Weather grammar

Now we can go over the basics of weather grammar. There are three different weather-related grammar categories for talking about the weather in the present tense:

When talking about weather in the past, the grammar follows the same basic grammar rules for past tenses, with the exception that we typically don’t use present perfect simple to describe the weather.

Furthermore, there are also two different ways of describing weather in the future:

Grammar FormulationExamplesExplanation
It + will + weather verb + future timeIt will rain tomorrow. It will snow tomorrow.Future with weather verb
It + will + be + weather adjective + future timeIt will be rainy tomorrow. It will be snowy tomorrow.Future with weather adjective

Describing the exact temperature

There are also differences in how to describe the temperature in different countries due to the the use of the imperial and metric measurement systems.

The majority of countries in the world use the metric system. For example, in the UK they would say, 20 degrees is a normal room temperature. It is very cold out, minus 5 degrees.

In the US here would be the difference: 70 degrees is a normal room temperature. It is very cold out, negative 23 degrees. Note the word “negative” here for US English. If you visit America, make sure to use the imperial system, because otherwise they might have trouble understanding you.

There are further general differences between US and UK English, which you can learn with Lingoda Sprint.

I always thought that the question «How’s the weather» is correct one, but today I was taking a test and there w as such a question:

Choose the correct option: A, B, C or D:
A. What’s like the weather?
B. How’s the weather?
C. What’s the weather like?
D. How the weather is?

And the right answer was «What’s the weather like».

Will you please be so kind as to explain it to me?

It might be a long shot, but I’ll try to put forward my suggestion.
When asking about somebody’s appearance or character, you say What does (s)he look like? and What‘s (s)he like? respectively.
Similarly, What‘s the food like?, What‘s the hotel like?

How’s the weather? by itself is a bit strange; as people have said, it makes it seem as though the weather is a person. One might say it if one is bedbound and can’t look outside, but ‘what’s the weather like’ would be more usual.

How’s the weather with you? is less strange, when you are talking to someone on the telephone. Again ‘what’s the weather like with you’ might be more usual.

I have heard ‘what’s the weather doing? ‘.

I just had to google that one.
google.com:
«How’s the weather» got 302,000 hits.
«What’s the weather like got 237,000 hits.
I think both are fine.
google.co.uk restricted to UK only:
«How’s the weather» got 11,700 hits.
«What’s the weather like got 2,190 hits.
So it is not as if UK English differs from/to US English.

If Dimmas checks with his teacher in a polite and respectful manner, I would be interested in reading the explanation here.
