It’s been nearly three years since How I Met Your Mother ended. Okay, it might not have had the most awesome finale of all time, but we still miss the gang hanging out at McLaren’s bar and playing a game of Slapbet or two.
With a potential spinoff still in the works, and 20th Century Fox pondering a revival with the original cast, it got us thinking. what have the cast been up to since then? Here’s a ranking of how each of the main actors has fared:
6. Alyson Hannigan (Lily)
Alyson was already a huge star thanks to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the American Pie series by the time she signed up for HIMYM.
Since being part of the show, she has featured in a handful of movies including the fourth American Pie film, guested on The Simpsons and has hosted Penn and Teller: Fool Us.
She has been raising two daughters with husband Alexis Denisof (Wesley in Angel), after giving birth to Satyana in 2009 and Keeva in 2012.
5. Josh Radnor (Ted)
The show’s main star was a relative unknown when he landed the role in 2005. Since then, he has focused mainly on indie filmmaking, including his 2010 directorial debut Happythankyoumoreplease. He also directed and starred in the 2012 movie Liberal Arts, and will direct the upcoming sci-fi The Leaves.
He was one of the main cast members in the period medical drama Mercy Street on PBS before its cancellation this year. He will next star in the musical drama Rise on NBC. He has also started a career in music, teaming up with singer-songwriter Ben Lee.
4. Cristin Milioti (Tracy)
She may have only appeared properly in the final season, but she made quite the impression as the titular Mother. Before signing up, she had already made a name for herself on stage, including the Broadway version of folk musical Once.
The same year she joined HIMYM, she had a supporting role in The Wolf of Wall Street, and went on to have recurring roles in TV shows The Mindy Project and A to Z. She also had a leading role in the second season of Fargo.
3. Jason Segel (Marshall)
Jason was already a familiar face on TV thanks to Freaks and Geeks before HIMYM launched. The, during his time on the CBS sitcom, Jason managed to find the time to launch a pretty successful movie career.
However, he has remained relatively quiet since HIMYM ended, though he received plaudits for playing author David Foster Wallace in the 2015 film The End of the Tour.
2. Cobie Smulders (Robin)
HIMYM was one of Cobie’s first ever roles, and her career has gone from strength to strength since then.
In 2012, she landed the role of SHIELD agent Maria Hill in The Avengers, a part she has reprised for The Winter Soldier, Agents of SHIELD and Age of Ultron. She will also return for the upcoming Infinity War.
Cobie has also had roles in The Lego Movie, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, and the TV series Lemony Snicket and upcoming Netflix show Friends from College.
She married comedian Taran Killam in 2012, and they have two daughters together.
1. Neil Patrick Harris (Barney)
While Cobie may have landed the biggest Hollywood roles of the cast, we’d argue that HIMYM helped turn Neil into an even bigger household name, and he just pips her to the top of this list. For now, at least.
Neil totally reinvented himself on the show, having previously been best known as a child star in Doogie Howser. The year before HIMYM, he appeared as a zany version of himself in the first Harold & Kumar movie, and he returned for its two sequels.
He is also known for the lead role in Joss Whedon’s Dr Horrible, for parts in The Smurfs (and its sequel) and Gone Girl, and for playing Count Olaf in Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events on Netflix.
He won a Tony Award for Hedwig and the Angry Itch in 2014, and has hosted the event four times since 2009. He has also hosted the Emmys twice and the Oscars in 2015.
Neil was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2010. He married actor David Burtka in 2014, and they have two children together.

So my major problem with this season(and I’m not making a reference there) and the show as a whole now is that, even after 9 years of hearing «Aunt Robin» this and «Aunt Robin» that, implying for several years that she and Barney are going to get married, to have them separate, have some unknown woman become pregnant with Barney’s kid, have him settle down in the last episode while we have two minutes of «and now I’m gonna be happy with Robin» from Ted, it smacks of desperate writers wanting to force a Ted and Robin relationship.
That’s lazy and pathetic writing, they’d set up a relationship that didn’t work with them, made out that the real love story in the show was the Barney x Robin one, so either stick with that and end the show on a high that leaves things alone so you can’t return for some crappy continuation. Or don’t. Do this. Give the rabid fans who have been slobbering over a Ted x Robin thing since the first episode exactly what they want. A forced resolution. A crappy forced resolution. Yeah, it’s nice to see Ted finally get Robin. But we’d been given years worth of story that meant «no, they’re not together and they’re not going to be». Life’s like that, it’s not a romance book. It’s real and certain relationships just fall apart.
The majority of this last season has been good, we’ve resolved things that had been left hanging since the start of the show, but in these last episodes I’ve known that the end is just going to be awful. It’s ruined the show for me and I won’t be rewatching it like I do with other comedy shows that are icons. … Expand

How I Met Your Mother Original Cast Could Appear in HIMYF, Say Producers
Exclusive: the showrunners of How I Met Your Father tease that fan-favorite How I Met Your Mother characters could make appearances in the new show.
According to the producers of How I Met Your Father, original cast members from How I Met Your Mother could be making appearances at some point in the show. First airing in 2005, How I Met Your Mother, from creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, would go on to become a big hit for CBS over the following years, with the show’s ninth and final season coming to a close in 2014. How I Met Your Mother followed hopeless romantic Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) and his long-winded explanation to his kids about how he came to meet their mother.
It was announced in April of last year that a spin-off of sorts, How I Met Your Father, was in development at Hulu, following a new cast of characters and similar structure, with the lead character, Sophie (Hilary Duff) explaining to her kids how she met their father. In addition to Duff, the series stars Christopher Lowell, Francia Raisa, Tom Ainsley, Tien Tran, Suraj Sharma, Ashley Reyes, and Daniel Augustin. The first two episodes of How I Met Your Father premiered on Hulu on January 18th, earning generally negative reviews from critics but faring slightly better with audiences, with the series currently holding a critics’ score of 32% and an audience score of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In a Screen Rant exclusive interview with showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, they tease that original cast members from How I Met Your Mother could show up in the new series. While Aptaker and Berger don’t reveal any concrete information about which legacy characters will be showing up in How I Met Your Father, they do hint that it could be anyone from an obscure background character to fan-favorites like Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris). «Yeah, definitely. I mean, what I think is so cool about this show and the sequel nature of it is where the connection is that we’re living in the same version of New York, the same television universe of the original. So the possibilities are endless, whether it’s locations that our characters crossed through, whether it’s deep background random characters that only the most diehard fans would ever recognize or whether Neil Patrick Harris walks through the door of Sid’s bar one day, it’s all on tape.»
With the confirmation that How I Met Your Father takes place in the same universe as How I Met Your Mother, the possibilities, like Aptaker and Berger suggest, really are endless. How I Met Your Mother featured dozens of memorable supporting characters throughout its nine-season run, and it seems like they’re all fair game when it comes to guest appearances in the new show. With the possibility that Barney could show up, that also likely means that the other main characters, like Ted, Marshall (Jason Segel), Robin (Cobie Smulders), and Lily (Alyson Hannigan), could be making appearances too.
While the possibility of cameo appearances from fan-favorite characters is sure to please lovers of the original series, How I Met Your Father needs to stand on its own without coasting too much on what came before it. It’s still early in the series’ run, but the reviews thus far suggest the show still has a long way to go if it wants to reach the critically acclaimed heights of How I Met Your Mother. Ultimately, however, getting to see what beloved characters from the original series are up to is sure to enhance the viewing experience of any How I Met Your Mother fan that checks out the new series. New episodes of How I Met Your Father will release every Tuesday on Hulu.

10 Son and Daughter: David Henrie and Lyndsy Fonseca
David Henrie and Lyndsy Fonseca show up as Ted’s son and daughter throughout the entirety of the season. The two film their scenes way before the show’s finale, meaning they knew about the horrible plot twist for nine years. Somehow, they manage to move on from this, and the two actors have been busy since those early days of How I Met Your Mother.
David Henrie is best known for his Disney channel stint as Justin Russo in Wizards of Waverly Place. The filming between this show and HIMYM actually intersect; Henrie filmed the Disney channel crossovers shows and movies after his time on HIMYM and has made multiple appearances on other TV shows and movies like Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2.
Lyndsy Fonseca is best known for her role as the daughter, but she has continued acting since her 2005 role. She can be seen in her reoccurring roles on both RePlay and Agent Carter.
9 Victoria: Ashley Williams

8 Quinn: Becki Newton
Barney has a collection of women on his docket, but Quinn is a special occurrence. She’s the first person besides Robin that Barney loves enough to commit to, and she’s the first woman he proposes to. Unfortunately, the two don’t work out, but Quinn will always be remembered as one of Barney’s greatest conquests.
Becki Newton played Quinn in two seasons of HIMYM. Since then, she juggled a few spots on tv shows such as Weird Loners, American Dad!, and the Goodwin Games. Newton most recently appears in Tell Me A Story as Katrina Thorn and Divorce as Jackie.
7 Ranjit: Marshall Manesh
Ranjit is the affable cab driver who somehow puts up with all the gang’s strange adventures. In the beginning, he is simply a character put in place to get the main cast from Point A to Point B—literally. However, he becomes a common character in the show and acts as comic relief in many scenes.
Marshall Manesh actually did not get his start on How I Met Your Mother, as he has been acting since the late 1980s. Before this show, he made appearances on shows like Will and Grace and Scrubs. After HIMYM, he landed a gig on the show The Brink as Rafiq Massoud Sr. He also appears on Good Girls, Speechless, and Madam Secretary.
6 Lily: Alyson Hannigan
Alyson Hannigan is known for her part on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and HIMYM only added to her list of rememberable roles. Lily is the small yet fierce member of the game who is the apple of Marshall Erikson’s eye despite her shopping problem. Hannigan naturally did not have problems finding work after the show ended. She lends her voice to multiple characters on Robot Chicken over the course of a few years and appears as a mainstay on shows like Fancy Nancy and Pure. She even recently acts as Dr. Ann Possible in the Kim Possible TV movie.
5 Marshall: Jason Segel
Marshall Erikson is the quirky, intelligent lawyer who usually acts as the voice of reason. He is sentimental and emotional, which is seemingly very different from his two best friends.
Jason Segel plays the part of Marshall expertly, making it hard for anyone to dislike his character. Segel appears in many TV shows and movies, so his gig on HIMYM only marks one of his many leading roles. Since the show ended, he has been in the film, Come Sunday, and will be starring in the 2020 TV series Dispatches from Elsewhere.
4 Barney: Neil Patrick Harris
Much like his character, Neil Patrick Harris is a legend. In no way did his act as the playboy narcissist hinder his future acting gigs. Harris has been an established actor since his teenage days, and thankfully, his still continues to make appearances on our screens. Harris characters always tend to be loveable, despite their inner demons. He appears in movies like Gone Girl and TV shows like American Horror Story and A Series of Unfortunate Events since his days as the legend. Wait for it.
3 Robin: Cobie Smulders
Robin Scherbatsky’s character has always been a source of debate in the cast lineup of How I Met Your Mother. Despite this, Cobie Smulders has flourished as in actress and fans are excited to see more from her. Audiences most likely recognize her from her recurring role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where she plays Maria Hill. Smulders credits can also link to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., A Series of Unfortunate Events, Friends from College, and the newest installments of Arrested Development. She reprises her role as Maria Hill in Spider-Man: Far From Home next month.

And the man of the hour, Ted Mosby. Ted is surprisingly someone that audiences hate to love and love to hate. Although the entire show highlights his journey to find the love of his life, in hindsight, fans have found Ted’s morals to be somewhat questionable throughout the show. Still, Ted’s character is what makes How I Met Your Mother the show that it is. No man can play the part better than Josh Radnor. Radnor is best known for his role as Ted, but he has gone on to portray characters in Mercy Street, Rise, and is currently filming the show The Hunt.
