How To Become The Best Version Of Yourself

Do you want to know how you can become the best version of yourself? That’s a question I found myself asking at the start of the year. I had my goals written down and I had the woman in mind that I was trying to become. But the question was how?

It wasn’t an easy one to answer, and it didn’t take me two weeks to figure it out. To be honest, it is six months later and it’s still a work in progress. But these things don’t happen overnight so don’t expect them to. Becoming the best version of yourself takes time, and it takes dedication. There isn’t a day off and there’s no room for excuses.

I began to view myself as a work in progress, which meant every day I had to do something to push forward in order to be better. And of course, I’ve had a few stumbles along the way, but who hasn’t? This is my journey and how I began to change my life for the better, which in turn made me a better person. Take a look at these tips to start becoming the best version of yourself too…

1. Start With The Vision

What does the best version of yourself look like?

The one thing important to remember here is that this has to be your vision and not anybody else’s. It needs to come from you. It’s not about who your boss wants you to be, or what your mum thinks you should behave like. It’s your dream and it’s your life – so in order to feel like you are attaining a higher level of yourself then you need to first figure out your vision and then execute it.

2. You ALWAYS Need To Do More…

It’s as simple as that. You need to do more! What you’re doing now? It’s not enough. Think about it. Successful women did not acquire their positions or get to where they are by just taking each day as it comes. They always plan ahead, which means they’re always two steps ahead, rather than being five steps behind.

I understand that things get busy, but don’t let that be your excuse for not doing everything you want to do to be the best version of yourself. Because truthfully, I used to think this way. Until I realized that I was letting my life go by excuse after excuse.

If you want to be the best you can be in your career, then you need to put the work in behind the scenes. And unfortunately, it is a lot of work and it will take a lot of effort. But trust me when I tell you that it really pays off and that you’ll begin to love the woman you’re growing into.

3. Embrace The Unknown

You can’t expect to be the best version of yourself if you don’t take risks and just play it safe. Comfort zones are for the comfortable. They’re for the people who give into the fear. Don’t let yourself be one of those people. Honestly, I’m a person who has to constantly push past comfort zones, because I like to feel comfortable. It’s where I feel safe. But fear is something we constantly invent and something we can always overcome.

For example, I had a successful job where I was on good money and managing a team of 70. However, I wasn’t enthused about waking up every day. In fact, I hated it. It wasn’t my passion. And leaving this job and taking a risk was the best thing that ever happened to me. Since then, I’ve never let the fear of money and bills stress me out or hold me back.

And you shouldn’t either. Because you never know, getting fired may actually be the best thing that’s ever happened to you. And I’ve always believed that everything happens for a reason, all it means is that better things are around the corner for you. Remember, life is all about risks and changes. But know and trust that it will all be fine in the end. Has it ever not been?

The best version of yourself could be waiting for you. Stop making her wait.

4. Grow From Your Mistakes

If you don’t embrace failure or give up easily you will never be the best version of yourself. Life is tough and success isn’t easy, but that certainly does not mean you can’t smash it.Let me tell you that mistakes are human, they happen, but it’s how you react to those mistakes that really matter.

For example, I had to organize a big huge campaign shoot with models and we were shooting at 9 AM! I was also responsible for booking the camera and photographer for that morning. But I had forgotten to do it. Big oops!

It wasn’t until 9 AM when my boss asked me if the camera was on the way. That I realized, of course, it wasn’t. Right then, right there I could have given up. Rather than crying, or stressing out and letting it get to me I decided to bounce back and come up with a solution, which I did.

And that’s what you need to do. Find a solution, don’t give up. You’ve made the mistake, fix it, grow from it, and learn from it. Be the problem solver – you’ll be a much better person because of it.

5. Be The Sort Of Person You Would Admire

I want to be someone people look up to. And I’m guessing you’re the same too. The successful women I admire now are women I aim to be. And if you want to be the best version of yourself you can be then that means becoming this woman. Does this sound impossible to you?

Because I’m here to tell you that it’s not. You can be anything and everything you set your mind to, with the right amount of ambition, commitment, dedication and of course, hard work you’ll do it. What does this woman look like to you? Did she build a business from the ground up? Or is she an amazing advocate for female empowerment?

Figure out her traits and see how many of them you actually have yourself. Chances are, you have a lot more in common than you may have originally thought. The only differences are is this woman is recognized for her work and gets to do it on a larger scale. That’s how you need to figure out how you can take the next step.

It’s all about your mindsets and reprogramming your mind for success. The women, we admire and look up and aspire to all each have different mindsets – read the article here and check it out and see what mindset you want.

Ken Mazaika, CTO and co-founder of thefirehoseproject.org, answered the question, “What can I do to make sure I am becoming the best version of myself?” on Quora.

I identified 21 actions that could help you become the best version of yourself.

#19 is the most actionable of them all.

1. Just show up. Say you want to run a marathon, but have no prior experience. The first step is lacing up you shoes and hitting the pavement. Even if you only make it half a mile on your first training run, you’ll be about 2% closer to your ultimate goal than if you didn’t put in any work at all.

2. Start from the beginning. You don’t just happen to stumble upon the best version of yourself. You need to start from the beginning and take a high number of small steps in order to become what you envision.

3. Recognize that the best version of yourself should be your vision, not anybody else’s. Don’t waste energy trying to live up to what somebody else wants you to be.

4. Stop looking for a secret trick. There is no miraculous shortcut to the better version of yourself.

5. Use Twitter to network. It’s never been easier to get in touch with influential and powerful people. Earlier in my career, I reached out a high-level executive of a company I was interested in. He was hosting an AMA session on Twitter. I asked him for advice about how to get hired for his company, and not only did he reply with some helpful tips, he also connected me with specific people at the company about an open position.

6. Don’t sweat the details. Just make sure that you’re moving in the right general direction. You probably don’t have the knowledge you need today to know the shortest path to your happiness five years from today. But you probably have some idea about how to move in the right direction. Take those steps.

7. Recognize the opportunity at hand. The Internet has fundamentally changed everything. Previously, knowledge was locked away in the minds of industry experts and in the pages of books that you needed to buy or check out from a library. But now, it’s easier than ever to learn new skills. This is essential to becoming the best version of yourself.

8. Write on Medium. Translating your thoughts into written narratives pushes you to think about the ideas in your head at a much deeper level.

9. Don’t count the hours. They don’t matter. Think about the last time you ran on a treadmill. If you looked down at the timer every few seconds, you probably didn’t enjoy your run. In turn, this made it far more difficult to run far.

But what if you took the opposite approach? You plugged in your headphones, lost yourself in the music, and took it one stride at a time….while resisting any temptation to look at the timer at all. If you did this, you probably discovered that you enjoyed the run and made it pretty far. Counting hours just slows you down from reaching your goal.

10. Accept help from other people. Don’t let your pride get in the way. Most successful people needed help along the way, too.

11. Launch a personal website. Maintaining an online presence of yourself pushes you to become the best possible version of you.

12. Write answers on Quora. Quora is an amazing place to help and inspire people at scale.

13. Ignore the social media scoreboard. People depict an extremely exaggerated version of life on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and other social platforms. We only share the good things, not the bad. So when you compare yourself to what you see on social media, you’re just hurting yourself.

14. Celebrate the small wins. Appreciating what you’re doing in the present gives you the motivation to keep making strides towards your ultimate goal.

15. Stop pretending to know things you don’t know. You’ll never learn anything if you pretend to already know everything.

16. Embrace failure. You can’t become the best version of yourself by playing it safe. Heck, getting fired could even be the best thing that ever happened to you, just look at Noah Kagan (employee 30 at Facebook).

17. Call your family. This is just the decent thing to do. But you can also learn lessons from your family that aren’t available through any Google search and aren’t accessible to pretty much anyone else in the world.

18. Exercise in the morning. Once I started doing this in the morning, I became far more focused and relaxed throughout the day. Science backs that up, too.

19. Create a side project. Doing something productive outside of work that makes you happy helps you become a better version of yourself. So, whatever it is…an app, film, album, whatever….start doing it on your nights and weekends. And who knows? It might just turn into a full-time job that you love.

20. Help other people become the best version of themselves. Pay it forward. Doing so keep you motivated on your own path, and you’ll find that the lasting connections you build from helping others will greatly benefit you moving forward.

21. Launch your MVP early. If you’re not satisfied with the current version of yourself, then the quickest way to solve the problem is to begin working towards the better version today. There is no “right time” to get started.

It can be tempting to think about the best version of yourself as some intangible point in the future. You know, the one where you are:

You see your current self as the regular season, and you’re just waiting for the playoffs to start before giving it your all.

But if all you do is wait for the best version of yourself to happen, you’re forever going to be stuck with the current version.

So, how do you launch the best version of yourself? Start making progress today.

What Does “Be Your Best Self” Mean?

You’ve finally decided to work on your best self, but what does that term actually mean?

The definition of “best self” is subjective. Your version of your best self may not be the same as your family or close friends. Considering this, do not give in to the temptation of comparing yourself with others. Instead, remember your personal definition of your best self.

Additionally, your “best self” does not need to be the same thing forever. Over time, your definition of your best self will change in all areas of your life so do not be afraid to be flexible.

Generally, your best self means taking control of your life. When you call the shots, you become more empowered to make decisions towards your happiness.

More than that, remember that your best self does not always mean winning. All areas of your life can’t turn out the way you want to. That’s simply not how life works. Instead, it’s about acknowledging that being your best self means showing up to face each challenge.

Even if you ask your most successful close friends, they will tell you that unlocking your best self is not an overnight process. Sometimes, it can take a lifetime. Just brace yourself for the ride, and enjoy the journey.

Finding Motivation to Be Your Best Self

Your motivation involves the reasons you have for wanting to become your best self. If you start your journey towards self-improvement without clearly knowing your motivations, you may lose track of why you’re making an effort to become better in the first place.

There are two types of motivation namely, intrinsic and extrinsic.

Intrinsic Motivation

Intrinsic motivation is something that is driven by your beliefs and values. For example, you want to become your best self because you enjoy being challenged.

Extrinsic Motivation

On the other hand, extrinsic motivation is triggered by external factors such as avoidance of punishment, recognition, or reward. For instance, you want to become your best self so you can get a raise at work, or so you can impress your close friends.

Whatever your reasons are for wanting to become better, do not forget it. Use it as an anchor to stay on track of your goals.

The journey is long, the obstacles hard. The plan, though, is simple. Let’s go over the plan in a little more detail.

How to Become the Best Version of Yourself

1. Visualize Your Future Self

Think about your perfect self. What does s/he look like? How does s/he speak, think, eat, and interact with others? What is s/he capable of that you aren’t?

Define your perfect self in adjectives that are measurable and obtainable. For example, you can say, “He is kind and treats everyone with compassion,” or “She is strong and eats healthy food in order to improve her health.”

It’s best if you take the time to write these things down and keep them somewhere where you will be able to see them at least once a week. This will help remind you what you are working toward.

It is also important to prioritize these things in order to be your best self. You may have many things on your list, and that’s great! However, try to choose one at a time to consciously work on.

For example, you can start by trying to eat healthier by replacing junk food with fruit. Once that becomes a habit, you can work on speaking more clearly in meetings with your boss. Take it one step at a time and see how fast you grow as a person.

In order to help yourself visualize your future self, you can also write a letter from the perspective of yourself 10 or 20 years down the road. What do they want to tell you? How do they speak to you and feel about themselves and their life? Doing this will really help you get a feel for the personality you can develop with patience and practice.

2. Tackle Your Goals

It’s a good idea to start with the shortest timed goals. “I will floss every day” will only take about a week or two to perfect, whereas “I will run a marathon” will likely take at least several months.

Get started with the ones you know you can complete quickly in order to build confidence. With each habit you introduce into your newly constructed lifestyle, you will be one step closer to learning how to be your best self.

You will also gain momentum with each goal, which will motivate you towards the next goal. By the time you reach the goals that could take months or even years to implement, you’ll be so full of new skills and motivation that you’ll tackle them with no problem.

You can check out this video to learn how to set goals and grow as a person:

3. Ensure Your Goals Match Your Purpose

Remember that each of your goals should have purpose. You may find that a couple of months (or years) down the line, a certain goal of yours no longer suits your interests or priorities.

Maybe there is no good purpose for having 10% body fat, but instead you find it important to have functional strength and cardiovascular stamina. In this case, you would align your plan to fit your new goals. Instead of focusing on body fat percentage, you would plan workouts that focus on increasing strength and stamina.

Take some time at least once a month to ensure that your goals are still pointing you in the direction of your priorities and life purpose. If they’re not, take some time to alter your vision and your plan.

4. Offer Yourself Unconditional Love

By working from where you are today, you’ll be able to step out of your comfort zone without fear of failure or rejection because you know that your self-love will not waver. If you fall back a step or two, catch yourself, recognize where you went wrong, offer yourself positive, supportive thoughts, and push yourself forward once again.

As you learn how to be your best self, you will also need to be your own best friend in order to feel good and live your life on your terms.

5. Stop the Fear of Failure

Does failing make you worry about what your close friends think about you? Does failing worry you that people will think you’re stupid and not a competent person? Does failing make you worry about the future and the desired lifestyle you seek? Do you tell people beforehand that you don’t expect to succeed or thrive in order to lower expectations?

Highly successful people, such as Michael Jordan, Richard Branson, and Bill Gates have all failed at some point in their life. Even your close friends have failed. Failure is needed because that’s when valuable insights are learned that can drive you to become highly successful in life.

Overcome your fears by analyzing all potential outcomes, practice positive thinking, have a worst-case scenario to ease your worries, and practice setting goals. Remember:

“Fear will do one thing and one thing only: hold you back.”

6. Stop Procrastinating

Perfectionism is the mother of procrastination. Procrastination is another form of laziness. Procrastinators sabotage themselves from becoming the best versions of themselves. Procrastinators are sidetracked by insignificant factors that ultimately derail their goals.

To stop procrastinating, make you actions precise and calculated, have some form of accountability established, and set your goals up in a way in which they are small, manageable, and easily achievable.

7. Stop People Pleasing

Do any of these descriptions sound like you?

If any of these describe you, I want you to tell yourself, “No more!

It’s time for you to stop playing the role of the ‘doormat’ and start becoming selfish and putting yourself first. For each second you remain in this people-pleaser role, a piece of you dies.

8. Stop Criticizing and Judging Others

Do you notice how some people have a short fuse for those who have ideas that are different from theirs?

Do you realize how quick people are to judge and label other people without knowing them and to not think twice about it?

To become the best version of yourself, you need to eliminate all negative energy. When you throw negative energy at people, you’re potentially damaging a person’s self-worth and self-esteem. You’re also throwing buckets of negative energy out into the universe yourself.

Nice people finish first in life and achieve more than those who are selfish and bitter with the world.

Avoid criticizing and judging others by not assuming anything; know it’s not about you, and pretend to walk in their shoes to see the situation from their perspective.

9. Stop the Negative Self-Talk

“I could never lose 20 pounds.”

“I’m so stupid, I could never do that job.”

“I’ll look stupid and weird if I try to wear some of those clothes.”

When you receive a compliment about your work, you say, “Oh, that’s nothing.”

These are the types of things most people say when suffering from negative self-talk. Self-talk is a normal process we all experience, but once it becomes filled with irrational ideas that are negative, then there’s a problem.

The story that goes on in your head is a hundred times worse than the actual story going on in your day-to-day life.

Silencing the inner critic and putting a positive spin on things are two of the best ways to eliminate negative self-talk. Start by eliminating negative vocabulary, such as always, can’t, never (and ever), won’t, but, should, and try. As Yoda would say,

Final Thoughts

With the victory of each goal implemented into different areas of your life, you’ll be one step closer to learning how to be your best self. Each victory will mark a decision you made and a plan that you carried out, work that you did to make yourself better. You’ll feel better about yourself with each victory, and with the learning of each new skill or the discipline of each focus, you’ll find it much easier to move to the next goal.

It’s a long journey to the top of the mountain, but it’s completely obtainable and totally worth the effort. Start climbing today, and you’ll be well on your way before you even start feeling the pain.

25 Ways to Become the Best Version of Yourself

Is it possible to be happy with yourself right now and still want to change your life?

Can you be content and evolving at the same time?

I believe you can.

In fact, I think this is a powerful balance we should strive for every day — the balance between happiness in the moment and action toward the best version of ourselves.

Leo Babauta of Zen Habits recently wrote a beautiful post on contentedness.

He suggests that you don’t need to wait for change, for something better, for the future, before you are content. You can be content right now if you choose to see all of the good and beauty around you.

I know this is true. I know we experience life right now, in this moment. This moment is our only reality. If right now is spent longing for some vision of the future, we haven’t truly lived and enjoyed the blessings of right now.

Longing and struggling against “what is” causes suffering. Wishing for more, for something different, for something better at the expense of contentment in the moment robs us of life.

However, as someone who is a seeker and has spent most of my life intrigued by personal development, I have a vision of the best version of myself. I know that inner and outer change, evolution, and transformation will happen to me whether or not I define how that will happen.

But I know that I can define how that will happen. I have that personal power, and I’d much rather be the creator of my life rather than a reactor to it.

So how does one be a creator and be content at the same time? How do you become the best version of yourself while loving yourself just as you are?

How to Be the Best Version of Yourself

1. Awareness

With the awareness that both are possible, you reduce the tension between knowing that you should be content right now and the inner urging for something more. There is a way to find a balance for your on-going contentment and happiness.

2. Process

Begin to view the process of personal evolution as place for happiness and contentment. Rather than holding back happiness while you await an outcome, enjoy the process. Every step along the path, every stage of life, every small action should be savored and celebrated. Life is process. Reaching outcomes is a fleeting moment.

3. Shift

During the process, you will experience tedious, boring, or even painful moments. Rather than resisting or struggling against these times, breathe into them. Shift your thinking so that you become aware of even the smallest value these moments add to your experience of life.

4. Failure

Failure is part of process. And even though failure stings, the venom it injects actually serves our growth. Failure means you are engaged in life because you’ve taken a risk toward your vision.

5. Values

If you haven’t defined the best version of yourself, begin with values. What are the most important values in your life and work? What values will define the person you are now and want to be in the future. Get very clear on those.

6. Vision

Give yourself the gift of time and emotional space to create a vision for your life for the next few years. Use your most important values as a framework for this vision. Look at every aspect of your life and define how you want it to look. Write it down. And remember to enjoy the process of creating a vision. It is creative, life-affirming work.

7. Plan

When you have a vision for yourself, you need a plan for materializing this vision. You need action steps. Prioritize your vision and create a strategy for action. Break it down into small steps that are manageable.

8. Ritual

A ritual is an action imbued with purpose and meaning. Each action step along the way to your vision is a microcosm of the outcome. Rather than viewing each step as a boring task, turn it into a ritual — something beautiful that is a crystalline drop of your beautiful vision.

9. Relationships

Relationships are the most important part of our lives. Nothing matters more. Define the best version of yourself in your relationships. Who do you know yourself to be inside? How does this person want to interact with loved ones and others in your life? Find the beauty in letting this person emerge as you release anger, jealousies, frustrations, blame, and hurt. Enjoy the process of releasing the old you to welcome the real you.

10. Priorities

Our time is limited. We can’t have everything, be everything, do everything. If we stuff our lives with too much, we are scattered and unfocused. Life is abundant, and it tempts us with so many options. Choose what is most important right now and gently release all else for another time or for good.

11. Focus

Whatever you are doing, focus on it. Savor it. Roll around in it. Love it. Even if it’s pain. There is beauty even in pain. Don’t struggle against or wish for something more. If you are doing it now, it is the most important thing in the world.

12. Simplicity

When you are focused, many other things in your life fall away naturally. Things you don’t really need. Begin to sweep some of these things out the door. Simplify your life, your thoughts, your relationships. Give yourself the space and energy to focus and love the moment.

13. Experiences

Experiences almost always trump money and possessions in long-term life satisfaction. Experiences stay in your memory and create residual happy feelings. Put your efforts and income more on experiences than on things.

14. Recess

Give yourself a mental and physical recess, a time for play and creative introspection. Remove yourself from stresses and demands to clear your mind for new ideas, inspiration, and recharging. Being in nature supports this process.

15. Intuition

Regardless of how analytical or brainy you may be, pay attention to intuition. Intuition arises from an accumulation of all of our memories and experiences. It has something important to say to us, so listen up.

16. Stretch

Stretch yourself. Go a step or two farther than you think you can. Push yourself a bit into the discomfort zone. Do this regularly, and you’ll be amazed at your capacity for greatness. Breath into the stretch and enjoy it.

17. Forgive

Forgive yourself. Forgive others. Whatever it is, put it in a red balloon and release it. Ah, freedom.

18. Heal

Where you are wounded, where you are hurt, where you are frightened — seek healing. Restore yourself. Get well again. Do what must be done to heal. You can’t be the best version of yourself when you are emotionally, mentally, or physically unwell.

19. Move

Your body houses the best version of yourself. Your body is beautiful and miraculous. Support your body as it serves you by staying fit and healthy.

20. Nourish

Give your body the proper fuel to feel your best so you can enjoy every moment to the fullest.

21. Gratitude

Spend a few minutes in gratitude every day. Remind yourself of even the smallest blessings in your life. Allow the emotions that accompany everything you are grateful for to rise to the surface. This will heighten your sense of gratitude and happiness.

22. Serve

Happiness is associated with service. Whether you are simply listening to a friend, giving a hand to a neighbor, or volunteering, serving others provides fulfillment that no other activity can afford. It doesn’t matter how you do it, just find a way to do it.

23. Learn

Have a beginner’s mindset in all things. Accept that even if you are an expert, there is always more to learn. You can learn from the humblest among us. You can learn new ways of thinking. You can learn to appreciate many points of view. Stay open to all possibilities with eager expectation.

24. Seek

Once you know the best version of yourself, seek new paths for evolving into that person. Open your mind and heart to wise people and mentors. Face the truth about yourself or others. Be relentless in your personal evolution, but relish and celebrate each new level of growth.

25. Refine

Regularly hit the refresh button on your definition of your best self. As we evolve, change, and grow as individuals, even our vision of our best self shifts and evolves along with us. Be content with being the best self you can be in each moment — because you will always be in the process of becoming. Make each moment your destination.

What is your best version of yourself, and how are you working to become that person? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
