Step by step tucking guide

First: Let’s talk fit

To get the best fit, you’ll want to give some thought as to where on the front of your body you start when applying the T-Tape. Starting lower is better. Lower application in the front of the body will give you more material to work with as you pull it all back for a better fit that stays in place. Starting lower also ensures there is enough width in the front to hold a tuck in place. T-Tape measures 11.5 inches long right out of the box and stretches up to 180% to 21 inches total. It’s a one-size solution designed for comfort.

Peel a little

Carefully peel away a small section of the wide end of the T-tape. The section you expose should be about two fingers in width. Keep the rest of the T-tape backing on. (If you peel the entire backing, it will be more difficult to apply.)

Doll: When I was just a little boy dressing in women’s clothing, fantasizing about becoming a woman, I would scour the city’s gay clubs for the exquisite creatures known as Drag Queens and transvestites. I was bewildered and eager to know how they flawlessly put away their «package,» if you know what I mean. I also did my research online to learn everything I could about the art of tucking, but it’s really different when you are given a firsthand tutorial—kinda like CPR—you really don’t get the hang of it unless someone shows you.

Let’s take it from the master herself—in RuPaul’s book Lettin’ It All Hang Out she outlines the perfect tuck.

This is what you do; you put your tucking panties on. There are different types of tucking panties, such as specially made things called «gaff,» but I prefer to use girl’s bikini bottoms. Mine are size small and made out of very tight woven Spandex. Then you take your penis (preferably your non erect penis), and pull it back toward your butthole, pushing everything—balls and all—backward.

But one wrong move can have the effect of a nutcracker and make the strongest of drag queens shriek, «Girl, call me a cab.»

I was told by drag queens (who are not taking hormones) that their best friends—after tweezers and magnifying mirrors—are heavy-duty duct tape, scissors, Advil, and their trusty gaff.

A gaff (right) is a clothing item designed to give the male wearer a clean line while wearing a dress by hiding the genitals. It’s similar in appearance to thong underwear. During the early stages of my self-discovery, I had to learn how to hide my little secret using those exact basics. Excruciatingly painful at first, but, in time, the body gets used to all the packing and stuffing that’s going on. However, after years of practice and dedication, I am proud to say that I have graduated and now need little support in neatly putting unnecessary things away. It all comes—and goes—with time. One of my transgendered mentors can perform jumping jacks without having her skin extension exposed. And now as if a miracle has touched me in a very special place—goodbye gaffs, hello women’s lingerie!!

My Asian girlfriend, Kylie, who insists that our destinies are not only intertwined but interchanged—the girl is truly a gay man stuck in a woman’s body—shares my interest in fine lingerie. I prefer undies that tie at the side because you can adjust the tightness accordingly. Usually this specific type of lingerie is reserved for special occasions, ergo it is found in specialty boutiques that cater to such moments—or for the «kinky bitches of the world» as Kylie would say. Since it’s absolutely necessary for me to use underpinnings that aren’t just barely there, but also very well-constructed—for the necessary support—quality goes a long way to getting the job done.

Kylie takes it to a completely different level. I was sifting through her lingerie chest when I found a curious little creature amongst her silk and lace. It was a leather dog mask by Ilya Fleet. Just goes to show that people express themselves in different ways.

Her are places where I find my sexy little things:

Gaffs: I only used them when I was just a boy in a dress. I’ve graduated since then because practice makes perfect!

Tie-sides: I use tie-sides when I’m wearing sheer dresses because pantylines are a big fashion no-no. I have them in all the colors of the rainbow.

Shaper briefs: Itsy bitsy boy shorts I wear for day-to-day activities.

If you have a belly like me, dressing can be a challenge sometimes, as your tummy might often make you feel self-conscious. After many years of trial and error, here’s the 21 best clothing hacks I have tried and they can instantly hide your belly!

Avoid Body Con Silhouette

If you have a belly, you should avoid a body con silhouette from top to bottom. In other words, if your top is tight, avoid wearing it with a tight bottom.

If you wear a tight top with a skinny bottom, your tummy will look much more obvious.

Instead, if your top is tight, wear a looser fit skirt or pants to camouflage your belly, and vice versa.

Create 3 Columns of Colors

This is genius stylist hack for you to hide that tummy effortlessly!

The first step is to make sure your under layer forms one column of color, i.e. you should pair a darker color top with a darker color jeans or pants (or even skirts).

Black is known for slimming effect. but your underlayer does not have to be black. It can be any darker color you like such as navy, grey, brown etc.

The next step is where the magic happens- top it over with a lighter color outer layer, it can be a jacket, a cardigan or a coat.

It is critical to wear it open front, so that the lighter jacket and your dark under layer forms 3 columns of colors in the front to divide up your “tummy”. This is how you can instantly disguise your belly!

No skinny belt

Okay, this one is a common mistake that I see a lot of women making. Often times, stylists suggest short women to use skinny belt, because it sounds logical that smaller belts should go well with smaller women. However, not all petites are skinny. If you are a curve girl, skinny belt actually looks out of proportion on you.

Worse yet, if you are wearing skinny belt with contrasting color to your outfit, they immediately draws all the attention to your belly! So, to me, skinny belts are one of the least flattering accessories you could wear if you are trying to hide your muffin top.

Wear Peplum

Peplum design, whether it’s peplum dresses or peplum tops, work wonders to camouflage your belly!
Because the peplum flares out, no one will be able to see your stomach since they are now covered by the ruffles.

The key is to be selective with the peplum, as they are not all the same.

You need to make sure the ruffles are long enough to cover the biggest part of your tummy. Otherwise, if the peplum is too short, they may actually be drawing more attention to your stomach instead of hiding it.

Wear asymmetrical hem

Asymmetrical hem is an effortless way to hide your tummy.

This type of design will make your belly less noticeable because one side is longer and one side shorter.

High waisted everything

High waist works magic when it comes to hiding belly fat! Whether it is high waist jeans, pants or skirts, if you have a heavier mid section, they will smooth out for you very nicely, like this High Rise Skinny Jeans ($79.00)

Since I’m an apple shape, I have all things high waisted in my closet when it comes to the bottoms! They are my go-to and I live in them year round. When I put on the high waist jeans or pants, I can instantly feel the waist area get smoothed out, which will make me feel much more comfortable and less conscious about the mid section.

If you are petite, a huge bonus of wearing high waist style is that they also improve your proportion and make your legs look longer!

Ruched design

Ruching is the most genius design in fashion in my opinion. They are heaven-sent for women looking for clothes to hide belly.

I personally own many dresses like these with ruching on the waist, because they are incredibly flattering for women with heavier midsections, like this 3/4-Sleeve Ruched Dress ($79.50).

Not only dresses, but some tops also have ruching, which is also an excellent choice for women looking to hide the muffin top.

Wear shift dress

For ladies who want a dress to hide belly, you will love the shift dress for two reasons.

First, the silhouette is straight up and down, so it balances out your curves, like this Crepe Shift Dress ($46.97).

Second, the shift dress has plenty of space so it will move as you do, avoiding drawing attention to your belly.

If you are looking for dresses to hide your belly, a shift dress should be your top choice!

Avoid paper bag

This is one of the hottest trends right now, and you see paper bag style pants on every fashion blogger. The issue is the focus of this kind of style is the paper bag waist.

As cute as they are, they draw all the attention to your belly and can make you look heavier! If your intention is to wear clothes to hide belly fat, this is the opposite of what you want!

Avoid button front jeans

Again, another very trendy item!

Personally, I think the button fly jeans are the cutest design ever and I adore them. The issue here is the buttons are designed to draw attention to your belly. So, if you do not what everyone to notice your love handles, then is style is probably not a good idea.

Avoid anything too tight

This may sound too obvious but not everyone knows it (I didn’t, for years!).

Many apple shaped women like myself have skinny arms and legs but heavier mid section. Since I am an overall skinny person, bodycon dresses were my favorite for years, without realizing that they are too tight for the belly area, let alone to hide anything!

Whenever something is very tight on you, it highlights everything, including the muffin top.

Avoid oversized clothing

So, this is the opposite of wearing something too tight- this to wear something too loose.

Even if you want to hide the belly, you still need clothing with a shape and structure. If you wear something that is too big, first they make you look like you are swimming in it and second it could leave people wondering if you are trying to hide something.

Especially if you are petite, you should never wear anything too oversized, because they could totally swallow your short frame.

Avoid thin fabrics

Fabrics is the key factor of how any clothes looks on you. Thin fabrics tend to stretch out more than the thicker ones and they look cheap.

Avoid sheer fabrics

Sheer fabrics adds the illuminating effect to your outfit. They are good for certain occasions like parties but that’s pretty much it. If you are looking for outfit to hide your belly, in general you should go with something that shrinks your mid section and avoid sheer fabrics which adds more volume to you overall.

Careful with tucking shirt

If you are petite, it’s generally a good idea to tuck in your shirt under they pants or skirts. However, you have to be very careful with tucking if you are trying to hide the muffin top.

When you are tucking, your mid section probably will become the first thing that people notice on you, especially when you are wearing a top and bottom with contrasting colors. So, tucking is not recommended for women concerned about hiding the muffin top.

Wear empire waist carefully

I want to recommend empire waist to curvy women, but, I suggest using this one with caution.

Normally, stylists suggest you wear this to hide your belly. It’s not that it doesn’t do the job, but it oftentimes gives you that pregnant look if you know what I mean.

Not all empire waist dresses or tops are designed equally. There are some that are not so exaggerated as to remind someone of a maternal dress.

Try on as many as possible to find the design with a modest design that hides your belly strategically without giving that pregnant look, like this Cut out Midi Dress ($120.00).

Layer smartly

If you are looking for clothes to hide belly fat, laying is an art. I suggest you go with a longer cardigan on top of a blouse or shirt that is not too tight.

In order to get the best slimming effect, you should layer with a contrast. Either wear a darker under layer and brighter outer layer, or vice versa. The contrast it creates will trick the eye into believing your waist is smaller than it actually is. You can try this Women’s Marl Longline Cardigan ($109.00).

Wear loose long shirts with tights

Another flattering way to layer is to pair a longer top, like a tunic sweater like this Cotton Turtleneck Sweater ($10.95).

The billowy design of the top will make people notice less about your belly, and the tight leggings will balance out the loose effect of the top.

You probably should not try to pair a billowy top with loosely fitted pants, because that is adding too much volume to your top and bottom will only make you look swelling overall. That is especially not flattering if you are also short because they will make you look horizontally expanded and vertically shrunk!

Wear supportive bras

Most women with bigger bellies also have bigger boobs. Your girls are your assets. When you wear a good-quality bra with nice support, the lifted chest will make your waistline look slimmer!

On the other hand, if you wear a bra without much support, then not only would your boobs look sagging, but also it could look like your waist and chest lacks a clear definition. That is especially unflattering for short women because our torso is shorter.

Wear pants and jeans with built in panels

If you want to hide your belly, I highly recommend you try the pants and jeans with a built-in waistband.

Second, they work like built-in shapewear. They can really smooth out your waist area without having to wear separate shapes.

Be selective with shape wear

Finally, I want to talk about shape wear. A lot of us (myself included) have mixed feelings about them.

If you are looking for clothing to hide belly, do you need some shape wear in your closet? Absolutely yes!

The flip side is that some of them are not very comfortable to wear, especially not for all day wear.

Another thing I notice about shape wear is that they do not necessarily make your belly look smaller, because all they do is to push that belly fat to a bigger area that it won’t look as prominent.

With that said, shape wear does smooth out your belly area, so they are a good choice for if you are looking for an outfit for an event.

There is also different types of shapewear. It depends on your body shape in order to chose tts the right type for you.

For instance, a top with fitted waist band works the best for my body. In comparison, just the shapewear pantries normally doesn’t do anything for me.

So, I. do think you should take the time to try on different brands of shape wear and find out what works for your body.

I often get asked about shapewear for petites, so far I have not come across a brand with a dedicated petite line. I have been trying different shape wear to test which is petite friendly, and will share my results in a separate post.

These are my best tips for women interested in clothes that hides belly. Like always, we all have slightly different body that is unique, so it’s always the case some will work while some won’t work for you. I hope most of them can help you!
