How to Port Forward on Your Router
Port forwarding can help you set up a Minecraft server, access your files and desktop remotely, improve your internet connection speeds, and more. While it might seem complicated, once you understand what port forwarding is and how it works, it can be quite simple. Here’s how to forward ports on your router using a Mac or Windows 10 PC.
What is Port Forwarding?
Port forwarding is a way of making your router use a specific port to communicate with certain devices. By setting a specific port for your devices, you are telling your router to always accept requests for those ports and forward data to a device’s private IP address.
In order to understand port forwarding, it helps to understand a little about how routers work first. Your router’s job is to transmit an internet signal to all your devices over a local area network (LAN). To do this, your router assigns each device in your LAN its own local IP address. For example, your computer will have a private IP address like 192.168.0.2 or 10.0.2.
Then, on top of that, the applications and services on each device are also assigned a port number. For example, an application on your computer will have an IP address with a port number attached like 192.168.0.2:80 or 10.0.0.2:80.
With this unique IP address and port number, your router knows which program or service to send information to. This lets you and others access devices and programs on your LAN over a wide area network (WAN).
How to Port Forward
To forward ports on your router, log into your router and go to the port forwarding section. Next, enter the port numbers and your device’s IP address. Choose a forwarding protocol and save your changes.
Note: If you don’t see a port forwarding option in your router’s settings, you might have to upgrade. Check out our list of the best routers for 2020 here to find one that works for you.
Note: You might get a privacy warning that tells you it’s unsafe to visit your router’s IP address. Just click Advanced > Proceed to continue.
Note: The most common ports to open are 80 for handling requests for opening websites, and 21 for sharing files over a network. If you are setting up a Minecraft server, you should use port 25565.
Note: If you have not set a static IP address for your device, your IP address might change when you turn your device off, reset your router, or your ISP changes your IP address for you. You can only set a static IP address on a device by going through the settings of that device. What is Port Forwarding?
Before you start forwarding ports, you need to know how it all works. We’ve broken it down in a brief guide that gives you the basics. You can read it here.
Find Your Router
Now that you understand what we’re about to do, let’s locate your network router. Your router will be a device that is plugged into your broadband Internet connection. For instance, if you get your Internet connection from your cable company, you will find your router plugged in directly to your cable modem. Popular brands of network routers include Netgear, Linksys, D-Link and Belkin. If you find a box with one of these names on it, you’re probably on the right trail. If your computer is connected wirelessly, there might be a lit antenna icon. If your computer is not wireless, you will see a thick cable with clear plastic ends connecting this box to your computer. When you find this box, note the manufacturer and model number. Most routers have model numbers that have fewer than eight characters, and most often start with a letter. If you can’t find the manufacturer and model number, check the stickers on the bottom of the router. Write this information down, you’ll need it later!
Which Ports Do You Need To Forward?

A rule of thumb when port forwarding is: «When in doubt, forward it». There are plenty of times when it’s not obvious whether you NEED to forward a particular port, but in almost all instances, there’s no harm in forwarding more than you need. and if something does go awry, it’s easily resolved. This is especially true when it comes to selecting TCP or UDP. If you don’t know which to choose, just forward both!

Port Forwarding – How to set it up
Port Forwarding is used to allow external devices (PlayStation network for example) to connect to your internal devices (PS4). With port forwarding, we can tell the router where to forward the packets that are meant for your PS4 for example.
By default, our firewall will block all incoming traffic, which is good. Otherwise, a hacker could gain easily access to your network. By opening and forwarding specific ports in your firewall you can safely run a web server or FTP server on your computer or host or join an online game.
What is Port Forwarding
With port forwarding, you can make a computer or other network device (the security camera for example) accessible from the internet. You only allow specific traffic (that comes through a port number) to travel into your network to the network device (or computer). This is commonly used for security camera’s, gaming, hosting a (web)server or making you NAS accessible from the internet.
Let say we have the network below. The router/modem has a built-in firewall. Let’s say we want to host a game on our PlayStation for example. Our friends need to be able to connect to our PlayStation for that.
By default, the firewall in the router will block all unknown incoming traffic. If our friends try to join our game, a package is sent through port 3074. But our firewall has no idea who needs that, so it will drop the package.
By setup a port forwarding rule in our router, we can tell the router to forward all data package that is sent through port 3074 to forward it to our game console. The PlayStation will handle the data further.
Making multiple devices accessible
Every network device in your network has it’s own IP Address. But to connect to the internet all devices share one public IP Address (in the examples above it’s 85.84.83.82) that is supplied by your ISP. Now every application uses there own port number, for example, webservers are accessible over port 80 and an Unifi Security Camera can be accessed over port 7080.
With Port Forwarding we can forward every port to the correct network device. So we can send the traffic for our website that comes in over port 80 to our server that is listing on port 80 and the traffic for the PlayStation to the console itself.
Now let’s say you have two Unifi security camera’s that you want to access directly from over the internet. Both camera only responds to a request over port 7080. So internally you can access camera 1 on Ip Address 192.168.0.100:7080 and camera 2 on 192.168.0.120:7080.
To access the camera from the internet you would need to connect to your public Ip Address, for example, 85.84.83.82 followed by the port number: http://85.84.83.82:7080. But if you forward this port to both camera’s it wouldn’t work.
With most routers, you can change the destination port, so this allows you to make camera 1 accessible on http://85.84.83.82:7081 and camera 2 on http://85.84.83.82:7082. In the forwarding rule, you would forward the traffic to another port number, simply 7080.
How to setup Port Forwarding
Now setting up Port Forwarding might seem complicated, but it really isn’t. We are going to give the computer, network device or game console to which you want to forward the port to a static Ip Address, next we are going to login into the router and forward the port to the network device. Sounds simple right?
Setting up a static Ip Address
By default, most network devices get an Ip Address from the DHCP server. This server is built-in your router and assigns the internal network devices an Ip Address. But when you turn the device off and on again it might get another Ip Address. This way you port forwarding will only work until you turn it off.
To setup a static Ip Address you will need to go to the network settings page of your device. Change the Ip Address settings (or IPv4) from automatic DHCP mode to manual. Next, you will need to specify an Ip Address. You can look up the DHCP scope in your router to see which range is used by the router. Or you can try to find an Ip Address that is not used, most of the time setting IP which ends with a number between the 200 and 250 is pretty safe.
Log into your router
Next, we need to login to the router. To find your router you can lookup the gateway address on your computer.
Now you need to login to your router. If you didn’t change the password and don’t know it, you can try some of the following common combinations. If none works, then look it up in the manual or on Google:
Setting up the Port Forwarding
Ones logged in to your router you will need to find the port forwarding section. Now it depends on your router brand where you can find this, but the most common places are:
When you found the correct page on your router you will add a new forwarding rule. Below is a screenshot of the Edge Router X (my personal favourite). Most routers will have a similar layout, you enter the Original port, this is the port number as listed by the application, then you required protocol, when in doubt, just set it to both.
The forward-to address or Ip Address is the network device you want to give access, in this case, the Ip Address of the PlayStation and the internal port number (which you can leave the same as the original in general)
If you need to open multiple ports you can, depending on your router, open a range, by entering 3074-3080 or multiple by separating them with a comma (3074,3075 etc). If your router doesn’t support it, then you will have to create multiple forwarding rules.
Port Forwarding Test
When you created the port forwarding rules you will need to test it to see if the settings are correct. One way is to just simply open the application and check if you can gain access. If that isn’t possible you can use one of the many online port forwarding checkers.
A good one is for example Canyouseeme.org. With this tool, you can test if your port forwarding rules are set up successfully.
Port Forwarding for PS4
To setup port forwarding for PS4, we first need to give it a static Ip Address. Because otherwise, it will get a new Ip address every time you turn the PS4 off and on, braking the forwarding rules.
To give the PS4 a static address you will need to do the following:
The PS4 should be able to connect to the internet. So we can now set up the port forwarding rules in our router. Login to your router and go to your Port Forwarding page.

Now depending on your router, you need to create the following rules forwarding rules:
If your router doesn’t support a range (3478-3480), then you will need to create multiple rules for each port number. On some routers, you don’t need to or can’t enter the Forward-to port. That isn’t necessary, by default the port forwarding rule will use the same port number.
Conclusion
As you can see setting up port forwarding rules isn’t really difficult. Al you need to do is give your internal device a static Ip Address and forward the correct port numbers to the new Ip Address.
If you have devices that require the same port number you can use different ones on the external side and map the correct port number internally.

Understanding Port Forwarding
What is port forwarding? Port forwarding is a way of allowing people from the internet to connect to you. A port forward puts a device outside of your router, as if it was directly connected to the internet. This is needed for security cameras, torrenting, and optimal gaming experience.
Port forwarding directs your router to send any incoming data from the internet to a specified device on your network. A port forward maps data that is bound to a designated port number to the device or app that you want it to go to. After forwarding a port in your router, incoming data on that port is sent to the destination device that you have chosen.
What is a port?
In the context of port forwarding, a port has nothing to do with the physical ports on the back of your router. Any device on your network can receive a port forward no matter which physical port it is plugged into, or even over WiFi.
A port in port forwarding is simply a number, much like a phone number.
You might be asking if it is safe to forward ports on your router. The answer is yes as long as you follow a few simple rules. Never forward ports to a PC that does not have a firewall running. Port forwarding is a way to make a device on your network accessible from the internet.
Router Port Forwarding with Network Utilities
Step 1: Run the Router Detector tool to locate your router on your network and ensure that you only have one router.
Step 2: Next, create a permanent IP address for the device that you want to forward ports to. You can either use DHCP reservations in your router or set a static IP address in the device. The Static IP Setter ensures that your PC has a static IP address. This is helpful in diagnosing open port issues because some routers refuse to forward a port to a dynamic IP address.
Step 3: The next step is to use PFConfig to forward ports in your router. PFConfig logs into your router and configures it automatically.
Step 4: After you have set up port forwarding, it can be useful to check if your ports are forwarded correctly. In the case of forwarding ports to a gaming console or security camera, it is generally easiest to see if you can connect to them.

Static IP Guides
When you forward a port you are making a setting in your router that points at an IP address on your network. Normally IP addresses are dynamic, which means they change often. When an IP address that is the target of a port forward changes, that port forward breaks. It is important to set a permanent IP address before configuring a port forward. There are two ways to set a permanent IP address.
The best way to set a permanent IP address is to configure a DHCP reservation in your router. Not only is this the easiest to set up, it’s also the easiest to maintain in the long run.
Another way to configure a permanent IP address is to set a static IP in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This requires that you log in to the target device, find the network settings, and have a good idea of which IP addresses are available on your network. Not all routers support DHCP reservations, so this may be your only option. Only go this route if your router requires it.
Some routers refuse to set up a port forward to an IP address that does not have a DHCP reservation configured. While this might seem like a limitation at first, it is actually a very good policy.

Understanding Port Forwarding
Port forwarding is a method of making a computer on your network accessible to computers on the internet, even though you are behind a router. To understand port forwarding, you need to know what the ports in your router are used for.
Let’s talk about router ports, port forwarding, and the general steps for forwarding ports in your router. The reason port forwarding is necessary is also covered near the end of this article.
Understanding port forwarding.
What is Port Forwarding?
Port forwarding creates a path through your router so that packets can get to devices inside your network. Creating a port forward in your router opens up access to certain applications from the internet.
Port forwarding is commonly used for hosting game servers, VoIP, and peer-to-peer downloading. There are many other reasons you may need to forward a port.

What are Ports?
A port is just a number appended to a packet of data on a network. Devices and applications listen for packets that have a specific port number. There are 65,536 port numbers to choose from. A good analogy is to think of ports like extensions on a phone system.
In IPv4 every packet of data has both a destination IP address and a port number. It doesn’t matter if this packet of information is on your home network or on the internet, both pieces of information are always necessary.
IP packets are usually written with the IP address and port number separated by a colon.
192.168.0.100:443
The above is usually said: «To 192.168.0.100 on 443»
The IP address tells the packet where to go and the port number describes what the packet is containing.
What are some commonly used ports?
Every program on your computer that uses the internet is programmed to send its packets through specific ports. Sometimes the ports are selected arbitrarily by the programmers of the software, but other times programmers will use a more standard port depending on the functionality of the software.

General Steps for Forwarding a Port in Your Router

Why Is Port Forwarding Necessary?
When the internet was first created, it was intended for every device to have a unique IP address. The internet worked this way until broadband became popular. Once everyone had broadband to their house things needed to change.
The internet before broadband
The internet runs on IPv4. In IPv4 there are about 4 billion unique IP addresses. There are so many IP addresses that the early creators of the internet handed them out haphazardly, giving huge blocks to regions of the world that would never use them all.
Over time, some areas of the world began to run out, but by then everyone had already allocated their huge blocks of IP addresses in ways that were impossible to redistribute.
Then along came broadband and suddenly every household in developed countries needed at least one unique IP address. Internet service providers did not have enough IP addresses to hand out. To fix this, network hardware manufacturers began to implement a bandaid to the problem, called NAT.
NAT is a way for your router to seperate the internet from your home network.
NAT, or Network Address Translation, is a way of separating your home network from the internet. This has the advantage of protection from internet hackers and alleviating the ISP of their dwindling IP problem. However, it broke a fundamental concept of how the internet works.
The problem with NAT
In a NAT network all connections must originate from the inside. It is not possible to connect to a device inside a NAT network from the internet.
With NAT in every router, homes were protected, ISPs were happy, and the internet seemed to work. Except for that pesky incoming connection problem.
The internet with NAT
When you connect a home router to the internet your ISP gives your router your one and only IP address. This IP address is referred to as your external IP address, and it is used for every communication on the internet. It is your router’s job to translate between that IP address and the private IP addresses on your home network. Those private IP addresses are known as internal IP addresses.
The reason that a router cannot set up port forwarding automatically is that it doesn’t know what you want. When your router receives an incoming packet on its external IP address, it does not know which internal IP address to forward that packet to. Now, you could just tell your router to forward all incoming packets to a single device inside your network. This is called DMZ, and it is considered dangerous because it exposes that device to the internet and all the hackers out there.
A better solution is to selectively forward just some packets to some devices. This has the advantage of both protecting your network from malicious hackers and allowing the control to fine-tune where each packet goes. Port forwarding allows you to forward packets for different reasons to different devices.
When you forward a port to a camera you are forwarding one port to one camera.
As an example, let’s assume you have two security cameras, both of them running a web server on port 443. We’ll call them Camera A and Camera B.
When you connect them to your network your router gives them each a unique IP address. This means that when you are at home you can easily talk to both of them. You simply talk to them by their IP address on port 443 and it works.
Now let’s assume you are at work and you want to talk to Camera A. You know that you have to connect to your router’s external IP address on port 443. The problem is when you make that connection, your router doesn’t know whether you intend to connect to Camera A or Camera B.
A port forward tells the router where you intend an incoming packet to go.
In your router, you create a port forward directing all traffic on port 443 from the router’s external IP address to Camera A. Your router then forwards all incoming traffic on port 443 to Camera A on your network, and you are able to connect to it when you are away from home.
The downfall is that since you forwarded port 443 to Camera A there is no way to talk to Camera B from the internet. This is a limitation of NAT. Some routers overcome this limitation with an advanced setting called port translation.
As you can see from this example, you had to decide which camera to forward traffic to. Your router does not know what you want, so it cannot do this automatically.
Now that you understand why port forwarding is necessary it should be easier to set up port forwards in your router. Just remember that a port forward is telling your router what you want, so you need to be sure that you understand the reason why you want a forwarded port.
