taskschd.msc
Remove Adware
What is Adware?
Adware is one of the most widespread forms of unwanted software and it typically results in an uncontrolled display of aggressive ads inside the browser. The main goal of Adware apps is to gain more clicks on their ads in order to earn Pay-Per-Click revenue.
In general, the applications that can be categorized as Adware will not damage the system they get installed on, at least not in a direct way. However, the endless spam with obstructive online ads, pop-ups, banners, and box messages that are coming from them can make your brain browser difficult to use. Normally, any browser can get such an app added to it and this includes Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and even Safari for Adware apps that are compatible with Mac systems.
How Adware gets distributed
There are many different methods that can be used to get applications of this category installed onto more computers. Some of the most common ones are adding a disguised download link to the Adware or even attaching the app itself to a spam message, using clickbait ads and fake update requests to trick users into downloading the unwanted apps, and also putting the Adware inside a third-party app to get installed alongside the latter.
Although it can sometimes be difficult to keep your computer clean and to recognize misleading online content that may get an Adware installed on your computer, there are still several important rules of thumb that you can follow to decrease the chances of getting such unwanted apps in the future:
First, remember to never interact with anything on the Internet that looks suspicious or unsafe. This includes spam messages, obscure ads that could be clickbait, download prompts for software you don’t need, and more.
Next, be sure to only download new programs, apps, and other software from sources you know you can trust. Avoid downloading stuff from unknown and questionable sites or from sites that could be illegal and used for spreading pirated software.
Thirdly, never forget to check all the settings in the setup wizards of programs you want to install on your computer. If there is an unwanted Adware component added to a program you are about to install, you should usually be able to see it and leave it out of the installation by accessing the Advanced or Custom setup settings. If you aren’t given such an option, it’s best to not install the program.
The Browser Hijackers are a category of unwanted apps similar to Adware that also try to get added to your browser and flood it with aggressive ads. However, a Browser Hijacker will also try to make changes inside your browser and trigger automatic page-redirects.
The goals of these two categories of unwanted software are similar but the Hijackers tend to be even more aggressive because they oftentimes change the search engine of the user and also their starting page and new-tab page addresses. Those changes further increase the control of the Hijacker over your browser and allow it to show you even more ads as well as to suddenly redirect you to promoted sites without any sort of permission from your side.
How those apps can be dangerous
Even though most Adware and Browser Hijacker apps are not designed to be harmful, they can still end up exposing your computer to danger through their uncontrolled ads, redirects, banners, and other forms of promotional content. In some of the worst-case scenarios, the user may even get their computer infected with file-targeting Ransomware or sneaky Trojan Horse and Spyware threats after interacting with an unsafe app. That is why it is very important to uninstall any Adware or Hijacker apps you may currently have on your computer and we can help you do that within the next lines:

How to Remove Adware from a PC
What is Adware?
If you are constantly seeing popups, advertisements on sites where their shouldn’t be, or tech support scams then you are most likely infected with Adware. One of the biggest problems facing computers users is the growing rise of and problems with removing Adware programs. While adware has always been a problem, in the past these programs typically displayed a popup advertisement here and there or displayed advertisements within their own programs, but could be fairly easy to remove.
The current trend, though, is adware that has become more aggressive and displays constant streams of popups, injects advertisements into web sites, and adds their own ads into search result pages. This type of behavior can prevent the proper browsing of the web or using web sites. Even worse, they design the adware to make it extremely difficult to remove or not include any uninstall method at all.
For example, in the images below you can see adware programs that are injecting advertisements so that they overlay the content of web pages or displaying ads for malware. This makes browsing the web more of a chore than a useful and enjoyable activity.
Another major issues with adware is that some of them also install their own root certificates into Windows so that they can inject advertisements into secure SSL (https://) sites. What’s worse is that by using their own root certificates, it also allows adware programs to view anything that is sent to a remote site. This includes passwords, banking credentials, credit card details, or anything else that you may think is secure because you are using a SSL connection.
You can see an example of this type of issue in the image below where an adware program uses their own root certificate to sign the certificate being used by the IRS.gov site. This essentially means that they can listen in on anything you submit to the IRS site.
As you can see, the main goal of Adware has become to display advertisements in any way possible. Even if this means that they break the security of the computer. For this reasons, it must be a priority that users keep an updated security program installed on their computer, perform routine scans, and remove any adware that is found.
What are the Most Common Symptoms of Adware?
While not all adware programs are the same, for the most part they exhibit the same behavior. Below is a list of symptoms that users may encounter when infected with an adware program:
How is Adware installed on a Computer?
Adware is commonly installed by free programs that you download from the Internet. These free programs are either programs that were designed solely as a vehicle to distribute adware or by developers who want to earn revenue from their software. When someone downloads and installs these free programs, adware and other unwanted programs will be installed as well. Therefore, it is important that you pay close attention to license agreements and installation screens when installing anything off of the Internet.
Below you can see an installer that was created to install the legitimate Flash Player, but only after installing a lot of unwanted software on the computer.
That is why it is important to pay close attention to what installers are doing when you install something from the Internet. Also, if an installation screen offers you Custom or Advanced installation options, it is a good idea to select these as they will typically disclose what other 3rd party software will also be installed. Furthermore, If the license agreement or installation screens state that they are going to install a toolbar or other unwanted adware, it is advised that you immediately cancel the install and not use the free software.
Below I have written a guide that pretty much throws the kitchen sink at your computer. I did this there is not one particular software that can remove every bad program out there. By utilizing a myriad of free programs, you will have enough coverage to remove almost everything that may be bad on the computer. Furthermore, these steps will have you reset your browsers back to their default settings in order to remove extensions, addons, toolbars, and other unwanted browser programs.

How to remove Adware from Windows 10 (Virus removal guide)
The creators of adware do not think about whether you are watching these annoying ads or not, their main task is to demonstrate as many ads as possible, since they receive money just for the number of ad impressions. As a result, after the adware was installed on a computer, going online became a “bad idea”. As soon as the adware will notice that Internet access is open, it immediately tries to launch the browser and open in it a randomly selected ad site. Moreover, immediately after the opening of the first site, another opens, and if you do not quickly close the ad web sites, then after some time, the harmful activity of the adware will cause the computer to slow down very much or stop responding to your commands.
Therefore, if you open any page, even the one on which you have not previously seen ads, you are greeted by a large number of banners and pop-up ads, or when the computer is turned on, the browser starts automatically, immediately showing an ads, then your personal computer is infected with adware.
You need to check the computer as soon as possible, find and remove adware, as its presence can lead to slow operation of the operating system, slowing down the download speed of websites and even stealing your personal information and data that you enter in your Internet browser.

How to remove adware from Windows 10 manually
Read this “How to remove” section to know how to manually remove adware from Windows 10. Even if the tutorial does not work for you, there are several free adware removers below that can easily remove adware and thus rid your computer of annoying ads.
Delete questionable software using Windows Control Panel
Very often adware gets to the computer as part of various free programs. Therefore, it is obvious that by uninstalling these programs, you can also remove adware itself.
But before you open the Control Panel and remove suspicious programs, you need to do the following: make sure you have closed all internet browsers and other software. Press CTRL, ALT, DEL keys together to open the MS Windows Task Manager.
Click on the “Processes” tab, look for something suspicious that is the adware then right-click it and select “End Task” or “End Process” option. In most cases, adware masks itself to avoid detection by imitating legitimate Microsoft Windows processes. A process is particularly suspicious: it’s taking up a lot of memory (despite the fact that you closed all of your applications), its name is not familiar to you (if you are in doubt, you can always check the program by doing a search for its name in Google, Yahoo or Bing).
Now you need to open the Windows Control Panel. Click the Windows button, type “Control panel” in search and press Enter. Select “Programs and Features”, then “Uninstall a program”.
Look around the entire list of software installed on your computer. Most likely, one of them is the adware. Select the questionable program or the application that name is not familiar to you and uninstall it. We recommend taking this step very seriously, despite its simplicity!
Remove adware from Internet Explorer
In case the Internet Explorer browser was infected with adware and its settings were changed, then you need to reset Microsoft Internet Explorer to the state, which was when the MS Windows was installed on your PC.
First, run the Internet Explorer. Next, click the button in the form of gear ( ). It will show the Tools drop-down menu, press the “Internet Options” like below.
In the “Internet Options” window click on the Advanced tab, then click the Reset button. The IE will open the “Reset Internet Explorer settings” window as displayed in the following example. Select the “Delete personal settings” check box, then press “Reset” button.
You will now need to reboot your personal computer for the changes to take effect. If the reset did not help to remove adware from Internet Explorer, then check the list of installed extensions and delete all that cause even the slightest suspicion. Unfortunately, there are cases when to remove adware, you may need to completely reinstall the Internet Explorer browser.
Remove adware from Firefox
If you find that your Mozilla Firefox has been attacked by an adware or the adware has changed the browser settings, then you need to perform a special procedure, which is called “Refresh Firefox” (Reset Firefox settings). The “Reset settings” feature can solve most of the problems caused by the adware. Despite the fact that this procedure is called “Reset settings”, you do not need to be afraid. All your personal information will not be deleted, including bookmarks, browsing history, passwords, cookies, auto-fill data and personal dictionaries.
In the Help menu, select the “Troubleshooting Information” option. Another way to open the “Troubleshooting Information” screen – type “about:support” in the web-browser adress bar and press Enter. It will show the “Troubleshooting Information” page as shown on the image below. In the upper-right corner of this screen, click the “Refresh Firefox” button.
It will show the confirmation prompt. Further, press the “Refresh Firefox” button. With these actions you will start the process of resetting the browser settings. During this process, all extensions will be disabled, the browser settings that have been modified by the adware are restored.
Remove adware from Google Chrome
If you use the Chrome browser and during the adware attack on your computer, the browser settings have been changed or worse, the adware infected the browser itself, then resetting the settings can help you. Despite the fact that this is a standard function of Google Chrome, it has great capabilities and often helps to easily get rid of all malicious actions of adware. When performing a reset, all your personal data will not be deleted, bookmarks, passwords, auto-fill data will be saved.
Fix infected web browsers shortcuts that have been modified by adware
During the attack on the computer, in addition to changing the browser settings and installing malicious browser extensions, the adware can also change the shortcuts of all installed browsers. The adware can add an argument like “http://site.address” into the Target property of the desktop shortcut file for the Firefox, Google Chrome, MS Edge and Internet Explorer. Due to this, it is very important when manually removing the adware, you need to check all the browser shortcuts, otherwise you can allow the adware to be installed on the computer simply by running the browser using an infected shortcut.
Delete scheduled tasks that were created by adware
Once installed, the adware can add a task in to the Windows Task Scheduler Library. Due to this, every time when you run your machine, the adware will launch the web browser and open in it different ad sites. So, you need to check the Task Scheduler Library and get rid of all malicious tasks which have been created by adware.
Press Windows and R keys on your keyboard at the same time. It will display a prompt which titled with Run. In the text field, type “taskschd.msc” (without the quotes) and press OK. Task Scheduler window opens. In the left-hand side, press “Task Scheduler Library”, as shown on the screen below.

Further click on it with the right mouse button and select Delete as displayed below.
Task scheduler, delete a task
Repeat this step, if you have found a few tasks that have been created by adware. Once is complete, close the Task Scheduler window.

Install AdBlocker
After completing all the steps above, you were able to remove adware from Windows 10. Now it’s time to think about how to protect your computer from adware and other malicious software. One of the simplest ways to deal with adware is to block all malicious and misleading ads. Since adware writers often use misleading advertising to force users to go to a malicious site that can infect a computer with an adware or force users to download and install an adware on their computer. By installing an AdBlocker like AdGuard, you’re able to block malicious and misleading ads, autoplaying video ads and other annoying ads on web-sites.
How did you get infected with adware
The adware is bundled within certain free software. So always read carefully the setup screens, disclaimers, ‘Terms of Use’ and ‘Software license’ appearing during the install procedure. Additionally pay attention for optional programs that are being installed along with the main application. Ensure that you unchecked all of them! Also, run an AdBlocker that will help to stop malicious, misleading, illegitimate or untrustworthy webpages.
Finish words
After completing the few simple steps outlined above, your computer should be clean from adware and other malware. The Google Chrome, Edge, Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer will no longer reroute you to various undesired ads. Unfortunately, if the steps does not help you, then you have caught a new adware, and then the best way – ask for help in our Spyware/Malware removal forum.
How to Remove Adware and Spyware
Adware removal is a multi-step process
What to Know
This article explains how to get pesky adware and spyware off your system.
Immediately: Disconnect From the Internet
If your system is heavily infected, you’ll need access to a clean computer to download the necessary tools. If you don’t have a second computer, ask a friend to download the tools for you onto a USB drive. If you plan to use a USB drive, make sure both your computer and your friend’s computer both have autorun disabled.
The first thing you should do is close all open browser windows and applications (including email) and disconnect your computer from the internet. If you’re connected to the internet using an Ethernet cable, just remove the cable from your computer.
If you’re connected via Wi-Fi, here’s how to disconnect it:
Type «network» into the search bar and select Network Status from the list of options.
Select Wi-Fi.
Press the toggle button to turn Wi-Fi off.
Try a Standard Uninstall
A surprising number of applications labeled as adware and spyware have fully functioning uninstallers that will cleanly remove the program.
Before moving on to more complex steps, check the Add/Remove Programs list in the Windows Control Panel. If the unwanted program is listed, highlight it and select Remove. Once the adware or spyware is uninstalled, reboot the computer.
Scan Your Computer
After you’ve disconnected from the internet, removed any adware or spyware listed in Add/Remove Programs, and rebooted the computer, the next step is to run a full system scan using an up-to-date antivirus scanner.
Run the scan in Safe Mode if your antivirus program allows it.
If you don’t have an antivirus program installed, consider picking one of these top-rated antivirus scanners. Allow it to clean, quarantine, or delete as appropriate.
When you use adware or antivirus removal software, remember to always update its database of potential viruses before you begin. New viruses can appear daily, and quality anti-adware tools provide updated support on a regular basis.
Use a Spyware Removal Program
Many good spyware removal tools are available for free. MalwareBytes, for example, is a popular option that does a good job of removing scareware—rogue software that hijacks your computer and tries to scare you into purchasing «protection.»
Get Clear Access to the Problem
While scanning your system in Safe Mode is good practice, it may not be enough to thwart some malware. If the adware or spyware persists despite the above efforts, you’ll need to get access to the drive without allowing the adware or spyware to load.
The most effective means to get clean access to the drive is to use a BartPE Bootable CD. Once you’ve booted to the BartPE CD, you can access the file manager, locate the installed antivirus, and rescan the system. Or, locate the offending files and folders and manually delete them.
Undo the Residual Damage
After removing the active infestation, make sure the adware or spyware won’t simply reintegrate itself when the computer reconnects to the internet. Before reconnecting, reset your browser start and home pages.
Make sure your HOSTS file hasn’t been hijacked, and make sure undesirable websites weren’t added to your Trusted Sites Zone.
