In 1989, Joseph Joestar arrives in Japan to meet his troubled grandson Jotaro Kujo at the request of his daughter Holly. Jotaro has locked himself in a jail cell out of fear that an evil spirit is possessing him and that he may cause harm to others. However, Joseph reveals the truth to Jotaro: this “spirit” is really a “Stand,” a physical manifestation of one’s fighting spirit. What’s more, Joseph and his companion Mohammed Avdol possess Stands of their own and have learned to control them with ease.

Joseph’s arrival comes with another piece of news: an old family enemy has returned from the grave, causing the Stands of the Joestar family to awaken. However, when a Stand manifests within Holly, her inability to cope with it leaves her gravely ill, stirring the men into action.

Armed with the power of Stands, a globe-trotting adventure from Japan to Egypt—where their adversary resides—begins. Meeting an array of nefarious Stand users along the way, as well as new allies, the team leads a crusade to save Holly and put an end to their enemy for good.

Stardust Crusaders (スターダストクルセイダース) is Part 3 of the long-running manga series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. It is preceded by Battle Tendency and followed by Diamond is Unbreakable.

In 1983, three fishermen pull a large chest out from the middle of the ocean believing they have struck the jackpot. Strangely, the chest is locked from the inside, but they manage to get it open. Sometime later, their boat is discovered, drifting with no one on board and no signs of struggle, with all that remains being the opened chest marked with the name «DIO».

Set in 1988-89 (1989 was the same year this part began publishing, running until 1992), Stardust Crusaders stars Jotaro Kujo, a self-proclaimed delinquent who thinks he is possessed by an evil spirit. In fear of accidentally hurting others more than he needs to, he turns himself in to the police. When Jotaro’s mother, Holly, realizes that she can see this «spirit», too, she calls in her father, Joseph Joestar, to resolve the situation. With the help of Egyptian fortune teller Muhammad Avdol, the Older and Wiser Joseph manages to prove to Jotaro that what he has is a mysterious power known as a Stand, which has been awoken in the Joestar family as a result of the resurrection of Dio Brando, now known only as «DIO» (written in Latin letters for good measure), who is sending his Stand-using assassins after Jotaro and Joseph to prevent them from stopping his rise to power.

After fighting classmate Noriaki Kakyoin, who was put under DIO’s thrall, the group discovers that Holly has formed her own Stand and it is slowly killing her due to her kind nature. Jotaro, Joseph, Avdol, Kakyoin, and later Frenchman Jean-Pierre Polnareff and the Stand-using dog Iggy, must head to Egypt to kill DIO once and for all to save Holly’s life along with those of all the Joestar descendants who are similarly being overwhelmed by their Stands all over the world, while battling DIO’s many Stand-using minions along the way.

This arc has been adapted to a three-part CD drama, a Super Famicom RPG, two OVAs published from 1993-1994 and 2000-2002 (all titled JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), an arcade Fighting Game by Capcom titled JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future, and an action-adventure game titled JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven. In 2014, it received a 48-episode anime adaptation like Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency. The English dub of the anime premiered in 2017 on Toonami. A semi-canon successor manga, Crazy Diamond’s Demonic Heartbreak, had its first part released in 2021, focusing on the lives of those affected by DIO as Hol Horse heads to Morioh and meets Josuke Higashikata.

Humans Really Are Made of Stardust, and a New Study Proves It

For decades, science popularizers have said humans are made of stardust, and now, a new survey of 150,000 stars shows just how true the old cliché is: Humans and their galaxy have about 97 percent of the same kind of atoms, and the elements of life appear to be more prevalent toward the galaxy’s center, the research found.

The crucial elements for life on Earth, often called the building blocks of life, can be abbreviated as CHNOPS: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur. For the first time, astronomers have cataloged the abundance of these elements in a huge sample of stars.

The astronomers evaluated each element’s abundance through a method called spectroscopy; each element emits distinct wavelengths of light from within a star, and they measured the depth of the dark and bright patches in each star’s light spectrum to determine what it was made of. The researchers used stellar measurements from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey’s (SDSS) Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) spectrograph in New Mexico. APOGEE can peer through the dust in the Milky Way because it uses infrared wavelengths, which pass through dust.

«This instrument collects light in the near-infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum and disperses it, like a prism, to reveal signatures of different elements in the atmospheres of stars,» Sloan representatives said in a statement.

«A fraction of the almost 200,000 stars surveyed by APOGEE overlap with the sample of stars targeted by the NASA Kepler mission, which was designed to find potentially Earth-like planets,» the statement added. «The work presented today focuses on ninety Kepler stars that show evidence of hosting rocky planets, and which have also been surveyed by APOGEE.»

Although humans share most elements with the stars, the proportions of those elements differ between humans and stars. For example, humans are about 65 percent oxygen by mass, whereas oxygen makes up less than 1 percent of all elements measured in space (such as in the spectra of stars).

The proportion of each element of life differed depending on the region of the galaxy in which it was found. For example, the sun resides on the outskirts of one of the Milky Way’s spiral arms. Stars on the outskirts of the galaxy have fewer heavy elements required for life’s building blocks, such as oxygen, than those in more central regions of the galaxy.

«It’s a great human-interest story that we are now able to map the abundance of all of the major elements found in the human body across hundreds of thousands of stars in our Milky Way,» Jennifer Johnson, the science team chair of the SDSS-III APOGEE survey and a professor at The Ohio State University, said in the statement. «This allows us to place constraints on when and where in our galaxy life had the required elements to evolve, a sort of ‘temporal galactic habitable zone.'»
