:
Continue the curved line of uterus along the oviducts
as shown.
Draw the vagina from the outer surface of cervix as shown.
Step 9:
Complete the inner lining of vagina with folded pattern
