Children are the cutest human beings on earth. They bring a lot of color and laughter to our lives. However, it does not mean that they don’t throw tantrums. Sometimes, kids do not want to talk or play with strangers or even with people they are acquainted with. If you love kids and you want to make kids love you, here’s how to do it.

1. Relax and enjoy whatever the activity is

We, as adults, usually have a lot of things to do on our mind. Due to this, we get easily irritated when kids don’t immediately follow our instructions. Just relax! Yes, that is one great tip I can give you. When you loosen up, you automatically begin to enjoy the activities and conversation with the kids. They are very smart. They can sense it and will be in love with your company.

2. Respect children

We have somehow come to associate the word respect with older people only. Children are as human as we are and have similar need to get respect from others. When we give someone respect, we listen to what they are saying and value it. Exactly like adults, this is what kids want. To be heard and valued.

3. Act funny

Kids love fun and funny activities, whether it is playing peek-a-boo or hearing sounds that they find funny and can giggle at. Children love to be with those people who have fun with them. Learn a few things that you can use to win favors from kids, like making funny noises or faces, playing hide and seek or producing something that they like all of a sudden in front of them. You will feel the kids absolutely love you!

4. Don’t overdo your display of affection

Sometimes, we overkill. We go out of the way to please kids or show our affection. That puts off the kids. They are good judges of your actions and attitude. Do show affection but don’t overdo it. Occasionally, it is good to let kids be. They will love you for the space that you give to them.

5. Be patient

Just like adults, every kid is different. If we try to interact with them in the same manner or rush them into a conversation, we are bound to be disliked by them. If you want to make kids love you, be careful and patient with every kid. They will become frank with you at their own pace and when they do, trust me, you will enjoy it to the fullest.

6. Don’t try to discipline children all the time:

Who doesn’t like kids with good manners? Every one of us wants kids to be be well-behaved and have great manners. However, this does not mean at all that we try to discipline them all the time. Kids love to be mischievous, roam around, run and play. They will absolutely love you if you give them the margin of being kids.

7. Shower children with compliments

Exactly like adults, kids love to be praised. Whether you appreciate their looks, manners or clothes, they will adore you for it. Of course, you should try to be genuine. Otherwise, kids can always gauge your real feelings. They will love you even more if you praise something that they also like, for instance, a cartoon character on their shoes or t-shirt, their bag adorned with a cartoon or their bottle that is an all time favorite.

8. Take them seriously

The things that kids love might be small or insignificant for you but to them, they are the whole world. When kids try to tell you something or want you to show something, take it very seriously. We think that kids wouldn’t mind us taking them lightly but no, it is not the case. You can instantly win their love and attention by paying attention to their small belongings.

9. Act like a kid yourself

There’s nothing more that kids would worship. Children like the company of other children but that doesn’t mean an adult can’t act like one. Discover your inner child and see the spark of love in the eyes of other kids.

10. Give them presents

Last but not the least; it is a great way to gain a kid’s favor. Obviously, I do not mean to suggest that you always shower the kids with gifts but they get happy with little things like a tiny toy or a favorite sweet. Giving them gifts will make you very likable and they will love you for it.

Rock Arts and Crafts for Kids

Another wonderful material to get creative with are rocks. If you live near a river you can go on a rock hunt on your next nature walk. If that is not an option most craft stores (and dollar stores) will have rocks available for crafting.

Why should you craft with kids? Benefits? What about creativity?

Crafts can be fun! But they might not be for every child. Not everyone is crafty or has interest in crafting and that is absolutely OK.

Crafts and craft tutorials can be followed to a dot, or be taken as inspiration and a base for a open ended creative session.

You make crafts suit you! Some kids enjoy following tutorials and making a project that resembles the “original” – which usually results in a sense of pride, while others are more inclined to take their own route and create something completely different. I ’ve explored the science behind what makes kids happier, what type of parenting works best and what makes for joyful families.

But what makes children — from babies up through the teen years — smarter?

Here are 10 things science says can help:

1) Music Lessons

Plain and simple: research show music lessons make kids smarter:

Compared with children in the control groups, children in the music groups exhibited greater increases in full-scale IQ. The effect was relatively small, but it generalized across IQ subtests, index scores, and a standardized measure of academic achievement.

In fact musical training helps everyone, young and old:

A growing body of research finds musical training gives students learning advantages in the classroom. Now a Northwestern University study finds musical training can benefit Grandma, too, by offsetting some of the deleterious effects of aging.

2) The Dumb Jock Is A Myth

Dumb jocks are dumb because they spend more time on the field than in the library. But what if you make sure your child devotes time to both?

Being in good shape increases your ability to learn. After exercise people pick up new vocabulary words 20% faster.

Indeed, in a 2007 study of humans, German researchers found that people learn vocabulary words 20 percent faster following exercise than they did before exercise, and that the rate of learning correlated directly with levels of BDNF.

A 3 month exercise regimen increased bloodflow to the part of the brain focused on memory and learning by 30%.

In his study, Small put a group of volunteers on a three-month exercise regimen and then took pictures of their brains… What he saw was that the capillary volume in the memory area of the hippocampus increased by 30 percent, a truly remarkable change.

3) Don’t Read To Your Kids, Read With Them

Got a little one who is learning to read? Don’t let them just stare at the pictures in a book while you do all the reading.
Call attention to the words. Read with them, not to them. Research shows it helps build their reading skills:

…when shared book reading is enriched with explicit attention to the development of children’s reading skills and strategies, then shared book reading is an effective vehicle for promoting the early literacy ability even of disadvantaged children.

4) Sleep Deprivation Makes Kids Stupid

Missing an hour of sleep turns a sixth grader’s brain into that of a fourth grader.

“A loss of one hour of sleep is equivalent to [the loss of] two years of cognitive maturation and development,” Sadeh explained.

There is a correlation between grades and average amount of sleep.

Teens who received A’s averaged about fifteen more minutes sleep than the B students, who in turn averaged fifteen more minutes than the C’s, and so on. Wahlstrom’s data was an almost perfect replication of results from an earlier study of over 3,000 Rhode Island high schoolers by Brown’s Carskadon. Certainly, these are averages, but the consistency of the two studies stands out. Every fifteen minutes counts.

5) IQ Isn’t Worth Much Without Self-Discipline

Self-discipline beats IQ at predicting who will be successful in life.

Dozens of studies show that willpower is the single most important keystone habit for individual success… Students who exerted high levels of willpower were more likely to earn higher grades in their classes and gain admission into more selective schools. They had fewer absences and spent less time watching television and more hours on homework. “Highly self-disciplined adolescents outperformed their more impulsive peers on every academic-performance variable,” the researchers wrote. “Self-discipline predicted academic performance more robustly than did IQ. Self-discipline also predicted which students would improve their grades over the course of the school year, whereas IQ did not.… Self-discipline has a bigger effect on academic performance than does intellectual talent.”

Grades have more to do with conscientiousness than raw smarts.

…conscientiousness was the trait that best predicted workplace success. What intrigues Roberts about conscientiousness is that it predicts so many outcomes that go far beyond the workplace. People high in conscientiousness get better grades in school and college; they commit fewer crimes; and they stay married longer. They live longer – and not just because they smoke and drink less. They have fewer strokes, lower blood pressure, and a lower incidence of Alzheimer’s disease.

Who does best in life? Kids with grit.

The best predictor of success, the researchers found, was the prospective cadets’ ratings on a noncognitive, nonphysical trait known as “grit”—defined as “perseverance and passion for long-term goals.”

6) Learning Is An Active Process

In fact, there’s reason to believe they make kids dumber.

The products didn’t work at all. They had no positive effect on the vocabularies of the target audience, infants 17-24 months. Some did actual harm. For every hour per day the children spent watching certain baby DVD’s and videos, the infants understood an average of six to eight fewer words than infants who did not watch them.

Real learning isn’t passive, it’s active.

Our brains evolved to learn by doing things, not by hearing about them. This is one of the reasons that, for a lot of skills, it’s much better to spend about two thirds of your time testing yourself on it rather than absorbing it. There’s a rule of two thirds. If you want to, say, memorize a passage, it’s better to spend 30 percent of your time reading it, and the other 70 percent of your time testing yourself on that knowledge.

7) Treats Can Be A Good Thing — At The Right Time

Overall, it would be better if kids ate healthy all the time. Research shows eating makes a difference in children’s grades:

Everybody knows you should eat breakfast the day of a big test. High-carb, high-fiber, slow-digesting foods like oatmeal are best, research shows. But what you eat a week in advance matters, too. When 16 college students were tested on attention and thinking speed, then fed a five-day high-fat, low-carb diet heavy on meat, eggs, cheese and cream and tested again, their performance declined.

There are always exceptions. No kid eats healthy all the time. But the irony is that kids often get “bad” foods at the wrong time.
Research shows caffeine and sugar can be brain boosters:

Caffeine and glucose can have beneficial effects on cognitive performance… Since these areas have been related to the sustained attention and working memory processes, results would suggest that combined caffeine and glucose could increase the efficiency of the attentional system.

They’re also potent rewards kids love.

So if kids are going to occasionally eat candy and soda maybe it’s better to give it to them while they study then when they’re relaxing.

8) Happy Kids = Successful Kids

Happier kids are more likely to turn into successful, accomplished adults.

…happiness is a tremendous advantage in a world that emphasizes performance. On average, happy people are more successful than unhappy people at both work and love. They get better performance reviews, have more prestigious jobs, and earn higher salaries. They are more likely to get married, and once married, they are more satisfied with their marriage.

And what’s the first step in creating happier kids? Being a happy parent.

9) Peer Group Matters

Your genetics and the genetics of your partner have a huge effect on your kids. But the way you raise your kids?
Not nearly as much.

On things like measures of intellectual ability and certain aspects of personality, the biological children are fairly similar to their parents. For the adopted kids, however, the results are downright strange. Their scores have nothing whatsoever in common with their adoptive parents: these children are no more similar in their personality or intellectual skills to the people who raised them, fed them, clothed them, read to them, taught them, and loved them for sixteen years than they are to any two adults taken at random off the street.

So what does have an enormous affect on your children’s behavior? Their peer group.

We usually only talk about peer pressure when it’s a negative but more often than not, it’s a positive.

Living in a nice neighborhood, going to solid schools and making sure your children hang out with good kids can make a huge difference.

What’s the easiest way for a college student to improve their GPA? Pick a smart roommate.

One study of Dartmouth College students by economist Bruce Sacerdote illustrates how powerful this influence is. He found that when students with low grade-point averages simply began rooming with higher-scoring students, their grade-point averages increased. These students, according to the researchers, “appeared to infect each other with good and bad study habits—such that a roommate with a high grade-point average would drag upward the G.P.A. of his lower-scoring roommate.”

10) Believe In Them

Believing your kid is smarter than average makes a difference.

When teachers were told certain kids were sharper, those kids did better — even though the kids were selected at random.

…Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson (1968) did the same study in a classroom, telling elementary school teachers that they had certain students in their class who were “academic spurters.” In fact, these students were selected at random. Absolutely nothing else was done by the researchers to single out these children. Yet by the end of the school year, 30 percent of the the children arbitrarily named as spurters had gained an average of 22 IQ points, and almost all had gained at least 10 IQ points.

Sum Up

One final note: Intelligence isn’t everything. Without ethics and empathy really smart people can be scary.

Smart people don’t start many bar fights. But stupid people don’t build many hydrogen bombs.

Goddess of Liberty Crown

What does the Goddess of Liberty look like? You decide! Let your imagination be your guide. Just gather together your materials and have fun.

What You’ll Need:

How to Make a Goddess of Liberty Crown

Step 1: Cut out a 10-inch-high piece of construction paper that will be long enough to fit around your head, plus a few inches to staple it closed.

Step 2: Cut long, pointed triangle shapes in the long end of the paper to make a crown shape.

Step 3: Cut two different-colored pieces of construction paper the same length and with the same pointed triangle shapes at the top. One piece should be 8 inches high, and the other should be 6 inches high.

Step 4: Glue each piece onto the next largest piece, and staple all the ends together. Now you have a beautiful layered crown.

Step 5: Use markers to write «Goddess of Liberty» on your crown. Decorate it with pretty designs.

How to Make a Safe Cape

Step 1: Cut a triangle of fabric about 30 inches long and 30 inches wide at the bottom. Cut off the tip so that the new edge is 7 inches long. Cut points along the bottom edge to make a bat cape. Cut the elastic in half.

Step 2: Sew one end of an elastic piece to the top of one corner of the cape. Measure 6 inches down the side and sew the other end of the elastic to the cape. Repeat with the second piece of elastic.

Step 3: If you want, decorate the cape with fabric paint. Let the paint dry. Put your arms through the elastic to wear the cape.

It’s easy to turn an oversized box into a great costume for Halloween or playtime. The instructions that follow suggest making a horse, but you can create any animal or vehicle that you’d like. This is a fun project that adults and kids can do together.

What You’ll Need:

Large cardboard box

Wide cloth ribbon

How to Make a Box Costume

Step 1: With an adult’s help, cut the bottom and top off of a cardboard box. Use the top and bottom pieces to make a horse’s head and tail. Draw the shape of a horse’s head and tail on the cardboard pieces. Decorate the shapes with markers, and cut them out.

Step 2: Cover your work surface with newspaper. Paint the horse body with poster paints. After the paint has dried, tape the head and tail to the box body.

Step 3: Make suspenders to hold the horse costume around your body. With an adult’s help, staple a long piece of wide ribbon to one inside corner of the box. Staple the other end of the ribbon to the opposite inside corner. Staple a second piece of ribbon to the inside of the remaining corners so that the ribbon suspenders cross over one another.

Fit for a King or Queen

Here’s a craft project that’s fit for a king or queen! You can wield all the power in your castle when you wear a special crown you’ve made yourself. Whether you want a Halloween accessory or a playtime prop, your crown will give you just the right look.

You can complete your costume by making other accessories fit for a king or queen, such as royal jewels (the press-on kind are fun), or a scepter or tiara made from sparkly chenille stems.

What You’ll Need

Construction paper, tagboard, or craft foam

Decorations (chenille stems, fancy poms, and faux gems)

How to Make the Fit for a King or Queen Craft

Step 1: Cut a crown shape out of construction paper, tagboard, or craft foam. (Make sure it’s wide enough to fit around your head. If you don’t have a big enough piece, try gluing or taping 2 pieces together.)

Step 2: Decorate the crown with chenille stems, fancy poms, and faux gems. For extra sparkle, use metallic stems and poms. Use plenty of glue, and make sure you let it dry completely.

How to Make a Superhero Cape

Step 1: Cut a 3/4-yard rectangle of 45-inch-wide (or larger) black, non-ravel fabric.

Step 2: Fold over 1-1/2 inches along one edge to the inside and sew (or glue, using a thin line) close to the cut edge to form a casing.

Step 3: Thread a long piece of 1-inch-wide ribbon through the casing, leaving enough ribbon at both edges to tie a bow.

Step 4: Tack or glue the ribbon in place at the casing edges.

Step 5: Make patches by drawing a series of 3-inch circles on paper.

Step 7: Cut the symbols and 3-inch circles from different felt colors. Glue a power symbol on each circle.

How to Make the Mermaid Crown

Step 1: Measure the poster board around your head, leaving enough extra so that you can staple overlapping ends.

Step 2: Cut out a crown from the poster board so that the points of the crown look like coral (see photo).

Step 3: Staple the ends of the crown together. (You might want to check your head measurement once more.)

Step 4: Draw a starfish shape on the poster board. Cut it out.

Step 5: Glue the starfish to the center of the crown; then glue on sequins.

A coat-of-arms crown is just right for the special «king» or «queen» in your family. A coat of arms is a family badge or crest. The symbols on the badge show the interests or strengths of the family. You would have seen a coat of arms in a castle in medieval times, but people often use a coat of arms today to display their family heritage.

Your coat of arms can be added to your king’s or queen’s crown, but it also looks great when attached to a cape or to a piece of fabric that’s draped over a chair for your throne.

How to Make the Coat-of-Arms Crown

Step 1: Cut out a crown from poster board.

Step 2: Add «jewels» (stick-on earrings, pieces of metallic papers, glitter, sequins, beads, or craft jewels).

Step 3: Personalize the crown by adding your name in glitter.

Step 4: Draw a coat of arms pattern on the paper.

Step 5: Pin the pattern to the felt. Cut around the pattern.

Step 6: Discard the paper pattern and then decorate the felt with strung sequins, glitter, ribbons, or braid.

Step 7: Glue the coat of arms to your crown, pin it to a cape, or hang it over a chair.

Creature from Outer Space

Use your imagination to create a headband that makes you a creature from outer space. What kind of space alien would you like to be? Funny? Monsterlike? It’s all up to you.

This is a fun adult-and-kid craft. Grown-ups can do the cutting and assembling of the craft; kids will enjoy decorating and deciding how wild or scary or humorous to make the pattern.

What You’ll Need:

How to Make the Creature from Outer Space Headband:

Step 1: Make a pattern, starting with a 1-1/2 × 14-inch rectangular band.

Step 2: Add two squiggly lined projectiles, approximately 7 inches tall, along one long edge, positioning each slightly off-center. If desired, draw two smaller projectiles in part of the remaining space.

Step 3: Draw another, same-sized band and add two projectiles, slightly off-center to the projectiles on the first band; cut both patterns out.

Step 4: Trace patterns onto two different colors of poster board; cut them out (see photo).

Step 5: Add goggle eyes where desired to complete your look.

Step 6: Punch holes near the ends of the band and tie closed to fit around your head with a piece of round-cord elastic.

Hawaiian Hula Skirt

You can learn to dance the hula, but it just doesn’t look right unless you’re wearing a Hawaiian hula skirt. Traditionally, the hula skirt was made from long grasses, but you can make one much easier out of raffia (and it’ll be less itchy too!).

Raffia is a soft, natural fiber that’s used in many craft projects. You’ll find it in craft stores in a variety of colors, so you can decide whether you want to make a hula skirt that looks like real grass or something more colorful. Once you make this simple skirt, all that’s left is to start dancing.

What You’ll Need

How to Make a Hawaiian Hula Skirt

Step 1: Measure the rope around your waist and add a few extra inches. Cut the rope this size.

Step 2: Take a piece of green raffia, and hang it from the rope so the ends are even. Tie a knot to hold the raffia in place.

Step 3: Keep adding and tying pieces of raffia onto the rope until it looks like a grass skirt.

Step 4: When the rope is covered (except for the extra inches), tie it around your waist.

Now it’s time for hula dancing!

The hula is a dance with hand movements that tell a story. You may not have classes in your area to learn how to dance the hula, but you can make up your own stories. Act them out with your hands, and move your body in a rhythmic pattern. Teach a few of your friends your new-style hula, and put on a show for the neighborhood or your families!

This is a great adult-and-kid project. Some of the construction of the helmet is a little tricky for small hands, so adults can handle the hard part, and kids can have fun decorating.

2 oatmeal boxes

How to Make a Space Helmet

Step 1: Put a paper grocery bag over your head. Using a marker, have your adult helper trace a circle on the bag where your face is. Take the bag off your head, and cut out the circle. You may also want to cut the bag around your shoulders so it is more comfortable to wear.

Step 2: In the middle of each oatmeal box lid, trace the end of a paper towel tube. Cut around the traced shape to make a hole (have an adult help you, if necessary).

Step 3: Staple or tape the oatmeal boxes side by side to the back of your helmet, lid side up.

Step 4: Stick an end of each paper towel tube through the top of each oatmeal box. Tape the top of each tube to the helmet so the tubes look like oxygen tank hoses.

How to Make a Native Clothing Costume

Make a grass skirt from Polynesia from a few brown paper grocery bags. Cut the bags to fringe the edges, wrap the bags around your waist (you may need to tape two or more bags together), and tape them in place.

Women in India and Sri Lanka wear beautiful saris. Take a long piece of colorful, flowing material and wrap one end around your waist. Place the other end over your shoulder.
