Mensa offers an authorized IQ test for persons above the age of 16.

Are you curious to know your own IQ? The test is available to everyone, so you may still take the test even if you do not have any ambitions to qualify for a Mensa membership. A test like this is likely to cost thousands of kroner if taken at a psychologist, while at Mensa it only costs 500 NOK.

If you score among those with the top 2% highest IQ in the population, you will also get an offer to join Mensa together with your test result.

You are welcome to try our online home test. It is similar to the controlled test described above, and may be used for practice purposes. The home test is not an authorized test, but it will provide a good indication of your IQ level.

Mensa also offers IQ testing of children above the age of 6. This test is performed in Levanger, Oslo or Trondheim, and costs 6500 NOK. Adolescents between the age of 14 and 18 may also be tested by a psychologist here, at regular hourly rate.

Test instructions

When you participate at an IQ test with Mensa, the test instructor will normally read out the test instructions in Norwegian only. We therefore provide these instructions translated into English below.

“Welcome to this IQ-test under the supervision of Mensa Norway.
We will now start by checking your photo ID. Then it is time to turn off sound and vibration on devices with such functions, this is to minimize the likelihood of disturbances.

If you are not feeling well, be it due to sleep deprivation, illness or something else that could affect performance negatively, then you are advised to postpone the test.

We distribute two versions of the test, A and B. You can attend testing up to three times, with a 6 month quarantine time between the attempts.

After this you cannot attend any more tests at Mensa, but we can consider membership on the basis of external tests documented and signed by a registered psychologist.

A test form should be found in front of you. Write your name on the test form. The result of the IQ-test will be sent to the address you provided when signing up for the test.

Wait quietly if you finish before the time is up.

The test consists of 45 tasks which you will have 20 minutes to finish. The difficulty level of the tasks are mixed. All of the tasks are equally valued regardless of the difficulty. Errors and unanswered tasks both scores zero points.

Drawing, writing, and making notes or marks on the test sheets and the test form is prohibited. Be sure not to write at all in the test booklet.

When answering a task, mark a ring around the alternative you think is right. If you change your mind, simply make a cross over the ring and make a new ring around the new answer.”

Test booklets are then distributed, and the test instructor will go through three example tasks, before announcing that you may start the test.

You will receive the test result within a few weeks after the test, and if you qualify for Mensa the envelope will also contain a membership offer.

How do I qualify for Mensa?

Membership of Mensa is open to persons who have attained a score within the upper two percent of the general population on an approved intelligence test that has been properly administered and supervised. There is no other qualification for initial membership eligibility.

Generally, there are two ways to prove that you qualify for Mensa: either take a test administered by Mensa, or submit a qualifying test score from another approved test. There are a large number of intelligence tests that are ‘approved’. More information on whether a test you have taken (or plan to take) is approved, as well as information on the procedure for taking the Mensa test, can be obtained from your nearest Mensa office.

Please be aware that online tests cannot be used for admission to Mensa. Also, many tests are not valid for people under the age of sixteen. If you have any other queries regarding eligibility or testing in general, please contact Mensa International for further information.

OK, so I need to get a score in the test which puts me in the top 2% of the population. But how can I find out my IQ score?

The term ‘IQ score’ is widely used but poorly defined. There are a large number of tests with different scales. A result on one test of 132 can be the same as a score of 148 on another test. Some intelligence tests don’t use IQ scores at all. This is why Mensa keeps it simple with a cutoff of 98%: candidates who have achieved a score at or above the 98th percentile on a standard test of intelligence will qualify for Mensa. Simple! But getting a straight answer to the question, ‘What’s my IQ?’, may not be so simple!

How do I get proof of my previous test score(s)?

You need to contact the testing service that administered the test for you, requesting that they send you a report showing your score. Include as much information as you can about yourself, and about when and where you were tested. If you can’t give an exact answer, an approximation is better than nothing. Many testing services charge a fee for sending reports; you should give the testing service a call to find out how much they charge before requesting the report.

If your school administered the IQ test you took, write to them and ask for a CERTIFIED copy of your score. It must include your name, date of birth, the name of the test, and a clearly defined number (i.e., IQ score, or national percentile score). Finally, the school seal must be stamped on the report. N.B.: Please note that Mensa does not accept achievement tests.

For psychologist/agency testing, you should make a request to have the report sent on a professional letterhead, and also ask for the psychologist’s or agency’s license or registration number to be included. Mensa only accepts tests given by people qualified to carry out testing privately. As well as your personal details, the name, date and full score of the test must be given, and the report must be signed. Any signature-guaranteed or notarized copy of any of the reports will be accepted. N.B.: Please note that non-verifiable copies may be rejected.

Case A: I’ve never been tested. Case B: I have, and I think I did well, but it was a long time ago. Case C: It’s too much hassle to get an official copy of my old test score.

If any of the above cases apply to you, it’s probably best if you ask Mensa to test you. It’s all very straightforward. You will be put in contact with the local testing coordinator who will tell you where and when you can take a test. Specific information is also available about testing costs for all the national groups.

I’m not sure I’m ready to take it yet. Are there any pre-tests available?

Yes, in some countries, a pre-test is available and you can take it in the privacy and comfort of your own home. To find out whether such a test is available in your country, please contact your nearest Mensa office.

When you’ve finished the pre-test, return it to the testing centre. When it has been marked, you’ll be notified of your result. If your score is high enough, you’ll be invited to take a qualifying supervised test. The pre-test is just for practice; you can’t use it to qualify for Mensa even if you score at or above the 98th percentile. Taking a pre-test is not required for admission; however, many people take it simply for the challenge.

What is an IQ Test?

IQ or Intelligence Quotient is an attempt to measure intelligence. This means many things to many people but generally the attribute of intelligence refers to quickness of mental comprehension (or mental agility).

Intelligence is often confused with knowledge, wisdom, memory, or other attributes and in general has a variety of meanings depending on the context in which it is used. The term IQ usually refers to the attempt to measure a person’s mental agility. There are many standard IQ tests in use around the world. On most intelligence tests, average IQ score is 100, but some tests give different numerical values to the level required for entry into Mensa, in the same way that the same temperature is expressed by different numerical values on the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales.

One way of comparing scores from different IQ tests is to convert them to a ranking, or percentile score, which tells you in which band you fit. A percentile score of 99% means that you are in the top 1%, a percentile score of 98% puts you in the top 2% and so on.

Mensa membership is offered to anyone who can demonstrate an IQ in the top two per cent from any recognised IQ test. The results will be verified through our prior evidence process.

British Mensa can offer supervised tests using two separate, industry-standard tests, the Cattell III B and the Cattell Culture Fair III A. A score which puts you in the top two per cent of the population on either of these papers would qualify you for membership of Mensa. An adult can only get a maximum IQ of 161 on the Cattell III B test and 183 on Culture Fair.

A top two per cent score on Cattell III B would be 148 or over, while for Culture Fair it is 132 or over.

Comparison of IQ Tests

As different IQ tests were developed, each was given its own scoring system. Therefore, an IQ of 150 is a meaningless claim unless you know the actual test which was used. In order to compare one IQ test against another, the scores are converted to ‘percentiles’, i.e. where a person’s score falls in comparison to the rest of the population by percentage. Mensa offers membership to anyone whose IQ score places them within the top two per cent of the population, no matter which approved test was used.

A top 2% mark in recognised IQ test qualifies you for entry to Mensa. IQ tests accepted by Mensa include the Cattell III B, Culture Fair, Ravens Advanced Matrices, Ravens Standard Matrices, Wechsler Scales and Stanford Binet (this list is not exhaustive).

Note: The absolute score on any given IQ test which equates to the 98th percentile varies, once test scores are constrained to a normal distribution a direct comparison between tests can be made. For prior evidence we look at tests individually and take the 98th percentile as set out in the technical manual for the particular version of a test taken.
