How to edit a page

Wikimedia projects are Wikis, which means that anyone can easily edit any unprotected page and save those changes immediately to that page. After your first edit, you are a Wikipedia editor! To request a change to a protected page, you may use any <> template.

Contents

Introduction

Editing most Wikipedia pages is not very difficult at all. Simply click on the «edit this page» tab at the top of a Wikipedia page (or on a section-edit link). This will bring you to a new page with a text box containing the editable text of the original page. If you just want to experiment, please do so in the sandbox, not here. You should write a short edit summary in the small field below the edit-box. You may use shorthand to describe your changes, as described in the legend, and when you have finished, press the Show preview button to see how your changes will look. You can also see the difference between the page with your edits and the previous version of the page by pressing the «Show changes» button. If you’re satisfied with what you see, be bold and press the Save page button. Your changes will immediately be visible to other Wikipedia users.

You can also click on the «Discussion» tab to see the corresponding talk page, which contains comments about the page from other Wikipedia users. Click on the «+» tab to add a new section, or edit the page in the same way as an article page.

You should remember to sign your messages on talk pages and some special-purpose project pages, but you should not sign edits you make to regular articles. In page histories, the MediaWiki software keeps track of which user makes each change.

Minor edits

Major edits

All editors are encouraged to be bold, but there are several things that a user can do to ensure that major edits are performed smoothly. Before engaging in a major edit, consider discussing proposed changes on the article discussion/talk page. During the edit, if doing so over an extended period of time, the <> tag can reduce the likelihood of an edit conflict. Once the edit has been completed, the inclusion of an edit summary will assist in documenting the changes. These steps will all help to ensure that major edits are well received by the Wikipedia community.

Wiki markup

The wiki markup is the syntax system you can use to format a Wikipedia page; please see Help:Editing for details on it, and Help:Wikitext examples for a longer list of the possibilities of Wikitext.

Links and URLs

Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Italics is a link to a section within another page.

#Links and URLs is a link to another section on the current page.

#example is a link to an anchor that was created using

Automatically hide stuff in parentheses: kingdom.

When adding a comment to a Talk page, you should sign it by adding three tildes to add your user name:

Character formatting [ edit ]

You can also write italic and bold if the desired effect is a specific font style rather than emphasis, as in mathematical formulae:

À Á Â Ã Ä Å
Æ Ç È É Ê Ë
Ì Í Î Ï Ñ Ò
Ó Ô Õ Ö Ø Ù
Ú Û Ü ß à á
â ã ä å æ ç
è é ê ë ì í
î ï ñ ò ó ô
œ õ ö ø ù ú
û ü ÿ

Superscript: x 2 or x²

ε0 = 8.85 × 10 −12 C² / J m.

You can use small text for captions.

Better stay away from big text, unless it’s within small text.

You can strike out deleted material and underline new material.

You can also mark deleted material and using logical markup. For backwards compatibility better combine this potentially ignored new logical with the old physical markup.

Obviously, x² ≥ 0 is true when x is a real number.

The nowiki tag ignores [[Wiki]] »markup». It reformats text by removing newlines and multiple spaces. It still interprets special characters: →

Leading spaces are another way to preserve formatting.

Table of contents

At the current status of the wiki markup language, having at least four headers on a page triggers the TOC to appear in front of the first header (or after introductory sections). Putting __TOC__ anywhere forces the TOC to appear at that point (instead of just before the first header). Putting __NOTOC__ anywhere forces the TOC to disappear. See also compact TOC for alphabet and year headings.

Tables

There are two ways to build tables:

For the latter, and a discussion on when tables are appropriate, see Wikipedia:When to use tables.

NUMBEROFARTICLES is the number of pages in the main namespace which contain a link and are not a redirect, in other words number of articles, stubs containing a link, and disambiguation pages.

CURRENTMONTHNAMEGEN is the genitive (possessive) grammatical form of the month name, as used in some languages; CURRENTMONTHNAME is the nominative (subject) form, as usually seen in English.

In languages where it makes a difference, you can use constructs like <> to convert a word from the nominative case to some other case. For example, <>>> means the same as <>.

Templates

The MediaWiki software used by Wikipedia has support for templates. This means standardized text chunks (such as boilerplate text) can be inserted into articles. For example, typing <> will appear as «This article is a stub. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it.» when the page is saved. See Wikipedia:Template messages for the complete list. Other commonly used templates are: <> for disambiguation pages, <> for spoiler warnings and <> like an article stub but for a section. There are many subject-specific stubs for example: <>, <>, and <>. For a complete list of stubs see Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types.

To start editing, click the Edit tab at the top right of a Wiktionary entry (but, obviously, not until you’ve finished reading this).

The software that powers Wiktionary is designed to make editing as easy as possible, but there are going to be a few strange things. That’s because you can create far more than just plain text.

Contents

Formatting

The single quote (or apostrophe) character ‘ has the following special uses for formatting text:

Basic lines

Links

Linking is one of the main benefits of a wiki like this. Links enable one-click navigation among related pages.

Although we haven’t used many on this page, you will often see blue text around, or occasionally red text. These are both links: the blue indicates that an entry exists (though not necessarily in the right language), the red that the entry does not exist yet and may need creating.

Words in lists always get linked, otherwise there is little point in having the list. Deciding when to use links in prose requires a bit of judgment; more detailed guidance may be found at Wiktionary:Links.

Here are some basics of how to make links. Although basic links are simple, linking effectively can be much neater, so a quick whiz through how to link:

Headings

Special characters

You might also want to add characters you can’t type because they aren’t on your keyboard. You will almost certainly find any character you need in the box below the “Save page” button in editing mode. Just select the set of characters you need and have your pick. For a complete list of Unicode characters, look here: http://www.unicode.org/charts/

Templates

One often encounters cryptic abbreviations enclosed by double curly brackets in the code. These are templates and automatically substitute text into the code. So if you need the same piece of code on many pages, creating a template might be a good idea. The string <> will cause the page to be displayed as if the content of the page [[Template:xyz]] had been in its place. An example is Template:rfc which indicates that a page has been marked for clean-up on Wiktionary:Requests for cleanup. See Wiktionary:Index to templates.

Signing

If you are involved in a discussion, be it on a talk page or on a page such as Wiktionary:Requests for deletion, it is considered good manners to sign your (user) name at the end of your post. Signing is most easily done by typing four tildes (

), which will automatically be converted into your username (linked to your user page) and a UTC time stamp.

But of course you never sign the actual dictionary entries as they are considered the collaborative work of many editors like you.

Templates [ edit ]

This site (and page) really needs a Page Template. And I’m not talking about those little <<>> things that are called «templates» in Wiki; I’m talking about a full «straw-man / fill-in-the-blanks» template page. Wiktionary:Article template 128.107.253.41 05:52, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Linking to Wikipedia [ edit ]

The suggestion for linking to Wikipedia seems not to be in-line with current practice.

In addition, is there some way of automatically generating the Link to Wikipedia article on. text which does seem to be used currently, to save it being repeated (and taking up bytes!) on every page that contains a link? trunkie 14:19, 11 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Nice rewrite [ edit ]

Linking to a particular definition [ edit ]

Is there a facility to link to a particular wicktionary definition, rather than simply one of the part of speech section headers?

interlanguage [ edit ]

This is me or there is not yet a way to make link from one language subdomain to an other? Could be useful for heading like ===Translations===. For exemple, see Happy_New_Year. Someone have try to link unexisting english entries to original language ones but this work is actualy lost even if it was, I think, a good idea. In wikis, multilingualism is at its very beginning. No multilingual account, got to manage an account by spoken language. No multinlingual search nor the possibility to ask to do the same search in an other language. I constantly have to re-type the subdomain myself to quickly switch from languages to languages. w:fr:Utilisateur:Lacrymocéphalefr:w:Utilisateur:Lacrymocéphale (a consequence: no possibility to aim a wikipedia page of an other language) 82.245.156.14 20:00, 3 January 2008 (UTC) Reply [ reply ]

I’m sorry for having mixing subjects.

Misleading example of linking in Links section [ edit ]

But, I have just re-visited Wiktionary:Entry_layout_explained#Definitions and see a clear instruction: «The key terms of a definition should be wikified.» This sent me back to check Help:FAQ#Wikifying again, and this article. Now I see Help:FAQ#Wikifying is talking about example sentences: «None of the words in example sentences or quotations should be wikified.»

Manners in Signing section [ edit ]

Being a positive sort of fellow myself, I have taken the bold liberty of putting the reference to manners in the Signing section in the positive mode. I’ll cite copiously if you like, but I think it’s common knowledge now that the attitudes and behaviour you want and expect are the ones you should talk about. DDO wiki uses Mediawiki to fuel its fan-powered goodness! You can Google Mediawiki for more info on this wiki software.

Welcome [ edit ]

Firstly let us welcome you to the wiki, just like all those that have, do and will edit the wiki you’ve decided to give something back to the community by making an addition to the combined knowledge compiled here.

General [ edit ]

To edit a DDO wiki page, click on the «Edit» link at top of the page. This will bring you to a page with a text box containing the «wikitext» (the editable source code from which the server produces the webpage). For the special codes, see below.

After adding to or changing the wikitext it is best practice to press «Preview», which produces the corresponding webpage in your browser but does not make it publicly available yet (not until you press «Save»). Errors in formatting, links, tables, etc., are often much easier to discover from the rendered page than from the raw wikitext.

If you are not satisfied you can make more changes and preview the page as many times as necessary. Then write a short edit summary in the small text field below the edit-box and when finished press «Save». Depending on your system, pressing the «Enter» key while the edit box is not active (i.e., there is no typing cursor in it) may have the same effect as pressing «Save».

You may find it more convenient to copy and paste the text first into your favorite text editing program (e.g. notepad++), edit and spell check it there, and then paste it back into your web browser to preview. This way, you can also keep a local backup copy of the pages you have edited. It also allows you to make changes offline, but before you submit your changes, please make sure nobody else has edited the page since you saved your local copy (by checking the page history), otherwise you may accidentally revert someone else’s edits. If someone has edited it since you copied the page, you’ll have to merge their edits into your new version. These issues are handled automatically by the Mediawiki software if you edit the page online, retrieving and submitting the wikicode in the same text box.

Dummy edit [ edit ]

If the wikitext is not changed no edit will be recorded and the edit summary is discarded.

Minor edits [ edit ]

When to use this is somewhat a matter of personal preference. The rule of thumb is that an edit of a page that consists of spelling corrections, formatting, and minor rearranging of text should be flagged as a «minor edit». A major edit is basically something that makes the entry worth revisiting for somebody who wants to watch the article rather closely. So any «real» change, even if it is a single word, should be flagged as a «major edit».

The reason for not allowing a user who is not logged in to mark an edit as minor is that vandalism could then be marked as a minor edit, in which case it would stay unnoticed longer. This limitation is another reason to log in.

The wiki markup [ edit ]

In the left column of the table below, you can see what effects are possible. In the right column, you can see how those effects were achieved. In other words, to make text look like it looks in the left column, type it in the format you see in the right column.

You may want to keep this page open in a separate browser window for reference. If you want to try out things without danger of doing any harm, you can do so in the Sandbox.

Sections, paragraphs, lists and lines [ edit ]

Start your sections with header lines:

A single newline has no effect on the layout.

But an empty line starts a new paragraph.

disables this paragraphing until

or the end of the section)

(in Cologne Blue two newlines and a div tag give just one newline; in the order newline, div tag, newline, the result is two newlines)

You can break lines
without starting a new paragraph.

The XHTML code
is not needed but is good practice, so we use it here.

marks the end of the list.

marks the end of the list.

A manual newline starts a new paragraph.

WARNING If you make it wide, you force the whole page to be wide and hence less readable. Never start ordinary lines with spaces.

Mainly useful for separating threads on Talk pages.

Summarizing the effect of a single newline: no effect in general, but it ends a list item or indented part; thus changing some text into a list item, or indenting it, is more cumbersome if it contains newlines, they have to be removed; see also Wikipedia:Don’t use line breaks on Wikipedia ].

Links, URLs [ edit ]

Thus the link on meta above is to http://meta.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_policy, which is the page with the name «Video policy».

Link to a section on a page, e.g. List_of_cities_by_country#Morocco ; when section editing does not work the link is treated as link to the page, i.e. to the top; this applies for:

The server fills in the part after the | when you save the page. Next time you open the edit box you will see the expanded piped link. A preview interprets the abbreviated form correctly, but does not expand it yet in the edit box. Press Save and again Edit, and you will see the expanded version. The same applies for the following feature.

When adding a comment to a Talk page,

you should sign it. You can do this by adding three tildes for your user name:

or four for user name plus date/time:

MediaWiki User’s Guide: Using redirects Redirect on meta one article title to another by putting text like this in its first line.

«What links here» and «Related changes» can be linked as:

%-+&#?!=()@ \x80-\xFF. If a URL contains a different character it should be converted; for example, ^ has to be written %5E (to be looked up in ASCII). A blank space can also be converted into an underscore.

Greek characters:

α β γ δ ε ζ
η θ ι κ λ μ ν
ξ ο π ρ σ ς
τ υ φ χ ψ ω
Γ Δ Θ Λ Ξ Π
Σ Φ Ψ Ω

HTML Tables [ edit ]

Templates [ edit ]

As part of the wiki’s update to 1.19, we have a section of buttons on the bottom of every page that should streamline and make template usage SOOO much easier. For some details about this, please see the help page for these buttons.

Page protection [ edit ]

In a few cases the link labelled «MediaWiki:Editthispage» is replaced by the text «Protected page» (or equivalents in the language of the project). In that case the page cannot be edited.

Position-independent wikitext [ edit ]

Wikitext for which the result does not depend on the position in the wikitext page:

Separating edits [ edit ]

When moving or copying a piece of text within a page or from another page, and also making other edits, it is useful to separate these edits. This way the diff function can be usefully applied for checking these other edits.
