To use the commands, you will need the developer console.
You can activate the console if you click on ‘Options’ in the ESC menu.

The standart key to bring up the console is ‘

You can change the key if you scroll all the way down in the Keyboard tab!

There some annoying things that prevent you from making Garry’s Mod machinimas.
Such as the HUD (Health/Ammo display) or the Death notification!

You can turn it off by typing in: cl_drawhud 0
or turn it on by typing in: cl_drawhud 1

You can bind keys to the command, for example i use the keys ‘K’ and ‘L’:
bind k «cl_drawhud 0» / bind l «cl_drawhud 1»

The easiest way to hide/display these things is to bind a key to TOGGLE them on and off!
for example i use the key ‘O’:
bind o «toggle cl_drawhud 0 1»

Now you only need 1 key to hide/display the HUD!

You can now hide the HUD in the Context Menu (‘C’ Key)

Everytime someone dies in the world, there is a Death notification on the upper right corner which shows the killer and the killed NPC!

You can simply hide/display the notification with the command:
hud_deathnotice_time 0 / hud_deathnotice_time 1

I don’t will show you how to bind a key or toggle this notification because its the same as it is in the HUD command!

There is a command to clear all the decals in the world, very useful if you have bulletholes in your props!

How to Make a health bar HUD

I don’t think there are any tutorials on the subject. I’ll try to explain it for you. Whenever I write a hud, I write a function to draw it. This function can then be easily handed to the game to be drawn on every frame.

Defining «client»

I usually set up a variable to represent the player, then check to see whether the player is dead or not. If the player is dead, it ends the function. The player is referred to as ‘client’ for the rest of the script. Here we can also make the HUD hide if you have your camera out and also as an extra insurance policy tell it that if you have no weapon at all (e.g you are dead) then end here.

Drawing the HUD

With that done, I start drawing the hud. A way I like to start with this is with a particular command.

How to place the HUD

This draws a box on the screen. It has rounded corners, which looks nicer than a sharp corner. The first argument is how round the corners are. 0 is a sharp corner. The next two are coordinates, telling it where to put the box. The next two are the width and height. Lastly is the colour. Just your standard Red, Green, Blue and Alpha values. Next thing I usually do is add the actual information to the hud.

Drawing the text

This command draws text to the screen. First argument is the actual text. Second is the font. The next two are coordinates for the position. Fifth is the colour. The last two are X Align and Y Align. I don’t know what these do. Alternatively, you could use client:Armor() to get the player’s armor, but that doesn’t work right now. It will do in a future update, hopefully. Ammunition in your weapons can be obtained too. I’ll try to explain these in the comments.

Ending the function

That’s the code for the hud explained. Now to make sure it’s drawn. We want to end the function, before we do anything else.

Hello, and welcome to mine (Minty Fresh’s) first tutorial. First off, you might be thinking, «What is a hud?» Well, my answer to that is. A hud is a visual chart, which tells you. Your health, and ammo. But on other games, the hud might include a map. But on Garry’sMod, the hud is just your: Health, Armor (or «suit») and ammo.

CHAPTER 1: Thesaurus

If you come across something throughought the tutorial, and think to yourself, «What the hell does that do/ mean.» You can come to this thesaurus and find out!

CHAPTER 2: Making a simple hud, and positioning

Ok, now we’re going to MAKE a simple hud. What you’re going to see in this hud is: (1) Health bar that indicates our health (2) Text that gives us a more detailed indication of our health. Now, I am going to go through positioning first up! So, i’ve put ScrH and ScrW in the thesaurus, now you need to know HOW to use them. Let’s give you an example. NOTE: Don’t do draw.RoundedBox(0,0, 0 because that won’t work, i’m just explaining what to do, step by step.

Ok, so FIRST, we make our values (So we don’t have to type the LONG version all the time!

CHAPTER 4: Hooks and Functions

Ok, so. This is MY understanding on hooks and functions, I’m not GOOD at lua, huds and derma are the ONLY things I currently know. But my understanding for hooks and functions are: A function, is like a button, with NO wiring, just a button. This button has a whole load of data just waiting to get sent.

And a hook, is pretty much the wiring, once you set up the hook to the function, that button is turned ON, and all the data is being sent.

So pretty much, when we hooked our function hud(), our hud got sent to the game, and made the health bar and text!

This is partially correct. A function is a place where code is held, all this code can be run at once by just executing the function. You execute a function by putting the functionname in your code, along with a parenthesis after that contains all [u]arguments[/u] that should be used. Arguments are like Data you send over to the function, so it doesn’t do same stuff every time it runs, but it adjusts itself to whatever you want.

A hook is like a execute function, but you could have your function execute on certain places you cant edit, such as in the source code for garrysmod. Hooks are therefor there to execute your function for you.

I was playing Gmod, and then all of the HUD disappeared. The health bar, ammo count, weapon select, everything. The menus still work. Before you tell me to disable fast weapon select, I already did that, and I also typed the commands into the dev console, and nothing happened. I tried pressing C and using that menu, didn’t work. I have restarted my game multiple times, my PC has even UPDATED and it is still broken, and I want to find a way to fix it without reinstalling the game. I have only had Gmod on this computer for a day or two. Keep in mind that this problem didn’t appear when I installed it. It happened randomly while I was playing.

I have windows 10, which means I have DirectX 12 (I think)

Over 100 GB of storage

I apologize for sounding like I am raging. If anyone could help, it would be awesome.

EDIT: It turns out that I get this glitch after I publish a dupe, IDK why.

The december update caused it. In my case, it’s fixed by pressing esc and then esc again. I shouldn’t have to do that, but it’s not like the devs will notice because I already tried this when the update was NEW.

Back then, everyone was screaming about their anti-virus crashing/seeing as a virus/stopping gmod from launching and seriously, EVERY SINGLE DISCUSSION was about that. Because of that, the ones without broken anti-viruses that could launch the game ended up being overshadowed and we thought it’d be fixed in the next update.

Fast forward to January the update, and it also happened to be the day the server had issues, so everyone complained about addons, once again silencing the hud people. They aren’t going to notice until they see it properly, and that’s highly doubtful considering how many people pay attention to such a ‘minor’ (minor my butt) issue.
