Одна из проблем, которая нас преследует — мы слишком много времени уделяем абстрактным (внутренним) аспектам работы. Прошедшие месяцы мы интенсивно работали — но клиенты практически не видели результатов работы, т.к. переписывались и адаптировались к высоким нагрузкам (в тысячи операций в секунду) внутренние компоненты облака.

Наконец, дошли руки и до простых вещей — мы реализовали в интерфейсе возможность увеличивать размер дисков (в т.ч. системного).

Реальной работы — два часа в панельке, ещё несколько часов на проверку, что всё работает как положено. Но — не хватало времени и рук. Наконец, нашлось время, сделали.

Как это сделать?

Диск не должен быть заблокирован, то есть либо отключен от виртуальной машины, либо сама виртуальная машина должна быть выключена. (Если у вас в панели управления облаком нет кнопки «увеличить» — обновите страницу — кешированный JS).

Опция изменения размера дисков — в разделе «Диски» для подключенных дисков, и в разделе «неподключенные диски» для неподключенных. Размер диска задаётся в мегабайтах. Лимит на размер диска — 1.7Тб, общее число дисков, которое может быть подключено к машине — 15 шт.

Важно: диск увеличивается как блочное устройство — мы не получаем доступа к файловым системам клиентов и не делаем ресайз разделов.

После увеличения размера диска вам нужно:

А уменьшать?

Увы, нет. Причин несколько, основная: это опасно. Это ОЧЕНЬ опасно. Если резать диск — то с конца. Причём, не глядя на файловую систему. С шансом намертво потерять данные (потому что в силу особенностей blktap данные на отрезанном кусочке теряются навсегда).

Вторая — ресайз файловой системы вниз — это задача не для слабонервных (особенно, корневой файловой системы), плюс, это огромная нагрузка на диск (которая будет стоить столько, что сделать 2-3 полные копии диска будет дешевле).

Фрагментация?

Возникает, но, благодаря размеру PE у используемого у нас LVM, очень несущественная — минимальный кусок будет 4Мб в длину. Плюс, с точки зрения нашего хранилища всё равно у нас идут конкурентные запросы в разные места хранения, так что разницы по производительности быть не должно.

It can’t be better if you can extend C: drive partition in Windows 2012 server when it is getting full. Nobody likes to waste a long time to recreate partitions and restore everything from backup. With right tool, you can add more free space to C: drive from another partition fast and safely. To extend C drive in Server 2012 (R2), there are 3 kinds of tools: Diskpart (native command), Disk Management (native with GUI) and NIUBI Partition Editor (3rd party program). In this article, I’ll introduce detailed steps to extend C drive in Windows Server 2012 (R2) with these tools, select corresponding method according to your own disk partition configuration.

1. Extend C drive with Server 2012 diskpart command

To extend C drive in Windows Server 2012 R2 with either native tool, you must delete the contiguous partition on the right in advance. I’ll explain the reason in next section.

Steps to extend C: drive in Windows Server 2012 (R2) with Diskpart cmd:

2. Extend C drive partition with Server 2012 Disk Management

Disk Management has graphic interface, so it’s more user friendly than diskpart command. However, the same with Diskpart, you must delete D: drive before expanding C, too. This is because:

Unallocated space that shrunk from D drive is nonadjacent to C drive, therefore, «Extend Volume» option is grayed out.

If you want to extend C drive in Server 2012 (R2) without any software, you must delete D to get adjacent Unallocated space.

One more point, D drive must be Primary partition, otherwise, «Extend Volume» is still disabled for C drive after deleting D.

How to extend C drive in Server 2012 R2 with Disk Management:

Make sure there are no programs or Windows services installed in D drive. If you can delete it, remember to transfer files in advance.

3. Extend C drive in Server 2012 with safe partition software

Better than other disk partition software, NIUBI Partition Editor has Virtual Mode, Cancel-at-well and 1 Second Rollback technologies to protect your system and data. In addition, its advance file-moving algorithm helps resize partition 30% to 300% faster. This is very important especially when there are large amount of files in the partitions to be shrunk or moved.

① How to extend C drive partition with free space on the same disk

Download this program and you’ll see the main window with disk partition layout and detailed information of each volume. Right click any partition or front of a disk, you’ll see available operations. To keep the interface clean, unavailable operations are hidden automatically.

In most of servers, there are other partitions on the same system disk. You just need to shrink this partition to get Unallocated space and then add to C drive. To do this, you just need to click, drag and drop.

Steps to extend C drive in Windows Server 2012 R2 with NIUBI Partition Editor:

If you already shrunk D drive with Disk Management, or if you want to get free space from the non adjacent partition E. You should move Unallocated space to the left before adding to C drive.

If you use any types of hardware RAID array such as RAID 1/5/6/10, do not break array or do any operations to RAID controller, simply follow the step above.

② How to enlarge Server 2012 C drive with another disk

If there’s unavailable free space on the same disk, no software can extend C drive by moving free space from another separate disk. You have 2 choices in this situation, follow the steps in the videos.

1: Copy disk to a larger one and expand C drive with extra disk space.

2: Move a partition to another disk, then delete it and add its space to C drive.

③ How to extend C drive in Server 2012 VM in VMware/Hyper-V

Nowadays, virtual machines are widely used. If you want to extend C drive running Server 2012 in VMware/Hyper-V/Virtualbox, the steps are the same except when entire disk is full. In that case, follow the methods below to expand virtual disk:

Additional space will be shown as Unallocated at the end of original virtual disk, so you don’t have to move partition or copy disk to another one.

To extend C drive partition in Windows Server 2012/2016/2019/2022 and previous Server 2003/2008, just select one of the methods according to your own disk partition configuration. Besides shrinking, moving and extending partition, NIUBI Partition Editor helps you do many other disk partition management operations.

How to Enlarge a Virtual Machine’s Disk in VirtualBox or VMware

When you create a virtual hard disk in VirtualBox or VMware, you specify a maximum disk size. If you want more space on your virtual machine’s hard disk later, you’ll have to enlarge the virtual hard disk and partition.

Note that you may want to back up your virtual hard disk file before performing these operations — there’s always a chance something can go wrong, so it’s always good to have backups. However, the process worked fine for us.

Update: Use the Virtual Media Manager in VirtualBox

VirtualBox 6 added a graphical option for enlarging and resizing virtual disks. To access it, click File > Virtual Media Manager in the main VirtualBox window.

Select a virtual hard disk in the list and use the “Size” slider at the bottom of the window to change its size. Click “Apply” when you’re done.

You will still have to enlarge the partition on the disk to take advantage of the additional space. The partition remains the same size even while the disk size increases. See the instructions below for more information on enlarging the partition.

Enlarge a Virtual Disk in VirtualBox with the Command Line

To enlarge a virtual disk in VirtualBox, you’ll need to use the VBoxManage command from a Command Prompt window. First, shut down the virtual machine — ensure its state is set to Powered Off, not Saved.

Note: Before continuing, you should also delete any snapshots associated with the virtual machine if you use the snapshots feature in VirtualBox. This will ensure you’re modifying the correct virtual disk file and that everything will work properly afterward.

Second, open a Command Prompt window from your Start Menu and change the directory to VirtualBox’s program files folder. Run the command:

The following command will operate on the VirtualBox virtual disk located at “C:\Users\Equinox\VirtualBox VMs\Windows 10\Windows 10.vdi”. It will resize the virtual disk to 81920 MB (80 GB).

Note: Use two dashes before resize in the command above.

Replace the file path in the command above with the location of the VirtualBox disk you want to resize and the number with the size you want to enlarge the image to (in MB).

Note: In VirtualBox 6.0+, released in 2019, you may need to use the following command instead:

Note that this process doesn’t enlarge the partition on the virtual hard disk, so you won’t have access to the new space yet — see the Enlarge the Virtual Machine’s Partition section below for more information.

Enlarge a Virtual Disk in VMware

To enlarge a virtual machine’s hard disk in VMware, power off the virtual machine, right-click it, and select Virtual Machine Settings.

Select the virtual hard disk device in the list, click the Utilities button, and click Expand to expand the hard disk.

Enter a larger maximum disk size and click the Expand button. VMware will increase the size of your virtual disk, although its partitions will remain the same size — see below for information on enlarging the partition.

Enlarge the Virtual Machine’s Partition

You now have a larger virtual hard disk. However, the operating system’s partition on your virtual hard disk is the same size, so you won’t be able to access any of this space yet.

You’ll now need to extend the guest operating system’s partition as if you were enlarging a partition on a real hard disk in a physical computer. You can’t enlarge the partition while the guest operating system is running, just as you can’t enlarge your C:\ partition while Windows is running on your computer.

You can use a GParted live CD to resize your virtual machine’s partition — simply boot the GParted ISO image in your virtual machine and you’ll be taken to the GParted partition editor in a live Linux environment. GParted will be able to enlarge the partition on the virtual hard disk.

Load the ISO file into your virtual machine by going into the virtual machine’s settings window, selecting your virtual CD drive, and browsing to the ISO file on your computer.

Boot (or restart) your virtual machine after inserting the ISO image and the virtual machine will boot from the ISO image. GParted’s live CD will ask you several questions while booting — you can press Enter to skip them for the default options.

Once GParted is booted, take a look at how the virtual drive is partitioned.

Warning: Not all operating systems will result in drives that are partitioned this way, however there is a good chance you’ll see something similar. Make sure you pay attention to the existing partitions when you’re doing this — carelessly resizing, reformatting, or deleting a partition can result in an inoperable virtual machine.

The arrangement of the partitions is extremely important. There are three partitions on the drive, plus 30 gigabytes of unallocated space.

The first partition, sda1, is the boot sector or the EFI System Partition. The second partition, sda2, is the “primary partition.” It is the space allocated to the Windows operating system — that is the partition we want to expand. It is noted with the red arrow and red box in the picture above.

Tip: Generally speaking, you can identify your primary partition by the size — it’ll be close to the total size of the original virtual drive you created.

Make sure to note that there is a third partition, sda3, directly between the partition you want to resize and the unallocated space we created previously. The position of sda3 means that we cannot just expand sda2 into the unallocated space. The third partition is literally in the way, and we’re going to have to move it first.

Right-click on sda3, then click “Resize/Move.”

Note: It might not be sda3 for you. You’re just looking for whatever partition is between the primary partition and unallocated space.

A new window will appear that lets you move the partition.

Take note of what the screen says. There are 30,722 megabytes of space following the msftres partition. If you want sda3 to be out of the way, we need to move sda3 all the way to the other side of the available space. Click on the “Free Space Preceding” box, enter “30722” into the field, then click “Resize/Move.” It should look like this:

Now sda3 is queued to be moved to the end of the unallocated space, and we can also set sda2 to be resized. Right-click sda2, then click “Resize/Move.”

Enter the number after “Maximum Size” into the “New Size” field, or drag the right-hand side of the slider all the way to the right.

If you’ve done it correctly, you should the value for “Maximum Size” in the “New Size” box now. Click “Resize/Move” to finalize the change.

Click the green check mark button near the top to apply all of the changes you’ve made. Applying the changes can take a few minutes, depending on how many move or resize operations you have queued, and how fast your computer is. Don’t be alarmed if you have to wait a while.

After the resize operation completes, restart your virtual machine and remove the GParted ISO file. Windows will check the file system in your virtual machine to ensure it’s working properly — don’t interrupt this check.

The virtual machine’s partition will now take up the entire virtual hard disk, so you’ll have access to the additional space.

Note that there are easier ways to get more storage — you can add a second virtual hard disk to your virtual machine from its settings window. You can access the other hard disk’s contents on a separate partition — for example, if you’re using a Windows virtual machine, the other virtual hard disk will be accessible at a different drive letter inside your virtual machine.

A Brief Introduction to Virtual Machine of VMware Workstation

VMware Workstation is a program which makes it possible for users to set up one or more virtual machines on a single physical machine or run multiple operating systems simultaneously.

A virtual machine is an emulation of a particular computer system and operates based on the computer architecture and functions of a real or hypothetical computer. Each virtual machine works separately and functions like a real machine.

If you want to run virtual machine successfully, specialized hardware, software, and system should be involved. Well then, how to set up a virtual machine?

How to Create Virtual Machine on VMware Workstation

After the ISO file of operating system has been downloaded and VMware Workstation has been installed, you can follow the steps as below to create a virtual machine:

Step 1. Launch VMware Workstation. Then you need to choose Create a New Virtual Machine.

Step 2. Then, choose a type of configuration and click Next to continue. It is recommended to choose Typical.

Step 3. Then you will get the interface below. Now you can install guest operating system either from installer disc, or from installer disc image file (ISO).

Of course, you can also choose to install it latter. And here we select the second one since there is no drive available: click Browse… to select the downloaded ISO file from physical machine, and then click Next.

Step 4. Select a guest operating system (the system you want to install for virtual machine), and click Next.

Step 5. Next, name the virtual machine and appoint it with a location on physical machine. Then click Next.

Step 6. After these steps, we need to set virtual hard drive capacity (a virtual hard disk can function like a physical hard disk, so it can be used to save different kinds of files, too). Then click Next.

The maximum disk size will be set to be smaller by default (may be 60GB), but we can change it by typing the exact value.

However, some users may click Next directly to continue rather than reset a new hard disk capacity. As a result, they get a very small hard disk which may be out of space after a period of time.

Under this situation, users badly need to increase virtual machine disk size. Well then, how to add disk VMware workstation or increase virtual machine disk size? We will introduce detailed steps after the problem how to create virtual machine is solved.

Step 7. Once the hard disk capacity is set, we need to configure hardware for this virtual machine. We can either click Finish to employ default hardware configuration or customize it, which depends on our own demands.

It’s amazing that users can add disk VMware workstation and increase virtual machine disk size without replacing physical hard disks, and it can be completed from the GUI (Graphical User Interface) of VMware Workstation.

Next let’s see how to increase hard disk space in VMware virtual machine and how to add disk VMware workstation and with detailed steps.

1. Expand Virtual Hard Drive in VMware Workstation

Step 1. Choose Hard Disk under Devices.

2. Add New Virtual Hard Disk for Virtual Machine

On one virtual machine, we can configure it with multiple hard disks to increase storage capacity, and detailed steps are as follows.

Step 1. Open the VMware Workstation and open a virtual machine from the physical hard disk to get the following window. Then choose Hard Disk under the Devices item since we need to add hard disk rather than any other hardware component.

Step 2. In this interface, select Hard Disk and click Add button.

Step 3. In the list of Hardware types, select Hard Disk and click Next.

Step 4. Follow the step-by-step instruction to add hard disk to VMware virtual machine and set capacity for the new virtual hard disk according to our demands. At last, click OK to apply all previous changes.

Now the new disk has been added. At this time, as long as we open the virtual machine and initialize the new disk to either MBR or GPT in Disk Management utility, we can use it to save data.

This is how VMware increase disk size. Actually, there is still another way to increase hard disk capacity, and it is to make use of the command prompt tool, but this way requires complex operations and professional knowledge so that we are easy to make mistakes.

However, though the entire hard disk has been enlarged or a new disk has been added, the added space is the form of unallocated space.

So how can we make use of the expanded hard disk space in virtual machine? There are 2 choices: one is to create a new partition, and the pother is to extend an existing partition to it.

How to Make Use of the Increased Hard Disk Space in Virtual Machine

Create New Simple Volume in Virtual Hard Disk

To use this space, we can open the corresponding virtual machine, and then enter Windows snap-in Disk Management utility.

Nevertheless, most of the time we are more inclined to extend an existing partition to the increased space rather than create new partitions since existing partitions (especially the partition C) are easy to run out of disk space. Next, let’s see how to extend a partition.

If your virtual machine is running Windows Vista or more recent Windows operating systems like Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012, try extending partition in Disk Management, because these operating systems provide the function Extend Volume.

Nevertheless, there are 2 big limitations in this function: it cannot extend a primary partition to non-adjacent unallocated space; the partition we want to extend should be formatted with NTFS or RAW. In other words, the increased space can only be added to the last primary partition.

Therefore, we had better look for other ways to extend partitions of virtual hard disk, for example, using a third-party software.
