Welcome to the first part in my series of skin making tutorials. For this first one I’m starting off with the very basics of skin making. If you’re an experienced skin creator, you might as well skip this tutorial.

What is a Minecraft skin?

A Minecraft skin is a texture for the player in the game. Minecraft by default has (male, 4px arms) Steve and (female 3px arms) Alex, but the PC version of the game also allows you to upload your own. Most people download their skin from the internet, or ask someone else to make a skin for them. But you can also make your own!

Minecraft textures are basically tiny images which are enlarged and laid over a model in the game. Textures in resource packs work similar to skins. The game takes the parts of a skin from the skin template and overlays it on the right area of the character in the game. This is why a skin template may seem weird-looking when you first see it.

You don’t need to know this, but it’s nice to know anyway..
When looking at a skin in 2D, the template looks like this:

In this template image, «L1» stands for layer 1 and «L2» logically for layer 2. The 1.8+ template for Minecraft skins allows you to create not only a base skin, but also a layer on top of that to create 3D effects, that’s what layer 2 is for. Before the 1.8 update, only the head had a layer 2, and limbs were mirrored.

The old 32 x 64 pixels format is called the legacy format. It always uses the Steve model, and it mirrors the arms and legs. Minecraft Java still supports this format, so if you want to make or use an old skin, you still can. 🙂

Skin making programs

To make a skin, you need an appropriate program. Not long ago, Planet Minecraft released their very own skin editor, named PMCskin3D, you can find it at this link, or in the top menu under Minecraft > PMCskin3D.

The program is very intuitive and most of the tools speak for themselves, but if there’s anything you cannot figure out, there’s a help page which will help you figure out the basics at this link.

PMCskin3D allows you to easily enable and disable layer 2 while you are making a skin. The program also allows you to edit in 3D view, 2D view (the template) or a hybrid view of both! It has a lot more great features which you will find out soon enough. Just play around with the program some to get used to it.

Before PMCskin3D, Paril made its predecessor MCskin3D, which is a computer program for making skins which you could download. For years on end, it was the very best editor available.

In the past, we had SkinEdit (say, 5+ years ago), but it was never updated to suit the 1.8+ template. There are various other online editors available, including the ones on the Skindex, Miners Need Cool Shoes and Nova Skin. I would however not recommend using these, because they’re very limited compared to PMCskin3D.

As mentioned before, you can theoretically use any image editing program to edit a skin directly on the template. Personally I use Paint.net (free program) to make any quick adjustments to my skins.

Making your skin

Once you’ve chosen your skin editing program, you can start creating your skin. Simply use the tools available; pencil tool, color picker and eraser. You can make a skin that looks like yourself, your family, your friends, your pets or your favorite characters. Everything’s possible!

Saving and using your skin

PMCskin3D allows you to upload your skin directly to Planet Minecraft!
Just click this button and finish your submission:

From Planet Minecraft you can directly upload your skin to your Minecraft Java account, by clicking the Change my Minecraft skin button under any skin submission.

If you do not want to upload your skin to Planet Minecraft, you can save the skin file to your computer. In PMCskin3D you can do that by going to file > save to file in the program’s menu.

For the Java version of Minecraft, you go to this page on minecraft.net to upload your skin from your computer to your profile. Once you’ve done that, you will have the skin in your game the next time your play!

In the Windows 10 version of Minecraft, you can click the clothes hanger button in the launcher, and then the Choose New Skin button to upload the saved skin from your computer to your game.

As far as I’m aware, you cannot upload your self-made skin in any other version of Minecraft, including cracked versions of Java and Win10.

How to create your own skin in Minecraft

Are you a fan of an old-school pixel game? Good if you are, but you can’t deny that all those characters do look the same. And it’s so boring! But don’t worry, you’re already reading this article. Here we will teach you how to make your own Minecraft character.

But don’t forget about your homework. Usually, students spend a lot of time playing online games. However, you can use the Internet not only for entertainment but also for school purposes. Sometimes completing an assignment becomes a real challenge. Some students find solutions in online libraries or extra educational materials; others choose custom writing services like Paperial or any other professional service of the same kind. This helps them to save time and still perform great at school.

But let’s get back to how to make a Minecraft skin.

So, first of all, be sure to have a licensed game, as it is the only way to change your game hero. Then find the Minecraft skins editor.

There is a wide range of online editors on the Internet, so choose which one you like the most. Here are some of the easiest options you can try out in the first place.

Go to your profile page and download the base from the preferences. Open Paint on your PC and edit your character. Then, download the edited version back on the same page. And that’s it! You have your own upgraded hero! Most players use Scincraft editor to create Minecraft skin. It is easy to use, has a lot of features and clear instructions.

Let’s have a closer look at how to use the editor.

Go to the menu bar. If you want to create an absolutely new style, press ‘new skin.’ First, choose the color, then press ‘go.’ Now you can see two options for making layers: pre-made and custom. ‘Pre-made’ means that you can choose previously-made pieces and pixels by other users. Choosing ‘custom’ presupposes that you will create your own layers pixel by pixel. Each body and face part can be changed separately. Each variant that you choose can have different colors.

Once you are ready with editing, let’s import our picture. Here, you can see three formats available for downloading: PNG, TXT and Share. To successfully download your character to your profile, save it as PNG file. Be aware that if you open the picture on your PC, instead of the Minecraft account, it might look pretty strange. But that’s okay, it’s just how it should be.

Different people from all over the world draw and download impressive skins every day, and you are welcome to use them too. Just download it to your profile and save. I’m sure all your friends will be really jealous!

How to change your character’s skin in Minecraft to give them a different appearance

In many ways, Minecraft is all about customization. So you might be surprised when you launch the game and find that the cosmetics available to your protagonist are fairly limited.

But for the creatives who love the design and crafting aspects of Minecraft, don’t worry: In reality, your character’s cosmetic choices are virtually limitless. For Java edition users, you can find or create a skin, upload it, and enjoy. And Bedrock users have that option and more through its character creator tool.

Here’s how you can get your Minecraft’ character’s skin in both Bedrock Edition and Java Edition.

How to make a Minecraft skin

Before you can change your skin, you’ll first need to have a new skin to change to. The developers of Minecraft offer a few custom skins for free, usually created in honor of special events. You can also check out websites like The Skindex, which host user-created skins that you can download and use yourself.

If you’re willing to put in the work though, you can make a skin yourself. Either edit the existing template using a program like Photoshop, or use a browser-based tool like the Minecraft Skin Editor.

How to change your skin on Minecraft Java

1. Open the Minecraft Launcher and select Skins from the top menu.

2. Click New skin to add a new skin.

3. On the «Add new skin» page, select Browse. Find and select your image, making sure it’s the specified dimensions and PNG format, and click Open.

4. Name your skin if you’d like, choose the «Classic» size or «Slim» size, then click Save & Use in the bottom-right corner. When you launch the game, your character will be wearing the new skin.

How to change your skin on Minecraft Bedrock

Similar to Java Edition, you can upload a skin you got from the internet, or one you’ve created yourself for your Bedrock character model. With tons of creative Minecraft users eager to share their skins, you can find almost any cosmetic you can dream up.

Just note that this is only available when playing on your PC. You can’t import skins on a game console.

1. Launch Bedrock Edition and click Dressing Room, below your character model on the right.

2. Scroll through the available characters and click Edit Character under one of your existing models, or select one of the blank slots and then click Create Character. If you’re making a new character, it doesn’t matter whether you pick Character or Classic Skin in the pop-up that appears.

3. You’ve now got a few different ways to change your character’s skin. Using the icons in the left sidebar, you can find two menus:

When you’re done, click the Dressing Room icon in the top-left corner again. It’ll save all your changes and let you start playing with your new character.

How to change your skin on Minecraft PE

1. On your mobile device, go to a third-party Minecraft skin website and download the skin that you want to use.

2. Open the Minecraft app and tap on the Dressing Room button.

3. Tap on the three horizontal bars in the top left of your screen and select Classic Skins.

4. Tap on Owned and, in the dropdown menu that appears, tap on the gray skin.

5. Select Choose new skin and select the photo that you wish to use.

Quick tip: If you tap Get more you can purchase readily available skins from the Marketplace.

How to change your skin on a game console

The directions for changing your skin in Minecraft on a game console are the same as Minecraft PE.

In place of the three horizontal bars, press whatever the illustrated shortcut button is or navigate your stick to the left until you expand the menu; on a PlayStation 4, the shortcut is Options.

How to make HD Minecraft skins

Hello people! Welcome to my tutorial on how to make HD skins!

What I like to do is first go to a game called Skincraft- http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/571250

This is how you make your skin «HD.» Go to MinersNeedCoolShoes- http://www.minershoes.com/

At the top of the screen near a poorly made green and blue head is a button labeled «Upload.» Click that and make an account if you dont aleready have one. So make an account, Log in, click upload choose and the file from your desktop of your previously made skin. Name the skin etc. etc. Then click share. Your unshaded skin will now be uploaded to the site. Dont worry, there are thousands of skins on this website so it will be rare yours will ever be found. In the corner click edit skin. ( The button has a pixelated pencil on it ) NOW the shading will begin. When the page loads you will get a nice little layout of you skin and a full blown picture. Near the little pink head with a heart on it is a brush with a trail of orange paint. Click this. In the bottom right corner there is also a pen button thingy. Click that and with your cursor select the color you want to shade first. If you still have the brush selected, drag the cursor over to the color you just selected. Then click and drag. AND BAM. ITS SHADED!! You will have to use the color select tool for every new color you want to shade. Once you have shaded your now HD skin to your hearts content click download in the corner. The page pulled up will say navigation cancelled. Dont worry nothing is wrong. Youll notice the download has started. Your file should be labeled as sketch.png. This file now has your HD skin and can be uploaded to Minecraft!!

15 Tips on how to make a good skin.

Tip #1 : Do NOT use MS Paint. Photofiltre and Photoshop are better for pro Skin makers. I would say if you have Photofiltre, or Photoshop and you are starting out, try using them for editing. For beginners, use MC Skinedit. It’s much easier, and has a nice interface.

Tip #2 : Do NOT use a lot of colors, or neon colors. It hurts the eyes and looks bad. I would say, just don’t do it.

Tip #4 : If you are making a skin of a video game, or movie person; Use Google or something to bring up the image, don’t draw from memory.

Tip #5 : If you cannot Hand draw or so called «Mouse draw» Use other people’s skins and edit them. (Remeber Credit!) Simple as it needs to be.

Tip #6 : Take your time. A skin you are going to upload or use should look nice so you will want to keep that skin or have others download it.

Tip #7 : Use the burn tool (If you’re looking for Minecraft looks) in MC Skinedit (Or Dodge and Sponge tools Photoshop)

Tip #8 : Use hats to your advantage, such as using it as a normal hat, ears, or even noses.

Tip #9 : Use fitting colors. Using fitting colors makes your skin look nice. (Ex. Dark night with dark colors)

Tip #10 : Use the skin you made to see if it fits in Minecraft. Because the skin doesn’t appear exactly what it does with the lighting of Minecraft.

Tip #11 : When looking in game, dose the armor cover the eyes? If it does, then fix it.

Tip #12 : Remember, Hats go under armor. So make sure the armor makes sense with the hair and ears.

Tip #13 : Be creative with your skins. If you want a dragon with eyes on its side, do so. It looks neat and different.

Tip #14 : If none of this works for you, you can request skins, but you don’t get a whole lot of control with what you get.
