How to Create a Template in FL Studio 12

Setting up a template in FL Studio 12 is absolutely crucial for a fast workflow.

Think about every time you open up FL Studio, the amount of extra clicks involved to get a simple task done.

I’m especially talking about come mix time.

Imagine you have 20 sounds which are all routed to their own mixer tracks.

If you want to EQ each of these tracks individually, you will have to open up 20 individual EQs – one for each sound on each mixer insert.

That’s why having a premade template inside FL Studio helps us tremendously by saving one of our most valuable assets – time.

What You Will Learn

Why Setting Up a Template in FL Studio is Important

As mentioned, when you open up plugin after plugin, it takes about 3-4 clicks per plugin.

If you have 20 tracks on separate mixer inserts, and would like an EQ plugin on each, well that’s 3 x 20 = 60 clicks.

Not to mention, the time it takes to load the plugin, and actually open it.

Before giving tons of praise to a template though, there is a downside which I’d like you to be aware of.

If you totally set everything up in a template, yes it saves time, but if you have 20+ plugins which are automatically added to every project you make, it just start to take that much longer to open projects.

That’s the only downside, it can take longer to open a project.

But with computers getting really powerful nowadays, it’s not really a concern, I just like to bring things to your attention on what to be aware of.

So yes, create a template, set it up how you like, and you’ll see your workflow efficiency increase significantly!

This doesn’t just have to be EQ’s and compressors on a mixer track, you can also open up certain instrument VSTs that you use over and over, too!

How to Create a Template in FL Studio

Creating a template in FL Studio is actually super easy!

The hard part of it is knowing and understanding your workflow so that you set up this template for ultimate efficiency!

This opens FL Studio on a totally clean slate. It’s up to you to set it up how you want!

Here’s some suggestions to get you thinking.

I usually tend to EQ/Compress every track at least a touch, so I set up an EQ + Compressor on about the first 20 tracks.

Next, in my later years of mixing, I’ve started to use sends a lot more.

So I set up a Reverb send, Delay Send, Stereo Separation Send, a Distortion Send, as well as a Parallel Compression send.

I can easily route any instrument to one of these sends if I want the certain effect!

For a pro tip, you can create an extra reverb send, but set up the reverb differently. This will give you more variety in your reverb choices!

Here’s a picture of my current template (May 2017):

Surprisingly, I don’t have any EQ’s/compressors set up on individual mixer inserts.

What I made sure of in this current template was to create up these sends. All the reverbs, delay, distortion etc.

This is so I can easily route to these if I’m wanting that effect.

I guess over the years I found that by having an EQ/compressor on every track, it just takes longer to open up projects.

I tend to just open them up as I go now.

So once you’ve set up your template how you’d like, just simply go Save As.

In the windows save pop-up window, you’ll want to save it into the FL Studio template folder. You’ll find that at:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Image-Line\FL Studio 12\Data\Projects\Templates\Minimal

Inside the Minimal folder, just create a folder with your producer name and save your file with your producer name too.

It will open up a fresh template, and you’ll be on your way!

Thinking Ahead, Saving Time in the Future

This will be something you will adjust over your years of producing.

As you learn new techniques, or discover new ways about yourself of how you actually approach making music, you can reopen this template, tweak it, and save it for future productions.

This is just a tool to set up to save you time so you can focus on creating music fast, and get those idea out of your head.

Increase Your Beatmaking Workflow (FL Studio 10 Templates)

Creating a Template in FL Studio,

Creating a template within FL Studio is actually quite easy. It takes you about 5-10 minutes, but saves you major time in the long run.

Also, once you get your first template set up, you’ll start to realize you make beats a certain way. So when that time comes, just simply go back and change up your template again, modifying it to suite your needs for quicker beat making ;).

Save Yourself 100 Clicks EACH Mix,

For me, I have EQ’s and compressors on about 30-40 of my mixer tracks. Yes, it takes a bit longer for FL Studio to open up.. but I feel it’s worth having my FL Studio set up for me, each time I open a fresh instance.

Making a FL Studio Template is Very Simple.

I like to start from Empty allowing me to start from scratch. This means no plugins are open; everything is bare.

Now from here, it’s all up to you 😉 — You have to think, “What do you think would help you out as you make your beat?”. Again, as you go along, you’ll start to figure out your workflow, and how to set up your FL Studio to suite your needs.

After you’ve set up all your mixer tracks with EQ’s/compressors, opened up the VSTs you want open, and set up your master channel with the effects for mastering (and an audio meter), it’s now time to save it!

If you do sound design, you can also set up a different template, and save it Sound Design. This allows you to switch in between the templates for each skill, making sound design easy with its plugins, and beatmaking quick with its plugins.

Free AMAZING T-RackS Meter,

A meter on your master channel is very important. It allows you to see, and understand, what’s going on inside your track! You can either use FL Studio’s Wave Candy, or, I’d highly recommend IK Multimedia’s T-RackS Metering (Free!).

Remember, you can change your template WHENEVER you want, just always keep in mind, “If I were to do it this way, would it save me time while making the next beat!”.

Annoying Aftermath,

That beat is exactly how you made it, and everything is set up how it was before. No EQ’s on mixer tracks etc. You have to open up all those EQ’s by hand once again!

But at least you have something to look forward to in all your new beats! Once your FL Studio template is set up, everything will be a very smooth beatmaking and mixing process!

В данном цикле статей я хочу осветить процесс создания музыки в программе FL Studio.

Введение

Музыкальный трек в FL Studio, составляется из фрагментов именуемых pattern (паттернами). Каждый такой паттерн состоит из последовательностей нот, заданных одному или нескольким каналам (channels). Размер паттерна кратен четвертям, минимальный размер паттерна – одна четверть. Такты в FL Studio имеют по умолчанию размер 4/4(в настройках проекта размер можно изменить) и в редакторе паттернов такты разделены более светлыми линиями сетки и подписаны сверху цифрами по порядку. Паттерн состоит из нот, тон которых лежит в пределах 10 октав, минимальная длительность ноты – одна сто двадцать восьмая.

Интерфейс FL Studio

Общее правило, чтобы изменить положение какого-либо регулятора, надо нажать на него левой кнопкой мыши и не отпуская кнопку передвинуть мышь вниз чтобы убавить или вверх, чтобы прибавить. Также можно изменять положение роликом мыши, когда курсор находиться над регулятором.

Интерфейс выглядит так (прокомментировано только самое важное на первом этапе освоения).

Step Sequencer

Step Sequencer содержит в себе список каналов и используется для редактирования паттернов. Номер редактируемого паттерна отображается сверху (см. первый скриншот), а также он выделен оранжевым цветом в плейлисте.

Каждая строка – это один канал, этот канал может быть либо синтезатором (канал который генерирует звук на основе заданных нот), либо семплером (канал который использует уже готовые звуки (семплы)).

На скриншоте видно, чтобы заставить звучать ту или иную ноту, нужно нажать на соответствующий ей прямоугольник, для того чтобы определить тон ноты, следует открыть окно с клавишами и выбрать нужную, также можно изменить параметры ноты.

Также можно клонировать или удалить выбранные каналы. Выбор осуществляться правым кликом мышки на сером прямоугольнике справа от названия канала. Левый клик выбирает/снимает выделение со всех каналов сразу.

Чтобы переместить канал выше/ниже следует удерживая клавишу ALT стрелку ВВЕРХ/ВНИЗ. Также можно двигать несколько выделенных каналов одновременно.

Выбранные каналы можно объединить в группу, для этого есть пункт меню Channels – Group selected.

Playlist

Плейлист используется для редактирования трека в целом. Он состоит из двух частей, в первой находится список паттернов данного проекта, во второй клипы автоматизации (Automation Clips) и аудио клипы (Audio Clips), также сюда можно и паттерны вставлять.

Чтобы нарисовать паттерн надо щёлкнуть левой кнопкой мыши на нужном месте (в режиме карандаш или кисть, естественно), чтобы удалить паттерн нужно щёлкнуть правой на нём.

Для выделения не обязательно переключать инструмент, достаточно удерживать клавишу CTRL, также чтобы что-то обрезать можно удерживать клавишу SHIFT.

Чтобы выделить всю строку данного паттерна достаточно кликнуть на маленький прямоугольник справа от его названия.

Паттерны как и канал можно перемещать, клонировать и удалять. По одному или сразу несколько (команды для этого находятся в контекстном меню паттерна или меню плейлиста в пункте, Patterns).

Для объединения нескольких паттернов в один надо их выделить и в контекстном меню выбрать Merge selected.

Для объединения нескольких «прямоугольников» одного паттерна в один надо в контекстном меню выбрать Flatten selected.

Чтобы выделить всю строку данного паттерна достаточно кликнуть на маленький прямоугольник справа от его названия.

Piano Roll

Непосредственно редактор мелодии. Окно состоит из панели инструментов, аналогичной той, что в плейлисте, нотного стана слева, окна ввода нот по центру и окна параметров снизу.

Логика проста, один прямоугольник – одна нота, длинна прямоугольника – длительность ноты.
Большинство операций производиться также как и в плейлисте, только чтобы скопировать и перенести выделение надо удерживать SHIFT.

Чтобы увеличить длительность достаточно потянуть за правый край ноты, но если включен CAPSLOCK на клавиатуре, то менять размер можно и за правый край.

Кроме того в режиме CAPSLOCK, при изменении размера выделенной области он будет меняться целиком, при выключенном же будут меняться только размеры нот по отдельности.

Привязка к сетке действует также как и в плейлисте.

Mixer

Чтобы привязать какой-нибудь канал к треку микшера следует в окошке FX окна Channel Settings выбрать цифру нужного трека, либо в микшере нажав правой кнопкой на нужном треке, выполнить Link Selected Channels — To this track (Либо CTRL+L на клавиатуре). В последнем случае к данному треку привяжутся все выбранные каналы. Если выполнить Link Selected Channels — Starting from this track (SHIFT+CTRL+L), то выбранные каналы привяжутся по-порядку к каждому треку начиная с выбранного.

Browser

Channel Settings

Настройки канала. Для начала достаточно знать, в верхней части расположены регуляторы громкости, баланса и питч, рядом с которым регулируется величина отрезка регулирования питча в октавах. Правее окошко FX номер в котором соответствует треку микшера к которому привязан данный канал.

Ниже расположено несколько вкладок. Про назначение их постараюсь объяснить в части второй.

С места в карьер

Итак. Вдоволь начитавшись и насмотревшись картинок хочется уже что-нибудь сочинить.
Создадим новый проект использовав готовый трансовый шаблон. Для этого выполняем File – New from template – Genere — Trance.

В первом паттерне сделаем ударную партию:

Устанавливаем режим воспроизведения в pat (жёлтый квадратик сверху) и жмём на Play или на пробел. Слушаем. Останавливаем воспроизведение, ещё раз нажав пробел или Stop сверху.

Во втором паттерне сделаем бас партию. Открываем Piano Roll для канала Trance Bass (правый клик на названии канала Trance Bass – Piano roll). Рисуем там примерно вот так:

В третьем паттерне тоже будет бас партия. Открываем Piano Roll для канала Trance Bass и рисуем:

Во третьем и четвёртом паттерне создадим небольшую мелодию:

Теперь откроем Playlist и расставим паттерны как-то так.

Устанавливаем режим воспроизведения в song (вся песня). Слушаем. Радуемся.

What are FL Studio presets or templates?

Templates or presets will give you premade tools and settings, included in the FL Studio application. They allow you to instantly start with a partly designed project. This can give you a quick kickstart.

Thereby, presets are usually related to already defined settings on instruments, effects or mixer tracks. On the other hand, templates generally serve a larger purpose. A template gives you a certain arrangement of instruments and/or effects, including presets, to start at a certain point.

How to access FL Studio templates?

To access FL Studio templates, click “File” in the menu, select “New from template” and click one of the templates you wish to use.

As you may notice, there’s a wide variety of different templates. This way, there are templates that contain perfectly organized instruments and mixer effects that are “pre set” to work together. But there are also very minimalistic templates, only providing a few mixer effects, or even the option of starting with an entirely empty project.

If you wish to use a different one, you can always select a new template to start with a different arrangement of plugins and settings.

Be original and make your own sounds

Templates are great to have a particular starting point for your FL Studio project. They’re perfect to quickly express your ideas in FL Studio, but also to learn from. However, because anyone can access them, most templates are not that original for using in a serious song.

FL Studio presets in demo songs

Instead of learning from templates, you can also use FL Studio’s powerful demo songs. Demo songs are songs made by artists and included in FL Studio for us to see and modify. This way, we can “steal” all their tricks and strategies and incorporate these ideas in our own songs.

How to access FL Studio demo songs?

To access FL Studio demo songs, click “View” in the menu and then click “Browser”. In the browser, click “Demo projects” and then click “Demo songs”. There, you will find a list of different artists and titles.

To open a demo song, right-click on a title and click “Open”. After it’s loaded, you can browse through all the instruments, effects, settings and arrangements. This is immensely powerful to learn how to make sounds, how to make buildups, how to mix, just how to do anything.

Keep in mind, each demo song has its own arrangement. You can learn different things from each track.
