The MCU timeline is a little complicated

It began with 2008’s “Iron Man,” a film that introduced the world to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark with the hint that he could be part of something greater. Twenty-five films later, the story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still being told, albeit with various tributaries and detours that introduce new characters and new worlds that may or may not cross paths one day. Each film in the MCU stands on its own to some degree, but like building blocks, they all connect as part of one interconnected universe. And in that way, watching the Marvel movies in order tells one grand story.

There are a couple of different ways to watch the MCU movies, but below we run down how to watch the Marvel films in chronological order. Indeed, some films like “Captain Marvel” and “Captain America: The First Avenger” are full-on prequels set in the 1990s and 1940s, respectively, and with such intricate storytelling throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you can watch the films in timeline order and it all continues to make sense.

But if you’re a purist, we’ve also included the release order list of MCU movies, as well as which Marvel films you can stream on Disney+ right now.

Marvel Movies in Chronological Order

Most of the Marvel movies take place one right after the other, but others chronicle events that occur concurrently with events from other films. For instance, the events of “Thor: Ragnarok” take place around the same time as the events of “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” with both films leading up to “Avengers: Infinity War.”

The MCU story is divided up into three phases that make up The Infinity Saga, a story that begins with “Iron Man” and ends with “Avengers: Endgame.” Phase Four began with the Disney+ series “WandaVision” and also includes “Black Widow” and “Shang-Chi.”

The latest MCU film, “Thor: Love and Thunder,” takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame” and appears to be set some duration after “Doctor Strange 2” and “Ms. Marvel.”

Here’s how to watch the MCU movies in chronological order of events:

Marvel Movies in Release Order

Marvel Studios first began independently producing its own films with 2008’s “Iron Man,” and the first few MCU movies were distributed by Paramount Pictures (with Universal distributing “The Incredible Hulk”) before Disney bought Marvel and released every Marvel Studios movie after “Captain America: The First Avenger.” The exceptions are, of course, the three standalone “Spider-Man” films, which while official MCU canon, were released by Sony Pictures.

So here’s how to watch all the Marvel movies in order of release:

Is It Better to Watch Marvel Movies in Chronological Order or Release Order?

While the overall story makes sense either way, if it’s your first time in the MCU you should probably start by watching the films in release order. Not only is that the order in which the films were made, but you can also chart the evolution and refinement of MCU storytelling as Marvel Studios worked out the kinks and perfected how to make a Marvel movie.

But if you’ve seen most or all of the Marvel movies, watching them in chronological order is a fun experience. It doesn’t change any of the story, and it’s definitely weird to watch “Captain Marvel” so early and then wait 20 movies for Brie Larson’s character to ever be mentioned again. But it allows you to appreciate how well Marvel retrofitted its prequel movies into the existing timeline.

When the Marvel Disney+ Shows Take Place

WandaVision

The first Marvel Disney+ show takes place three weeks after the events of “Avengers: Endgame” and is nestled between “Endgame” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” takes place six months after the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” but before the events of “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”

Loki

“Loki” begins in the immediate wake of “Avengers: Endgame,” but it’s unclear when the MCU-altering events of the Season 1 finale take place.

Hawkeye

“Hawkeye” takes place at Christmastime in 2024, about a year after the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” and concurrent with the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”

Moon Knight

A specific timeline date for “Moon Knight” hasn’t been revealed other than the fact that it takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.”

Ms. Marvel

The teen-skewing “Ms. Marvel” clearly takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” and it seems like some significant time has passed since the world was saved.

Which Marvel Movies Are Streaming on Disney Plus?

Almost every MCU movie is streaming on Disney+, aside from “The Incredible Hulk” (streaming on HBO Max) and the three Tom Holland-fronted “Spider-Man” films (“Far From Home” is streaming on FuboTV). But “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is now available to purchase on Digital, Blu-ray and DVD.

“Thor: Love and Thunder” will likely be streaming on Disney+ sometime in August.

Across more than a decade and an incredible number of films, TV shows, web series, and one-shots, the MCU has sprawled in size, and even for the most ardent Marvel fans it’s a serious challenge to both watch everything and keep your head around the timeline.

We’ve put together a chronological timeline of the Marvel movies, shows, and more, so you know which order to watch the Marvel movies in. Alternatively, if you’d prefer to watch them in the order that they actually came out, we’ve also put together a release date order for all the shows and films.

Marvel has also issued its own official timeline for the movies in the book Marvel Studios: The First Ten Years, which does its best to give specific years for when the various films are set (up to, but not including, Captain Marvel & Avengers: Endgame):

How to watch the Marvel movies and TV shows in chronological order

There are a couple of disclaimers to our list below. First up, the timeline gets more complex as it goes on, so it gets harder to order the films perfectly. For example, Doctor Strange begins just before Captain America: Civil War, but takes a time jump and ends way after it, while Black Panther kicks off shortly after Civil War, but the whole story likely plays out before the bulk of Doctor Strange.

It doesn’t help that Marvel broke its own timeline. There are a few little inconsistencies dotted around the place, but the most egregious is Spider-Man: Homecoming, which claims to take place eight years after the New York attack in the first Avengers. That would set the film in 2020 – two or three years after Avengers: Infinity War, which Marvel itself claims is set in 2017 despite ample evidence that the Snap took place in the spring of 2018.

It’s a pretty minor gaffe in the scheme of things, but it’s a reminder not to take the MCU’s chronological timeline too seriously – even Marvel itself can’t keep it all straight, so as long as you watch things in about the right order you’ll be fine.

If you want the visual cliff notes, Marvel has now released every single post-credit scene up to Endgame (including Captain Marvel’s) in order in one giant Twitter thread, so you can revisit every little tease as they built the MCU up.

Disney+ also has its own timeline order. However, we have only used this to inform the shows in the phase four section, as parts of the list conflict with previous ones from Marvel Studios. For example, it claims that Thor: The Dark World takes place before Iron Man 3, which would set this film in 2013, and not 2012 as previous sources stated.

We’ve split everything into Marvel’s ‘phases’, but there are some grey areas: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was made within Phase Three, but is set almost immediately after its predecessor; Captain Marvel was one of the final Phase Three films, but is set before most of Phase One, and some of the TV shows sit awkwardly between the different movie phases.

In addition, though Marvel claims that Spider-Man: Far From Home is the last film in Phase Three, it takes place after the first two Disney+ shows – so we’ve adjusted the order to accommodate for this.

Without further ado, here’s our chronological ordering of the Marvel film universe as it stands right now. The films are in bold, TV shows are not. You can watch the majority of the films and shows by signing up for Disney Plus, with the exception of the Spider-Man films and a few other titles – these are marked with an asterisk. It’s worth noting that Loki takes place in its own separate branch of time. Technically, the first episode picks up during 2012 in the Battle of New York. However, seeing as the scene that Loki time-travels from is in Avengers: Endgame, the show makes a lot more sense in the context of all the other films as it deals with topics such as the Infinity Stones.

What If…? also features stories that are scattered throughout the MCU timeline. Again, the show needs the context of previous films in order to make sense.

Finally, Spider-Man: No Way Home does draw on other Spider-Man universe films, but we have not included these in the official MCU timeline.

How to watch the Marvel films and TV series in release date order

If you’d prefer to watch the films and series in the order in which they were released, then this is a lot less complicated. We’ve listed below everything that has come out so far in the MCU. For the TV series, we’ve listed the date from when the first episode took place, and for how long the show was on the air.

We haven’t included the DVD shorts on here – you’ll be able to find them with each of the movies, or on Disney+. As with the above list, the movies are marked in bold.

1. Captain America: The First Avenger

Starring Chris Evans, the first Captain America is the starting point that connects all the amazing Marvel movies to come. So, if you’re planning to watch Marvel movies in chronological order, it’s best to start with the star-studded Captain America. The storyline takes place during World War 2, which was roughly in 1942. The plot takes you back in time, where Captain America, who is the alter ego of Steve Rogers, takes on Red Skull. Both were subjects to an experiment in the military, where they were enhanced into superhuman militants. Cap was later frozen in ice, only to be shifted off into time and space, leading up with the Avengers in the present day. This movie marks the starting point of the rise of The Avengers, and is one marvel cinematic experience that you can’t miss out on.

2. Captain Marvel

Jumping ahead in time, the next Marvel film is Captain Marvel which takes its setting in the late 90s. The role of Starforce member, Vers, is played by Brie Larson. This movie brought back strong nostalgic memories of all the 90s trends, ranging from the greatest music hits, and Carol wearing the Nine Inch Nails T-shirt. Carol was a former US Air Force pilot, who after a crash was exposed to the Tesseract that contained super-human cosmic powers. She was later turned into a Kree-human upon a blood transfusion, where all old memories were lost. This is when she was turned into the ultimate Kree weapon.

3. Iron Man

We all love Tony Stark, played by the most talented and jovial Robert Downey Jr. Iron Man was the first ever Marvel movie to hit the screens, but has been placed third in this list if you’re planning on watching all Marvel movies in order. Tony was one of the most powerful men of his time, soon after the death of his parents, where he was placed as CEO of Stark Industries. He lived a callous life of a playboy for years, until he was kidnapped by the Ten Rings in Afghanistan. He was taken hostage to create deathly missiles, which by using spare parts of technology, created a prototype armor suit that helped him escape. Upon his return, he worked on that very prototype, creating a stronger and more advanced version of it. Tony used it to fight back against his captors and Obadiah Stane – the very first of the Iron Man nemesis. After a victory, he revealed himself as Iron Man. From there, he was the founding member of the Avengers.

4. Iron Man 2

Iron Man 2 offers you the clash of the iron suits. Almost a year later after Tony’s first clash with Obadiah Stane the iron Monger, Tony then goes heads on with Ivan Vanko (Whiplash) who was the son of ex Stark Industries employee and disgraced scientist Anton Vanko. Ivan creates a second iron suit similar to Tony’s, replicating a miniature arc reactor to take him down. The plot thickens when Tony discovers he’s being slowly poisoning himself. The palladium, the core material in the Arc reactor that was keeping him alive, was causing a reaction. However, Tony overcomes it with help from S.H.I.E.L.D agents Nick Fury and Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), curing his setback and taking down Whiplash.

5. The Incredible Hulk

We’re huge fans of the big green man, who was often misunderstood in all his rage and might. The Incredible Hulk films might not be recognized as part of the MCU extravaganza, but the first Hulk debut hit fans worldwide, and is considered as part of it; despite strangely. Again, if your target is watching Marvel movies in order to chronological events, don’t skip out on The Incredible Hulk. The first film; The Incredible Hulk, stars Edwrd Norton, who plays the character of Bruce Banner (Hulk). Banner was on the run, being hunted down by general Thaddeus Ross (Thunderbolt.) Banner was exposed to gamma radiation, infiltrating his cells and giving him the power of unimaginable force, turning him into the Hulk every time he felt enraged. The military is after him, on the hunt to expose him and his powers. But due to no avail, General Ross infected soldier Emil Blonsky, with the same serum that created The Hulk. It created a bigger and worse abomination that spun out of control and created a killing machine. Banner eventually convinces Ross to help take down Blonsky.

6. Thor

The beautiful and bronzy character of Thor was done justice by the amazing Chris Hemsworth. The first film was released in 2011, which was a great year for MCU. Thor, the God of Thunder, was banished to Earth by his father Odin after having taken to extreme measures, fighting the Frost Giants who broke treaty by forcefully entering the palace. Thor adapts to the local human life on Earth, guided by scientist Jane Foster. In the meantime, Loki, who was still in Asgard, plots to take over the crown upon finding out he was adopted. Eventually, Thor had to face Loki, where in the end, witnessed his brother “die.”

7. The Avengers

Superheroes link up! The Avengers is the first appearance where all of our favorite superheroes team up. Almost a year after Loki (God of Mischief) supposedly “dies” he heads to Earth to gain access to the cube; tesseract, which was the source of unlimited energy. Upon this, director of S.H.I.E.L.D Nick Fury, brings in the best team; Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, Hawk Eye, Black Widow and Thor. This is where the Avengers were first created, eventually catching Loki and sending it back to Asgard.

8. Iron Man 3

Part 3 of the Iron Man film series leaves Tony Stark at the crossroads. He’s completely fixed on creating newer and improved suits; rather extremely fixated on it. He believes that after the New York incident, it’s up to him to protect those he loves. He spends all his time around the suits, even damaging the personal relationships he has with Pepper. Things shake him up when his enemy called the Mandarin occestrated several bombings, and even targets the president.

9. Thor: Dark World

After having taken down his brother (Loki) in The Avengers film, Thor makes his way back to Earth. Thor:Dark World might not be as good as the first part, but it was filled with action and humor. The storyline revolves around the ancient Gods of Asgard and how they once defeated an insidious race called the Dark Elves. However, not all were killed; survivors neutralized and their deadly weapon called the Aether, buried in a location secret to them. Eons later, the Aether was soon discovered by Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman, where she was taken as Aether’s host. Upon this, Thor has no option but to take her back to Asgard. He must protect her against the Dark Elf Malekith, before he uses her to destroy the Nine Worlds.

10. Captain America: Winter Soldier

After the Battle of New York that took place in the Avengers, Marvel’s Captain America takes on a quieter role of life in Washington DC. He tried his best to adjust to a normal human way of life, but could that really be the case for our war hero? Things took a turn when one SHIELD agent was under attack. The world was under a series of attacks when he decided to join ties with the Black Widow. The fight against the Winter Soldier was not something the dynamic duo could manage on their own. They then found a new ally that goes by the name Falcon.

11. Guardians of the Galaxy

In another universe, Star-Lord, played by the quirky Chris Pratt, roams from galaxy to galaxy in search of a potential buyer for a superiorly powerful Infinity Stone. He stole this stone while taken captage by Gamora, Thanos’s adopted daughter. At the same time, the famous duo Rocket and Groot too, try to track down Star-Lord to get their hands on the stone. There was a huge bounty put over their heads to retrieve the stolen Stone. After they were captured and sent to prison, where they met another friendly ally called Drax. The plot soon thickens when the team defends the stone from getting into the wrong hands; Ronan’s hands, from destroying the entire universe. 12. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Part two of the Guardians of the Galaxy is the continuation of the awesome adventures of our favorite galaxy heroes. This part is about Peter Quill’s (Star-Lord) actual family and what happened to them. His father, Ego, turns up with a fairly happy picture painted, but that’s only what lies on the surface. Ego soon is discovered to be a power hungry psychopath that initiated a mass murder. They have to destroy him, which won’t be too easy. However, the team made a new friend called Mantis, whose power was empathy, allowing others to feel it and alter their “egos”.

13. Avengers: Age of Ultron

If you’re keeping track with The Avengers films and would now like to watch all Marvel movies in order, make sure you’re keeping up with this list. After the Guardians of the Galaxy vol.2 we have the Avengers: Age of Ultron lined up. It’s the one where all the superheroes team up to fight a new enemy that was created by Tony Stark. Ultron was initially designed as a peacemaker bot, who’s coding upon corruption turned it into a nemesis. The world again holds together by a thin threat. It’s up to the Avengers to save the day once again.

14. Ant-Man

While the Avengers were battling Ultron, we have Paul Rudd who played the character of Scott Lang (Ant-Man) and was later added to the Avengers team. Scott was released from prison after 3 years on account of burglary. When released, he found that his old life was all out of sorts. His ex-wife now engaged to a police officer and he was not allowed to see his kid unless he paid child support. Because of this, he took on a burglary job alongside an ex-cell-mate and two others upon not being able to score a regular job. During the breakin, he stumbles upon a “regular” motorcycle suit. He eventually tries it on, presses a button and then shrinks down to size. You need to watch this marvel movie to unveil the entire plot.

15. Captain America: Civil War

After the major backlash caused in the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, the Avengers team was given strict orders by a governing body. They were asked to sign the Sokovia Accords contract. This stated that the team were to hold back on every action until given orders to interfere. However, there was no common ground between the team, where Iron Man and Captain America split on matters of different interest. This was all orchestrated to split the Avengers up and the real villain behind it was Zemo. Zemo later on revealed that Buck, a friend of Captain, was the one who killed Tony’s parents. This drew a wedge between the two.

16. Black Widow

Another additional super-hero film casting our favorite leading lady in the Avengers is Black Widow. This film is next on the list if you’re planning on watching Marvel movies in order. The same year, after signing the Sokovia Accords ledger, Natasha, aka Black Widow digs deeper into her past. Her past that led her to become the Black Widow. She is constantly tracked by a source that is going through all lengths to bring her down. Her real mission is to protect all the future and current Black Widows who suffered a similar fate to hers.

17. Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man: Homecoming is another reboot to the MCU spiderman franchise. If you’re here to watch Marvel movies in order of its actual chronological events, this plot is a sequel to the Captain America: Civil War film, where Peter made his debut. After his experience with the Avengers, Peter had to return back to his normal life, where he lived with his aunt May. Struggling to keep up with his normal life, Parker’s head was elsewhere. He set out to prove himself to Tony Stark that he was much more than just your friendly neighborhood spider-man. However, things spiraled out of control when he captured the attention of Vulture, who threatened all life around him.

18. Black Panther

The next Marvel movie to watch in Chronological order is Black Panther. This film hit the screens by storm and became a new favorite after The Avengers. It’s synopsis is about T’Challa (Black Panther) who after the Captain America: Civil War events headed back to his home in Wakanda. The character was played by the late Chadwick Boseman, who not only was a spectacular actor, but an even humble human being. He was to take his rightful place as King. However, the plot thickens when an old nemesis appears to challenge T’Challa and his position. This puts Wakanda and all its life at great risk.

19. Doctor Strange

Straight from the Marvel studios, we have Doctor Strange. It’s about a globally renowned neurosurgeon called Dr. Steven Strange, whose life takes a different turn of events after a traffic car accident. It led him to completely lose control and movement of his hands. He set out to find traditional medicine, hoping it would cure him. However, it failed and it embarked him on another journey to find help in an unlikely place called Kamar-Taj. However, the place was not just for healing, but rather sprouted unseen dark forces that were set to manipulate reality. With his new powers, Strange must decide to use it to defend dark forces from destroying the world or return back to his old life.

20. Thor: Ragnarok

Next on the list to watch marvel movies in order, we have Thor: Ragnarok. Thor’s world is about to come crumbling down. His brother Loki, has now taken over Asgard, their powerful sister Hela showed up to take over the throne and Thor is now imprisoned on the complete opposite side of the universe. In order to get released and save Asgard, we must win his way out of an alien competition. To do that, he needs to beat his fellow-team Avenger, The Hulk.

21. Ant-Man and The Wasp

This Marvel Cinematic Universe film brings on a new chapter for Ant Man and his adventures. After the events of The Avengers Civil War, it left Scott (Ant Man) in the middle squandering over being a father or a superhero. He takes on a new mission alongside The Wasp, to uncover hidden secrets from the past.

22. Avengers: Infinity War

Coming to one of the most terrifying showdowns in the Marvel Cinematic Universe catalogue, we have Avengers: Infinity War. This binds the entire list of Marvel movies closer to the end. Thanos is the main villain in Infinity War, where he sets out to collect all 6 Infinity stones that bring on powers so deep and strong that is purely unimaginable. The Avengers and other allies team up to stop what is possibly the end of the world’s existence.

23. Avengers: Endgame

After Thanos wiped out half the universe in The Avengers: Infinity Wars, the remaining Avengers take on one last stand to reverse the damage created.

24. Spider-Man: Far From Home

In the next Peter Parker adventure, we have the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel! He returns back to his regular life where he plans to join his best friend Ned, and new flame MJ on a European vacation. Peter had planned to lay low for a while, but things soon got out of control when Nick Fury tracked dangerous and mysterious elemental creatures that were leaving behind trails of havoc across the continent. Peter helps out Fury and defeats the villain behind it all.

25. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Taking on a different tone in the MCU experience, we have Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. He has to confront the uneasy past he put behind him, but is soon drawn to the unspoken mysteries of the Ten Rings organization.

26. Eternals

Near the end of watching Marvel movies in order, we have Eternals. This Marvel Studios film is about a species of ancient aliens who were forced out of hiding in light of events taken place in MCU’s Avengers: Endgame. The plot takes a toll when they have to face mankind’s oldest yet most terrifying enemy, the Deviants.

27. Spider-Man: No Way Home

Coming towards the end of how to watch Marvel movies in order, we have the amazing Spider-Man: No Way Home multiverse series. Spider-Man’s identity has been released for the very first time. It brings in great conflict with his regular life. The story picks up when he reaches out to Doctor Strange in order to reverse his secret, the spell creates a hole in the world. This reaction releases all the past and most mighty villains that Spider-Man ever had to face, including the multiverse versions of himself.

Marvel Movies In Order: How To Watch All 34 MCU Movies and Series Chronologically

If you want to see the Marvel and Avengers movies in order as they happened, starting with the World War II-set Captain America: The First Avenger, we’ve listed all 33 MCU movies and series in chronological order, in one guide!

So while Iron Man, set and released in 2008, can claim the banner as the first of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, within its story, Chris Evans has got Robert Downey Jr. beat. That’s because Evans’ origin story as Captain America in The First Avenger takes action in 1942. There, we’re also first fully introduced to the Tessarect, an energy cube that initializes the Infinity Saga, climaxing in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.

The next movie set in the timeline is Captain Marvel, the blockbuster with a Blockbuster, set in 1995 with Brie Larson starring as the cosmic Carol Danvers. And then it’s time to hit the start with Iron Man and RDJ’s world-making turn as Tony Stark. The movies can be seen in release order after that, except for 2021’s Black Widow, which is set in the aftermath of 2016’s Captain America: Civil War.

Through the epic finale of Endgame (which essentially completed the first 3 phases of the MCU), there was a forward time jump of 5 years, placing most everything in Phase 4 and onward in the near future. Phase 4 started at the movies with Shang-Chi, and has been inviting its lineup of series to really do some heavy lifting, with Loki, Wandavision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Hawkeye pushing the story forward. Then there was the gigantic one-two Spider-Man punch with Far From Home and No Way Home. Moon Knight, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and now Thor: Love and Thunder are all set chronologically by release after that. As a Marvel fan and comic nerd, I get asked this question often: What’s the perfect order to watch Marvel movies? How to Watch Every Marvel Movie in the Perfect Order?

While the MCU officially started in 2008 with the release of Iron Man, you could technically start there and watch in release order. But as a huge Marvel fan, I don’t believe that’s the first Marvel film that you should watch, even though I will give you a list of the MCU in release order and where you can find them to watch them.

With the release of new Marvel properties in the last year, I felt this January 2018 post needed to be updated, so the timeline and content have been updated to reflect shows and movies released since the initial post.

How to watch every Marvel property in the perfect order

For the purpose of this post, I’m sticking with Disney/Marvel Studios productions and skipping other movie houses, but including ABC Studios and Netflix. I have for you, the Ultimate Guide to the MCU Timeline. This is how to watch Marvel movies in order if you want to do a Marvel movies marathon.

As a super fan, I’m incredibly vested in the MCU and Marvel properties. There are a multitude of movies and TV shows, so it’s hard to know where to start if you haven’t been watching for years.

As any good Marvel fan knows, it’s all connected. Each Marvel TV show and movie is really designed to be consumed in a certain order.

If you started in the middle somewhere along the line, well, you’re stuck with what you’ve been watching all along; but if you’re just starting to fall in love with Marvel, this is the ideal order for watching each of those properties.

The timelines are confusing, but the continuity is key when you are trying to determine in which order to watch Marvel movies and TV shows.

I’ve created a visual timeline of the MCU to help you see where all of the pieces fall in line and create that timeline for you. This timeline includes Phase 1, 2, 3, and parts of 4 in perfect viewing order. Here’s how to watch all the Marvel movies in the perfect order.

With Avengers: Endgame coming out in April, I wanted to make sure to fill in any gaps in the timeline so you have all the background in the MCU.

Movies are in black, TV shows in red, one-shots and webisodes in gray.

MCU Phase 1: Notes

The Marvel Cinematic Universe also sometimes includes connected properties such as shorts, Marvel One-Shots, and movie tie-in comics.

The shorts and the Marvel One-Shots excluded from the timeline, as they are brief standalone stories that were initially developed to provide backstory for characters or things seen in the movies. Two of them later become full-fledged shows.

On a side note, The Incredible Hulk, while officially part of Phase 1, is skippable if you wanted to pick an item to ditch. I truly believe if you skipped this movie, you’d not be at a loss for anything contextually. It’s quite literally, my least favorite movie in the MCU.

MCU Continuity

As much as I’m a super fan, there’s always a bit of continuity weirdness across the movies themselves, and then when you jump to the TV shows, it adds a bit more.

I remember when we interviewed Jed Whedon on the set of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and the discussion we had about canon and continuity between film and TV.

One of my all-time favorite moments is when Bucky references a redhead as he and Cap are walking into the cave during Captain America: Civil War. You know he’s talking about Dottie Underwood, but only if you watched “Agent Carter”.

Steve Rogers: You remember that time we had to ride back from Rockaway Beach in the back of that freezer truck?

Bucky Barnes: Was that the time you used our train money to buy hot dogs?

Steve Rogers: You blew three bucks trying to win that stuffed bear for a redhead.

Bucky Barnes: What was her name again?

Steve Rogers: Dolores. You called her Dot.

Bucky Barnes: She’s gotta be a hundred years old right now…

Steve Rogers: So are we, pal.

In Season 1 of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” we had the release of two Marvel movies the incorporation of those plots. Episode 8 of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” airing after the release of Thor: The Dark World, takes place directly after those events.

Later in Season 1, episode 16 aired the same weekend as the release of Captain America: Winter Soldier. The events portrayed on “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” take place at the same time as the film, with the episode ending with a scene straight from Captain America: The Winter Soldier of Nick Fury being pursued by assailants pretending to be cops and finally encountering the Winter Soldier.

Season 2, episode 19 also has a crossover for Avengers: Age of Ultron when Coulson gives Agent Maria Hill the location of the base of Hydra’s leader, Baron Wolfgang von Strucker so the Avengers can defeat Hydra.

Currently in its fifth season, “S.H.I.E.L.D.” has taken our heroes to the future, but the crossovers in these subsequent seasons seem to have come to an end. We’ll see if that stays as is, or changes with an onslaught of new films in MCU Phase 4.

Netflix’s “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones” also have sketchy timelines. Early in the series, the Battle of New York is referred to as “The Incident” and occurred about 2 years earlier.

Although the show lacks interaction with any Marvel movie characters, it could take place almost anywhere on the timeline between Thor: A Dark World and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Given that we don’t have any concrete evidence of the timeline, in our timeline, we placed it concurrently with the second season of S.H.I.E.L.D. to stay close to the time it was actually released.

MCU Phase 3 Questions and Timelines

Doctor Strange

While you can watch it as a stand-alone, you still feel the need to place it on the continuum. Doctor Strange is a difficult one to place.

There a scene in the movie of the Avengers Tower, which leads me to believe the film takes place after of Avengers (post-2012). Captain America: Winter Soldier establishes that Stephen Strange is already a threat, but we don’t really know why (2014).

We also know that fans took to Twitter to ask Doctor Strange co-writer C. Robert Cargill if the movie was set before Captain America: The Winter Soldier. (Jasper Sitwell named Stephen Strange as one of Project Insight’s potential targets). But Cargill said that Doctor Strange begins in 2016.

If we go with that theory and the fact that there are awards with 2016 dates in the opening sequences of the film, this timing only kind of works. You can finds arguments/debates all over the web as to why certain things don’t make sense (can’t you always?).

But with his recovery and training, it seems unlikely that he could have had all of that occur in just a few months. It seems more likely that the accident and recovery happened more like 2014 and the movie takes place/culminates in 2016.

Although, with time manipulation on the table, who really knows.

Thor: Ragnarok

Thor: Ragnarok. Here’s another one that’s a bit convoluted to place. I believe it takes place about the same time as Civil War.

Thor has been doing his own thing for a couple years since Avengers: Age of Ultron. The timeline makes sense when you take that into account, but you have to also remember that Marvel has never been tied to diehard timelines, especially in standalone films (like this and Doctor Strange)

Thor: Ragnarok isn’t an Avengers movie in the same way Civil War or a dedicated Avengers movie is. Its job isn’t to set up the next film in the series, despite the fact that there is canon and it will set up material that you’ll appreciate having gotten from watching it.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

And then there’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, which, in my opinion, breaks the whole timeline and is a giant cluster.

Spider-Man: Homecoming uses an epic MCU moment to depict the timeline, but it doesn’t add up.

One of the earliest moments in Spider-Man: Homecoming occurs just after New Your City is destroyed in the Battle of New York in Avengers (2012).

According to the title card in the film, the film takes place 8 years later, making it 2020. Since 2012, which we’ve basically all been led to believe is the year that Avengers was set in, most of the MCU movies have been released in the year they were set in—Civil War in 2016, Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 breaks that rule and takes place immediately after the first movie in 2014 even though it was released in 2016.

That’s 3 years after it was released and takes place after the events of Avengers: Infinity War. It makes zero sense.

We have loads of circumstantial evidence. I’m no lawyer but…

We know Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 takes place in 2014. The title card says 1980 and then we jump forward 34 years. The title card in the prologue of Guardians of the Galaxy does essentially the same thing, jumping forward 26 years from 1988. That puts the setting of both films in 2014.

Kevin Feige has confirmed more than once in various interviews that Avengers: Infinity War takes place 4 years after the events in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, making that roughly 2018, the same year it’s being released.

This sets the events of Avengers: Infinity War, the movie that hasn’t even happened yet, BEFORE Spider-Man: Homecoming. Are you following?

There are also some calendar shots in Spider-Man: Homecoming that confirms that we know Civil War takes place in 2016, which also means that Spider-Man: Homecoming can’t exist in 2020, especially when the movie opens with unstable hand-cam footage of Spider-Man in Civil War before diving right into Spider-Man: Homecoming.

This isn’t the time that the MCU has broken its own timeline, either. There are lots of examples, but that’s a whole other post.

For years, most fans work with the idea that Phase 1 of the MCU (Iron Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, and The Avengers) each took place in the year in or before they were released.

Before The Avengers was released, Marvel issued an official timeline correcting this line of thought. Iron Man has been confirmed to have taken place in 2010.

Captain America: The First Avenger, Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, and Thor all took place within the span of a week—referred to as “Nick Fury’s Big Week” and details the Avengers being introduced for the first time. These five movies take place in 2011.

New MCU Films

Black Panther pounced to screen February 16, 2018. It’s now available on Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital.

Avengers: Infinity War battled it out in the form of an epic heist movie with Thanos at the center of it all April 29, 2018.

Ant-Man and the Wasp released July 6, 2018, and Captain Marvel released March 8, 2019. We’re excited to see females as the billed title characters in both of these films (Evangeline Lilly as the Wasp and Brie Larson as Carol Danvers).

Avengers: Endgame released May 3, 2019.

Other MCU Properties

ABC’s “Inhumans” in fall 2017 wasn’t seemingly well-received, but I’ll mention it because it’s Marvel canon.

New Marvel shows are now constantly popping up, but they aren’t all within Marvel canon.

In spring of 2018, “Cloak & Dagger” premiered on Freeform. “Marvel’s New Warriors” was originally intended for Freeform, as well, but is now being shopped around for another network and still in limbo.

Season 2 of the Emmy-winning “Jessica Jones” hit Netflix on March 8, 2018.

“Luke Cage” Season 2 wrapped up filming in November 2017 in NYC and aired June 2018.

“Iron Fist” Season 2 began filming in December 2017 and aired in September 2018. Honestly, I didn’t care, but I’ll try to update it for my readers. Personally, Danny Rand is my least favorite of the whole group of The Defenders. I think he’s a whiny brat.

Season 3 of “Daredevil” was announced back in 2016, and finally dropped October 2018.

“Marvel’s Runaways” aired on Hulu in November 2017 and season 2 aired December 2018.

“The Punisher” Season 1 hit Netflix in November 2017 and season 2 aired January 2019.

“The Defenders” hit Netflix summer 2017, but no second season has been announced, although it doesn’t look good with all of the individual shows canceled.
